Create a virtual drive

How to create a virtual drive from a disk image

Alias can never be mount, but the virtual drive I want to create must be able to mount and unmount.
Desktop having both original and virtual drive.
My system is booted from 'Snow leopard' and I've an another drive, name 'Disk Testing' so by using a software I create the virtual drivre of 'Disk Testing' as you can see in the image. Both the drives are identical to each other and both are able to mount and unmount, they are having same data and attributes.
So I want to create exactly this kind of virtual drive by using any apple script or command.i.e without using any software.

I don't think it would be too hard with Servlets. Here is a sample upload Servlet:

downloading from a servlet is easy by just creating a link.

  • Best practice for configuring virtual drive on UCS

    Hi,
I have two C210 M2 Server with LSI 6G MegaRAID 9261-8i Card with 10 hard drives of each 135GB. When I tried the automatic selection for the RAID configuration, the system has created one virtual drive with RAID 6. My concern is what the best practice to configure virtual drive? Is it RAID 1 and RAID5 or all in one drive with RAID6? Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Since you are planning to have UC apps on the server, Voice applications have specified their recommendations here.
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Tested_Reference_Configurations_%28TRC%29
I believe your C210 server specs could be matching TRC #1,  where you need to have
RAID 1  - First two HDDs for VMware
RAID 5  - Remaining 8 HDDs as datastore for virtual machines ( CUCM and CUC )

  • Virtual PC - Create new virtual machine snap in button not appearing

I was asked to move this question here so here it goes...
I have installed virtual PC and have the XP mode image working on Win 7 64 bit on a Dell Optiplex 990 i5.  However when I choose the Windows Virtual PC manager and the Windows explorer window opens, I don't see the create virtual machine option, just
'burn' where it should be.  How do I get the snap in option to appear to create a virtual drive?  The window appears with the title Virtual Machines.
I have tried enabling the windows 7 aero UI thinking the classic windows appearance was somehow blocking this but that had no effect.
I tried re-installing the virtual pc setup directly from the website but it give me the message that it's isn't suitable for use.  I tried un-installed and re-installing but get the same where the explorer window is missing the snap in.
Again, the XP mode image works properly and starts and shuts down without any issues.

Below is the fix for the virtual machines folder for WinVPC when the folder
here “%username%virtual machines” is missing the
    “Create Virtual Machine” option.
Making changes to the Registry is potentially dangerous, always have a backup before proceeding.

  • OK to use fdisk/100% "SOLARIS System" partition for RAID6 Virtual Drive?

Solaris newb, here - I am configuring an x4270 with 16 135 GB drives. Basic approach is
D0, D1: RAID 1 (Boot volume, Solaris, Oracle Software)
D2-D13: RAID 6 (Oracle dB files)
    D14, D15: global spares
After configuring the RAID's w/WebBIOS Utility, I am now trying to format/partition the RAID 6 Virtual Drive, which shows up as 1.327 TB 'Optimal' in the MegaRAID Storage Manager. After hunting around the ether for advice on how to do this, I came across http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/821-1459/disksxadd-50.html#disksxadd-54639
"Creating a Solaris fdisk Partition That Spans the Entire Drive"
which is painfully simple: after 'format', just do an 'fdisk' and accept the default 100% "SOLARIS System" partition. After doing this, partition>print and prtvtoc show this:

    Thanks,
    Barry

First off, RAID-5 or RAID-6 is fine for database performance unless you have some REALLY strict and REALLY astronomical performance requirements. Requirements that someone with lots of money is willing to pay to meet.
You're running a single small x86 box with only onboard storage.
So no, you're not operating in that type of environment.
Here's what I'd do, based upon a whole lot of experience with Solaris 10 and not so much with Solaris 11, and also assuming this box is going to be around for a good long time as an Oracle DB server:
    1. Don't use SVM for your boot drives. Use the onboard RAID controller to make TWO 2-disk RAID-1 mirrors. Use these for TWO ZFS root pools. Why two? Because if you use live upgrade to patch the OS, you want to create a new boot environment in a separate ZFS pool. If you use live upgrade to create new boot environments in the same ZFS pool, you wind up with a ZFS clone/snapshot hell. If you use two separate root pools, each new boot environment is a pool-to-pool actual copy that gets patched, so there are no ZFS snapshot/clone dependencies between the boot environments. Those snapshot/clone dependencies can cause a lot of problems with full disk drives if you wind up with a string of boot environments, and at best they can be a complete pain in the buttocks to clean up - assuming live upgrade doesn't mess up the clones/snapshots so badly you CAN'T clean them up (yeah, it has been known to do just that...). You do your first install with a ZFS rpool, then create rpool2 on the other mirror. Each time you do an lucreate to create a new boot environment from the current boot environment, create the new boot environment in the rpool that ISN'T the one the current boot environment is located in. That makes for ZERO ZFS dependencies between boot environments (at least in Solaris 10. Although with separate rpools, I don't see how that could change....), and there's no software written that can screw up a dependency that doesn't exist.
    2. Create a third RAID-1 mirror either with the onboard RAID controller or ZFS, Use those two drives for home directories. You do NOT want home directories located on an rpool within a live upgrade boot environment. If you put home directories inside a live upgrade boot environment, 1) that can be a LOT of data that gets copied, 2) if you have to revert back to an old boot environment because the latest OS patches broke something, you'll also revert every user's home directory back.
    3. That leaves you 10 drives for a RAID-6 array for DB data. 8 data and two parity. Perfect. I'd use the onboard RAID controller if it supports RAID-6, otherwise I'd use ZFS and not bother with SVM.
This also assumes you'd be pretty prompt in replacing any failed disks as there are no global spares. If there would be significant time before you'd even know you had a failed disk (days or weeks), let alone getting them replaced, I'd rethink that. In that case, if there were space I'd probably put home directories in the 10-disk RAID-6 drive, using ZFS to limit how big that ZFS file system could get. Then use the two drives freed up for spares.
But if you're prompt in recognizing failed drives and getting them replaced, you probably don't need to do that. Although you might want to just for peace of mind if you do have the space in the RAID-6 pool.
And yes, using four total disks for two OS root ZFS pools seems like overkill. But you'll be happy when four years from now you've had no problems doing OS upgrades when necessary, with minimal downtime needed for patching, and with the ability to revert to a previous OS patch level with a simple "luactivate BENAME; init 6" command.
If you have two or more of these machines set up like that in a cluster with Oracle data on shared storage you could then do OS patching and upgrades with zero database downtime. Use lucreate to make new boot envs on each cluster member, update each new boot env, then do rolling "luactivate BENAME; init 6" reboots on each server, moving on to the next server after the previous one is back and fully operational after its reboot to a new boot environment.

  • How can i specify username/password while creating a virtual directory

    Hi,
i m trying to create a virtual directory in 9iAS on a mapped drive. How can i specify which username password to use to enable to connect to the network mapped drive. Is there any way where we can specify username / password ???
    thanks
    Unmesh

    9iAS R1
Run the report service as a local account with administrator rights.
On the target server, create a local account with the same user name and password.
Now you can use the hidden shares ($) for example:
    &destype=file&desname=\\servername\d$\report_output\report.pdf
    9iAS R2 and 10g
Pretty much the same thing except by default, the report server runs inline. I have not been able to get the entire service to run as a particular user. To get around this, I created a report server service and do not run the reports in process. It uses the separate service.
    rwserver -install rep90_name
    edit <ORACLE_HOME>\reports\conf\rwservlet.properties file.
    SERVER_IN_PROCESS=NO
    SERVER=rep90_name
Edit service for rep90_name and change it to run as local administrator user you created on both servers and then start the service.

  • Cant open Virtual drive if LOCAL INTERACTION is enabled (App-V 4.6)

    hello
There is some strange i have observed. If the LOCAL INTERACTION is False then i can access the files from the Virtual Drive configured (using the sfttray comands), however for the same shortcut if i enable the LOCAL INTERACTION i can access the files, clicking
on the Virtual Drive gives error "Access denied".
Is this something known/ any way to tackle this?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I actually never tried that, but what _could_ happen with Local_Interaction_Allowed is that you create a COM object conflict: This settings 'exposes' virtualized COM objects to the local system.
There was an blog post talking about that at
http://softwaredeployment.wordpress.com/2011/04/04/enable_local_interaction-clarification-and-busted-myths/, however this one moved to another location (and can't be found there, either).
I tried to open the above page from Google Cache (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:dwt9uQV20j4J:softwaredeployment.wordpress.com/2011/04/04/enable_local_interaction-clarification-and-busted-myths/+&cd=4&hl=de&ct=clnk,
but my current proxy block that.

  • No renaming on virtual drives?

I'm on a PC with Vista x64,and as I still use XP on a dual boot,I have created a virtual P drive that replicates all my photos from the actual F drive (which is D drive under XP,that's why). It happens that when I try to rename photos on the catalog (catalog and photos are all physically in the same local drive)it fails saying that the photos are missing or are not writble...
    Any ideas why?

XP is proably locking out access to your photos and catalog.
    Would cause share violations

  • Using Rufus to create bootable USB Drives for Cisco ISE 3495 upgrade

I will give a try in the lab but I just wanted to know if somebody else tried this option before.

Firstable I have to said that I received a brand new 3495 Cisco ISE with version 1.3.0.876 already installed on it BUT my deployment is running 1.2.1.198 patch 3 so I had to downgrade that box.
Hi Saurav, using Rufus did NOT work. I got an installation error so I found that using DAEMON TOOL Lite (trial version), I created a virtual DVD drive on my Win 7 Laptop which pointed to the ISO for version 1.2.1.198. Then I could make the downgrade with no issues. This is a Cisco Appliance not VM.
I think the procedure indicated by cisco in the following link is INCOMPLETE:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/ise/1-2/installation_guide/ise_ig.pdf
I will post some additional screenshots required on that link when you are using CIMC and upgrading/downgrading the ISE using External/Virtual DVD.
Important to say that I found this mechanism using Virtual DVD the easiest one instead of the bootable flash drive.

  • "virtual drive" on mac?

I have a RAID and XSAN 1.2, and I want to create a "virtual volume" similar to using the MOUNT command in Windows, where a volume (aka "drive letter" in Windows) actually points to a folder within a real volume.
I've been looking into Symbolic Links and /etc/fstab.
But it's all new to me and I don't want to mess things up, esp with XSAN and all.
Can anyone explain how I might use one of these methods to make a folder within one of the volumes on the RAID appear on the desktop/finder as an actual volume?
I was thinking to create a symbolic link within the /volumes folder which points to the "destination" folder. Let's say one of the RAID volumes is called "Media", which has a folder called "A" at the root, and a folder called "B" within "A" ... can I create a symbolic link in /volumes like this:
    cd /Volumes
    ln -s /Volumes/Media/A/B/ VolumeB
I would hope this would make the Finder "see" a new volume called "VolumeB", which would actually reside within "Media". But is this dangerous?
Or is there a way to do it in the fstab file?
I would like my virtual volume to appear on the desktop/finder, specifically to be visible to Avid as another usable volume. And I want this volume to only appear on the machine where I set it up; that is, I don't want it to appear to any other machines connected to the RAID.
I am completely new to Unix/terminal, so any guidance is greatly appreciated. (Assume I'm an idiot!)
    thanks!

I have found a solution, but I am hoping there's a more elegant way to do it.
I installed SharePoints on each machine; then set up a unique share on each machine, with SMB access, so that each machine had a share to its own private folder on the RAID; then enabled Windows Sharing. Then I mount the so-called remote share through the same machine, by doing Connect to SMB://thismachine. The "share" appears as a network volume, even though the machine is sharing "with itself."
As far as I know, SharePoints is just a GUI front-end to simplify doing certain things that can be done with more expert knowledge of OSX/Unix. So is there a way to do this without SharePoints?
And is there a way to do it without "faking" as a share through SMB? I just wonder if that will reduce performance/bandwidth from the RAID.
I suspect there is a way to get that "network volume" to appear without going through "loops." To somehow get that mountpoint (?) to bind directly...
The AUTOMOUNT command looked promising, but my Unix isn't good enough to make sense of the jargon in the manual.
A friend said on Linux you use something with "--bind", but that doesn't work on OSX-flavor Unix.
P.S. to Don: Yes, to all your questions. You got it. And yes, the file in X appears in the corresponding directory. X is just a volume that points to a folder within an actual volume, where that folder is the "root" of X.

  • Trying to use Parallels to create a virtual PC running Windows 7

I am trying to help a friend with this problem but I am woefully inadequate to assist on this one!  Here is a brief description of what's going on – by the way I am using a MacBook Pro, Lion OS X.  I use Parallels to create a virtual PC running Windows 7.  I have installed Office 2010 on the PC side and Office 2011 on the Mac.  All VBA works fine on the PC side, but bombs on the Mac.  It was my understanding (directly from Apple) that with the release of Office 2011 for the Mac that all code was now conforming with the PC version.  This is probably true for new code written under Office 2010 (PC), however, most all of my applications have been developed over time through many versions of Windows based software (probably the last 10 years)…to date I have never had an issue with compatibility (on the Windows side).  I have done some online research into the errors that I receive, however I am really an novice/intermediate programmer and am unable to find adequate solutions to the initial problems (as shown below).
Once I receive the run-time error 1004 I use the debug feature, etc. and end with "Can't find project or library.  The initial error is probably just the beginning, but I am unable to go forward from this point.
Any help would be much appreciated…thanks.

Well your topic is about virtual machines and the body of your post is about Visual Basic. So what exactly do you want help with.
One has nothing to do with the other.
As to the error you posted that VBA program you are trying to run is looking for files in a specific place. Which would not be the same on a Mac as it is on a PC. For one reason PCs use Drive Letters for that path to folders. Mac's use Volume names.
Although I don't do a lot, if any, VBA programing you might be able to run those VBA Apps through the Mac side VBA to convert them to work on Office for Mac. You would also need to copy over whatever it is looking for that gives you that error.

  • Tired of Bootcamp.  Is there any "virtual drive software" Mac compatible?

I have been using bootcamp for my MS Windows needs (Quicken and AutoRoute only) and have become tired of the necessity of rebooting for every instance of need.  I have heard that some mac users have found a software that establishes a virtual drive (on which to install Windows), as a file in the Mac OS.  Does anyone know of such animals and if they're certified by Apple?
    Thanks
    wjw

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.
