Create a new writable folder and change permissions

This is for a customer job; I fix PCs and MACs (mostly PCs) for a living.
(1) How do I create a new writable folder on a BRAND new external HD under OS X (assume 10.5 or 10.6). Note I will first reformat the external usb HD to Apple OS extended using Disk Utility. I will then do Cntrl-I (Apple Key-I) and select reset permissions checkbox at the bottom of the Info window.
ie. I know how to create a writable folder and and rename it under Windows Explorer BUT NOT under OS X Finder.
Please provide step by step instructions. I apologize for asking such a trivial question but I need it for a job in two hours.
(2) After I copy the user home directories from another MAC HD (the other HD is connected via Target Disk to a MAC laptop as well as having the new external HD being connected) someone in another thread on a forum said to do "chmod 777 -R /Volumes/Copied_Folder" to make the resulting copied folders accessible to anyone.
chmod 777 -R /Volumes/Copied_Folder sounds like a DOS command under Windows OS which is entered by creating a DOS window on the Windows Desktop and entering the command in the DOS window.
HOW DO I DO THIS UNDER OS X 10.5 OR 10.6 ?
(3) I do not know what /Volumes means in the command above. Please provide a real life example. i,e Again under Windows we have (for external HDs) F: or G: etc. What are Volumes called under OS X ?
I have connected usb sticks/flash drives to a MAC and copied in needed files but never paid any attention to what the OS X FInder called them. i.e this question (3) is about SYNTAX. I do not know OS X Finder Syntax for Volumes
Again, I apologize for asking such trivial questions.
Regards,
   Mike

BDAqua,
I want all security OFF and all access for everyone on external HD.
At jobsite box at bottom of CMD-I properties on entire external HD was ALREADY checked as Ignore OWNERSHIP (not permissions) on drive. Permissions were logged-in-admin account R/W and all other R which is fine as others only need read access going forward.  HD was already MAC formatted as I told customer to get a MAC external HD at Best Buy.
Thanks for your reply.

  • How to Create a New Admin Account and Change Original to Standard Account?

I have a single user admin account that I set up when I got my PowerBook. Now I want to have two accounts with the new one being the admin account. This way I can leave most of the data files, email accounts, etc. with the old account and use the new one for personal data and admininistration. Then I could give out the password for the original account without fear that a user could change permissions and get access to the new account with the personal data. Can I create a new admin account and then change the original account to "Standard" instead of "admin"? What problems will this create?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    i2:
Not sure if you are asking if or how. Templeton has
    answered if. Here's how.
Apple Menu > System Prefs > Accounts. Click on the +
under User Options to create new account. Go to
Security and check box at bottom to make account
admin. You can take care of the other items, picture
    etc, login options etc.
To make the other account Standard select the
account, go to Security and deselect box "Allow User
    to Administer".
    Hope this answers your questions.
    Good luck.

Thanks, I'm tying to find out if I will run into problems, such as not being able to use the new admin account to change permissions in the old.

  • Create a New Bookmark Folder and it Crashes Safari AND OSX !

This has happened to me many time and is extremely frustrating. When I create a new bookmark folder I will get a pinwheel and then all my applications applications lock up and I have to reboot the computer to regain control. I can move the mouse around, but even force quitting safari does not fix unlock the OS, even as extremely difficult it is to make it do that.
This used to happen to me on my old 2007 macbook and I was frustrated with it and its slow speed so I upgraded to a new $2000 iMac i5 and have only had it for a few weeks and it is happening on this new computer as well !!
The Safari version is 5.0.2 (6533.18.5)
What is going on here? This is not acceptable!

    HI,
If Safari is crashing, post a crash report so we can try and help.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

If you migrated files from the MacBook to the iMac, that could be part of the problem.

Third party unsupported Safari add-ons can cause performance issues with Safari. If you had any installed on the MacBook and copied files over, you may have brought the same problem over to the iMac. Post a crash report ...

  • New User Account and Changing Permissions?

Yesterday I opened a new user account for each of my kids. I moved and/or imported all their stuff to their respective accounts and all seems fine. Except for one folder... The most important one (of course ;o). It has a big red circle saying "..you don't have access".
This work was done while he was still using my account. So I have since brought it back to my desktop and all is fine. Am I correct in assuming I need to change permissions on this before he can access his folder on his account? If so.. I've never done this before. Can somebody please be good enough to walk me through this? I can not lose this file. There are no copies anywhere else. Please help!

There are no copies anywhere else.
This would be good time to make one, before you do anything else!
I have since brought it back to my desktop and all is fine. Am I correct in assuming I need to change permissions on this before he can access his folder on his account?
Rather than trying to change any permissions, my suggestion would be:
    1) Log into your own account and move the folder from your Desktop to your Public folder.
    2) Log into your son's new account, navigate to the Public folder back on your account
    HD>Users>yourname>Public
and drag the folder from there onto the current (your son's) Desktop.
This will COPY the folder into the new account rather than move it, and in doing so will correct all the permissions automatically. If the folder is very large, make sure you have enough free disk space for this copy. You can later delete the original from your own Public folder if you wish.

  • Can i share existing albums of photos from my photo library with friends straight to icloud rather than having to create a new shared folder and then select the individual photos rather than a whole album??

    Ok to clarify -
    1. i want to go into my photos on my iphone 6.
    2. create a new folder in shared folders.
    3. Add an entire album of photos from my photo library rather than having to select individual photos.
    4. Share with friends.
Surely the reason i have saved certain photos into albums already from my mac means i like the selection already. So i would like to just share the whole album rather than having to select all the individual photos from the album. Ive tried but maybe im being a doofus and missing something??????
Any help would be most appreciated.
    thank you in advance
    Kris

This is normal and is how Apple handles photos.
    There are NOT duplicate photos.
Just as a song is in your itunes library and you can access that exact same song from a playlist,  all  photos synced to iphone are in the photo library and those exact same photos (NOT duplicates) can be accessed from the individual albums.
It is working exactly as it should.

  • How can i create a new email address and change it to my Apple ID?

I set-up a me.com address but mispelled my name.  How can I crate another email address and update my icloud

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Just log out of the current account and create a new account and merge your data when prompted. You might be better exporting your data from calendars and contacts to your desktop before you start so you have a back up.

  • HT1449 After moving music and movies from my MacBook Air to an external hard drive, do I create a new iTunes music and media folder on my computer then add more music and movies, then will I be able to move the computer music/media to the hard drive musci

I need to move the music and movies from my MacBook Air (original) to an external hard drive, after I do this, do I create a new music folder and media folder on my computer to load music/movies in via the dedicatd external drive and then would I be able to move the newly imported to the external drive which would be my main site of storage?

No, do it all in one go and henceforth only use the library located on the external drive.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I created a new home folder on an external but didn't move my old files over. Now I can't see the old hard drive in my mac mini. How can I locate that drive?

I wanted to move my home folder to an external drive. I created a new home folder and in advanced options I moved it over. I didn't however move my files over first, my bad. Now I can't see the hard drive on my mac mini. Is it possible to reverse it or get access to the old home folder and is it possible to still use the mac mini's internal hard drive for storage? How do I find my shared folder, it was on the internal drive. I'm new to macs as you might have guessed at this debockle. Can anyone help?

I'm using Mavricks. I wanted to move my home directory to an external and went into sys prop/users/advanced options and moved the folder ok. Being a noobie on Macs I didn't copy my data and such. So my settings were all new. Basicly now I don't see the internal drive on my mini. There is a lot of strage I'm not able to access. The internal drive doesn't show up. How can I put a folder back onto it so it shows up?

  • When I create a new bookmark folder, the name of an existing folder is frequently changed to the anme of the new one, why?

