Crazy Distorted iMac display - Is it the video board?

This iMac just came to me so i don't if there were any symtoms leading up to its failure. It will only boot from CD and when it does the display completely distorted and pinched... take a look:
http://homepage.mac.com/mikeneuhaus/PhotoAlbum6.html
I'm guessing the video board is shot but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

The fact that it won't boot from the hard drive, but only from the CD, sort of indicates that the hard drive is dead. I say "sort of" because you'd have to test it to be sure. Those pictures seem to indicate an issue with the "firing" patterns of the monitor, "the yoke", as David Jenson mentioned. RGB (red, green, blue).
It's too dangerous to play around with the yoke adjustments in these CRT iMacs to be worth the risk. But if you decide to do so, be sure to use a CRT discharge tool first. However, with a dead hard drive, as well as a messed up CRT monitor, I'd consider that iMac to be best used for spare parts, unless you have another one that you can get spare parts from to repair this one.

  • Can I attach an external monitor to my iMac G5 (ALS) if the video card is dead?

I don't know for a fact that the video card is dead, but the screen on my iMac (PPC/ALS) 20" gradually started flaking out over several months and is now dead. Computer boots up fine and I'm looking at it through target mode right now.  I want to keep using the computer if I can, so I am wondering if I can attach an external monitor through the DVI slot even if the video card is kaput.  I'd like to get an opinion or two on this before I buy a used monitor and cable.  Thanks!

You have found the answer. If the video chipset is OK but there is a fault in the internal display or its cabing, an external monitor will work. However, if the video chipset--which is farther "upstream" in the system--goes bad, the option of an external monitor is off the table.

  • How can I get TV show titles to display properly in the video app

    Hi,
I have an iPad (1) which I have updated to iOS5.
I have noticed that in the Video app, TV shows that I have created from my own DVDs only show the season and not the show title, but have a leading comma before the season as though something is missing.
As an example, say I have episodes of Angel Season 3 on my iPad.  The title bar at the top of the page only says " , Season 3" instead of "Angel, Season 3"
This doesn't happen with iTunes purchased content which appears to display as expected.  However I've looked through all the tags and can't see anything I'm missing.
Has anyone experienced the same?  Is there a solution - even if it involves new tags?  I previously got all my tags working really well across iTunes, iPad and Apple TV so this is a bit frustrating for me.
    Thanks,
    Calvin

What kind of local files are you trying to open and what kind of content is on the pages?
Are that files that you've saved from the internet?

  • My IMac is working but the video is not. Anyone help?

No video on my iMac but sound ok etc.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • I want to use Panopto  software on my iMac. It works on the PCs at the office, but when I try to open it on my iMac it only opens the video and audio, it will not open the powerpoint presentations.  Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks.

Why won't the PPt show when I am trying to record and video tape a PPt presentation on Panopto?

    Don't rely on 'Preview'.
Share/Export as .ibooks file and then drag that to iTunes and sync to your iPad.
Still no joy, find a pre-processing recipe ( that includes export for iPad) that doesn't spoil the quality in the process.
Just keep in mind that low quality in means low or lower quality out, in this example.

  • Can I upgrade the video card in my 2009 iMac with the new ATI 2 GB VRAM card?

I am looking for more video RAM for video, CGI and animation work in Blender.
I may purchase Final Cut Pro X in the near future and I need to make sure there is enough video RAM to be able to work with this version of FInal Cut.
I, currently, use Final Cut 4 Express and though this runs fine, through Rosetta, on my current setup, I fear this much newer version may need more graphics power than I have, now.
I, also noticed some lag when working with Blender.
No where near as much graphics or video/animation lag as when I using Blender on my old G4m but it's still slightly noticeable.
I realize I may have to install this myself.
Can I purchase, somewhere, Apple's 1 or 2 GB ATI card seperately or from a third party vendor and install, myself.
I have seen posts that tell that the 27 inch iMac has a removable video card and is not soldered to the logic board like in the 21 inch models.
If true, is there a complete procedure for the iMac breakdown, installation of the video card and reassembly procedure?
My iMac only has the stock 256 MB VRAM graphics card.
If the take down looks more difficult than I feel I can attempt, I have an Apple authorized reseller, repair facilty here, in my area.
Could I purchase the card and have them install it for a fee?
ThanX for all of the info and advice, in advance
    Michel

You will need to check if your model originally was offered with a custom build option that included a different graphics card. If so, you may be able to have it done; here is a fellow who managed to do it on a 2011 iMac (graphics card not soldered) and the model originally offered a better card option:

    Is this yours:

In particular, click on the link in this section of the specs:
I'd check either with Apple and/or an AASP to see if it can be done with yours or if yours is one of those where it is part of the Logic Board/soldered to it.

