Create a disc of high school football game

Hello,
I am a high school football coach. We just a new camera. It is a Panasonic HDC. I had my film guy film the Varsity game tonight and all I want to do is take the video from the camera and make it right into a DVD. I do not want to edit it or play with it or anything like that. I also want it to be really fast. I would love to get back to the office, plug it, and let it do its thing. Please help!! Thanks.

Welcome to the forums.
Creating a DVD can be smooth, but it's rarely fast (depends for one on how fast your Mac is). Here's a video tutorial on using iDVD's One Step capability: http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd-onestep

  • Do I use compressor to rip High School football game from DVD?

I am making a recruitment video for a Senior in High School.  I film all of his local games, but two weeks ago they played out of state.  He just gave me a DVD of the game footage.  Would I use compressor to turn the footage back into an editable format?  I use ProRes LT in FCP, but have never had to use someone else's DVD.  I know the footage has already been compressed since it has been placed on a DVD, so I want to use the best options for the best quailty.

Look at Flip4Mac. The free version should allow you to view the wmv file. This paid versions should allow you to convert it. You can try before you buy to make sure it works. It should work with Compressor.
Another option is the free open-source Handbrake. I have no personal experience with this for wmv, but I have heard anecdotally that it may work.

  • Best Outdoors WAPs for a High School Football Field?

Ubiquiti is my choice if you don't need any advanced features.  How many APs depends on how big the seating area is and how many people you expect to connect.  I'm also under the assumption the bleachers are metal, so you need to make sure you take that into your WLAN design.

What access points do you recommend for an outdoors situation? We want to provide Wi-Fi to spectators at a high school football field. The seating area is restricted to a single location. Two to three APs will cover the area.
The initial purchasing price and on-going costs are of concern. We would prefer not to have  recurring costs when it comes to the access points.
We have looked at Meraki, Ubiquiti, Aerohive. Which ones would you recommend?

  • High school basketball games highlight dvd help needed.

Problem: FCE 3.5 stops capturing at every time break.
Background: First of all I don't know much about FCE as it is my sons program and I am trying to help him out. Please bare with me if I don't get the terminology correct.
He is capturing basketball games recorded from a Panasonic model VDR-D210 camcorder that uses mini dvd discs. Because there is no firewire out port on this camera he is capturing thru a Pyro a/v Link analog to DV video converter, then firewire out to his intel imac running 10.4.11.
FCE 3.5 is capturing(video only no audio needed) thru this converter, but stops at every camera time break. He has about 20 games to go and it would be nice to be able to get the whole game without it stopping every minute or two.
He is volunteering to do this project for them but at this rate it will take forever. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

    Hi Jim
DVD camcorders are not the easiest source for video editing. Since you are using an analog to digital converter, you need to change your FCE easy setup. In FCE open the drop down menu "Final Cut HD" > easy set up > DV -converter DV NTSC or DV - converter DV PAL depending on where in the world you are. > set up.
That should take care of your problem. FCE is a complex program. You'll face a steep learning curve to get your video done, especially since it sounds like you're under time constraints. You may be better off using iMovie 6. It's less complicated and is great for editing DV. You can create something that's simple or complicated. And, you'll face less of a learning curve.
If you already own imovie 8, you can download imovie 6 for free here:

Good luck. Let us know how your project turns out.

  • Has anyone used iPhoto to create and sell their high school's yearbook?

Seems like a much more cost efficient way then the companies that are out there.  I have worked as yearbook advisor a few years back and hated it.  It was expensive, software was not user friendly, and always ran at a loss.  I was approached this year to do it and politely said no, but then I thought maybe iPhoto is the solution.  Just wondering if it's been done and if there are any "samples" out there.  Thanks for any input!

Probably someone has - but they are not likely to be on this forum
    I see a few issues
1 - cost per book is high
2 - layouts are limited although you probably can live with that if you want to
3 - you are limited to 100 pages - depending on your schoold that could be a problem
4 - paper is glossy and may be hard to write on
For an overview of layouts available Liz Castro did a great web site for iPhoto '09 - iPhoto '11 is pretty much a superset of these so it gives you some idea of that is available - http://www.iphotobookthemes.com/pmwiki.php?n=Main.HomePage  --  as far as I know there is no similer site for iPhoto '11

  • Camcorder to tape basketball and football games

I'm in the market for a camcorder that I can use to tape high school football and basketball games, and then load that footage right on to my imac and use in FCE. Any suggestions? Do I need HD? I've been converting footage from VHS onto a DVD, then ripping/converting it using MactheRipper and MPEG software.

I've been converting footage from VHS onto a DVD, then ripping/converting it using MactheRipper and MPEG software.
As you've probably discovered, that is a terrible workflow - both for the amount of time it takes as well as the tremendous loss of quality.
Do you need HD? That's a question only you can answer. You don't mention what your intended form of delivery will be (broadcast?, DVD?, web?) but let's assume you'll be delivering on DVD. Since DVD is a standard definition format, an SD camera would suffice, or you could go with an HD camera and either shoot in HD then down-convert for editing and delivery, just shoot, edit and deliver in SD mode.
You also didn't mention any budget for this ... without that it would be impossible to offer any specific advice on models to consider.

  • High School highlight video (Widescreen or standard)

I am making a high school football highlight video for college recruiters. The capture video is widescreen. Should I convert it to a 4:3 project or leave it 16:9. I am not sure if they will be using widescreen televisions.

