Create new folder and move items script
Hello
Im new to applescript and automator.
I've been looking high and low for something and figured I should ask the pros here...
I want the ability to have a "hot folder" that when ever anything is placed in the folder, a new folder is created in the top directory of that hot folder using the modified date as the new folders name and the contents of the hot folder are moved to the correct folder.
My thought was to upload pictures to this folder (on an external drive) and have the script put them in the correct folder that was created by the script. I could use either "modified date" "created date"...
Is this common? Possible?
Any ideas how I could do this?
Thanks All!!!
a new folder is created in the top directory of that
hot folder using the modified date as the new folders
name
Is that the modified date of the files that you
dragged to the "hot folder"?
If so, that would probably require AppleScript since
Automator can't get that information from the files.
For the rest of it-as a starting point
New Folder
Rename Finder Items (Add Date and Time)
Save As Plugin- for Folder Action - attach to your
hot folder.
Note: You don't want to create the new folder in the
hot folder, doing so will likely cause it to loop
continuously.
Yes I would like to pull the "created date" or "modified date" from the files I drop in the HOT Folder and use that date as the new folders name.
So if I put 10 pictures in that Hot Folder and 5 had the same created date then those 5 would go to one newly created folder et cetera..
And no, the new folder will be either above or along side the Hot folder. Not in it.. good catch!

Create new folder with selected items
I have a bunch of movies that I would like to place into individual folders of the same name (Without the extension name). I wanted to try and create a keyboard command to do this with the selected files, but can't manage to figure out how!
What I did was try to create a new service command in automator, then went to keyboard shortcuts in system preferences to assign a keyboard command to it.
I want to make something that works like control-command-n (to create new folder from selected items), only I want the items to be in individual folders of the same name.
eg.
Files selected such as:
The incredibles.avi
Cinderella.mkv
Dogma.mp4
each moved into individual folders labeled as:
The Incredibles
Cinderella
Dogma
Also, is there a way to change the control-command-n shortcut so it can create a new folder from a single item? It only works when there is more than one file selected.
Thanks so much for any help!I am going to guess that you start off with a single file - what are you doing to generate these files? My *Get Names of Finder Items* action can get a name to use in the *New Folder* action - items passed to the New Folder action will get copied to it, so a little more detail may help in creating the workflow.
The *Dispense Items Incrementally* action can also be used to dole out the items one at a time - knowing what the workflow is doing would help with the use of this action as well. -
All my photos on my phone are in one album. Is there a way to create new albums and move some of them?
With photos transferred from your computer, you create the albums or folders on your computer.
If you manually manage photo storage on your computer, create a parent folder that will store the named folders of photos you want transferred to your iPhone. Place the named folders of photos in this parent folder and select the parent folder under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync. The folders of photos inside of the parent folder on your computer's hard drive will be transferred to your iPhone as separate albums. To add an additional album of photos to your iPhone, place the folder of photos in the parent folder followed by a sync. To remove an album of photos from your iPhone, move the folder of photos outside of the parent folder followed by a sync. -
Access Denied when Exporting, Creating new folder.
My normal workflow on some occasions is that I work on images then making a selection, I will export then to a folder on my desktop. I normally hit the Export and on the pop up I click on create new folder and export the images to the folder.
Since the new update, when I try to create a folder it gives me Access Denied. If I create the folder first, there is no problem.Hi,
I would like to suggest you run the following commands with elevated privilege.
takeown /f {Folder Path}
cacls { Folder Path} /G administrators:F
Note: please replace {Folder Path} with the real folder path.
After that, please try to delete the folder again.
Does it work?

