Crazy .AVI to Windows psychedelic phenomena

Ok, I think I have encountered the oddest issue!! It is not directly related to FCP, but is a video issue, so thought I would post here.
I am using MPEG streamclip to convert a Quicktime file to a .AVI file so that it can be played on a Windows PC system and used in a PC version of PowerPoint.
Once the file is convereted, it looks absolutely fine on my mac, but when I pay it on a PC, or even through Fusion running MS Windows the video is replaced by what seems a music visualizer, it displays psychedelic images, instead of the original video and I can still hear the original audio!!!
And I swear I haven't been smoking anything...yet.
Does anyone know why this is happening?!
I don't have a PC version of PowerPoint, but when my client plays it in their PC through PowerPoint the same thing is happening.
It seems that the Windows is interpeting the .AVI as a music file, and brings up its music visualizer, replacing the video that is in the file. When I select prooperties in windows, though, it says it is a video file. What is happening, and how can I be able to convert this quicktime to an .AVI without this happening? Help!??!!!

What settings would you use in Compressor? I was getting much better results thru MPEG streamclip.
I researched some more through windows Media Player FAQs,and it says that it plays a visualizer if the video codec is not installed in Windows Media Player. It says to download various plug-ins from http://www.wmplugins.com/
If this is something that has to played on many different PCs, and will be passed along, how do I convert it to a .avi to make sure that it plays across many different PCs?
Will converting it through compressor be any different?
Basically, I just need to convert a Quicktime file so that it works in a PC version of PowerPoint. I was told that PowerPoint for the PC only accepts .avi, and possibly mpeg formats. I don't have a PC version of PowerPoint to test.
What is the best way to make a Quicktime file work in PowerPoint for the PC?
I have final cut studio, but would like to know the best settings to convert.

  • FCP 5 export to .AVI for Windows client? Advice needed!

I have a Windows platform client that wants my Exported FCP 5 Sequence in .AVI format.
Obviously, I normally always use Export to Quicktime Movie in FCP, and I do know that their is not a direct choice in FCP to export/convert as an .AVI file. (I usually hand off the FCP file to another facility that does DVD Studio Pro authoring work, and haven't had a need to make different file formats).
This has made me to ponder of few bits of info, that I'm sure I could get great ansers to, here.
My normal "workaround" for making an .AVI for a Windows user is to Export as Quicktime Movie in FCP, like normal, and then open that exported file in Quicktime Pro, and use Export Movie to AVI in Quicktime Pro. Is this the best method? Secondly, I am a little unsure as to the best settings I should use in QT Pro to achieve this. For example:
I just did a routine NTSC 48k,16 bit stereo, 30 second ad in FCP, and my normal, Export to Quicktime Movie was about 260 meg in size for the finished, self-contained movie file.
I opened this in QT-Pro and ran Export to AVI. In the settings dialog, I chose "uncompressed" for video and 48k-16 bit stereo for audio. The resulting export was about 680 meg in size! Because of file size restrictions for the clients product, what settings change or choice should I be making in QT-Pro to get an "equivalent" of the 260 meg file the FCP is exporting? Should I not get an equal file size of the QT-Pro AVI versus the FCP export (both 260 meg?).
If the answer is compression, what is the best settings in QT-Pro? Cinepak? Intel Indeo?
Perhaps, I have always misunderstood what FCP Export to Movie is giving me, but I thought that was uncompressed video? If so, why do I get the 260 meg out of FCP, and then 680 meg from QT-Pro Export to AVI (uncompressed) for the same 30 second clip? Is it simply a data rate difference?
Lastly, I have actually had a Windows user take a FCP Export to Movie file, straight from me, and they say it opened fine in Windows Media Player as is for viewing. However, there is no (dot) file extension name on the end of the filename. They can simply click File/Open in Windows Media Player and choose the "unrecognized" file because of no extension, and play it just fine to at least view the clip.
So what exactly is the file type that FCP is creating? It's not a .MOV and not an AVI file. What would be the equivalent file type association (just for my curiosity).
Thanks for any help to the above as I value the more-experienced users here.
    Wade

