Create Buttons in Photoshop?

What I'm trying to do is create a Menu for DVDSP 4.0.3 where the buttons are completely hidden until highlighted. In other words you only see one button at a time and I want the first button highlighted when the menu opens. This is not a motion menu. It's a simple .jpg photo. I have a background layer and I want to put four buttons that are custom made and all exactly the same (a persons head) Then I want the button(head) to get bigger when selected. And if possible add a sound bite when button is selected.
If anyone would kindly point me in the right direction such as a tutorial I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You in advance for your time.

I believe the only way to get the effect you are describing is to use the "layered menu" method. The drawback to this method is that each button state is acutally a whole separate menu background. The menu appears as a single object in DVDSP, but each button state is a separate background mpeg asset. This makes the navigation rather sluggish, as the player has to move the laser and re-buffer the background each time a new button is selected. There is also a pause in the audio during this transition.
I generally avoid this type of menu, just because I prefer smoother navigation, but I have seen layered menus used well in certain cases. You just have to prepare your assets well.

  • Creating Buttons from Photoshop Layers

Hi, I am actually a designer trying to supply someone with a DVD menu template. They are using DVD Studio Pro.
I've sent the files as layered Photoshop .PSD files with the proper aspect ratio & size. The text that needs to be made into menu buttons I had converted to rasterized layers (as the type was originally layed out in a sepearate program, not Photoshop).
    - So you cannot convert type that has rasterized on it's own layer to a button?
    - Can 'Vector Smart Object' layers from Photosop CS2 be imported and used as buttons?
    - Can Shape Layers be used to make buttons?
    - If I absolutely have to redo all the type in Photoshop, anyone know how to properly handle the aspect ratio issue? The document is using DV (.9) aspect ratio, and the type does not appear correct when laying out in Photoshop. I have to apply a 90% horizontal scaling to make the type look the same as the rasterized type I brought in.
Thanks. I'm not too familiar with DVD authoring and even the whole pixel aspect ratio. Just trying to get the best files to people.

If they're using DVDSP 4 or above, YOU do not need to used the 0.9 aspect ratio when you make the file. Just use regular square pixels, but make sure that you're file is 640 x 480 NOT 720 x 480 (for 4:3 menus) or 720 x 404 (for 16:9 menus).
Any layer with filters should be flattened. All text and shapes should be rasterized as well.
    - So you cannot convert type that has rasterized on it's own layer to a button?
It can very easily be it's own button, and outline for a button just needs to be "drawn" around it. It sounds like your DVD person doesn't quite know what they're doing.
    - Can 'Vector Smart Object' layers from Photoshop CS2 be imported and used as buttons?
Yes, but make sure all vectors/shapes/test are rasterized and/or flattened to there own layer.
    - Can Shape Layers be used to make buttons?
    Yes. (See above.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Creating custom buttons in Photoshop

Alright, I've been searching the forum and web all day and done some tutorials but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for or can't make it work so I'm throwing out a life line.
I would like to create a custom button in Photoshop that I can use in DVDSP 4. I've built a psd file at 300x300 pixels@ 72ppi in a 16bit file. I created the 4 layers and arranged them from top to bottom Icon, Hightlight, Shape, and Mask.
Imported into DVD studio pro as a custom shape, dragged it into the menu and said make button. Went to the color tab in the inspector clicked simple and change the normal selected and active states but it changes it for the whole button shape not just the shape of the psd file. HELP!!

  • How to create buttons for each slide in slideshow

I currently have a slideshow working with prev and next buttons,
but would like to add numbered buttons for each slide at bottom of images,
with a static number for the active slide that has a colored circle around that number.
I can create static number with colored circle in Photoshop and add that to a layer,
but it's labor intensive to do that for all numbers.
Is there a better way to create the highlighted numbers for active slide?
For numbered buttons that link to non-active slides, I can create numbers in Photoshop and import images into Flash,
then convert to symbols and assign actions for them,
But that too is labor intensive to do for all the numbers.
Is there a better way to create numbered buttons for non-active slides?
I'd also like to have a hover function on the numbered buttons,
that changes from plain image of number to number with colored circle like I want to use for active slide.
How do I assign a hover function to button symbol, that will load another image or symbol?

Try to think in terms of having reusable symbols.  Think it thru before you try it.
Use a movieclip symbol instead of a button.  Have a dynamic textfield in that movieclip for the number, and set the textfield to not be selectable.  Have one frame of this movieclip where it displays as the highlighted (selected) one and have the movieclip go there where you are on that slide.
Use the textfield for the number--assign it dynamically so that you don't have to import an image for it.  Use as many of these movieclips as you need to for all your buttons.
Have functions that reset all the buttons at once so that when you move to a new slide, the previously selected one goes back to mormal... follow that with setting the newly selected one to be in its "selected" frame.

  • Interactive button in Photoshop

Hi. Using Photoshop CS6 on a MacBook Pro.
I know you can design a button in Photoshop, but can you create one that is also interactive? Say if you wanted to do an animation in Photoshop and you wanted a button to go to the next part of the animation?
Should I be importing the gif into After Effects and add the button there? Not sure how it works.
    Thanks.

Thanks Mike. We're trying to eliminate Flash, otherwise I would use it!
You can do it in PowerPoint and not Photoshop? Uh oh..

  • Creating Buttons and Audio issues in DVDSP3

Ok, here is what I want to do:
I just want to create a simple DVD of my commercial reel. When the DVD is put in I want music to play. Then, I want to create a button in Photoshop and use it to play my commercials.
    My issues:
I can't get the music to play and have a custom button on the same menu. I can't get the "highlight" portion of the button to work with the PSD file I created for the button.
It seems like it would be so simple. What I am I doing wrong?