  • Imac display problem, the resolution seems to be unusual, top bar and all folders on the desktop background is off the screen

Need help with 21" imac display problem. The resolution seems to be unsual, everything on the desktop background goes off the screen. The resolution is set at 1920 x 1080

Quit the game and restart the iPad.
To quit the game - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • IMac 600 SE - boot/power/video issues, help!

Was given this iMac G3 with Tiger 10.4.3 installed, have no knowledge of its history, here's the situation:
When it's first powered on (after not being on for awhile), it usually shuts down right away, after maybe a second or two. The 2nd time the power button is pushed, it usually stays on a little longer before shutting down. The 3rd time it may boot up all the way, but about half the time it will shut down before it's fully booted. By the 4th time, it almost always boots up completely, but when left on, it will shut down by itself at some point, between 10-30 minutes later.
Also, the video display has a bunch of horizontal lines running through it all the time, like bad TV reception with a "rabbit ears" antenna. This condition will get better after the iMac has been on for awhile. Plus the display is somewhat dim, even with the brightness control maxed.
Thinking it might be a power problem, I took it apart and replaced the down converter/power supply with one I had left over from a previous iMac motherboard replacement - didn't change a thing, same symptoms/problems.
SO, is replacing the motherboard the next thing to try, or replacing the video board? Is the video board part of the motherboard? I'm a PC guy that's worked a bit on these old iMacs, so I don't have all the answers.
I have not tried the firmware update, perhaps I should attempt this first, as it appears this iMac is exhibiting some of the symptoms that the firmware upgrades mention. I will probably go ahead with 4.1.9 firmware update and see if that makes a difference.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    iBook G3 500MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    iBook G3 500MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Found out it has the latest firmware.
I did a PRAM update and this seems to have helped. Lines are gone from the display, it's brighter and no power offs on boot since the update. Will keep it running and see what happens.

  • IMac 600 SE - strange power/video problems - need motherboard?

    Hello all,
Got this "project" iMac, have no knowledge of its history. Here's what's going on:
When I first got it, it would take 3 or 4 tries for it to fully boot up, on the first try it would shut off after a second or two, the next try it would get a little further along before shutting down and finally on the 3rd or 4th try, it would boot up completely.
Initially, it had a dim display and a bunch of wavy horizontal lines, like a TV with bad reception using a "rabbit ears" antenna. The person I got it from said from what he had learned, he thought it was a power supply problem.
So I replaced the down converter/power supply with a spare one I had leftover from a previous motherboard replacement, which made no difference at all, same problems.
So I then checked the firmware, which was the latest version (4.1.9). Then I did a PRAM reset, which helped, followed by a PMU reset. I did the PRAM reset several times when problems cropped again, and have done the PMU reset twice, resetting the clock both times.
The shutdowns on boot up have disappeared, but it will occasionally shut down out of the blue after being on for awhile now. The horizontal lines have disappeared, but it now has a strange video problem:
The geometry of the screen is off-kilter by default, so when I go into System Properties to reset the geometry there, and I use the "Rotate" command to correct the overall incline in the display from right to left, the display gets dimmer, and sometimes the horizontal lines reappear, usually on the right side of the screen. When I click on "Factory Defaults", the display gradually brightens again, and if horizontal lines are present, they disappear. This phenomenon doesn't appear to occur when I adjust the display height and position, only with the "Rotate" command, rotating it counter-clockwise. I believe the iMac even shut down once when I was doing this.
I have also noticed an occasional higher-pitched "whine" on boot up, which usually results in an eventual shut down.
So, are these problems symptomatic of a bad motherboard or a bad video board/card? Since I have the latest firmware and have tried both PRAM and PMU resets, and the occasional random shut down still occurs, it makes me think it's a hardware problem.
I just need some feedback here before I purchase a replacement motherboard.
Also, can the video board/card be replaced separately?
    Thanks for any ideas/suggestions/help!

    flaash...
In your situation I believe 2 components need checked first. PAV board and the CRT. Or essentially anything shared by the 2 items, such as the CRT yoke/gun board.
As far as the logic board goes, the video chip-set is part of it (soldered in) and not repairable. Those parts rarely "weaken" (normally just die) so I would be less likely to suspect them.

