Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

Hi,
I recently bought a T530 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I want to create recovery disc(s). However, in the "Create a recovery media" wizard, I don't have the option of selecting DVDs if tick the option "Copy the recovery partition to the media". I have a bunch of DVDs lying around and I would like to use them. Not to mention that I don't intend to buy USB drive just for this purpose.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you,

Hi egrivel,
As stated above, there is no option to create optical recovery media.  You can use a flash drive.  8G 16G I believe, but verify that when running the utility.  Make sure "copy the recovery partition" is checked.

  • Cannot Create Recovery Media - USB

Hi, I have a Toshiba P875, Windows 8. Tried creating recovery media on a brand new Transcend 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive. I get the error code 'Format failed! (Error Code: 040E87-0A-000000000) What could be the issue? Couldn't find any answer on the forum. Disabled Anti-virus but still did not help. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Anand

Here’s how I got my Toshiba to create recovery media on a USB drive that gave the following message:
    'Format failed!
It appears that Recovery Media Creator recognizes some USB drives as having two partitions even though one only shows up under windows.  I tried 2 different USB drives the first was a Team Group 16G USB 3.0 thumb drive and the second was a Kingston Datatraveler 16g 3.0 USB thumb drive. Recover Media Creator work flawlessly with the Kingston drive and gave me the error with the Team Group drive.  I tried formatting the drive with windows which didn’t help.  I downloaded HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool located on the cnet website and formatted the Team Group drive (run as administrator).  After that it also worked flawlessly.  So my advice to anyone who gets the “Format failed” message with Recovery Media Creator is either try using a different thumb drive or download HP’s format tool and let it format the USB drive.

  • Satellite T230D fails to create recovery media

I have a Satellite T230D running Windows 7 Home Premium. When attempting to create recovery media using a USB drive, the process starts by advising that the USB drive will be formatted.
At this point it fails with the error code 040EAE-57-00000000. The USB drive is left in an unusable state and cannot be reformatted by Windows.
The HP USB Format utility does manage to reformat the USB drive.
Before starting to create the recovery media application I disabled virus control, the firewall and Internet access to ensure that nothing got in the way. I have tried this twice with the same result both times.

    Hey mate,
Very interesting. I have the same model and I also created the USB recovery medium but at the end it was no problem for me. I also got an error message during creating the medium so I tried another USB stick. Before that I formatted the USB stick with default settings. So I started creating the recovery medium and this was done successfully with the second (other) USB stick so no problems at all.
I have used 8GB USB stick from CN Memory, model Spaceloop XL. What USB stick you are using?
By the way: I would recommend verifying the medium after creating (just mark this option in recovery media creator). That means the files on USB stick will be checked if they were copied properly or not. This could be important if your notebook doesnt start anymore.

  • Creating Recovery Media on Shared R/W DVD

On my Toshiba netbook (n508) I can map a drive to a shared DVD R/W but when I go to create a recovery DVD it only offers me a choice of a USB drive.   I cannot see buying the Toshiba external DVD or a 16 GB pen drive for a one time use when I have a shared DVD drive and a 2 GB pen drive for all other uses.   How do I use the shared DVD drive to create the back up DVDs?
It would be so much simpler if Toshiba included recovery disks.  It would not cost that much in quantity and would solve a lot of headaches for the users.

Recovery media can be created on CDs, DVDd or USB flash drives, but not on USB HDDs. If the external storage firmware is designed in such a way that it detects the device as Flash drive, it can work.
best is to use USB flash drive because when you create the recovery media on a USB drive, one generally do not use it for any other purpose. this is to avoid any curruption or virus related issues. dedicated 16GB USB flash drive is recommended, need not block your 320GB drive for recovery image anyways.

  • Recovery Media Creation to USB fails: "CD Creator has stopped working"

Bought new HP desktop system this week. Came with Windows 8, upgraded to 8.1 and then tried to create recovery media onto a USB stick.  Followed all the steps in the HP Support article (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03481733) but at point 9 the copying files stage doesn't complete (progress never gets off 0%) and instead a pop up error message appears saying "CD Creator has stopped working".  The only option is to cancel. What should I do next?

Harvec, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them. I believe that you should have made the System Recovery Discs before updating to Win 8.1.  The Discs are made using the OS that came on the computer when it is new.  The only thing that you can do at this point is order the Discs from HP.

  • NB305-02P Attempt to create recovery media damaged format of USB drive?

Twice now, I've tried to created a recovery record using 16 Gb USB drives. Different makes of drive, one I have been using previously on an XP computer, works fine there. In both cases, the attempt to create the recovery record resulted in a USB drive that was unusable. The Creator program calls for the re-format of the USB drive, that fails, and then the drive is indicated in Windows as having zero capacity, plus it cannot be re-formatted by any method I've tried so far.
What I'd like most, of course, is a way to repair the failed drives. Failing that is there a specific method I can use, with a new drive, to avoid this problem?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Can't create recovery media -- R&R doesn't see USB dvd-r drive

I have a cheap asus usb dvd-r drive.  When I plug it in, everything's recognized by windows 7, however, when I get to the screen in create recovery media where I have to selected my device to record on, the drop down menu is blank and I can't select my USB dvd-r drive.  I have seen some other threads telling me to uninstall the driver and restart, but that hasn't worked.  Any ideas?
    x201 tablet, windows 7 32-bit

    plsfoldthx, welcome to the forum,
please do and check the following; attach the drive when the system is turned off, start the system and then enter bios (F1). Navigate to and open the startup menu and check that the drive is recognised by bios, hit F10 and then enter to save and exit. The system will restart.
Once windows has booted have another look in R&R to see if the drive is recognised.
I've always suspected that R&R calls up it's drive information from bios because hot plugging a drive has never worked for me with R&R.

  • Re: Unable to create recovery media flash drives

I recently purchased a new Toshiba netboo NB305-N440BL and upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium. Using the "Create Recovery Media" wizard, as suggested, I attempted to create the recovery media on two flash drives. The flash drives were brand new and had never been formatted.
When inserted the "wizard" program stated that the Flash drives needed to be formatted, but when I asked that they be formatted, the program said that there was an error and they could not be formatted. I then formatted the drives using Windows Explorer Disk Management, reinserted the drives and received the same "...needs to be formatted, but wouldn't format ..."message. I also received "error code 040E2D-00-00000000".
I Googled this error message and found two others who had the same problem with their Toshiba net books when they attempted to create the back up material. There were no responses to their requests for help.Is there another approach to making the back ups?
    Thank you

I finally gave up and returned the computer to tech service at Fry's where I bought it.They found that the OS did not recognize the flash drives at any of the USB ports, so they exchanged the computer for a new one ( I was still within the 15 days after purchase for a return) and the new computer works perfectly, Thanks for all the suggestions.

  • Cannot Create Recovery Media in Windows 7 Pro for x120e

You can have only one copy of the Microsoft Windows operation system. The Product Recovery Media Creator will exit now.
HI all. First, I have read "Creating Recovery Media in Windows 7" at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74040.
I get this message when attempting:
You can have only one copy of the Microsoft Windows operation system. The Product Recovery Media Creator will exit now.
What happened is that I blindly copied the recovery files to a USB and just copied to a folder on my desktop XP machine. So now my X120e is saying, sorry, you can't do that again. You already did it blockhead!
So how the heck do I undo this so I can create appropriate recovery media? System restore rollback? Registry key editing? Here are the files on my XP, I have no idea if I create Windows 7 pro recovery files from these.
Thanks all for any suggestions or known fixes,

Like many things Microsoft, the "you can only burn recovery media once" limitation just inconveniences the honest users, but doesn't slow down the bad guys. Oh well....

  • How to create Recovery media as USB

Hi, Toshiba support told me to buy new recovery media from www.backupmedia.toshiba.eu for my Satellite t110.
I ordered the recovery media but it's on CD/DVD! This model doesn't have a CD/DVD drive..
Please let me know how I can create this recovery media on a USB stick. Please note that I don't have any of the Toshiba utilities on my T110.
Simple instructions please - I'm new at this.
    Thanks
    Phil

I used 4 DVD-R discs. They were on sale - 25 DYNEX discs for $7.
Go to: start/all programs/my toshiba/toshiba recovery media creator
    Insert your 1st disc.
Select create and follow the prompts.
Label your discs with a disc marker - recovery disc 1,  recovery disc 2, etc. or whatever you'll remember.
store them into individual envelopes or shells and put them in a safe place.
BTW: If your hd "crashes" you'll need a new hd.

  • Create recovery media external hard drive wiped?

HP Envy 17 Notebook 17-k206naL0G03EA#ABU Hello, First time poster. First time HP owner. Hope someone can help me. Have not long had my new laptop and was directed by the HP support assistant to create recovery media.I have done this but used my external hard drive. It now seems that all the files I had on my external drive have gone. Is there some way i can return my external hard drive to its previous state and recover all my files? Cheers Sam.

Drives that you buy usually are formatted MSDOS (aka FAT or FAT32) for PC's and Mac's can read and write to this format, unless you specifically formatted the drive in Disk Utility to OS X Extended (journaled) so I'm guesing here is was "MSDOS" already from the begining and didn't change.
Your hardware description isn't specific enough, so please update with the latest machine and operating system so we know.
I'm suspecting something is wrong with your USB port(s) as you seem to have a lot of drives and perhaps your computers ports are worn out and this is resulting in a error message as the computer isn't making a good connection on the hardware as it appearing for many drives.
Also if your using port powered drives you may want to use a powered USB hub, as Apple has limited the power drain on USB and this could be a issue.
Of course the obvious, the new cable is bad.
