Crazy sudden problem, possibly power related

hi forums, my first time posting...
i turned on my computer today to discover that my 2 screens were just blank, appeared to get no signal from the computer. i figured it must be something to do with my graphics cards (2x geForce 7800 GTs in SLI) so tried removing one. i noticed that when i was restarting the computer that sometimes it would power up for about 2 seconds then switch off again, so i assumed it was a power issue, like not enough power getting to the graphics cards thus blank screens. i tried disconnecting my cd/dvd drives, additional graphics card and hard drives but same issue. i tried replacing the power cord and even the 450W power supply unit no diffirence! i'm trying to figure out if it might be something to do with the motherboard, i've checked that everythings plugged in proberly. all parts are about 6 months old, built myself and no problems until today. wondering if anyone has any idea whats wrong or has experienced something similar...???

That's a €/$ 38.- PSU, with like 14A @ 12V, that will never run your system properly.
Not even with 1 card.
You have been lucky it booted at all in the past.

Possible iCloud related problem causing Mail to crash

Hi,
So, to begin a description of my issue, please could I ask you to take a quick scan of my thread over in the "Mail" section of the ASC here:

You will see that following a serious of updates I have a problem where my Mail client keeps unexpectedly quitting on start-up. Crash logs in the above thread.
I've tried all the obvious troubleshooting, but something occured to me:
I can check my mail on iCloud.com fine.
I can check my mail on my iPhone fine.
When I forced a reset of Mail by removing all the Mailboxes, preferences, caches etc associated with it, I was able to open it fine... no problem.
When I reconnected it to my iCloud accoutn (by checking the box in system preferences) it seemed to be working fine.
When I added back the mailboxes "On My Mac" it still seemed to be working fine.
It was only when it started checking for new mail, or perhaps doing some updating or syncing that it crashed again, and ever since it has been crashing on start-up again as per the original problem.
This leads me to think that perhaps the problem is iCloud related and not conencted to the Mail program itself (or Growl as originally though [see my original thread... and it has since been removed and not reinstalled]).
That, or, perhaps one or more of my emails contains an attachment or content which is causing the crash? Is this possible?
If so, how can I discover if this is the case, and which email it may be?
Or perhaps it is unrelated to the above to suggestions, but by posting here someone may be able to offer some further suggestions?

Right. So after a few weeks of putting up with this problem having tried every solution I could think of multiple times I booked myself into an Genius Bar session. Took it in, opened my laptop... bam... suddenly Mail is working fine again!!
Absolutely no idea why, or what the original problem was. Genius Bar gar couldn't spot anything in old crash logs that pointed to the problem... so the mystery remains! At least it works now.
Very irritating!

Time Capsule Problems - Possibly Anti Virus Related?

I have had a 500gb Time Capsule for several months and despite several calls to tech support, I have not been able to get it to properly back up.
Could it possible be related to the McAfee anti virus software that I have running?
The backup will start.. but never reach completion before locking up the system.
Anyone have similar problems?

v5.7 is the latest firmware for your AEB 802.11g.
v7.3.2 is the latest firmware for the TC.
You should probably do these simple maintenance tasks:
Simple Maintenance Tasks:
1. Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and then restart your computer.
2. Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
3. Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort
- click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
- click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
- click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
Make sure you separate the AirPort Base Station and the wireless phone by as large a distance as you can.
You could enact Interference Robustness, but it will reduce the range of your AirPort base station:
1. Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Base Station (main) and click on 'Manual Setup'.
2. Click on 'Wireless' tab and click 'Wireless Options'.
3. Tick 'Use interference robustness, click 'Done', and click 'Update'.
4. Wait for ABS to restart. Restart your computer and test.

Sounds like you need a #1SMC Reset

Disconnect other non-Apple and external hardware except (if applicable) a mouse and keyboard until your finished repairing your machine.
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc. If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.
Other related hardware problems (optional):
Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

La Cie Mini external HD suddenly won't power up

I've had a La Cie Mini HD connected to my iMac G5 for over a year, and I just noticed today that it won't power up at all. I've always used the built-in USB port, and the only other device I've ever connected that way is my iSight camera. (I noticed the La Cie went a little wonky whenever the camera was connected, so I got in the habit of shutting off the La Cie whenever I did a video chat.) I've just tested the iSight on both built-in USB ports and the camera works fine, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the USB port. I thought it might be related to recent software updates (I did the 10.5.8 update and whatever else has come along in the past week), so I repaired disk permissions, but the HD still won't power up. Would appreciate any advice!