A script to create a new folder and place selected items into it?
I'd like to select a few items and have either an Apple script / contextual menu automatically create a new folder and place the selected items inside it.
I have many, many to do—which is why I wanted to know if there is a script or automator or contextual menu thing available. Or if not, how can I create one?
Can that be done? Thank you!Thank you for your help. Now I just want to expand on this a bit. To use the Applescript you have supplied me, how do I tell it to name the folder other than by date, and where to put it?
Let me say, preferably, is it possible to make an action like this right-clickable? Instead of having to pick a script. Anything that slows this process down means I might as well do it all by hand. What I'd really love to do is this:
Select a number of items. Right click to an action saying "create a new folder and put this items in it. Name the folder with the first item's name". Very simple and quick.
Could this be accomplished? Through Automator? or something that can appear in the contextual menu? Folder actions?
I'm just getting started with using these tools. -

How to move all images from a site to a new folder and not lose links?
I have always wondered this.....tried a few things with no success..Whenever I take over a site from someone, a lot of time the previous designer did not make folders for ANYTHING including images.....so in thier main directory they have 20 html pages, 200 images and css files etc.....I can not think this way.....I want to just make a folder for images...put all the images there.....a css folder....etc. Once I do this all my links are lost and it is to much work to replace each one with the broken link finder in Dreamweaver......In some other applications like Logic Studio ( a music production application as an example ) it is very similar. Your main song file is pointing to linked audio files all over your hard drive....If you decide you want to move that drive it will search for the linked audio files and when it can not find them it asks you to specify the new folder or search manually for them.....if I had moved 200 audio files it comes in quite handy because I can just point to that new folder and im done.......finally, my question is what would you guys recommend for doing this? Moving hundreds of image files so that I can organize things...........any help would be GREATLY appreciated...I have googled but found no great technique...
I'm having the same or similar issue... I think... trying to do a little house cleaning in the file structure. For example, in our events folder I'm creating archive folders (i.e. - 2004, 2005, ect...) and when I use the Files Panel to drag and drop the past event pages into the newly created archive folder, the pages loose all their links.
Image link prior to and after moving are the same (../images/logo1.gif)
It does ask me to confirm that I want to move the file but nothing about updating the links. Is it due to the way the files are linked in the original files?
Thanks in advance for any help!!! -

Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.
Ok, so I have a problem where Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.
I have documented this problem on my blog here:
Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it Rhyous's 127.0.0.1 or ::1
This has my hardware details, etc...
I consider myself an expert at troubleshooting (being in support for over 10 years including time as a Lead Technician doing Windows 2000 support focussing on performance), and have checked quite a few things to try to pinpoint this issue, but I just can't find the cause.
I am asking others if they have seen this issue. I need to know if it is only on my workstation, or if others are seeing it as well.
Have you ever right-clicked, chose new folder and then had to wait 45 seconds for a new folder to appear.
Then the same thing when you try to rename the new folder, a hang of about 45 seconds before the new name take affect.
Anyway, let me know if you have experienced ths.Hi,
I suggest you temporarily uninstall the antivirus program to check the issue. You need to make sure that you have the installation file to reinstall it later.
If it does not work, I suggest you also test the issue in Safe Mode and Clean Boot to determine if this is a hardware or a software issue.
Good luck!