  • MacBook (2006) HDTV Secondary Display Issue (no streaming video)

I've searched the discussions as thoroughly as I could before posting. I do not have the same issues as many others connecting their Macs to HDTVs for primary or secondary display.
I recently bought a Sony Bravia (KDL-32EX710) and displays the desktop beautifully at 1080p with just the Mini-DVI to VGA cable. However, the only thing it does not display, without a workaround, is streaming video from websites like YouTube, various Gawker media sites and similar sites. For example, going to YouTube loads the entire page with playlists, comments and the audio comes through but nothing but a black box where the video should be (controls are also hidden).
To view videos, I have to drag the Safari window to the MacBook's display to start the video then move it back over to the secondary display to view it. Or, I have to enable the video to be viewed in fullscreen (usually by chance) to be able to see the video.
Watching videos from the local/network drives are fine. Watching streaming videos from Netflix are fine (via Safari). Does this seem like a Flash issue as the problem videos seem to depend on Flash?

It seems updating Flash (for Safari, Firefox and Chrome) did the trick.

  • IMac display connector on logic board

Does anyone know the part number or part description for the connector on the logic board that connects to the display (tdms) cable on an iMac G4? On the logic board, where the old one was, is the notation "j10". The person I got this iMac from tried upgrading the hard drive and accidentally ripped the connector off because they didn't unclip the tdms cable from the drive first.
I figure soldering a new connector on should be a pretty easy fix, but I'm not sure what part to order. I know a few places that I could probably order it from, once I know what I'm ordering.

Seems to me a similar question has appeared in these boards, and
there are a few people who are regulars, that may know the answer.
Been awhile since I've seen the posts regarding this topic, so I can't
just put a link to the correct discussion at this time. Maybe the post
could appear as part of a search; such a dragnet approach may be
daunting and the yield well beyond the scope of your needs.
A slightly different discussion than I recall, but near the neighborhood:

Is there a close-up picture here of the connector in question?

  • Colour Calibration / White Point setting - Is Imac Display really professional quality

I am trying to calibrate my imac 27" using i1 Display2 calibration software. I am trying to set a traget of 6500 using the software but it advises the current is only 5600 and suggests moving the RGB sliders to get this current white point up to my 6500 target. Unfortunatly i have no idea where i find these sliders on my imac. Can anyone advise how i change my current white point to get to the 6500 target?
Also, on the brightness issue, does shades work to reduce my brightness or will it simply interfere with my colour calibration?
Finally, i was going to use my iMac for professional photography. (Mainly on line but some print work required). Honestly, is the iMac display up to the job or should i consider changing
    Thanks

Corbybhy, the glossy screen is the biggest and silliest myth out there. Really.
I have been a professional art director & designer for over 26 years, and by the way, for many years my high end professional CRTS were made of glass (and glossy). Another myth is that the screens cannot be calibrated, and are too bright. Hogwash. I use Spyder3Pro and have had few problems, guessing your device will be the same. Actually, the monitors seem to stay consistant for a heck of a lot longer than the old high end CRTs did. In the old days, most professionals calibrated to 5000k, but these days 6500k is the standard.
The amount of MISINFORMATION that is being spewed always amazes me. If you can keep your lighting consistant and somewhat dim, your life will be easier. Reflections are simply not a major issue, and are also overblown as a issue (by the way, my iMac sits next to a window, I just use shades to dim the ambient light).
I work mostly in print, and produce mostly publications, advertising & marketing materials. I have ZERO issues with my screen matching my proofs. ZERO. I do a huge amount of imaging, retouching & post-processing... all from my 27" iMac.

  • Emac 1.25 video board is gone

The video board in my emac has gone out.
I have a PC monitor with the typical vga end on it.
Is their and adapter-vga to ? that would connect into
the emac so that I can see and transfer what I can to my x-harddrive?
    Thanks.
    Kevin

    This is the correct adaptor:
    Apple Store: Mini VGA-to-VGA adaptor
    BUT....
if the video board is out, the external video-out port won't work. The external port would be useful if the display itself died but the boards feeding it were working.
At this point your best option is to use another Mac (one borrowed will work) to connect to your eMac via a FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable. You can boot the eMac into FireWire Target Disk Mode and see its hard drive on the other Mac as if it were a mounted external drive. Makes it easy to get your files off.
Lacking that, you'll have to remove the hard drive from the eMac case and connect it to another computer using an adapter like this to make the drive a "caseless" external drive:
