Create database on RAC environment - DBCA hangs on clone database creation
Hi, friends!
I have two vm´s (vmware 2) with OEL 5 installed.
I´ve installed OGI and database software sucessfully. So, my crs stack is working fine in both two nodes.
However, when i use DBCA to create a database in this RAC environment, it hangs when it gets on "clone database creation", about 52% of the progress bar.
My DBCA logs don´t point any error out. It just hangs on..
I wait about 4 hours and it doesn´t move on.
I searched and found many cases like that, including here in OTN. But it seems nobody could find a resolution to this issue.
Is there any bug about OEL 5 and database 11gR2??
More details:
I apllied the patch "p8670579_112010_LINUX" on both OGI installation (before root.sh) and databae software install (also before root.sh).

-SatishGenerally you should have same CPU architecture and same operating system but it's not mandatory to have the exactly the same CPU model, the same number of CPU, the same RAM size etc.
Actually starting with 11.1 you don't need to have the same hardware setup: it 's even possible to have primary and standby database on different platforms: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053. -
Manually Setting up a Standby Database for RAC Environment

I am a Junior DBA so apologies if this sounds like a silly question.
We have production 11g Extended RAC environment setup. Management have asked for a separate single instance database be setup as a standby DB on a separate 'cold' server in case we lose complete connection to both sides of the RAC. I read up on Oracle Data Guard and presented this as a solution, but they seem adamant about manually going in and copying out the latest backup and archive logs over to the standby database.
Can this be done? I mean, can ASM managed backup files and archive logs from one database be simply copied out of the backup directory and imported into a completely separate database as easy as that?
We are using ASM to manage to data files on the RAC. My understanding is that we cant manually access the files on an OS level when using ASM, but maybe I am wrong. Any help or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated.

what is the DB version.
from 11g you have cp command so there is a possibility to copy generated archive logs to standby location, so that you can apply..
In 10g there is no such option. you need to create a standby database. with automatic shipping

Oracle 9i installation hanging in "Clone Database Creation in Process"
Hi all,
I have been struggling in installing the 9i in my laptop.
Here is my setup,
OS: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 in VMWare
Database: Oracle 9i 9.2.0.1.0
When it automatically comes to "Database Configuration Assistant", there are 4 steps.
Copying Database files
Initializing Database
Creating and starting Oracle Instance
Completing database creation
The 1st 3 steps has been completed and the installation just hangs at the last step when the completion rate is 88%.
Anyone got problem like this ?
Here are the details I have so far for the DBCA during installation process,
Listener Control complete.
Listener start failed. Listener may already be running.
Listener configuration complete.
Default local naming configuration complete.
Oracle Net Services configuration successful. The exit code is 0
Since I am completely new to installing DB, please help me to get rid of this frustration.

Install hangs in "Clone Database Creation"
I try to install Oracle 11g on my computer. The installation pass all the checks and completes installing the files, then go to "Oracle Database COnfiguration Assistant".
In the "Database Configuration Assistant" dialog, it displays the progress bar to 46% and said "clone database creation in progress", and then the whole progress hangs for 8 hours without any changes. So I think the installer is dead.
I shutdown the installer and computer. Then restart. Then stop all the Oracle services, then call the deinstall to deinstall everything, remove all the registry entries and installed files.
I then restart computer and reinstall Oracle, but the installation hangs on the same progress again. I repeat this for several times. But always cannot complete the installation.
I think maybe there are some problems in cloning the database, so I check the log file, which is appended in this article. One problem is that the creating time of the log is about 8 am, but when I wait to 16 pm, the progress is still hangs and the creating/updating time of the log file is still 8 am, means Oracle does not update for about 8 hours.

you are entitled to your opinion, regardless of how misguided it may be.
You don't have to convince me, about your reality.
If you want Oracle to install correctly, you need to make sure that NO errors get thrown.
Only you can fix what is wrong on your system. -

HI, I have a question regarding using the flash back database feature nwhen in a rac environemt...I see in the documentation that when flashing back the database that you will need to us the open database with the resetlogs option in order to flashback. So does the open database resetlogs need to be done for each instance in order to get the instance database open?

I have 11g standard edition database installed without RAC in a server environment. But, now I have needed to keep this database in RAC. Could I install or upgrade database with RAC environment without re-installation of oracle software/database from the scratch?