    Hi Wade,
Sorry for letting your post unanswered for two days, we were all busy (I know, it is not an excuse).
Seriously, I think the reason you are not getting answers is you have asked too many questions in one post. Don't know about others, but I get slightly confused.
Let me tell you what I do with FCP material when I send it to our sound department where they work with Nuendo on PCs. I export sequence using QT Conversion. My settings are: Format - AVI, Compression type - DV-PAL, Compressor quality - Best. I do not bother much about the sound. I sent the resulting file over network to a Maxtor FireWire external drive connected to a colleague's PC and then take the drive down to the sound guys. If the AVI file is smaller than 2 GB I can burn it to a DVD and a PC can open it, if it is larger, PCs cannot open. Also, the sound guys ask me not to use Cinepac, they do not like it. Therefore, I use DV-PAL; I guess you may safely use DV-NTSC but it depends on who will open the AVI file. Ask your client what it wants.
I think my routine is a bit more streamlined than yours - I export straight from FCP and do not bother with QT. You are wrong in saying that there is no direct way in FCP to export AVI.
Hope this is a starter for more answers. Also, have you tried searching the forum? I am sure all the answers are already there.

  • Scroll bar goes crazy and active window jumps around in size - Help

I've got iTunes 7.0.5 installed. If I use iTunes for any length of time, my system goes crazy. The scroll bar on whatever program I make active goes up and down like mad, while the content of the active window shrinks and magnifies in size multiple times a second. It's very bizarre and consistently happens only when I run iTunes for some length of time. I have no problem if I choose Windows Media Player. It's very disturbing, as I can no longer use iTunes. Any help in knowing how to fix the problem, or even to trouble shoot it further, would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of thoughts on the Timeline scrolling and other possible display issues:
1.) make sure that you have the very latest video driver - the very latest
2,) if you have Vista, turn Aero and Sidebar off
3.) if you have Window Blinds, get the very latest version
4.) if you have an InteliPoint mouse driver, try removing it, and using the standard Windows mouse driver instead*
5.) if you have a laptop and both the touch-pad and a mouse are installed and ON, turn the touch-pad OFF
These are some suggestions that might affect your display issues.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * The MS InteliPoint has caused many display issues with Adobe products. Most often, these have manifested themselves in flashing GUI's and similar, but other odd behaviors have been experienced. If the removal of InteliPoint does help, try the very latest version, but be ready to revert to the standard Windows mouse driver.

  • Export to .avi causes windows to dump QT pro

qt pro 7.1.3 XP sp 2:
ALWAYS dies if I try to export to .avi
    Any ideas?

What compression are you attempting to use? Avi is a container so it can use any of numerous codecs to compress the content and the one you are using could be the problem. If you are not sure what codec is used then click on Options in the Export window and the Settings window should tell what compressor is in use.

  • Premiere Pro 2.0 crazy behavior in Windows 7

I have Premiere Pro 2.0 on a purchased disc.  Yes, it's old, but perfectly good for my purposes.  I was able to upload it into windows 7.  The program opens fine.  I can import projects made on my previous XP system.  So far, so good.  The problem occurs when I try to do anything with the video.
If I click on the timeline, the timeline turns white.  If I click on an effect, the effects window turns white.  If I click on the monitor, it turns white.  Waiting for things to return doesn't help.
I suppose that the answer is that Windows 7 is not Windows XP, but this is the first time I have ever seen a new system that wasn't back-compatible with previous versions. It's only 5 years, not Windows 98!!
If anyone has a solution to this, or even an explanation, I would appreciate hearing it.

What video card do you have? What is the video card driver?
That would be my first place to look.
    Good luck,

  • Crazy problems installing windows XP...

