Create Hyperlinks on Export to PDF

I've never done any InDesign scripting, but I have a problem that the out-of-the-box app doesn't address. Basically I have a lot of product names in my InDesign document, and I'd like them all to be unique hyperlinks to corresponding product pages on a Website. I'm thinking there must be a way to script it so that when I export to a PDF, InDesign check will check against an XML file with the product names and corresponding URLs and create the appropriate hyperlinks. Is that not how scripting works? Is what I'm suggesting impossible for some reason or do you think it would be possible to write a script like that? Does such a script (or something similar) already exist? Thank you.

Hi,
sure this could be done by script.
But without sample indd.doc and xml-file nearly impossible.
You should hire someone to code this if you haven't the approach to start coding yourself and get additional help here.
Great evening

  • Hyperlinks not exporting to pdf.

We have a report that has hyperlinks to different pages in the report. I did this by formatting text as a hyperlink and using a formula to generate the link in the format #page=5 when this was exported to pdf, the links worked perfectly and linked back to the appropriate page in the same pdf. This was done in Crystal 9. Now we have upgraded to Crystal 11 and it does not work anymore. I can look at the contents of the pdf and it does not appear that any links are exporting to pdf. Is this feature broken in CR11? Does anyone know when this will be fixed?

    previdn,
Pages to my knowledge does not retain the multimedia elements when exporting pdfs. The manual is not illuminating on the subject. I thought it might be possible that the media element is a reference and requires the external file to be present, usually in the same location, in the same folder both when you create it and try to play it back.
However I just did some experiments in Pages, Preview and Acrobat, including the propinquity and making the file, media and .pdf carry the same name. The media just is not referenced from the exported .pdf document. What you are seeing is the "poster" frame of the QT movie, in your case the black rectangle.
Media files are normally added to a .pdf in Acrobat Pro, after they are created, where you can add much more control over how they are viewed and launched.
Until Apple fixes this, your only choice is to do this in KeyNote which has excellent media exporting.
You could try Numbers as well on the off chance Apple implemented this function there.

  • Relative Hyperlinks when Exporting to PDF

I am working on a number of InDesign pages that hyperlink out to various other supporting files, which I've saved all within the same folder as the PDF exports of the InDesign files.
When I use the Path button to browse to the file I want to target, it inserts an "absolute" link to that file. Since this whole folder of inter-connected documents must be portable, I want to use "relative" linking syntax. I tried just typing in the "filename.doc" and file://filename.doc but, with no success.
Thanks for any clues on this.
    -Tony

I create InDesign files all the time that require relative links.  InDesign hyperlinking does not support that directly.
I use a third party program called "Filezilla" (free from downloads.com) to upload the supporting documents and then to copy the relative links.  At least this way (copy/paste) I can ensure I have the correct path out to the link.
I then paste the link into the proper hyperlink dialogue box.
    PDF, and away we go.

  • TOC does not include hyperlinks in export to PDF

I created an eBooklet in Pages, but when I export it to PDF, the TOC does not include hyperlinks to the pages. There aren't any signs of the TOC including links in the original Pages document, either.

The iWork '09 DVD can be had at Amazon. You will need to apply the Apple IWork 9.3 updater to bring the applications to their last revision, and compatibility with Mavericks and Yosemite. The help menu in Pages ’09 v4.3 has a link to the that specific PDF user guide. The Number '09 guide is there too. The Keynote  '09 PDF User Guide is here.
Pages v5 documents are not directly backwards compatible with Pages '09. You will need to export the content as Pages '09. Since Pages v5.5.1 is lacking nearly 100+ features that were in Pages '09, you must take care with opening Pages '09 documents in Pages v5. It will filter out content that it does not support (e.g. linked text boxes).
Any double-click on a Pages document with both applications installed, will default to opening in Pages v5.5.1. Deliberate effort is required to open Pages '09 documents, either by the Pages '09 file chooser, or a two-finger tap (on your Air) to bring up the secondary menu that has Open with > Pages (4.3) on it.

  • Create hyperlinks in a flat pdf

For reasons i have created a flat pdf (around150 pages).
I create buttons and links in Acrobat Pro XI.
I run the "create links from urls" function, but only few hyperlinks are recognized.
It seems that not even if they starts with www. they are recognized.
Do I rally have to go through the document searching for urls?
    BR Nina Storm

If you select the URL text with the mouse and copy it to another application, does it look correct?
I believe the links detection algorithm requires http:// at the start to correctly identify a URL, though.
But a script can be used to detect URLs that do not have this prefix, and then place a link on top of them.

  • Create Hyperlinks In Exported HTML Slideshow?

I've created a presentation with Keynote 3 and would like words and objects to link to external web sites.
The links work when the presentation is viewed using Keynote. But when I export to HTML the links don't work.
Am I doing something wrong? Or is this feature not available?

Hmmmm, YOU have fired up the thought bits of my mind
I suppose you COULD use iWeb and build it manually. One slide per page with forward and next buttons and use objects with no fill and no stroke (with a 1% shadow) to be hyperlinks. I think that might work nicely!