Hi - welcome to the discussions.
From what you have written I'd say you are using a photoshop layer based menu and if so, you won't be able to use audio on it... they don't support it.
You'll be better off creating a standard overlay style menu instead, which will support the audio.
Alternatively, create a track and use a piece of slug as the video (or a still image) and place the audio in that track. Set that to be the start up item for the disc and then get the end jump to go to a menu with buttons to play the commercials.
Kind of depends on how you want to display this item, I guess...

  • Making buttons in photoshop

There is a way to create custom buttons in Photoshop that exibit the 3 states that a button has:
    1. Not Selected
    2. Selected
    3. Activated
I believe that 3 layers need to be created, one for each state??? If so Just How do you Specify Which layer is which?????
When I was doing the PC thing (using Adobe Encore) all that was needed was to Name the layers with a special name, however, that does not work in DVDSP (at least not the naming convention)
I believe that I am within one foot of a 10000 mile journey, I just need the Meat and I will be there.
    Thanks

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hal,
So far, I have been able to create a button by creating a photoshop file with the word "Test". I then created a blank button in DVDSP by dragging the mouse in a shape I wanted. I then drug the fie from the finder onto the blank button and selected "Set Asset".
Using the colors tab in the inspector I found out that the 4th "Key" for color set 1 controls the Background highlight, the other 3 "Keys" control nothing (for This button)
I want to have lines and objects "Light up" when selected, not just the background.
I believe that there is a relationship to the "Keys" and what they control. So far , "Key" 4 (the bottom one) controls the background. Are objects in layers 1 through 3 controled by "Keys" 1 through 3??
If so I need a little help on how to create a line or something in a specific layer.
    Thanks
    Mike
PS I can drag psd files into DVDSP menus and buttons, but if you right click in the buttons area and select "Import" , it does not want photoshop files.

  • Buttons in Photoshop

I am trying to create my own buttons in Photoshop, but whenever I save it as a .PSD file and import it into DVDSP the hightlighting option does not work with it, by that I mean it will now show any indications when the button is highlighted or selected. I have all of the color settings right in the inspector and other buttons work fine, but for some reason when I create one it will not show indication that it is highlightes or activated. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong? Do any of you all make your own buttons in Photoshop?

I had the same problem last night.
I'm working on a fix for it too.
I've picked up the DVDSP4 Apple Pro Training book and am going to do the lesson that covers that this afternoon.
I'll report back with my findings.

  • Creating stills in photoshop cs2 for 16:9 HDTV

    Hi,
I've been reading posts regarding creating stills and still need some clarification. I'm from a print world, so dealing with square pixels vs. non square, hdv, vs dv widescreen is all a bit confusing....
I've been to this link: http://www.fcpbook.com/Photoshop1.html and several others, plus reading the manuals which all have been helpful, but each instance deals with different specs, not necessarily what I've listed below.
First, I am creating the stills for 16:9 viewing on a hidef tv (1080). The FCE HD project is an animated, narrated story with overlays, keyframe motion and some limited effects.
    Here are my questions:
    1. In creating my original photoshop template: should I use pshop's presets under "new document":
HDV, 1920 x 1080 (with guides) and if yes, what should the aspect ratio be set at? Square or HDV anamorphic? (When I do "HDV anamorphic" I get a squashed look in FCE, with "square" it looks good.)
    2. Saving the photoshop file to be imported into FCE, would it be better to save as a jpg, or photoshop or other format? I've been reading differing opinions as to which...
    3. Once I create this template (above) can I crop down the still if it doesn't fill the entire photoshop template (I will have some overlays that will not require a full frame in FCE).
    4. some images will be enlarged in FCE. Instead of enlarging them in FCE, should I be enlarging them in photoshop? should I be enlarging exponentially, ie doubling the size of my original photoshop template? And if I'm enlarging them less than 150% in FCE, would the image lose it's sharpness at that enlargement?
    5. And finally, I've already created some of the stills in photoshop using the photoshop presets for HDV 1920 x 1080, pixel aspect: square and brought them into FCE. Is WYSWYG in the FCE's canvas window what I'll be seeing on my TV monitor (16:9 1080 HDTV). The images are not squashed and look great, but I'm not sure if that's what I'll end up with when I finally view on my tv.
    Thanks for any help!

    1. If you're working in FCE in a 1920x1080 sequence then that's what you should make in Photoshop, square pixels not HDV.
    2. Save as Photoshop, TIFF, or PNG, not JPEG.
    3. Yes.
    4. Enlarge in Photoshop if they have to be enlarged. You should never double the size of an image. It will quickly start to deteriorate, especially when it's re-compressed. You'll have to live with it not being full size. You should never enlarge an image more than 115%. It will start to soften and make encoding more difficult.
    5. No. The Canvas is a lo res representation of the final output. For professional work most editors use an external video monitor to view their material. This can't be done unfortunately in FCE with HD material.

  • For loop and xml - how to point the right content in a XML file with a dynamically created button?

    Hi Everybody,
as my first experience in AS3 I'm bulding a photo multigallery. In that gallery I have some buttons, each one pointing to its respective set of images.
Each button is created with the for loop, that picks the information from a XML file. From this XML I get the text of the button, the position etc. What I did with some sucess. But there is a scary problem: I don't know how to make each button load the respective and unique set of images.
I've tryied several different methods, with no effect, to make each loop to give to each button an unique identity to load the respective set of images.
I imagine that the solution pass by the use of arrays. I wrote some code, and I guess that I'm almost there (but not sure). Here is my AS3 code until now:
    // CREATE MENU CONTAINER //
    var menuContainer:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
    menuContainer.x=10;
    menuContainer.y=300;