I've had Windows 2000 on my computer up until today when I bought Windows XP Pro.
I am still able to install windows 2000 without any problems. The trouble is if I try either upgrading my installation of 2000, or I try to reformat my hard disk and install XP onto the blank drive, I get some kind of error. The first part of the setup goes fine, but when the computer reboots it begins to install and i get this message (C is my HD, D is my CD):
    System setup log - (C:\WINNT\setuperr.log)
    Error:
Installation failed: D:\I386\asms. Error Message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
    Fatal Error:
One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
    Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
If you are installing from a CD, there might be a problem with the disc; try cleaning the disc or using another disc.
If you are installing from a network,... blah blah blah...
(it then repeats this message about 4 more times in the log)
I spent about an hour with microsoft tech support, and basically in the end, the guy just said try upgrading 2000 instead of installing on a blank hard drive. I tried this and the same error occurred. I've read a few posts about people having issues with the 74Gb raptor HD's. Could this be part of my problem? The CD itself looks spotless. I even washed and cleaned it. I've never had a problem with my CD drive either. Windows 2000 installs no problem.. If anyone knows anything that this could be or how to fix it, it would really help me out. I have no idea what else to try.

Well I fixed the problem finally! I had flashed my bios while I was still running windows 2000, but I didnt realize it reset all my settings to default. There were a few settings for SATA DMA that were disabled. I just set those to enabled and windows XP seemed happy to install itself.

  • Im trying to export a video to AVI but cannot see the option, Im on a mac. Is this option a windows only option?

The company I work for use AVI videos for Nuendo and I have recently installed my Adobe CC to test efficiency in creating video files for our clients. making QT is a piece of cake but cannot seem to find an option to create AVI anywhere. Would this option be available if I were to install Adobe CC on a Windows machine or is there no longer any support for AVI?

    AVI is windows only.

  • How can i export a 24bit avi file from photoshop for mac?

how can i export a 24bit avi file from photoshop for mac? i have a client that specificly needs the files to be avi and in 24bit what are the settings that i need to use to export the video using photoshop on a mac?

    Hello,
To make a 24-bit AVI file in Photoshop, go to File>Export>Render Video. Then, under File Options, choose AVI from the Quicktime Export drop-down menu. Click the Settings button. Click the Settings button in the AVI Settings window. Change Compression to None, and then choose "Millions of Colors" from the Depth drop-down under Compression.
The Millions of Colors option is for 24-bit video (8-bit R+G+B channels, 8x3=24). Millions of Colors+ is for 32-bit video (24-bit video plus an 8-bit alpha channel).

  • How can I convert the projects files (*.prel) to a AVI or WMV format? Is that possible?

I'm actually using Adobe Premiere Elements 10.

    rayssasouza
There is no "Publish+Share" in Premiere Elements 10. Publish+Share/ is the Premiere Elements 11 and 12 counterpart of Premiere Elements 10's Share/.
If you have established your Premiere Elements 10 (assumed Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit) Timeline, you can export that to an .avi file and .wmv file and many other formats from the Share area. Remember, .avi and .wmv are just file extensions that wrap the video and audio compression, so, when deciding on export choices, good to keep in mind all the properties that you seek for your export. All that being said...
    General idea....
    For avi file...
    Share
    Computer
    AVI
and then you set for the appropriate Presets.=
    For .wmv file
    Share
    Computer
    Windows Media
and then you set for the appropriate Presets =
I suspect what generated your question was that you are not seeing the AVI and Windows Media choices under Share/Computer/.
If that is so, you need to use the thin scroll bar to the right of the choices and scroll down to AVI and Windows Media to see them
and others toward the bottom of the list there.
Please review and consider. Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Old DV .avi projects exported from Premiere 6.5, hang in CS4.