JE data is stored via Database objects. When you using the DPL, your EntityStore opens and closes the Databases for you. If you don't call EntityStore.close, it won't close the Databases and you'll get this "warning exception" when you close the Environment. Note that if you open/construct an EntityStore more than once, you'll have to close each instance.
If you only see this message occasionally, I suspect that you're getting an exception during your app processing, before you close your store. The exception causes you to skip your normal shutdown code, that closes the store, so the store is not closed. You're probably not catching this exception and logging it, and it is not thrown upward because of the exception thrown by Environment.close. To find out what's happening, you'll need to catch and log the exception.

The SDP (Infiniband) Listener is for client connections connecting to the database on Exadata over the SDP protocol on the Infiniband network. You should use the Infiniband network to connect the ZFS to Exadata and mount the ZFS shares to the Exadata compute nodes using DNFS; but this doesn't use the SDP listener because there is no database connection originating from the ZFS you are just backing up your databases to it. See the "Oracle ZFS Storage: FAQ: Exadata RMAN Backup with The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance (Doc ID 1354980.1)" MOS note for good information and references regarding backing up from Exadata to ZFS.
Plus how do I know we have exalogic? I dont think we have one, but is there a way to check to be sure?
Exalogic is another of Oracle's engineered systems. It contains integrated compute, network and storage - similar to Exadata - but is used for running application environments, specifically for fusion middleware (e.g. Weblogic) applications, instead of databases. It uses a ZFS storage appliance for the storage, as opposed to the storage cells on Exadata, and for virtualized environments uses the Exalogic Elastic Cloud software. You would know if you have one.
So basically after oracle engineer installed onecommand and created sample database, as oracle dba, we can dbca to create a database just like regular RAC environment? There is nothing specific on exadata perspective?
Yes... Oracle on Exadata is still the same RDBMS - same Oracle Enterprise edition with the RAC option. The Exadata difference comes with the hardware integration and the storage cell software... the database software is the same.
Another question is do I have to configure exadata specific parameters in order for all those features of smart scan, storage index, comrpession, etc work?
Some Exadata features are mostly "black box" and work without any configuration others may take some configuration or tuning to take advantage of. For example, storage indexes are created dynamically on the storage cells... there is not much you can do to control them. For smart scans you need full table/index scans with direct path reads. So you need to tune for direct path reads. HCC requires setting up your tables/partitions to compress at one of the HCC compression levels and using direct path loads. -
Are multiple PHYSICAL databases supported in one Oracle 10g RAC environment

as of Metalink 220970.1 Oracle RAC is also supporting different databases in one cluster installation. RAC handles any resource as a service and it doesn't matter if these services belongs to only one or to different databases. You install the Oracle Clusterware only once and you create any service you want to make high available.
So is technically possible to install multiple databases on same Oracle Rac environment.
My doubts are related to SAP , does SAP certify such environments ?? we could have one SAP R/3 database and SAP BW database co-exist in a single Oracle RAC environment. or also co-exist SAP database with a non-SAP database (an already existing application) in the same Oracle Rac environment.
Any comment would be higly appreciated.
Silvio BrandaniWe have ECC, BI, PI and Portal running on same Oracle RAC environment. We have one RAC for QA systems and one for PRD systems. We are not running any SAP applications along with Non-SAP applications on RAC. Keeping SAP and non-SAP apps separate would be a way to go.

DBCA hangs with 'database not open'
I've installed the Oracle 9i ver.2 Enterprise Edition software on a Tru64 Unix machine with 512MB of memory. The software was installed without any problems. However, while creating any database thru the Database Configuration Assistant it hangs on 46% on "Creating & starting Oracle instance" with errors of 'ORA-01109: database not open' in cloneDBCreation.log and 'ORA-1109 signalled during: ALTER DATABASE CLOSE NORMAL...' in alert_SID.log.
I have also tried to create a DB via a script file but this hangs up in the 'CREATE DATABASE' command.

About the Script - It asks for the path for creating DIR and uses shell command to create DIR. Later same path and DIR name is used to create Oracle DIR. Now in place of absolute path raw device name is passed. The same script is also used for creating tablespaces and schema.
There is second script that is .sql script that creates external table in the newly created schema. All this has been working fine on single instance Oracle server. we have tested many times but fails in RAC environment when we use raw device.
Question is - If I use filesystem will the external table's flat files and Directories be accessible to all the instances.
I have one application written in java that would be clustered and running on these oracle servers. This application would be accessing those external tables and their flat files. Will there be a problem accessing these flat files accross the instances.
