Create new folder on external hard drive.

I am using an external hard drive with my Mac Air. How do I create a new folder on the EHD so I can sort my documents?

I double clicked on the icon (under Finder/Devices). My choices are: Open, Open Enclosing Folder, Eject Free Agent Go Flex Drive, Get Info, Remove from Sidebar. Do you have any other suggestions?
I also tried double clicking on icon, then going to File. Only choice was "New Smart Folder".

  • New folder for external hard drive?

How can I give myself permission to make a new folder on my external hard drive? Right now it is in a "You can read only" status.
Thanks, and Im new on here so I don't know if I'm posting this to the correct group.

Click on the drive, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

i just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library

Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External?

    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

I was backing up my MacBook with Time Machine and using my new (correctly formatted) external hard drive.  All was going well when my 2 yo knocked the disk leading to a "failure" by time machine (Latest Backup:  Failed).  Now the MacBook will not even recognize the hard drive.  I have rebooted, tried all I can think of, but no acknowledgement of the drive.  The drive itself makes noise and vibrates as if working, but nothing from the Mac.  Please help or $100 down the drain...  Thank you.

  • Importing a contact folder from external hard drive onto new iphone

It is kind of a long story...my mom was updating iphone on computer when computer crashed. iphone crashed. had friend move all info from crashed computer onto external hard drive. got new iphone.
so, she no longer has a computer and we have to share mine. she has her own itunes on an external drive and i have my own itunes on another hard drive. i got almost everything except the contacts moved back on her phone. i see the folder and contacts in a 'contact' folder on the external hard drive, but how do I move that to the new iphone without it being in outlook/google/yahoo. i tried 'adding folder' to the library containing the contacts, but that didn't work.
    any suggestions? thanks!!!

thanks for the advise about the two users. so, i did that. but, now cannot seem to import the contact folder into the Address Book. the files in the 'contact'-hard drive are called CONTACT files (.contact). i don't know what that means. can i open those in the address book?

  • Can't create folder on external hard drive from LR. or open images from LR in PS.

I just restored my mac back to factory settings and reinstalled LR 5.  When I try to create a folder on the external hard drive it gives me this message
"The folder /Volumes/Leigh's/Picutures/2014 could not be created on disk."
Also, when I go to "EDIT IN" PS it gives me this message
"Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at /Volumes/Leigh's/Picutures/2013/Cypress/untitled-4-Edit_tonemapped.tif for editing.

Not sure what happened since I restored the computer and reinstalled LR. Might it have something to do with using the same HD from my Time Machine back up?
    Thanks.

  • Satellite A665 - Create Recovery Data on External Hard Drive

    Hi

  • Moved iTunes folder to external hard drive

I have a 40-gig iBook and wanted to create more space on the hard drive so I pick up a 160 gig external hard drive. I copied the iTunes folded onto the new external hard drive including the iTunes Library, iTunes Music and the iTunes Music Library.xml files. I then went to the iTunes reference folder and changed the location of the folder to the new external hard drive. My music shows up in iTunes but when I select a song I get the “The song “___” could not be found. Would you like to locate it” error message. How do I fix this problem without relocating each song?

OK try this. Warning, while I am hoping it won't this might lose all your ratings, playcounts, and playlists.
Exit iTunes. Go into the iTunes folder and make a copy of the two database files onto your desktop. These are the files that contain the ratings, playcounts, playlists, etc. If you don't care about those things, then skip this and go to the next step.
Now create a NEW iTunes library by following these instructions...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
Now, grab, drag, and drop the iTunes music folder where your music and other media already is, onto your new library. It should now add all the stuff to the library AND know where it is now. It may create a new copy of everything on your hard drive, so you need to have enough room to do this. When it is done, you can go ahead and delete the old location you just dragged and dropped if it was all copied into the new library's music folder.
Again, if you don't care about ratings, playlists, etc. you can stop here since you now have everything back in your library and working. If you want to try and save your ratings, etc. we can try this...
Exit iTunes. Go get those copies of the database files you put on the desk top. Move them and overwrite the ones that were created in your brand new library. Restart iTunes. Did you get them back?

