Create cascading standby

Hi all,
Any one have experience with creating a cascading logical standby?
Currently we have a primary and a physical standby databases. We want create another logical standby which will be receiving archive logs from the existing standby to reduce the overhead on production.
My question is , can I use the backup of primary database to build the standby, or I have to copy the datafiles from the existing standby to the new one?

  • Create Multilevel Standby database

    HI All,
    We have a 10.2.0.2 primary database with a physical standby database.
    We would like to create 2 more physical standby databases for the same primary but, we dont want to have the logs shipping from primary database as it is prod.
    Is there any way where we could ship the logs from 1st standby to 2nd to 3rd standby.
    To me more precise we want to create multilevel standby databases primary--->stby1---->stby2---->stby3.

    What you describe is referred to as "cascading standby databases"
    Let me point you to this thread where I already answered a similar question:
    cascade dataguard
    Bottom line: You don' need cascading standby - there is as good as no measurable performance impact on the primary with multiple standby databases compared to only one standby.
    The only valid reason (it was not performance) for cascading standbys vanished with 11gR2

    Creating another standby is same as how you create first standby database i.e RMAN duplicate/RMAN restore/HOT backup/Cold backup method , Here only configuration changes to configure redo transport and other parameters.
    Here you can use either backup of primary or standby, it doesnt make any difference.

    The previous thread was abt one of the issue which I faced and I thought of uodating all about the reason why it happened. This thread was created so that I can gather more info abt cascading standby db, thought both of them are absolutely diff topics to discuss on,hence 2 diff threadsThat's Ok, Ajinkya. My point was, you're facing problem while performing log switch, people were co-operating you and you suddenly concluded that thread without achieving any result. Your thread may be beneficial for others.
    My protection mode is maximium performance. ***************************************************************************************
    Maximum Performance
    This protection mode provides the highest level of data protection that is possible without affecting the performance of a primary database. This is accomplished by allowing transactions to commit as soon as all redo data generated by those transactions has been written to the online log. Redo data is also written to one or more standby databases, but this is done asynchronously with respect to transaction commitment, so primary database performance is unaffected by delays in writing redo data to the standby database(s).
    This protection mode offers slightly less data protection than maximum availability mode and has minimal impact on primary database performance.

    N.B.: the above statement is assuming that you're using standby redo logs. If not using SRL then local archiving will happen first and then that archive will be transferred to standby database. Please observe the functioning in the following diagram carefully.

    Now ,the database following the diagram while transferring the redo data, will slow down the whole system not only the database. Here is the problem, you need to investigate at this point. Are you using any anti-virus which performs blockwise check while write/read? This may result in slow performance. Can you afford disabling your anti-virus for some time and check? :) .
    And the general idea of going for cascaded standby was that my primary faces performance issue due to the network latency between the production and DR servers. So instead of my primary hampers till the archives are sent to the remote db, y cant I send those archives to a standby db on LAN, and from there I can send it to the remote server. Example:
    A -- My primary
    B -- My standby on LAN
    C -- My standby on remote destiantion.
    So now instead of A sending archives to C, it would send archives first to B which in turn will send it to C. In this way my dependency of A on C reduces which in result doesnt hamper my performance of A. and then B in turn would send the archives to C.

    We are planning to create a cross platform standby database.
    our source db is on IBM AIX and standby will be on HP-UX.
    oracle db version: 11.2.0.1
    Is it possible to create a standby when primary and secondary will be on different host.

    Yes .. you can't do that.
    For each architecture Oralce build their own binaries. (i.e Processor Power has is different binaries from Processor Intel)
    For some architectures, Oracle succeeded in creating compatibility between some different architectures, the Table on note 413484.1 describe it.
    Oracle has certified to use AIX (Power) with Solaris (SPARC), but because of bug (12702521) Oracle reported it's no longer certified.
    In your case (AIX) there is no compatibility with others plataform. AIX binaries is compatible only with itself. (e.g Processor Power 4 with Processor Power 7)
    If you still think about creating a DR environment, using a different platform (In your case AIX) you must search about use the Oracle Golden Gate or Oracle Streams.

    Legal ADDRESS parameter formats may be found in the Oracle operating system specific documentation for your platform.