Can't create new folder on an external hard drive, and how to transfer files?
Hello everyone,
the non-English speaking videographer I translate for is having problems operating his Premiere CS5 for Mac from an external hard drive. He cannot create new folder on the external hard drive (the "New Folder" button is grayed-out when tries to export media onto the external hard drive) and when he simply tries to create new folder, the "new folder" option isn't available.
He suspects it's because the hard drive was formatted for PC.
Questions:
- should PC-formatting cause that problem?
- what's the proper way to transfer media files from PC-formatted external hard drive to the internal hard drive on Mac?
Would appreciate your advice.
Dimitri VorontzovHe is right on the money
Now, for the sad or FAT part. You need to format the drive as FAT32 to make it work both on PC and MAC but, and that is a big BUT, the max file size of any given file will be 4GB. I haven't treid other formats yet, like the journaled MAC OS extended, but I don't think that would work. We transfer our files through or own gigabit network so I never had to try it, other than FAT32 formatted SDHC cards. -
New folder and modify access rights
I have played around with a script.
My script looks like this:
#Variables
$GroupNameTIA="F_KSMCommon-common-ScanTIA_m"
$Directory = Read-Host "Folder name: "
$DirectoryPath = "z:\$Directory"
#Mount directory
Net use Z: \\stg-w75\ksmcommon\common\ScanTIA
#Create new folder
New-Item -Type directory -path $DirectoryPath
takeown.exe /F $DirectoryPath
#Read and modify ACL
$ACL = Get-Acl $DirectoryPath
$ACL.SetAccessRuleProtection($True, $True)
Set-Acl
$DirectoryPath $ACL
$user_Account = $GroupNameTIA
$Acl = (Get-Item $DirectoryPath).GetAccessControl(“Access”)
$Ar = New-Object system.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule($user_account,
“FullControl”, “ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit”, “None”, “Allow”)
$Acl.Setaccessrule($Ar)
Set-Acl
$DirectoryPath $Acl
$Ace = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule (
$GroupNameTIA,
"Delete",
[System.Security.AccessControl.InheritanceFlags]::None,
[System.Security.AccessControl.PropagationFlags]::None,
[System.Security.AccessControl.AccessControlType]::Allow
$SD = Get-Acl $DirectoryPath
$SD.RemoveAccessRule($Ace)
(Get-Item
$DirectoryPath).SetAccessControl($SD)
#delete mounted directory
net use /d z:
If I run this script I got an error:
Set-Acl : Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.
At C:\PSScripts\NeuerScanOrdner.ps1:187 char:12

+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.UnauthorizedAccessException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.SetAclCommand
It makes no difference whether I let
the script run with an administator
account or "run as administrator".
Although I am the owner of the folder, I get this
error message.
I do not know why this happend. Whats wrong?Set-Acl is a flawed cmdlet. It often tries to call the API to write the security descriptor with the flags to change the owner and SACL, both of which require privilege activation (doesn't matter if your account has the privileges, they need to be enabled,
too). There are a few bugs about this on the Connect site.
I get a more descriptive error than you did when I try to run your script, but maybe those differences are due to different PowerShell versions. Anyway, I almost never use Set-Acl, and instead use the .SetAccessControl() method of the file object (which
you already did at least once in your script).
The following worked for me, so let me know if it doesn't work for you (make sure you put back in the part where the $DirectoryPath and $GroupNameTIA variables are defined):
$ACL = Get-Acl $DirectoryPath
$ACL.SetAccessRuleProtection($True, $True)
# Apply rule protection and get the SD again:
(Get-Item $DirectoryPath).SetAccessControl($ACL)
$ACL = Get-Acl $DirectoryPath
# Give group full control:
$Ar = New-Object system.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule (
$GroupNameTIA,
"FullControl",
"ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit",
"None",
"Allow"
$ACL.SetAccessRule($Ar)
# Now remove delete rights from folder
$Ace = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule (
$GroupNameTIA,
"Delete",
[System.Security.AccessControl.InheritanceFlags]::None,
[System.Security.AccessControl.PropagationFlags]::None,
[System.Security.AccessControl.AccessControlType]::Allow
$null = $ACL.RemoveAccessRule($Ace)
# Apply the changes:
(Get-Item $DirectoryPath).SetAccessControl($ACL)
The
PowerShellAccessControl module has a function called Set-SecurityDescriptor that works like Set-Acl, except it won't try to set the owner or SACL unless needed. -

Creating new folder in sharepoint
Hi - I am using Office 2013 and using the "Save as" function in Word want to create a new folder on the SharePoint site. there does not seem to be any way to do this through the "save as" dialog process. The "new folder" option
only seems to be available for saving on the local hard drive. It seems I need to go into file explorer, create a new folder and then go back into Word to save to it.
Thanks - TimHi,
A quick hack for this if you use the same document library over and over is to map a network drive to the library, then when you save to the network drive (and thus the document library) you'll see the new folder option available and working.
A second method, would be to click on the address bar in the save as dialog, remove the "http:" and change "/" to "\". For instance:
http://mysite/personal/iedaddy
would become
\\mysite\personal\iedaddy
and then magically the Organize and New Folder menu bar appears, interestingly this method will also allow you to add new folders even to libaries with the "New Folder" option explicitly turned off.
A similar problem can be found here:
