Create freeze frame

Trying to complete a two phase ken burn's effect using a still photo: i.e., (1) from detail A, zoom out to full frame; (2) from full frame zoom in on detail B. The problem is that ken burn's doesn't allow quite a full frame at 16:9 ratio (even though the camera recorded the picture at 16:9), but rather something slightly cropped. Ordinarily, in an older version of iMovie for example, you would simply make a still frame identical to the last frame in the first phase of the ken burn's effect and proceed with phase two. In FCP however, 'hold' is greyed out and we are unable to apply it on a still photo, i.e. unable to freeze an already 'still' frame. 'Hold' is available on a movie clip on the same timeline but not on the still photo. Anyone with an idea for a workaround?
I have tried re-photographing the slightly resized full frame in phase 1 (after applying the ken burn's effect). I tried both Grab and Preview. Preview works best but a slight glitch is still observable across the cut. Ideally this transition should look seamless, which it is not (with a slight glitch, giving the sense of a bumpy ride). By the way is there a keyboard shortcut for 'take screen shot' in Preview? At the minute, I can only access it by the File menu.
Working on a 27 in iMac with fully updated FCP
Any suggestions greatly appreciated,
Christopher

Place the skimmer over the farme you want to play with and share that as an image (Save Current Frame) .
You can then bring that image in and key frame it or ken burns it till your hearts content

  • Easy way to create freeze-frame in CS4

I've tried following the help instructions in PPro CS4 to make a 10" freeze-frame of the last frame in a sequence, but it seems rather complicated and to be honest I haven't got it to work for me. Avid has a dedicated command for this function which is very easy to use.
I only was able to get it to work by exporting a still of the last frame and then reimporting it into my project.
Is there an easier way of doing this please?
    Chris

There is Frame Hold, and the Help File has pretty good coverage of the ins-and-outs.
Personally, for most of my Freeze Frames, I use your workflow, and just Export/Import.
Note: things changed with CS4, and got complicated, until about the CS4.2 update. I think that the updates are up to CS4.3. If you have not updated to at least CS4.2, I would do that.
While I am not a fan of a "big button" solution, I think that having such for Export Still Frame, and then automatically (via a toggle ON, or OFF) Importing into the Project would be a good one. In earlier versions of PrPro, things were easier. I use the Export/Import Still more for creating Menu animations for use in Encore, rather than traditional Freeze Frames, but feel that things could be much easier, than they are, even with the updates.
    Good luck,

  • Freeze Frame Exports Muddy

I like to freeze a frame and use it as the menu background on wedding videos. Here's how I create it:
    Select frame,
    Create freeze frame,
    Export frame as still picture/jpeg,
    De-interlace in Photoshop
Yet when the picture goes into DVD Studio Pro it's somewhat muddy and far from crystal clear, and even worse looking on a large screen tv.
Is there a better way to get a sharper still exported?

    ::Select frame,
    ::Create freeze frame,
    ::Export frame as still picture/jpeg,
    ::De-interlace in Photoshop
This won't help with a muddy image, but you can leave one step out from your workflow - skip the "Create freeze frame" step and go straight to File->Export->Using QuickTime Conversion then choose the file type and format you want.
The Create Freeze Frame step (Shift n) is for when the still image is just for use within FCP.

  • Strange audio on freeze frames that won't go away?

So i create freeze frames, then when i play the 4-sec frame it makes a strange noise like a tape rewinding and this noise doesn't go away if i record a voiceover.
I can't mute it either because according to my macbook there is no noise.
And the sound jumps, so 4 seconds of audio is taken out from the following clip and the audio for the all the clips is moved by 4 seconds.
Any help would be so welcome, thanks.

Oh and i got a photo from iPhoto, added it to the end of the project library and miraculously the noise had gone, i then added a voice over.
But then when i moved it to a different place (inbetween 2 clips) the noise came back.

  • How do I create a freeze frame from footage and extend that for 5 seconds?

I have a quicktime screen grab movie I've imported, and I want to hold on a certain frame that's at the very beginning of the clip, and then proceed with the movie when the voiceover (separate soundtrack) gets to a certain point.
    iMovie 11.
    Thanks

    Hi Doug,
Position the playhead/skimmer (vertical red line) at the very beginning of the clip. The playhead should snap to the first frame, provided you have this turned on in the menu item View > Snap to Ends.
Without moving the playhead, right-click (or Control-click) and select Add Freeze Frame from the pop-up menu. The default duration is 4 seconds (although this setting can be changed for individual projects in File > Project Properties). To adjust the duration in the timeline, double-click on the freeze frame to open the Inspector. In the Clip tab you can change the duration by typing in a new time.

  • Java.lang.RuntimeException: Error while creating embedded frame

    hello,
i know about http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10273756, but this doens't helped.
    i got a
java.lang.RuntimeException: Error while creating embedded frame
    at sun.plugin.viewer.WNetscapePluginObject.createFrame(Unknown Source)
    at sun.plugin.viewer.WNetscapePluginObject.setWindow(Unknown Source)
when starting a complex Java Applet in Firefox (2 + 3). Then the bowser freezes.
Internet Explorer freezes too, but doesn't left anything in the console.
Simple applets like http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml works fine, but i doesn't know the special thing on my applet that keeps it from running.
The best thing about it is ... this happens only on some computers, on most systems the applet works as aspected.
i have no idea, where i should start to search to solve this problem, does anybody have one?
Systems that doesn't work : Win XP; Java Plugin 1.6.0_06
Systems that work : Win XP; all Java Plugins

I solved this problem by correcting a typo in the HTML source:
I had a error within the DIV tag containing the applet. In this case a TD tag within this DIV contained some bad characters. Such problems could be avoided by using a HTML validator.