If the footage is already in widescreen, then keep it in widescreen. If they have a widescreen TV, great. If they don't no harm-no foul. Also, football is a sport that lends itself to widescreen viewing and you can cover more of the field with less wasted space, aka, no useless crowd above or below the field of play. Keep it widescreen, just make sure the DVD you make is an anamorphic DVD so that if they do have a widescreen TV that your video won't appear in the middle of a black frame.
    Good luck,

  • I want to know what to buy to create athletes, high school, portfolios for the 4 years they are with us???

I want to know what software to buy for our high school to create mutli-media portfolio: visual, text, video, stats etc... for each of our high school athletes and store them for their application to colleges/universities. What do I buy??? or want to accomplish this??? or is their not a product for it in Adobe??
Also as a school how do I buy it if I can get the correct product, Thank you,
    Michael

I do not think Adobe has such a product.
Contact a friendly school (probably out of your conference) and see what they use. Some football teams, for example, use proprietary systems for game videos.
The only ones I handled were for individual players done as custom processes.
John's point is important: you need to know your final format - I would look for a web based option where you simply provide the college the link, or if you prefer, login credentials to control access.

  • Football Program for high school

Where can you find templates for Indesign? My high school yearbook staff has to create the football program that has various size ads, rosters, pictures of the teams. What is the best way to do it?

If you really want to find templates, your best bet would be to simply type "InDesign Template" into your search engine.
Because InDesign's target customer is the professional designer, (most of whom typically don't use templates), templates are not necessarily an integral part of the product, and most of what exists is aftermarket or hobby-born.

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

I have purchased Adobe XI Pro and created a form for entering bowling scores to submit to newspaper for my high school team.  I can not figure out how to get pdf's into my documents folder on my iPad so that I can access the files in bowling alleys where I do not have a Wi-Fi connections.  I need to be able access files without going to acrobat.com.  Help!!!@

Post the PDF files to a web site. The browse to them in Safari on the iPad.  When you Open the files specify the Open to occur in Adobe Reader.  Then you can have/Save them in your Documents folder on the iPad.   An iPad has limited access to files otherwise.

  • Flash for High School Student?

I am an animation teacher and we might have to switch from teaching a 3D program to teaching Flash. Is this a valid program to teach high school students animation? Is this only used for gaming or is it also used in the animation world? Any recommended website references?

flash is not a 3d modeling program.
it can be used to create 2d animation and to display 3d animation.
because of its animation capabilities, it can be used to create web, desktop and mobile games.  because of its support for a programming language (actionscript), it can be used to create web, desktop and mobile applications.
and, my guess, is most games and apps use some programming and some of the drawing tools in flash.

  • Need to extract faces and names from a multi-portrait high school year book scanned page

I am responsible for generating individual high school student portraits (5" x 7") from scanned 600 dpi pages of portraits from my high school beacon (year book). There are 16 - 20 black and white portraits per page and there are between 800 and 850 students in my graduating class.
The end product is taking an estimated 850 portraits from multi- portrait pages and convert them into individual 5" x 7" B&W photos.
Attached is one of the pages of portraits to experiment with. Other than selecting each individual portrait and pasting it into a new image from the clipboard, I don't know of a faster way to do it. This will nearly take forever.
Might there be a way to create a grid of selections template that applies to each page and extracts the portraits and names separating them into individual images?
I couldn't download a sample for some reason. The portraits are arranged 4 wide and 5 down like below table but without the header.  The names are below the faces. If one of you has an idea, I could email the full size image to you.

    Header 2

    Nothing shows up.
    1. Go to www.pixentral.com
    2. Put your cursor in the blank provided for the upload (where it says your image)
    3. Click on the Browse button
    4. When the "Choose File" box pops up, navigate to where your photo is stored, click on your photo file, then at the bottom of the box, click the Open button
    5. It will come back to Pixentral with the path to your photo shown in the blank
    6. Now on the Pixentral screen, click on the Send button
    7. Once your photo is loaded (you'll see it on the Pixentral screen) scroll down to the bottom of the photo where you'll see two lines of text, one that says HTML and one that says Forum
    8. You need to copy all of the text in the box after "Forum"
    9. An easy way to select it is to triple click on the text OR drag your mouse all the way from the first character to the last character of the text
    10. Once it is selected, press Ctrl-C to copy it
    11. Then go to your message on the forum here and paste your link by pressing Ctrl-V

A Mac is a very expensive for someone your age, not only that you will have to learn Windows to educate yourself and get a job as nearly everyone used Windows at work.
Installing Windows on a Mac is no easy process and it costs money as you have to buy a Windows license, then Apple upgrades the Mac operating system annually which you will have to replace and all your software with newer versions.
Ideally unless your rich, you should get a regular Windows 7 laptop for about $400 or so, because there are some things about computers and how to handle them that having a $3000 Mac  is going to be a costly lesson if it's lost, broken or stolen.
Also Mac's last about 3-5 years, so locking all your files into a Mac only will cost you another $2000-$3000 the next time around, instead of a mere $400 with a Windows machine.
Most Mac users also have to run Windows to remain current or work with others, only a small portion of us use OS X exclusively.
If you want to 3D game, a Windows 7 tower is your machine, as you can replace the video card for newer, faster ones as newer/better games come out.
See the chart here, Mac's get blown away when it comes to 3D gaming, also there are more software choices on Windows.