(1) Can you take another look at your system and perhaps correct your problem statement?
(2) *Only built-in iSights are connected via USB*, but built-in iSights cannot be "connected" and disconnected. If your camera is an external iSight, it connects via Firewire rather than USB.
If you are having problems with Firewire iSight when connected at the same time as your Firewire LaCie drives, yours is a common problem that has existed as long as iSight. I believe that the problem relates to the differences in data stream timing between multiple connected Firewire devices.
Although adding additional Firewire cards to tower Macs (iMacs do not have this expansion capability) is reported to work for some users, the *only certain work-around that I have ever found is to disconnect other Firewire devices when using your iSight and turn off or disconnect your iSight when using other Firewire devices*.

If your LaCie drive is connected via USB, it does NOT likely conflict with your external iSight (or vice-versa.) In that case, you will need to troubleshoot the drive, cables, ports or other USB possibilities.
(3) If your problem does NOT relate to Firewire devices, we will try to offer other suggestions in response to the details in your reply.

Serious and Sudden Problem with Z10 NEED HELP PLEASE

I have a z10, one of the first that came out in Toronto (if it makes a
difference), a couple of hours ago I came across a serious and sudden
problem.
I was able to swipe left and right between pages of apps, even drop down
from the top, but I cannot open anything, not even make a call or settings
options.
Any time I try to, for a split second it looks like its about to load
something then nothing. (image slides to the right quickly and goes back on
every attempt)
So I first did a reset, same problem, then I did a battery pull (about 15 minutes) and problem presisted.
I tried through USB to do a backup on blackberry manager and perhaps do a
re-install of everything, however when I was prompted for the password of
my device on my PC it kept telling me it was an incorrect password (I use
this blackberry on my computer 4-7 days a week, twice a day sometimes for a
year and I have never miss typed my password nor have i changed it)
After trying everything to make sure the first letter maybe was upper/lower
case, even my other possible phone password, nothing worked..
On the 5th failed attempt my phone prompted me to type 'blackberry', which
i did, then i typed my password on my phone which i type in about 15 times
a day becuase I set my phone to a 5 minute lock and still said it was incorrect.... I am no on 9/10 attempts and lost
for options.
Please if anyone can give me any suggestions, or even how to backup my phone
and whipe it now, or I have an earlier backup form 4 months ago that I
wouldnt mind going back to in worst case scenario.

Sorry, no I haven't experienced that. It could be from an app you downloaded but that's just a guess. Wiping the device will tell us a lot. If the device still doesn't work you'll want to reload the OS using BB Link. if it still doesn't work after that then warranty support will be necessary through Rogers.

Sounds very relevant.
Do you have access to another computer with Numbers installed?
If so, do your files open properly on that computer?
If so, then the problem is your computer itself, which is best posted in a different forum.

Randomly shuts down when closing screen...power related?

I'm not 100% sure this is power related, but I see all kinds of other posts about similar phenomena. I'm posting anyway because I didn't find one that is exactly the same as this issue. If there is a thread I missed, please point me to it.
Anyway, here's the problem. Sometimes when I close the lid of my macbook to put it to sleep it will restart. It will play the startup sound almost as soon as I close the lid. This happens without regard to whether the computer is plugged in or not. I have checked software update, and it's not telling me I need a firmware update or anything. I even tried downloading a firmware update that was recommended for some issues, but my mac told me I didn't need it (so I didn't install it). I would appreciate any suggestions.
I have a second issue which may or may not be related - sometimes my macbook will not wake up from sleep, and I have to hold the restart button. This also happens without regard to whether the computer is plugged in. Again, suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

You might try to reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and/or PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory). Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?
The SMC controls some of the sleep functions.

I Think I Can Confirm That The Reception Problem Is Software Related.

This is my first post on here and I just wanted to show everyone something very interesting that I discovered about IOS 4.0
I recently updated my Iphone 3GS to IOS 4.0 BUT I never updated my wife's Iphone 3GS, her phone is still running 3.1.3
I did a little experiment and I think that the Iphone 4's reception problem is Software related. My 3GS does the same exact thing the Iphone 4 is doing, yet my wife's 3GS running 3.1.3 is not. Please watch the video I made to better understand.

