Create a new roll name on import

Instead of iPhoto numbering new rolls, is there a way it can ask me for a name each time I import? That would be easier than going back later and renaming the numbered rolls into something with more meaning.

Yes there is
When you connect your camera and get the Import Screen, you have the option to Name the Roll and add a brie description at the botom of the page.

Help! I am having difficulties creating a new roll within my library. I have followed the directions in the help menu (i.e. clicking library, selecting the photos i want, file>create film roll) BUT when I go to the file menu, 'create film roll is not an option highlighted. Has to be a glitch in iPhoto. First try running Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. Are you at the latest version, 6.0.2? If not update to that and try again. Lastly you might have to reinstall iPhoto from the source disks it came on. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Then install iPhoto, apply the latest update and repair disk permissions.

Use the Address Book.
iChat and the Address Book are linked. If you have stored Real names in the iChat info about your contacts they shuould be in the Address Book. You can then drag them back to to the new Buddy list.
The AIM application allows you to backup the Buddy list of one account/screen name and then import it into the new one as another workaround.

HT3231 I ended up having to create a new user name because the migration assistant wouldn't let me put the data back onto my original user name. I now have to log into the new user name to see all my data, apps, photographs etc. What went wrong?

I have a Mac that was part of the recall involved with the faulty Seagate hard drives. The folks at the Apple Store near me changed the hard drive early December, 2012. I had my data, etc. all backed up on a portable hard drive. When the Mac was returned with the new hard drive, I used the Migration Assistant to bring everything back over. Trouble was, it wouldn't let me bring it over to my original user name. I was forced to create a new user name that became the place where everything was restored. I can't see any data on my old user name, just the basics. Everything is on the new user name but I wish I didn't have it (just want everything back the way it was originally). Any suggestions?

Probably the cleanest thing to do is to erase and freshly install the operating system on the new drive. Then, on the first boot up, don't create a new user, instead select the option in Setup Assistant to immediately bring things over from your backup, which you must connect via USB or firewire. Setup Assistant will then recretae your old user to look just like it used to.
Before doing this, make sure you realize you will lose everything on the new drive by erasing it, and make sure your backup is still viable.

I encountered this problem yesterday, when I tried to play some songs in my ITunes library on a new computer; this is an ITunes library that I had moved from my old computer.
I called Apple Support, and the excellent Tech person began looking into the problem.
Meanwhile, while I was waiting for him, I Googled the problem (which I should have done first): lots and lots of people (I discovered) have bumped into this same frustrating problem.
Yes: the problem arises when you move to a new computer with an ITunes library that includes songs you bought, way back when, using an AOL ID.
Apple Support contacted ITunes. And ITunes tracked down my AOL account, and then issued me (that is, me and Apple Support) a new Apple ID. There are two or three additional steps; they are not hard, but you need the combo of help from Apple Support and ITunes. The key thing is getting the new Apple ID, which you must have, and which, once it has done its work, you then can ignore..
I can now listen to everything--and I am signed in to ITunes using my current, usual Apple ID.
Note: All of this would be easier and simpler for us if we could actually speak to someone at ITunes; the only way we can get to a "live" person there is by contacting someone at Apple Support.

It is working for me. Two ways to import into an existing project:
Select a project and view it in the browser in split view. If you drag image files from a folder directly into the filmstrip, the dragged image files will be added to that project.
Or select a project in the library, before you open the Import panel. Then you can switch the destination project in the Import Settings from "new Project" to the selected project.
Have you tried these methods? Where does it not work for you?

Creating a new folder starts up import dialog box...

When I click the plus sign on the folders panel, it takes me to the create folder dialog where I can browse to the location of the new folder.
Sometimes, after clicking OK, LR then starts up the import dialog box with a heap of images to import which I then need to cancel. I should have checked where the images were from but have not thought to do so before this post.
Anyway, is there any functionality in LR that should import images when a new folder is created? I think this happens when I don't have a folder selected...not sure.. away from LR at the moment.
As an aside, I wish you could click the + on the folders panel and LR would create a subfolder at the selected location with the name ready to edit, rather than going to a new dialog and having to browse to the location.

I can't duplicate this. Whether I have highlighted an existing LR folder or not, clicking the "+" brings up the create folder dialog, I browse to a location and create a subfolder. That folder then becomes a LR folder. If I do have a current LR folder highlighted, the process (or just right clicking on the folder name and choose "Create Folder") brings up the create folder dialog with the current LR folder as the parent. I can create a new folder and it will become a LR subfolder of the highlighted one.

Actually, the new dialog that opens for me (as described above) places me in the selected folder - all I do is click the create folder button in that window and a new subfolder is made. I think the reason LR won't just create a new subfolder without going to a new dialog is that the folders panel lists the "LR folders" which are a parallel universe to the "real folders" on your drive. Perhaps the LR engineers thought that by providing you with the browser/creator dialog, they were giving you more control. Who knows.

I need to create a new iPhoto library and import 'ORIGINALS' from a time machine backup on an external hard drive.

I made the mistake of installing OS 10.9 on my older MacBook Air and the machine has become horribly slow and unpredictable. I visited the Apple store and questioned a 'Genius' about getting rid of 10.9 and reinstalling the previous OS 10.6 for which I have the disks. He advised that I should reformat the Air, reinstall 10.6 and then restore from the Time Machine backup that I have.
He explained that of course, after I reinsatll 10.6, I couldn't import the iPhoto Library from the backup drive complete because it had been recreated using the OS 10.9 and wouldn't work with 10.6. I would have to create a new 10.6 iPhoto Library and move the actual ORIGINALS, from the backup into it. He actually had the path to the iPhoto library shown on my Air to the point of >Pictures >iPhoto Library > ORIGINALS.
I didn't question how he got the path to the point of > ORIGINALS and figured that it wouldn't take too much to do what he suggested. Now I can't find how to get to point of seeing the ORIGINALS in the path. When I go through the path >Pictures >iPhoto Library, the next column shows me the iPhoto Library icon and the info re size, creation date etc.
Can anyone advise how to get to the 'ORIGINALS' in order to import them and does anyone have any further suggestions that might help in completing this procedure ?

p.s. is there any way of looking at a Time Machine backup and finding what O.S. was present when the backup was produced ?

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.

If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

Creating a new short name

I understand that changing the shortsname is a bad idea. Will I end up with lots of permission problems if I:
- created a new admin account
- copy all files from old short name account into new one
- delete old account

Not really. It is only a bad idea if you go in an start re-naming files.
Here is a utility to change your short name. I haven't tried it. Apple also provides some very complicated instructions to do the same thing.
Actually, in addition to being complicated, Apple's instructions are just plain wrong. Do a good backup, then try that Dan Frakes program. It it were me, I would just log in as a different admin account, change my short name in NetInfo, rename my home directory, log in, and clean up any poorly written programs that happen to break.

10.5.8 created a new HDD name!

Since updating, even on the welcome screen (to choose User), my computer name had a (2) beside it. Now on the Finder, my hard-drive name has that (2) beside it also. Spotlight has reindexed my whole hard drive. I'm afraid to plug my TimeCapsule backup, in case it decides to backup my whole hard drive again.
I tried rebooting but it didn't help. That (2) still appears. Even my AppleTV trying to find my usual SMB: directories can't, as the computer's name has changed.
Any ideas on how to fix this??

This is usually ( but not always) caused by the router remembering a previous computer and since two computers with identical names cannot exist on the same LAN, it renames the current one (2).
Not a big deal, and yes, it's good you did not turn on TM. It happened to me and TM did not create a new backup, but it did change the name of the computer everywhere to the new one.
Easy fix.
In system preferences under Sharing, simply change the name back to the original name and log out and back in, or reboot.
Be sure the old name sticks before turning on TM.
I am not sure about the HDD name change, but just change it back manually, as well.
If you point your browser into the router GUI you will see, usually in the Main area, where all the computer names are assigned/stored, your computer. You should only see your computer once.

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPhone by tapping on the id in Settings > Store and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the phone. If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps.

I'm currently working on a DYNAMIC DROPDOWN SEARCH for a
recruitment company Where the visitor selects either "ANNUAL" or
"HOURLY" in the first menu and the second menu changes to either
£10,000 0r £4.50 for the wages section.
I can make the second menu change dynamically after the first
menu is defined, but the ID given to the second menu (by me) means
that it only ever searches the Hourly field or the Annual field but
not both. Let me explain...
I have a Jobs table and a salary table. Two fields in the
Jobs table are HOUR and ANNUAL and these are inserted using a menu
list drawn from a salary table. Its very easy to insert the data
into the Jobs table - click on the HOURLY menu, select the figure
and insert it into the HOUR field and then complete the process by
inserting the relevant figure into the ANNUAL field. The problem
lies in a customer search on the Public side,
I want the visitor to choose either HOUR or ANNUAL when
searching. I can do this using a dynamic dropdown menu (an MX
Extension) THE FIRST MENU is selected and then the second menu
changes to either the Annual or Hourly figures. BUT!!! I can only
give one ID to the second menu which is.....
S_jobHourly or S_jobAnnually
So it works to a degree - if I make the second menu's ID
value S_jobHourly it will return all the hourly figures chosen by
the user. But if the user clicks ANNUALLY then it returns nothing
because there are no hourly rates = £10,000.
Is there a way to perhaps join these two fields in a
recordset and then give that join a new name? So I could say name
the result S_jobSum and that means that the second dropdown menu
(given the value S_jobSum) would search both £10,000 and
£4.50 and then return the Job which matches?
Hope this is clear.
I'm really close on this and any help on this would be
absolutely fantastic.

I'm wondering if it would be easier to dynamically change the
Label Value of the second drop down menu.... is that possible?
i.e "If first menu content = "Hourly Wage" then second label
id = S_JobHourly but if content is pulled from "Annual Wage" then
label iD = S_jobAnnually. A dynamic id label for the second
dropdown menu would solve this perfectly.

Acrobat X having issues particularly in regard to creating a new form from an imported file.

So here's the dealio. I'm trying to update an online for. I've made them in the past with no issues. Now I need to add a few liability lines. Anyway, So as per the video, I try to create a form from the updated pdf which was created through Word. I can't make any headway. Also as per the video you can see that Acrobat won't close from the dialogue box, only from the menu bar. Not sure what's up with my software.

Dragging folder of photos does not create new roll

The help system says if I drag an entire folder into the photo viewing area, iPhoto 4 creates a new roll. But when I try it, it just sorts them all into by date year folders -- often incorrectly.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for the tip on viewing rolls, but with the dates not sorting properly, it's really kind of messing me up.
Each separate import creates a new film roll. If you select multiple folders and drag into iPhoto, you will get a roll for each folder. If those folders contain subfolders, they may confuse iPhoto. It's best to do this with folders that do not have subfolders.
Also, what I really need is to drop a whole folder in and have that be accepted as a roll by itself, i.e., no further date sorting.
That IS what happens. You can check this for yourself. Immediately after importing a folder, select the "Last Roll" smart album. (If your version has this, it is near the top of the Source Pane just below Library.) Be sure that you have Film Rolls selected for your View, and you'll see the roll and its title. The title should be the same as the name of the folder you imported. Select the roll (click it's title header) and look at the date of the Film Roll. Note that there are 3 dates there: "date" just below title, and "from" and "to" dates below "time." The from and to should give the date of the earliest and latest photo in that roll. To edit those dates, you must select each of those photos and edit the photo date.
What you should check is that first "date". It is the date which represents the entire Film Roll. You can edit it there in the Info Pane. That date is independent of the photo dates. It can be handy to change it, because Film Rolls will display in your library in chronological order based on this date. It can also be confusing if this date is wrong, because a roll you expect to find at the top or bottom of your list may be filed somewhere else. Correct the roll date, and you correct that problem. As I said before, this date could be causing your photos to be filed into the wrong Year Smart Albums, even if the dates on the individual photos are correct.

You cannot.
Camera Roll is temporary storage for pis taken with iphone. They should be imported regularly to your computer as with any digital camera. From there you can sort them however you like and sync them to the iphone.
