Create new backup point

How do you create a new individual/independent backup in iTunes for the iPhone, so that that specific backup never gets updated again? When I click on the "Restore from backup" by right clicking on my iPhone in iTunes I have about 5 backups in there from different dates. For example, I have a backup dated Jan 14 2009 that never gets updated anymore, but I know I can revert back to that date if I need to. For the past few months, no new backups have been created, and instead I have regular iPhone backup that gets updated every day. I'm worried that if I have to restore my iPhone, and then I accidentally sync my empty iPhone, I'll have lost all my data because it will just replace the default backup. Is there a way to manually create a new backup that will then never get updated again, for archival purposes? I've tried the "Back Up" option, but that doesn't seem to create a new backup point.
Thanks in advance!

For some reason iTunes seems to overwrite the existing backup with a new one, unless (as has been noted) there is a firmware upgrade. It is possible to keep some old ones and force a new backup file....
Go to the backup location (mac is similar):
C:\Documents and Settings\<name>\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
And notice the folder names - Noticing the naming convention.... The folder without a numeric ending is current. It is possible to give it a time/date ending and then it will not get overwritten. So if you have a bunch of folders, take the one without a numeric ending, copy it and just add "-20090321-091358" to the end of the copy. To the system it is no longer the current backup, but it was made on date-time.
I have done this successfully quite a few times - I usually do it before a firmware upgrade, just to make sure.
Before you backup again, look at the backup list in iTunes and you should see an "old" backup with whatever date and time you gave it. Your next backup should be the same alpha-numeric string and no date-time.

  • Can not edit or create new power points since installing Yosemite.

I can not edit or create new power points since installing Yosemite.  I can open and run the power points I have previously created but every time I try and edit or create a new power point it simple comes up with this
Also when I open the font drop down menu all the font names are in Chinese

Have you run all the office updates? We have to assume this is a proper copy of Office 11 of course and not one 'from Hxxx-Kxxx'. I  would also consider re-installing Yosemite-something is screwy on your installation of something if its picking up China..unless of course it is true that the Chinese have been hacking into iTunes and are secretly trying to make you into an agent of the state..you will speak Mandarin..you will speak Mandarin

  • Time Machine completed a verification... must create new backup??

I just saw a notice on my headless MacMini that "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you. Click Start New Backup to create a new backup. This will remove your existing backup history. Click "Backup Later" to be reminded tomorrow.
That sounds ominously like it should have said "Time machine encountered an error, and you're going to lose all your history when I start a new backup for you, but you really have no choice other than to delay the pain for a day".
This is a relatively new 2Tb capsule, model A1409, from 9/7/11, which is backing up a Mac Mini (new as of April) and a new MacBook Pro (as of May).
Is there any way not to lose that backup history? Any way to debug what happened so I can take steps to make sure it doesn't happen again?
    Thanks!
    Steve

    Bob,
After re-reading my initial reply, please do NOT think I was saying that "you" didn't answer my question about what happened.
I was trying to imply that sunspots and cosmic rays are indeed sometimes part of our life in IT, and that I was just going to "accept it, lose my history, and go on".
I do truly appreciate help, and would have hated to have you think that was directed "at" your reply...

  • Time machine creating new backup for external hd every time it is connected.

    Hi.
I have recently gotten a Time Capsule to back up my files.
I want to back up my internal harddrive as well as an external harddrive with master images from aperture.
Theoretically time machine should skip trying to back up the external drive when it is not connected, and make a backup when it is. (I only connect the disk when working with the images)
However, the problem is that every time I connect the external hd to back it up, time machine seems to create a total new backup of the whole drive and not just the changes. It seems to not recognise that it has already backed up the disk before. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I know it is possible, since I have used this system before, but can't quite figure out how to solve the problem.
    Thanks!

If the drive is not recognised.. you should see multiple external drives in the backup.. is that in fact what is happening.
What makes you think it is doing a whole new backup??
One factor you may not have considered is that Time Machine does need to do a deep scan of the disk when it has missed more than a few days. A deep scan can take ages over wireless as it will have to actually compare the backup with the files on the disk. Determine what has changed, make up a list of files that need backup and then start and actually do the backup.. this might even take longer than a straight clean backup.
Have you checked the TM log for what it is really doing?? Pondini widget will give you that info. See A1 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I have a simple solution.. that will cost you around $40.. use Carbon Copy Cloner.. not Time Machine. It simply handles this kind of thing better.
There are a number of other solutions that you can buy.. 3rd party backup software.. you can even do it manually via rsync.. however.. a tool like CCC which is based on rsync is a heck of lot easier than writing your own backup scripts.

  • How do I create new mount point

    Hello,
I'd like to create a new mount point. The Admin guide says to click the Create button on the toolbar but I don't see anything that says Create (I have New, Edit, Upload,...).
Searching here I've seen references to some code snippets that purport to do it but I'd rather use a GUI.
    Thanks for any help

You have to use iFS Manager, not the WebUI.