  • Trouble with making a freeze frame?

    Hello All,
I need some help with something I'm trying to do.  I have a short clip in my timeline that I have color corrected and added some filters to.  Then I move the playhead around until I find a still picture that I like and then I go to Modify>Make Freeze Frame and then I move the still from the viewer over to the section that hold all the files.  The trouble is that when I make the freeze frame FCE is giving the version before I did color correction or adding the filters.  How do I get to make a freeze frame that has been color corrected?  It's showing me the raw version before I've done anything to it.
    Thanks for your help.
    MIke

When the freeze frame is created in FCE, it is only from the master clip (with no filters applied).  Simply drag the filters that you applied to the clip to the new freeze frame.  The filters will be applied with the settings you made.

  • Freeze Frame not working

I'm using iMovie 10.0.3. When I try to do a freeze frame of a clip, it just creates a black clip.

Did you place the playhead on the frame of the clip you wanted as a freeze frame and option F on the keyboard or freeze frame in the modify menu? If that gives you a black frame it could be a media problem or an iMovie problem. What's the parameters of the clip? You can open the clip in Quicktime and look in the Inspector window to see the properties.

  • Connect freeze frame in FCPX 10.0.8 - wrong part of clip freezes - not where playhead is parked

After successfully creating multiple freeze frames from the Event browser, I have run into a situation where I am constantly getting a freeze-frame that is not relevant to where the play head is parked. I keep getting the same non-relavant spot no matter what I do.

You would probably get more help by posting int he FCPX forum, you can easily locate it at:

  • How to edit a freeze frame in Photoshop?

When making a freeze frame, the file that FCE creates is videofile AVI or MOV, the same as the source clip is. If I would like to edit the image in photoshop, it should be converted to still image?
Is there any way to do that in FCE?

    OK. Thanks!
Eventhough I use Quick Time almost daily to export and compress movies, I´ve never before noticed that pop up menu.
I´ve been only wondering where all those formats disappeared from the main dialog box where all the other setting are done.
So I got two answers at the same time.

  • Freeze-frame in iDVD

I'm creating a slide-show in iDVD. 2 questions: 1) Can I freeze-frame one of the slides so an extended audio track can play behind the still image? And 2)Can I designate different transitions within the slide show, i.e., the 1st slide "twirl", the next 20 "dissolve", the last slide "fade"?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can do both of these things if you create your slideshow in iPhoto. You will be able to set the duration of each photo so that one can play as long as needed. Also, transitions, can be varied as well. In iPhoto, while working on the slideshow, click on "Adjust"; this will open a window in which you can individualize the duration and transition for each photo. When you have things the way you want, export the slideshow to iDVD for completion of the project.
    I hope this helps.

  • Freeze frame in the middle of a clip?

For an instructional DVD, I need to be able to freeze a frame in the middle of a clip, without the sound (as I'll put up some text messages).
I've ended up making copies of the clip, and using the hold condition, and trying to line them all up by hand, but this doesn't seem like an ideal way to do this.
Also, is there an easy way to turn off the sound for the 'hold' part of the end of a clip? Would be nice if there were a boolean I'd overlooked, but I guess I'll have to open my "Spencer's" Motion 4 book, and try to remember how audio keyframing works?

As mentioned by others, it's best to perform this effect in FCP. Bring your Motion project back into FCP and place the playhead where you want to freeze the frame. Press shift/n to create a still image in the Viewer. Blade the clip at the playhead and perform an insert edit to add the freeze frame. Cutting out the audio in FCP is easy as well and there's several ways to go about it. I would simply blade the audio at the freezing point and drag the remainder of the audio to snap to the point where the motion starts up again, depending on the type of audio effect you are looking for.
Although there aren't any behaviors in Motion that affect audio in that fashion (except for Audio fade in/out behavior) you can still edit the audio somewhat in Motion. Just go to the Audio Editor Tab and adjust the levels there or press ⌘6 to reveal the Audio Tab then right click the audio file to duplicate the audio file, set an out point for the first audio clip in the Audio Editor Tab where you want it to freeze, note the frame, and on the duplicated audio file set the in point at the same frame that was set for the first audio clips out point, then place the duplicated audio clip were you'd like the audio to resume.

  • How do I make a freeze frame.

I can't find an option to create a freeze frame? Any pointers?

If you're wondering how to take a screenshot of the program, you can hit the little camera icon. If I misunderstood though the question though please let me know so I can attempt to answer more accurately.

  • Freeze Frames in HDV to SD

Just created a SD DVD. The Project was edited in FCP, in Native HDV (I know should have converted to ProRes!). Exported to Quicktime (Current Settings). Took Quicktime and ran through Compressor. Took Mpeg and used DVDSP to create .img. Then used Toast to create SD DVD. After all this, I am looking at the final project (DVD) and while the moving footage looks good, I am noticing that the freeze frames are jagged and "move" (almost like an interlace vs progressive issue). Anyone know I I can fix this in the future? Thanks

Thanks John. That's an interesting post, but I'm already processing in Compressor for scaling and letterbox from the original HDV material with great results. What I really want to do is be able to output directly from the SD timeline with HDV clips scaled and letterboxed, avoiding the trip to Compressor. I think it's an issue with scaling in FCP that is not up to par with Compressor. It seems to me that Apple's claims about mixing resolutions may be a bit over stated at this time. At that is the result I'm getting.
