Create a network with a wireless modem?

Hi just got a macbook pro not quite new. Am wondering can I set up a network to share files and stuff from my windows xp sp3 computer? I have a wireless modem with a built in router from the phone company. Do I need to buy anything like airport extreme or something to be able to connect my mbp to share files? Am very new at all this and am not understanding alot of what's being discussed on these forums. The mbp connects fine to the internet via wifi have been able to set up mail which I can receive but not send have had no luck with transferring my stuff in itunes to my mbp. If anyone can direct me would be very much appreciated. I would like to put all my iphone stuff on the mbp.

Says it has Airport Extreme 802.11 a/b/g/n Don't know what those letters mean. Thought maybe I was supposed to buy that little box from apple to network everything together but see others using just a router. So confusing. Unfortunately I have to keep the dell computer with windows and that's where everything is stored for now. Wanted to get some of my pictures and my itunes stuff into my mac so that could be used strictly for syncing my iphone.

G4 (800MHz) connects to airport network via N300 wireless modem but won't bring up a browser page (Safari or Firefox) - so the connection is there, everything says its a goer - I get a clear black signal icon in the menu bar on top, and a clear signal strength in the Internet connect dialogue box - - but when I run either of the browsers, it just says 'not connected to internet' - even for the 'software update'.

apple > system preferences > network
Double click on network connection you are using.
Pick the TCP/IP tab.
Verify that you have a DNS Server.
You can use

to diagnose the situation.

If pinging 17.254.3.183 works but pinging Google.com doesn't. You have a bad DNS Server address.

Trying for wireless network with D-Link modem, but no Internet connection

I am trying to figure out a way to use my iBook elsewhere in my house, without being physically connected to my modem. I have a SpeedStream 5100 modem, use DSl, and just got a D-Link DI-524 router. My problem is that I cannot access the configuration page for the router. When I type in 192.168.0.1, as instructed, my we b browser "times out." I also cannot "ping" this address.
I have tried multiple web browsers, have tried resetting the modem and the router, and have tried to contact D-Link and SBC for help, to no avail.
My iBook recognizes a wireless network when all of the machines are connected, but I can't get online on either machine.
As instructed by D-Link, I have changed the ISP address in my network preferences, but something doesn't seem to be working.
What am I doing wrong?
By the way, I have downloaded no firmware or drivers for the D-Link; I just hooked it up.

Yes, the cable from the modem is plugged into the WAN port; the cable from the iMac is plugged into the WLAN port (I've tried all four ports). (By the way, don't feel bad about asking; I am not the most tech-savvy.)
The IP address I have been trying to connect with the router/modem setup is 192.168.0.1. There is no way for me to input any numbers in the "router" box; it is blank.
Normally, when I connect using DSL, my IP address is different, and there is a router number there, too.
I have tried contacting D-Link's customer support via e-mail. After exchanging about three e-mails with them, they have declared me beyond their help. Ugh! I'm sure it's something simple that I'm not doing, but I just don't know what!

Do you have to set up AE inBridge mode with existing wireless modem router?

I've just bought the AE and Apple TV. My plan was to basically use my existing Netgear wireless modem router for the internet only and set up the AE as the wireless router. I also bought the AE to boost the strength, print wirelessly and I thought it might work better with the Apple TV. The other things I use on my home network are ipad, iphone 4, HP DV6 Notebook, Toshiba Notebook and PS3.
I've plugged the Netgear into the AE with an Ethernet cable. I initially started with the "replace existing access point with AE", as I thought I was replacing the Netgear with the AE. This option left me with internet working and a blinking amber light on the AE.
I then did a hard reset and started again. I diabled the wireless on my old modem/router and chose the "create wireless network" option in airport utility. I think it worked because I have internet and a green light but to be honest I have no idea what I did. I know it's in bridge mode but only because I didn't know how to set up the other options.
Also, I've ended up with three networks out of this process. The default network for the AE (but it has one of those yellow error icons next to it in the available network list), the one I set up and a 5ghz of the one I set up. Neither the default network of the 5ghz network show up in the Internet and Networking control panel, which is where I delete them. I just thought this was odd.
What I'd like to know:
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
As you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing. I'm basically just clicking stuff and seeing if it works.

You don't have to but, most likely, it will be the best configuration choice when you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) connected to your main Internet router by Ethernet. In this configuration, all NAT & DHCP services will continue to be provided by the Netgear router. This will allow all wired or wireless clients connected to the AEBSn to get their IP address (and be on the same subnet) from the Netgear ... and this would allow clients connected to either router to "see" each other.
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If, for some reason, you wanted to create a separate subnet, configuring the AEBSn as a router would allow for this.

By default, your AEBSn will create two wireless networks with the same Network Name; one broadcasting in the 5 GHz band, and the other in the 2.4 GHz band. The default name for both of these will be Apple Network NNNNNN. You have the option, within the AirPort Utility, to change the names of each network.
When connected by Ethernet, and in bridge mode, it would be beneficial to name your AEBSn's networks the same as that provided by the Netgear. This would create what is called a "roaming" network ... where you literally can roam with a laptop from one router to the other and still be on the "same" network. This also is a way to extend the wireless range of the Netgear.
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
As a minimum, you will have three wireless networks: one provided by the Netgear and two provided by the AEBSn. By giving them all the same Network Name, they will appear as one to any wireless client. However, they will all show up in a utility like iStumbler or AirRadar.

Yes. Operating a wireless network in the 802.11n Radio Mode in the 5 GHz Radio Band offers the best potential bandwidth ... around 300+ Mbps. The only real drawback of the higher frequency band is that the signal strength drops off more rapidly with distance than in the lower frequency band. Also higher frequencies cannot penetrate objects (like walls) as well.
Ideally, you would want to place your Apple TV or other streaming devices in the same room as the 5 GHz network ... or connect them to the router by Ethernet.

It seems you have a network conflict that isn't allowing your MacBook Pro to connect to the internet. This may be caused by both computers sharing identical network settings. You may want to consider creating a new network location on your MacBook Pro to assign new network settings. The following article will instruct you on how to do that:
OS X Yosemite: Add a network location
A network location is a group of network settings
A network location is a group of network settings for your various network services (Ethernet or Wi-Fi for example).
If you often change network settings, you may find switching between locations quicker and easier than repeatedly modifying individual groups of settings.
For example, you might want to make a location for “home,” where you connect to the Internet with a telephone modem, and a location for “office,” where you connect to your company network and the Internet using Ethernet or AirPort.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.
Click the Location pop-up menu, choose Edit Locations, then click Add .
Enter a name for the location, then click Done.
Enter settings for each network connection service you want to use in that location.
After you create your locations, you can switch all of your network settings by clicking the Location pop-up menu and choosing a different location.

Creating a network with SBC DSL...

I have a series of questions both trouble shooting and opinionated concerning setting up a wireless network with my new Airport Express and my current DSL provider: SBC. Just for information purposes my account ends in @sbcglobal.net. Now I have an old Dlink wireless router that worked fine but I would really like the speed of G and ease of apple... SO
Trouble Shooting
1) On my old dlink router I used PPPoe with my username (ending in @sbcglobal.net) and password so the router could athenticate and connect to the internet. I have since tried doing a similar setup by choosing PPPoe in the apple express menu and setting up the same user fields BUT when I connect to the network on my Mac I have no internet and in the upper right hand corner where the WIFI signal is it says "negociating..." and continues to says this... Any ideas on other settings I have not enabled or such? Anyone else with SBC DSL gotten their airport express to work?

2) My old router operates on the WIFI B standard and I was wondering how much better will the G standard be? Will I get better reception and distance throughout the house over B AND will the speed be that different?

No, if anything it might be marginally less.
AND will the speed be

In terms of an internet connection you will not notice the difference, as most internet connections are much much slower than even 802.11b.
Where you will notice the difference is internal file transfers between clients on your network.