  • Time machine backup files gone and can't create new backup

Last week I noticed on my Time Machine backup HD that the Backup.backupdb files were gone.  Also I am unable to complete backups any longer.  I get an error "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Time Machine-2/walle.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
This Volume "Time Machine" is connected to an Airport Extreme 7.6.1. I have ejected the disk, disconnected all users, cycled the power on my computer (2.26Ghx MacBook running 10.7.5), Airport, and HD. All it does after I eject is that it give the Volume a new number...ie instead of "Time Machine" it becomes "Time Machine-1"...then "Time Machine-2" and repeates the error message with the new name.  So I cannot start a new backup because of the above error on top of not being able to find my old files.
    Thanks for the help

Hmmm.. sorry to jump in but...
I Wish I had seen this before I got mine.
Mine has been doing this auto eject stuff too.
I think I just plugged it in and TM let me select it but is it possible
I should have reformatted it with DU first, like with all the WD drive problems ?
Is it too late for that ?
Or just try to return it or get rid of it ?
    TIA

  • Error -45 when creating new backup on a new drive

I just started to back up my iMac on a NAS network drive (that is configured for Time Machine). The first backup went OK but then on the second it wouldn't and I got a message that Time Machine wanted to delete the original backup and create a new one but every time it starts, I can an Error code -45 and that follows:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/iMac_timemachine-1/Jim Kohler’s iMac (2).sparsebundle” could not be created (error 45).
Any ideas on what is going on here??
    Thanks!!

Are you sure? TM doesn't seem to like it.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/iMac_timemachine-1/Jim Kohler’s iMac (2).sparsebundle” could not be created (error 45).
The sparse bundle is where your backups are (or should be) stored. If there's already a backup, it should not be making a new one.

  • Time machine created new backup file

After migration, time machine created a new data file in time capsule. How do i instruct it to access the original? Thanks!

I ejected the USB drive and turned it off, erased the Timemachine.plist file from the shared directory and then turned back on the USB drive. I then went into Timemachine and turned the program back on. Timemachine then started a count down sequence and then automatically started the scheduled backups. The problem is fixed.

  • After apple repair TM creates new backup set instead of recognizing past on

I took my computer in to the apple store for a repair and now it refuses to use my old time machine backups and created a completely new set that took up another 80GB on my harddrive. is there any way to get it to use my old backup, because I can't afford to have it use that much extra disk space.

thanks but that code doesn't seem to work. I get back a bunch of errors but I tried this other method I found in the discussion boards and it seemed to work. Time Machine is trying to backup right now, we'll see how that goes.
by the way, the other method I tried is here:

  • It's possible creating new markings/points ("joints") on the body?

Someone know if is possible and how to create a new point on the body?
I need for instance, put a new point between two body joints and be able to calculate the distance from one kinect body joint and the my new created custom point.
    Regards,
    Adriano.

I think you can have a look at the BodyBasics sample for this. In that sample, points in the "body space" are created from Kinect data. If you want to add other points you can draw them in a similar way but you will have to provide the position
for these points as Carmine said. For example, you can add a point in the middle point between the elbow and the shoulder but you will have to calculate its position in the code each time you want to draw it, Kinect is not going to track this point in the
    user.

  • Time Machine repeatedly "must create new backup"...

Hi there - I have a fairly specific problem:
After replacing my 1TB HD at Apple's suggestion, I was able to successfully restore my data from Time Machine backup which resides in a Synology NAS (DS210j to be precise).  So far, so good.
After about 3 days of use, I get a pop-up message from Time Machine stating that it has completed a verification of my backup and concluded that it must make a new, full backup.  This then wipes my entire history of Time Machine back-ups and then proceeds over another 3 days to complete another backup.
    So far, still reasonably good.
The problem is that after the 2nd full cycle of this (ie. full backup, verify fail, full backup required etc), the message continues to recur.
I have read through Pondini's FAQ (esp. C13) and I am still at a loss because my set-up (TM via NAS) has been stable up to this point and I had more than 1.5 years worth of Time Machine back-ups until the fateful day when I replaced my iMac hard drive.
I have tried to address as many of Pondini's suggested reasons as to why C13 might recur (including rechecking power supply etc) but am at a loss because the set up was working before and nothing has changed other than the replacement of the hard drive in the iMac...
One of the things I have tried is to check my computer name via System Prefs -> Sharing and noted that my Computer Name is the same as before the backups but "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: XXX-2 (i.e. a duplicate)". So I have now edited this to make this the same as the computer name (to remove the potentially offending -2).
I also downloaded TM Buddy and wanted to post the following the log:

  • Time machine won't backup. Says disk is full ( stand alone disk). Souldn't it delete enough to create new backup. Last backup was 7/20/11. When I click "enter time machine' it goes to mail screen and nowhere else.

Time machine won't backup. Says disk doesn't have enough room. Shouldn't it delete old info to make space for new.
When I click on "enter time machine" it takes me to the last backup 7/22/11 and doesn't allow me to go further back.

    No idea's?

I had to create a new user for myself. I want to associate the new username with time machine backups

No. Time Machine will never delete anything from your system. But it will, eventually, delete it's copies of things that no longer exist on your system.
At this point I d like to be able to use the current backups with my new username and not lose any data/backups.
That's going to be difficult, since OSX in general (and Time Machine in particular) think those two accounts are for two different people, and neither should have much access to the others' files.
Why did you have to create a new account?
Is the old account still on your Mac?
Assuming the old account is still there, your best bet may be to sign on as the old account and grant permission to your files to the new account; then sign on as the new account and copy them. But until you're sure you don't need anything from the backups, don't delete the old account, so you can use it to restore anything you need.