    Hi
Im new to CS3. I finished some Mini-DV PAL 4:3 projects ages ago using Premiere 6.5, exporting the finished timeline directly from 6.5 as .avi files. I would have used whatever the default export CODEC in 6.5 was.
My Premiere 6.5, the machine used, and the project files have long gone.
When I play these .avis in Window media player, Nero, Media centre, etc they are fine.
But when imported into a CS4 project they behave strangely. The timeline progresses normally, the timecod advances, the audio plays, but the video hangs and stutters, sometimes as a frame hold, sometimes skipping, sometimes producing green video noise. This appears to occur mainly where there are titles and opacity changes.
All I want to do is add a few beginning and end transitions and some chapter points, send to Encore, then burn to DVD.
Im sure I have set the correct project parameters: DV PAL, SD, 720x576i.
Raw capture files of the same vintage play fine.
My machine is fast enough: 2.4GHz Quad core, Win XP SP3, 3.25GB RAM (out of 4GB). It runs AVCHD from my current camera faultlessly.
If anyone knows what is going on here it would be greatly appreciated!!
Below are the properties of one of the files, directly from CS4:
    File Path: G:\Video\Sweden.avi
    Type: AVI Movie
    File Size: 3.7 GB
    Image Size: 720 x 576
    Pixel Depth: 32
    Frame Rate: 25.00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 16 bit - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00:17:37:08
Average Data Rate: 3.6 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.094
    AVI File details:
    Contains 1 video track(s) and 1 audio track(s).
    Interleave: 1 : 12.00
    Video track 1:
Size is 3.54G bytes (average frame = 148.12K bytes)
    There are 26433 keyframes.
    Frame rate is 25.00 fps
    Frame size is 720 x 576
    Depth is 24 bits.
    Audio track 1:
    Size is 193.60M bytes
    Rate is 48000 samples/sec
    Sample size is 16 bits

It is quite common to find that Windows CODECs used by the clip window will play OK, but then the same clip will not play off the timeline. This is because on the timeline the output goes through Premiere's rendering engine rather than Windows and this is less forgiving due to editing requirements.
I am able to import old DV500 output files into PPro CS4 without any problems.
I would still suspect something to do with installed CODECs versus your 32-bit DV file. DV is normally 24-bit and doesn't include an alpha channel (the final 8 bits of 32).
You might be able to eliminate the extra 8 bits using AVIsynth (free download) if you can't fix it another way.

  • Encore not playing AVI clip the way it was made...

...I have a video with titles that are supposed to move closer to the viewer as they pop on screen. Now when I view it on my PPro 1.5 timeline it works great. When I view the avi on windows movie player, it plays great. When I put it into Encore the titles now hold still for a second or two and THEN move forward and fade out. Anyone else have a similar experience? How do we correct this? Any help is greatly apprecited.

Disable the "Optimize Stills" setting in PPro's project
and export settings and export the AVI file again. That will probably cure the problem.

  • P.Pro 1.5 - Losing quality in AVI/MPEG to DVD conversion

    Hi, everyone.
Is my first time in Adobe forums and my english isn't certainly the best, so excuse me for something I'll possibly make wrong :-)
    This is my problem:
I edit a lot of videos (holidays, weddings, karting, ...) from Mini-DV tapes. No problem on edit work, neither on export to AVI or MPEG. And at this point (after export) I don't think I had lost some video quality or if had that would be slight. But when I finished the next step (convert the resulting file to DVD format) I realize that video suffers from a substantial quality lost, mainly a distortion on whites (they get much brighter and, of course, lose some of its texture). Also, not always, is noticeable a kind of yellow and red thin lines along the "objects" shape (mainly on human faces).
At first I thought that was noting about Premiere and all about the conversion from AVI/MPEG to DVD because it's when the problem occurs, but after I had experimented all kind of converting software and the problem happens all times (sometimes more, sometimes less), I become to think the problem may be in Premiere exporting settings.
So, these are my Premiere exporting settings:
Export to AVI: File -> Export -> Movie
    Some important settings:
General: File Type: MS DV AVI
Video:  Compressor: DV (PAL) - I'm in Portugal (Europe)
                                      Frame rate: 25 fps
Pixel aspect ratio: D1/DV PAL (1.067)
                                       Recompress: Maintain data rate
Keyframe and Rendering: Lower field first
                                                                 Optimize stills
(don't have Deinterlace Video Footage marked)
Audio: Uncompressed, 48.000 Hz, 16-bit, stereo, 1 frame
Export to MPEG: File -> Export -> Adobe Media Encoder
    Some important settings:
                          Format: MPEG2-DVD
Preset: Custom (PAL DV 4x3 High Quality 4Mb VBR 2 Pass)
                           Video Summary:

                          Multiplexer Summary:
                                                    Multiplexing: DVD
I also thought the problem could be on the hardware but a few months ago I made an upgrade on my computer and changed CPU, Motherboard, RAM and Graphics card (had an AMD Sempron 2800+, 2 GB DDR and an ATI 9600 Pro 128MB) and the problem still remains...
Actually I think it match all the needs:
CPU: DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Motherboard: ASRock 4CoreDual-Sata2 (chipset: VIA Apollo PT880 Pro)
    RAM: 2x 1GB DDR2
    Graphics card: Asus EAH2600 512MB
    Windows XP Pro with SP2
I don't care about time CPU will spend to do the task - before the upgrade it tooks aprox. 5 hours to convert a video and now it tooks only 1h30m :-). What is really important is obtaining the most quality DVD video can be possible. Can you help me?
Perhaps someone already asked for something like my problem. If so, please excuse me and give me the link to that question.
Many thanks to all of you in advance.

    Dag Norum:
First of all, thank you for your quicly reply ;-)
Second, I'm very sorry to make a reply almost a month after your answer. The reason is that I went on holidays without an opportunity to test your tip.
I used Harm's link and than reached to a Bitrate of 8.0000 for all three fields (Min., Target and Max.) and that makes all the difference. Now I have a video with very good quality.
But I haven't tested your tip yet to see if that improves the video final quality.
I want to work always with the maximum quality, no matter what time is needed to convert the video and no matter the length (GB) it costs.
Do you think I can export to an uncompressed file (avi for windows and compressor set to none) and than make the Menus with Encore? It wouldn't be better work on Encore with an MPEG2 file? The DV compressor is MPEG2, isn´t it?
And why you suggested to not have the "Optimize stills" checked? This is to optimize the frames without movement, isn´t it? Many times I use photos inserted in the movie. This option isn't good for that?
Your last suggestion, to go directly from timeline to the end target (MPEG2) is much different than that I use (DV compressor)?
If you could answer my questions I would appreciate.
    Many thanks!
(sorry if my english isn't the better)

Sorry, I'd made a mistake.  When I answer to you I didn't realise that your sugestions was to AVI exportation and not to MPEG2.
Of course you are absolutely right: for an intermediate file, no compression is always better than some compression :-)
But my question about not have the "Optimize stills" checked remains. What does it makes, really?

  • AVI Import Problems

I've imported a couple of AVI files into premiere pro, but they don't seem to have uploaded properly. The audio is fine, but the video only shows the first few seconds, stretched (like slo-mo) to last for the duration of the audio. The files work fine when played with windows media player. I am using CS4.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

I had a similar problem with AVI files from an Oregon Scientific helmet camera, so I rendered them to DV-AVI using Windows Moviemaker as suggested in the Premiere Pro Knowledgebase.
Now I have a different problem: when I apply an effect, everything turns mono-chrome green in the program monitor!  Is there some setting that can be changed?

  • Switch from Adobe CS5 on Windows to Adobe CS5 on a Mac?

    Hello,
In December I bought a student edition of Adobe CS5 Production Premium for Windows from Amazon.com, but just a few months later I found out that the art department at the school that I will attend has a laptop requirement of a Mac. I don't want to have to pay for another license for CS5 since I will no longer be using CS5 on my Windows laptop. Is there any way that I can trade in the license without having to upgrade to CS5.5 on the way to switching to Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Ithu

As a Mac user, I'm used to crazy requirements for Windows only so I sympathize!
There's another possibility: If you have an Intel Mac produced in the past four or five years, you can get free software from Apple called Boot Camp and run it on your Mac. You can run a Windows partition on the Mac and install your Windows version of Adobe CS5 there.
Here is more information on Boot Camp:
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
For a little more money, you can buy Parallels or VMWare so you can run your Mac and Windows partitions at the same time and quickly switch back and forth.