No sir, it was a thread I started concerning some basic testing, etc. The discussion was going along well I thought with nothing blatantly wrong. For those that were following it, I found this in the PTCRB cert. database. Looks like the baseband FW was certified back on June 7th and would seem to fit that this will possibly affect the older units as well. Also see second link which mentions 64GB model that may be in pipeline. Good luck to this thread as it will probably be deleted shortly too.

Old Reliable G4 mirror suddenly won't power up....YIKES!!

my trusty, G4 MDD, almost 4 years old now, never had problems, all of sudden will not power on at all when the power button is switched on....I tried resetting the button on the motherboard next to the battery (PMU?) and still nothing...
from my research, it sounds like a power supply, but is there any thing I can do at this point to at least try to get this thing powered up?
I'm not really anywhere near a mac tech, but I do have other issues
a) in case it is a power supply and it needs to be replaced, will it affect the files on my boot drive?
b) I do have a spare 733 Quicksilver...I had been running a separate audio drive that I'm sure I can probably install on the Quicksilver to at least retrieve my audio files, but if I remove the boot drive on the 1.25 mirror door, can that simply be installed on the Quicksilver also to retrieve some other very important stuff...

Go ahead and try it. Connect the external device to to the QS and check System Preferences. If it is bootable, System Preferences / Startup Disk will list it. At that point you can select it as your startup drive and restart.
By the way, I suspect you already know this, the power supplies of the QS and the MDD are not interchangeable.

Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.

Copy and paste adjustment problem/ possible bug.

I have just encountered a very strange problem/ possible bug.
I have been working on a file in photoshop cs5 that had come from lightroom 5.3. This was then saved (automaticaly becomes tiff file in Lightroom). I then wanted to make some more adjustments to it in lightroom (using local adjustment clarity). I then tried to copy the settings of the adjustment brush from the tiff to the original raw file. This is where it gets very strange. The adjustments are copied but they are rotated ccw by 90 degrees! I can replicate this every time.
Could someone else try to see if this problem exists on their catalogs or if its a corrpution problem my end.

Sudden loss of power, shutdown

I have a Imac 9.1, attached to a UPS and twice in the last month while doing the most trivial of things (today scrolling an internet page) the unit suddenly powered off? Just "Blink" screen black and power off. I'm not sure what it is.
My question is, is there a "systems event" log that the system captures when things like this happen which point to something that was going on right before the lights went out? Or is this merely a matter of waiting till it happens with some degree to repetitiveness that I take it in for an analysis at Apple. Any advice would be appreciated.

The sudden loss of power may well damage your HD..My advice, don't use the UPS till you are sure of the reasons for the power outage..Use a good Anti Surge unit until then...L

My HP Notepad 6730b has a problem with power. I can't power into the laptop. I have checked the power adapter and it works fine. No lights flash when i plug it into power. Can any one please help??

IPad bought on May 29. This is the first attempt to use. I also bought the screen protector and apparently the problem started after I installed the shield and the battery charged, which was low.
I followed the instructions, made the recovery at iTunes, sync, but I could not turn on the Touch Screen. The clock remains stopped at 9AM. I will try an Apple store in Brazil to see what is happening and then notice what happened. Best regard and thanks for the help

Hello all - hope someone can help with my query
I have been using my 2 year old laptop normally and switched off last night by the usual method - start - shutdown. Have had no problems at all with this laptop since I got it.
No notifications that bettery was not charging etc.
This morning when I went to switch it on, it failed to start. I noticed there were no green lights on the front panel. Pressing the on switch, nothing happens. All indications are that no power is getting to the laptop
Removed the battery and replaced it
Checked power cord/lead/jacks/all connections - all pushed in etc - wiggled jack etc
Husband has exactly the same model, so we tried switching battery - his was fully charged, my laptop would not power up with his battery
Also tried using his power cable - nothing happened.
Don't wan to to spend a fortune on it - could it just be as simple as a fuse or something - any help appreciated!

There must be some problem with power supply electronic.
Disconnect AC power supply and remove battery. Leave notebook for a while and try again with AC power supply only.
If the same will happen again Im afraid you need professional help and contact authorized Toshiba service provider in your country.