Using Airport Extreme (802.11n) with Netgear Wireless Modem Router

I have a quick question, can I use the Airport Extreme in a wireless modem router?(http://www.netgear.co.uk/wirelessadslrouterdg834g.php)
By plugging the Airport into the Netgear router would I be able to by pass and run a network this way. I have a 802.11n enabled MacBook and Apple TV, the Netgear is the weakest link!!!

neptune2000's post was implying that you connect the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the Netgear.
The AEBS does NOT contain a modem. Therefore you will need a modem, either the Netgear or another.

Bridge the TC..
I am assuming this is cable internet.. not wireless.
Just leave the Verizon doing what it is doing.. with the TC bridged you just plug it into the modem with ethernet.
To bridge the TC go to dhcp and NAT page for v6 utility.. or Internet tab for v5 utility and pick the connection sharing off bridge mode.

Does Airport Extreme work with a wireless modem?

I purchased an Airport Extreme to work with an old Zoom non-wireless modem. Before I could install the AE, my modem died. My ISP sent me a new Pace wireless modem. Can I still use my AE with this new modem even though the Pace has a wireless feature?

Yes, all you need to do is turn off the WiFi feature of the modem & set the Extreme to bridge mode.

Created wifi network with AE won't allow me to access internet

I have uverse internet, 2 AE's connected through ethernet cables via cable boxes. I set both AE's to create their own wireless network. I gave them both the same name and password. The password and settings mirror the uverse modem. What might the problem be? I can connect to the AE's, but on the created network I cannot connect to the internet. Thanks for any knowledge.

I assume that you have checked to make sure that all of the Ethernet cables, switches, etc are operating correctly.
Check to make sure that both AirPorts are configured to operate in Bridge Mode, and Update both devices if any changes have been made. Wait a full minute for each AirPort to restart after you click Update. Post back with info on what version of AirPort Utility you are using if you are not sure how to do this.
Then, power off the entire network and wait a few minutes
Start the Uverse router first, and let it run a few minutes
Then, start up one AirPort the same way
Then, start up the other AirPort the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up.
Report on your results.

Help Required Setting up a Network with 2 Wireless Routers

My network is based on 2 hubs:
Room 1 - Main Hub
Phone socket (where line enters my house)
Modem
WRT610N router
Homeplug connected by ethernet cable to router
Room 2 - Media Centre
Homeplug
Netgear DG834G v1
Room 2 includes a NAS and media streamer wired to the DG834G, which as I understand it still need to talk via the WRT610N. I'd like to upgrade my network further and remove the weakest point (currently Homeplugs) and therefore improve connectivity between hub 1 and 2. In upgrading, I want everytthing to have gigabit ethernet ports, but for the 2 hubs to be connected only via wireless link (wired link may be possible in long term, but not at present).
I have already taken the step of purchasing a 2nd WRT610N, but am now unsure if the link can be established between the 2 of them without using a cable connection. Does anyone know if/ how this can be achieved, or do I need to buy something else?

You have two alternative here..First is Wireless Bridge(WET610N),which will communicate with the router wirelessly and it it will provide the LAN Connection further.You can connect a switch to the bridge and all other devices hard-wired to the bridge to get connection...However,it will not give you the Wireless Signal.
The Seconds alternative in my opinion is an Access Point(WAP4410N)...Which will receive the wireless signal from your router and will repeat the signal wirelessly to your Wireless devices if set in a Repeater Mode.

Creating Two Networks with Different Securities and Double NAT Error

I have a Time Capsule which is connected to my cable modem and an AirPort Extreme connected to my Time Capsule via the WAN port. I configured the AEBS to create a wireless network using WEP (I have a few devices that don't support WPA) so I can use two different wireless securities. The AEBS flashes the amber light and once I connect to its network, the AirPort Utility states that it has a "Double NAT" issue. I used my iPhone 5 to connect to the AEBS network and I can access the Internet just fine.
Is this issue one that can be resolved? If so, how? Or do I ignore the issue? If I ignore, what are the implications?

You need to configure the AEBS in Bridge Mode to eliminate the Double NAT error, which is slowing down your connection...and may likely cause other issues depending on how the network is configured.
If you do not know how to do this, we need to know what operating system you are using on the computer that is being used to configure and setup the AEBS.