  • Hyperlinks do not work when exporting to PDF (Crystal and Visual Cut)

I have a question about Crystal Reports XI Release 2 and Visual Cut 11. I create reports in Crystal and export them using Visual Cut. Some reports contain hyperlinks to files on a network drive. However, the links only work while in Crystal. The PDF files that are printed through Visual Cut display the links, but they are not clickable. How can this issue be fixed?
In case it helps, the links also work when I export reports from Crystal to HTML, Word, and Excel, but not when I export to Acrobat. I believe it is a problem with tagging/accessibilityfeatures. So is there a setting/formula in Crystal or Visual Cut that would allow the exported PDF files to be accessible?

While Crystal exports to pdf indeed lose hyperlink functionality (both in Crystal as well as in Visual CUT), Visual CUT allows you to use Crystal formulas (acting as hidden Tags) to create hyperlinks in the resulting pdf file. Another option supported by Visual CUT it to automatically detect file references in the pdf text and turn them into hyperlinks.  Contact MilletSoftware for more detail.

  • Export to .PDF, hyperlinks issue

    Hello,
I've been working with Crystal Reports 2008, and so far it all seems to be going well. There is only one issue that I've come across, and I was hoping for some direction.
For some reason, when I export my form to .PDF, all hyperlinks are removed... I've found that I can export to RTF, then to .PDF, but this sometimes causes some formatting issues.
Is there any way for crystal reports to keep their hyperlinks when exporting to .PDF?
    - Scott

    Hi, thanks for your reply,
You know, I've never tried it just out of Crystal Reports 2008 until now. I ran the report, then in the preview tab, I clicked on the field that had the hyperlink formula in it...
Clicking it just selected the textbox. I tried the same thing in CR2008 Viewer, with no success. The odd thing is that, if I export the report to rtf, excel, word, html, etc. the hyperlinks are there. It's just not there in the viewer, or in the exported .PDF.
I'll explain how I did the hyperlink, and hopefully you can tell me whether I'm doing something wrong.
I have a field in our database with the full path to the document that I want to link to. The path is similar to
xx.x.xx.xx\subfolder\subfolder\filename.PDF. This path will work so long as the report is being viewed on a PC connected to our local network (which it is).
Then, in my query, I select the path as one of the database fields. If I just put the field into a text-box, the value is printed correctly, so my query is grabbing the correct path.
Then, on the text-field that I want, I right click, select 'Format Text...' and select the 'Hyperlink' tab. Then I set the hyperlink type to 'A file', and under hyperlink information, I select the formula button. I then bind the formula to the field with the path in it, save changes and retrun to my form.
Within CR2008, it doesn't look like there are any hyperlinks, and clicking the field just selects the text. If I export it to .rtf, excel, word, html, etc. the link is there, and it works fine. As I've said, it's just the CR2008 viewer and exported .PDF files where the hyperlink doesn't appear.
Now, on a whim, I decided to just type the path into the 'file path:' field in the hyperlink tab. Doing this manually allows the link to be clicked in CR2008, but I still can't get the exported .PDF file to recognize the hyperlink. Even if setting the static path allowed my links to be maintained in an exported .PDF, I need the Path to be set based upon the field in our database.
So, that's where I am now. If you can see something I've done wrong, or something that I haven't tried, please let me know. This is the only thing that I've come across that is causing me any trouble so far. I would appreciate any help that anyone could offer, Thanks.

  • Can't use touchscreen on my exported fillable pdf using my HP W8 tablet

I've used FormsCentral to create and then export fillable pdf - (Tablet is WIFI only and sometimes I don't have a connection - hence I can't use it online all the time so I've exported as a pdf) - anyway. Tablet is Windows 8.1 Pro, 64bit, HP EliteTab 900. My problem is that unless I have my keypad plumbed in (which works fine) - I can't get the PDF to prompt for the onscreen keypad when I click on the open text fields. I don't always have the keypad on me - not practical for tablet use. Is there a setting or option or a different reader I should be using??

    Hi;
I am going to assume by the Windows 8/8.1 Adobe Touch app you mean "Adobe Reader Touch" (the full screen Metro app as opposed to traditional desktop application).
If you do indeed mean the "Metro" version of Reader for Windows 8/8.1 devices you can post your issue in the related forum here: http://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe_reader_forums/metro
I do not know why this isn't working in the Reader Metro, or if it is a feature that has been added there yet or not...  I am inquiring to find out.  In the mean time your crew members can always use the "desktop" Adobe Reader (Free download get.adobe.com/reader/) and the Submit button using the Email method will work from there.
    Thanks,

  • How to create a hyperlink when exporting .pdf?

    Hi guys,
I've been doing quite a bit of research on how to make an object into a hyperlink when exporting my .ai as .pdf.
So far I've come across guides that show the method of using Object > Slice and the Attributes' Image Map, but none of them seem to work when I open my exported .pdf.
How do you guys create objects with links when exporting .pdf?
    Thanks in advance.

    InDesign, most probably.
Or create the PDF in Illustrator and use Acrobat (Pro) afterwards to make links.
Depends on what's inside the document.

  • Hyperlinks not working in PDf created from Keynote '08

When I produce a pdf from File > Print in Keynote '08, the hyperlinks do not work in the pdf. I have tried all the various pdf settings (even the ones that export hyperlinks) and no luck, the links are not working in the pdf. If I invoke the File > Export > PDf command in Keynote, the hyperlinks do work, but Export does not provide as much flexibility in PDF creation that File > Print does, thus my need to go to File > Print.
    Any suggestion?

If I export to pdf in Keynote, all my saved hyperlinks default to http://livepage.apple.com/ (when the pdf is subsequently opened in Adobe Reader).
Are you sure that you really entered a link when you created an Hyperlink?
The described one is the one which is used by default by every iWork's components.
We must enter the true one by ourselves.

  • How can I make hyperlinks work in InCopy when I export to PDF without using InDesign?

I created an InCopy document with hyperlinks linking to other InCopy documents. When I exported to PDF, these hyperlinks don't work. Is there any way I can make these hyperlinks work without using InDesign? Thanks.

Terrible idea. In a JPG the text will not be alive, you loose all interactivity.
And making JPGs with InDesign is not what the program is meant to make.

  • InDesign Crashes When Export to PDF - Only When Hyperlinks Checkbox is Enabled

I think I've read every single posting on the web for InDesign crashing on export, and have tried pretty much all of the solutions with no luck.
I am exporting a document (a table of contents document) in InDesign to PDF. With any of the export options on EXCEPT the hyperlinks option, it does fine. When I click on the hyperlinks option, it crashes.
I've recreated this document several times, e.g. exporting to IDML (which also causes it to crash), copying the text out and pasting it into a new document (still crashes)...the problem file is the one titled Intro_Electrical. I've tried replacing it with another document, but it still crashes. I've tried creating a new book, but it still crashes.
The link to the files is here:
    https://www.box.net/shared/stbtj81v3j
Normally this would not be a big deal, but I have an ugly feeling that several of my foundation documents are based off of this file. If at all possible, I would like to be able to correct this issue instead of having to turn off the hyperlink option.
If you can offer any advice for correcting this, I'd really appreciate it. I've been dealing with this problem since CS4 and was hoping that it was something that would be fixed with CS5, but apparently not...or it's just me, I'm not sure

The table of contents is build ussing TOC module. It's collecting content from 7 book documents. I have almost the same file build in an other language and it's working perfectly. Never had this issue before. I can not find the difference between both documents. I tried to deleting all the chapters and ad them one by one but it's crashing the moment that hyperlinks are used no mater how many chapters from other documents are added. However if the table of contents is made only from one documnet - inside of that document hyperlinks are stable and pdf can be produced not cousing any issues.
I will try to delete page by page and check if I can discover problem maker. As this is going to be soooooooo time consuming I'm waiting for any other sollution. Anyone?

  • Thick border around hyperlink in exported PDF (in some PDF viewers)

We are seeing an issue with the formatting of hyperlinks once a report is exported to PDF.
The problem is that the resulting PDF shows a thick black border around the hyperlink, but only when viewed in certain PDF viewers.  For example, the formatting looks fine in various versions of Adobe (both Reader and Acrobat), but when viewed in PDF Converter Pro (our company's new standard) we see the thick black border.
Also, GSview completely chokes and refuses to display the PDF.  Not sure if this error message is a red herring..
The problem occurs in PDF's created by the following Crystal environments:
    - Full version of Crystal 2008 designer (even though Print Preview looks okay)
    - A .NET web application built on Crystal 2008 components
    - A .NET Windows application built on Crystal 8.5 components
It seems that our PDF output file has had this problem for at least the two years that we have been generating these reports, but was not noticed until we switched to a new standard PDF viewing application ([PDF Converter Pro|http://www.nuance.com/imaging/products/pdfconverter.asp]).
Initially, I thought that Crystal was relying on our installed PDF creation tool to generate the PDF, but I understand from this thread that Crystal uses its own PDF engine:
[Version of PDF export Engine|Version of PDF export Engine]
Any advice would be appreciated.  From what I have learned so far, I think our best option might be to find a way to get users to use Adobe Reader to view the problematic PDF files.
Edited by: Shannon Wagner on Sep 23, 2009 5:16 PM - (Removed GSView output since it seemed to be messing up the format of the post.)

    Hola,
does anyone know if this bug (and yes, it is a bug), has been fixed in any later version of crystal reports ?
I am using Crystal 2008 and any object with a defined hyperlink is getting a black border written into the PDF when the settings on the control explicilty say 'None' for all 4 borders of the object. This is true when the pdf exported from CR is viewed on the latest versions of Snow Leopard (Mac OSX 10.7) on any Mac computer.
This is a posting for a mac forum circa 2009 which still applies at the the time of my posting here - http://hintsforums.macworld.com/archive/index.php/t-106893.html
The problem is that the PDF exported from CR is being generated with the following settings for the border of the affected objects:
    /Border [ 10 10 10 60 ]
if the top, left, right, bottom border in CR is set to 'None', then the reports designer should actually be outputting this:
    /Border [ 0 0 0 0 ]
if you open the PDF in TextEdit on the mac and make the above change, the borders disappear. However this is obviously not a suitable work-around for an end-user.