  • Transferring playlist to new laptop from external hard drive and old laptop

I've seen similar topics before but none exactly describing my situation. I currently have itunes installed on my work laptop, but have the majority of my music on my external 120GB hard drive. When I add songs to itunes, I add them from the music folder on my external hard drive, thus the external hard drive must be plugged in to be able to play my music. However, if I import a cd it gets saved to my C drive on my work laptop under the itunes music folder and gets played from here.
I recently purchased a new personal laptop and would like to export my entire music library and all playlists from my current work laptop and external hard drive so that I would be able to have all my music in itunes on my new laptop without having to manually adding songs and changing the song info again. I worried that if I copy my itunes music folder to my new laptop it will look for the E drive (external hard drive) to play them rather than my new laptop hard drive. What's the easiest way to accomplish this task?? Please advise.
    Thanks..

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.

  • HT4527 I transeferred my itunes to a new computer via external hard drive, however over 4000 plus songs have a ! mark beside it and they cannt be played as itunes states that the location can not be found.  how do i fix this so all my music can be played.

    Hi
I recently moved my itunes to a new computer by using a external hard drive.
However my itunes music is not all playable.  over 4000 songs have a ! mark and when tried to be played or copied to ipod or iphone, it says that this song cannot be found and asks to locate it.
How do i fix this problem so that all my songs are available in itunes

It is probably best to start over. These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

  • ITunes won't locate iTunes folder on external hard drive....

My iMac crashed last week, and I picked it up this afternoon.
Prior to the crash, I had transferred my entire iTunes to an external hard drive. When I tried to connect the newly configured iMac, I opened iTunes, and followed the instructions as Apple recommended - at least I think that I did, but nothing happened.
Creating a new folder doesn't seem to be the way to go since all of my music is already on the external hard drive. I know that I'm missing a vital step; I'll appreciate some help.
    Thanks.

    Hi Ramón:
    You wrote:

Did you follow these steps: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748 They can be a little involved, but it should work. Try them again. Keep in mind that you're not really "creating" a new folder, so much as telling you iMac where to find the folder you've already created so it can locate your external drive and the music you have on it. And remember, as it says in the Kbase article: _Note: If you move your music library to an external hard drive, you will need to have that drive connected to access your files._
If you need a more detailed account of how best to proceed, take a look at this non Apple-produced article: http://www.tuaw.com/2006/09/19/how-to-keep-your-itunes-library-on-an-external-ha rd-drive/ A not very tech-savvy friend of mine used it to mover her itunes library to an external drive a few weeks back and said it helped her a lot. (Between you and me, the Apple ones worked did just fine for me, but whatever works, you know?)
If after following the linked instructions you still encounter problems, please post back and give us a better sense of what you did and what you mean by "nothing happened." ;- 0
    Good luck!

  • Backing-up ONLY NEW ITEMS to external hard-drive

I like to stay on top of backing-up my iTunes media to my external hard-drive.
My question is how do I do this where I'm backing-up my entire library but only adding new and/or changed items to the back-up folder(i.e. backing-up ONLY new/changed data since last back-up)?
As of right now, my iTunes media folder(Primary) is 66.5GB that is stored on my "D" drive on my pc.
My back-up external drive is a Western Digital 160GB with about 45GB free space on it. While that's plenty of space for growth of my back-up files, it's not enough for me to store a 2nd NEW iTunes back-up folder which would then(after successful back-up) allow me to delete the prior back-up.
Here's another relevant question that ties in with this:
    Why doesn't the following option exist right now in iTunes?;
    +*File>Library>Back-up to external drive...*+
Which should also include: being able to select the drive and also tick the box for "Only back up items added or changed since last backup"
    Anyone?

Forget itunes and use SyncToy from Microsoft. It does incremental changes.