  • Problem creating physical Standby database with RMAN

    I am trying to learn oracle dataguard and as part of the process learning creating standby database.
    Platform : Sun-Fire-V250 Sparc, Solaris 10
    Database Version - Oracle 11R2
    I am creating standby database on same server, so directory structure is different.
    Following the instructions on Oracle site I managed to create a functional physical standby database. But I am not able to create standby database using RMAN. These are the steps that I followed-
    1.Set up all necessary parameters on primary database as done while creating physical standby database manually, eg setting force logging, creating standby logs etc.

    RMAN finishes without error but archive logs are not being tranported. Looking at the log, following caught my eye-
    Error 1017 received logging on to the standby
    Check that the primary and standby are using a password file
    and remote_login_passwordfile is set to SHARED or EXCLUSIVE,
    and that the SYS password is same in the password files.
    returning error ORA-16191

    So on both primary and standby I confirmed
    SQL> show parameter remote_login_passwordfile
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    remote_login_passwordfile string EXCLUSIVE
    To make double sure that password files are same, I shutdown both databases, delete password files and recreated with same credentials.
    Password files are called - orapworcl11020 and orapwstdby_11
    Can someone guide me where thisngs are going wrong here please.

    SELECT * FROM V$ARCHIVE_GAP;
    returns no rows so there is no gap.
    But could you please explain me the result of the previous query. To catch up again, on standby when I check

    I have intentionally given
    sequence# BETWEEN 74 and 80
    because I know in the current incarnaion of the database, max sequence is 78.
    So my understanding is, the rows between 28-29 June are from previous incarnation, correct me if I am wrong
    Archive files of the current incarnation, since I successfully created standby database are shipped but yet to be applied - am I right?
    Then my final question is, when will these archives be applied to standby database?
    I am sorry to ask too many questions but I am just trying to understand how it all works.

  • Creating a Standby Database with the Same Directory Structure

    Hello gurus,
    I am self-learning the feature Oracle Data Guard, so I am testing it on Oracle 10g R2.
    At Oracle documentation there is a section F.4.: Creating a Standby Database with the Same Directory Structure*, that explains how to create a standby database with RMAN but there is something that I don´t understand:
    In the standby server, I created a database with the SID equal to production database* with the objetive to have the same directory structure, but when I try to startup nomount the standby database with pfile appear this expected error:
    ORA-16187: LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG contains duplicate, conflicting or invalid attributes
    So my question is: Is possible have the Same Directory Structure on both: Production and StandBy server?

    I have a doubt: How can you have the same directory structure if you have differents SIDs?, for example if you follow the OFA suggestions you would must have:
    On Production server: */u01/app/oracle/oradata/PRIMARY/system.dbf*
    On StandBy server: */u01/app/oracle/oradata/STANDBY/system.dbf*
    Or you created the directory structure manually on StandBy server? For example replacing the string STANDBY* to PRIMARY* before create the database using dbca.
    Do you understand my doubt? Excuse me for my english.

  • Differences in creating a Standby database in RAC

    Hi All
       SO...: Solaris 11 SPARC 64
       DB...: 11.2.0.3.6 (64 bits)
       My experience regarding creating Physical Standby Databases is restricted in only single instances to single instances. I am reading the book "Oracle Database 11g Release 2 High Availability", but, in parallel, i would like to hear from the experienced DBAs here some opinions and recomendations in how to implement a RAC to RAC solution. Below are my doubts:
       1) In single instance, using RMAN Backup to create the Physical Standby, i have to create manually a static Listener Entry. But in a RAC env, the listener is a resource, so, i have to create that resource in the Clusterware manually, or there is other approach?
       2) I have to create a pfile and start the instance in NOMOUNT mode, but in RAC, i have to start all the nodes in NOMOUNT, or just one node is sufficient?
       3) The archives will be replicated from FRA to FRA. Is this the best approach?
       My main concern is with the Listener and SCAN questions... If you have any considerations, they will be most welcome.

    Backup Primary ( change to your directory as need )

    backup format '/u01/backups/PRIMARY/df_t%t_s%s_p%p' database;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    backup format '/u01/backups/PRIMARY/al_t%t_s%s_p%p' archivelog all;
    backup current controlfile for standby format '/u01/backups/PRIMARY/sb_t%t_s%s_p%p';
    release channel d1;
    }Move the backup and duplicate like this :
    rman target sys/password@PRIMARY auxiliary /
    RMAN> run {
    allocate channel C1 device type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel C2 device type disk;