Frequently when I create a new bookmark folder the name of an already existing unrelated folder is also changed to the same name as the new one being created. Sometimes if I am creating the new folder in "Bookmarks Menu" the existing folder who's name is changed is also in the "Bookmarks Menu". But sometimes it will be in the "Bookmarks Toolbar".
This is quite frustrating since the purpose of naming them is to identify them.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • My iTunes is accessed with an old email address. I have just created a new apple ID and now want to change my iTunes account to reference this- how do I do it?

Arghh!! I am literally about to throw my new iPad out of a window - apple is driving me beyond crazy. I have an old iTunes account to which all my music is saved. I have just created a new apple id and want that to be the one that my iTunes account references - it won't let me change my old email to this as it says my new apple I'd is sychd to another account. How do I do it? Am desperate!

Delete them and then download them from the desired Apple ID. This may require repurchasing paid applications.

    Good day BenithaK,
Once you have changed your Apple ID, you need to set it up for use in the various systems such as iTunes, the App Store, etc so it can be used as intended. This article shows how to do that -
Apple ID: What to do after you change your Apple ID - Apple Support
To change your iTunes billing information for either Apple ID account, follow the directions in this article -

  • HT204081 I recently updated i tunes and had previously relocated my library to an external hard drive, on restart I realized that itunes did not update the new location on the external but created a new itunes folder on my regular hard drive. how do I com

I need to know how to fix this. I updated itunes and it created a new itunes folder on my hard drive after I ported all of it to an external for space concerns. It took all my files from that folder and recreated part of it to my hard drive. Now when backing up I have no idea where it is backing up to. Any help appreciated

Sort of. My media was on multiple hard drives, some local, and actually some networked, and then I conolidated it to a single external hard drive. Renaming drives and moving files sounds like a recipe for disaster.
When doing a consolidation, files are copied to a new location and the old ones are left untouched. Does iTunes create a backup database of the file locations before doing a consolidation? I could use the backup if that were the case, since everything still exists in the original locations.
I've recieved my replacement hard drive for the one that crashed and I may be able to copy everything back manually if I knew where it went. I looked inside the iTunes Music Library.xml to see if I could figure out the folder structure, but for some reason they all say they're located in the iTunes folder in My Documents. They're not, of course.
Would the Previous iTunes Library.itl be of any use, or is that for another purpose?

  • Create a new Mail Folder in Outlook 2011 and control its location?

    Hello,
I want to create a new mail folder in Outlook in a location of my choosing (from dialogue box)
After selecting the location, the user would get a dialog box that asks for the users initials (i.e CY)
A second dialog box would ask for the name of the new folder.
Clicking "ok" would create a new folder in outlook that looks like this:
       20131107-TECH-CY-MyFolderName
A new dialog box then prompts for a location on the Mac where a similarly named folder should be created.
Clicking "OK" uses the finder to create this folder.
    Many thanks for any help!

Does anyone know how to summon a dialog box in Outlook 2011 for Mac using Applescript??

  • How do I create a new user account and migrate my data to it?

I have problem with Adobe Bridge crashing when I exit Camera Raw.  I was advised by my local apple service store to create a new user account and test Bridge using the new account.  It works fine.  So what do I do now?  I don't know what in my account is causing the conflict but assume that the solution might be e newly setup user.

Checking the behaviour in another user account is a TEST, not a solution! You don't need to move everything over. Otherwise, every time you get a user account problem, you'll keep moving to a new user account again and again.
If the problem does not occur in a new user account, then the cause is something IN your user account. This is usually a Preference file. Adobe Bridge seems to crash a lot, and it can usually be fixed by deleting the Bridge folder in <user>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
You can also try deleting the Bridge preference file, which will be in <user>/Library/Preferences, and called com.adobe.bridge5.plist (or similar).
If that doesn't work, you can test removing a whole bunch of the various Adobe files in those folders. You can always put them back if they don't change anything. And you've got a backup, haven't you? ;-)

This should help you out after  you have created the new user account. You are trying to make it much more complex than it needs to be. Just follow the directions in:
Transferring files from one User Account to another.
