I have an older Ipod touch with 4.2.1 and cannot be updated any further, how do I install apps on it now?  so far every app I have tried says I need an updated IOS.  This sounds like I now have an apple product paper weight unless I want to run out and buy the latest and greatest overpriced apple product.

Are you willing to buy a newer iPod? How about the 4g @ 16gb for $199* usd or the 5g @ 32gb for $299*.

  • Late 2008 mbp - installed new ssd - trying to boot from snow leopard iso on flash drive - says 'cannot install mac os on this computer'

    Hello -
I just installed a new M500 Crucial ssd in my late 2008 mbp - everything was working fine on old hard drive (running snow leopard) but was getting slow and wanted to upgrade - i lost my snow leopard disk when moving from hawaii so i found an iso online - using a flash drive i partitioned the disk and made the bootable image on flash drive - formatted as extended/journaled - switched out the hard drives - plugged in the flash drive - started the comp - held option - install begins to boot - choose language - all is fine - choose english - next step window pops up saying 'cannot install os on this computer' - click on utility but all options are greyed out - disk util is greyed out - only options it gives is to start from backup or restart - real confused here - all help appreciated - thanks in advance and happy new year!

Snow Leopard comes in discs only.  The USB drive may be a counterfeit and/or corrupt.  There are two options for you:
Get replacement original OSX installation disks from Apple customer service.  Have your MBP serial number ready and there is a charge.
Or two, purchase a Snow Leopard disk from the Apple online store:

    Ciao.

  • Simply says "cannot install on this computer" when installing on my g4

help! i went through all the steps and just before installing, it says "cannot install on this computer" with no error code, no other buttons, and no way to resolve the problem. i'm installing on a g4. please help!

    Hello,
You don't provide enough information to provide you with a definite answer. What are you trying to install? OS X, an update, a program, etc.?
If you are talking about an OS X 10.4.x update, then you should make sure that you are getting the PowerPC version and not the Intel version of that update.
If you are talking about installing OS X (or any other Mac OS), then you do need to be aware of the following:
The Mac will only install from Restore Disks / OS installation disks that meet one of the following criteria.
    1) Original Retail boxed version of Mac OS that is of a later version than the computer originally shipped with.
    2) Software Restore / Installation disks that originally came with that specific computer.
If you are using anything other than that, you will not be successful in getting the computer to boot from the installation disks and install the Mac OS.
If you purchased / obtained install disks from someone else, and they are not retail disks, then that could be the problem. The grey disks are an OEM disk, and are keyed to a specific computer. If they do not detect that computer when you try to install them, then it will not work.
These disks are usually labeled with machine name on them like eMac, iMac, etc.
Even if the machine you have is the same one printed on the label, it still will not likely work. Not only do they check to make sure it is the same type of computer, but they also check to see if it is the exact same revision and version that it shipped with.
If one thing is different, then they won't install.
And, as mentioned above, if you use retail installation disks, then you will need to make sure that they are of a version later than the version which came with the computer. Apple has a mechanism built-in to prevent installation of an OS that pre-dates the version which shipped on the computer.
Perhaps a bit of clarification is in order:
I don't know which version of the Mac OS came with the computer you are specifically working with, so let me just use OS 10.3.7 as an example.
So, assume that the computer originally shipped with OS 10.3.7 pre-installed from the factory.
Now, the computer (and the Mac OS) would prevent you from installing OS 10.3.6 or earlier on it. The reason for this is that the operating system needs to be aware of all the system's specific needs. It needs to know how it's power management system works, and so on.
Now for the tricky part, I mentioned that in regards to the retail boxed version that you would need to install a version later than the version which came with your computer originally. Now, that may sound funny, but here's why.
Let's suppose that OS 10.3.7 was already available before your computer was produced. And, let's suppose that a few unique customizations were necessary to make the current OS 10.3.7 run on the new machine. In that case, Apple may have released a custom "Build" of OS 10.3.7 that would run on the new system. So, in that case, the already available retail version of OS 10.3.7 may fail to work on that system. But, OS 10.3.8 would be aware of the needs of that machine since 10.3.8 would include the customizations provided in that special build of 10.3.7.
So, that is why I suggested going for a newer revision of the Mac OS when purchasing / using a retail boxed package. That way you can make sure it is aware of your system's specific needs.
    I hope this helps.

    Any help much appricated

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Installer built with Application Builder gives error "Cannot install, higher version already installed"

I am having an issue with an installer which I created with the Application Builder. I have a project that I have successfully deployed. Subsequently I created another project (and vi) which is based on a copy of the originals, both with new file names. In the renamed project file, I changed all file names, paths, and all resources, to reflect the new names. I also changed the installer’s destination and install folders, of course. I reset the executable’s version number (in the Build Specification properties) to 1.0 (the original was 1.3). I then successfully built an executable and the application installer. However, when I run the installer (setup.exe), it gives a dialog (after the license screen) that it “Cannot install” because a “higher version already installed”.
I’ve done exactly the same thing with other vi’s and projects of mine, and never had this issue. The installer correctly installs the newly created (and renamed) version where it is told to in the project file. Also, I’ve never had a problem deploying (installing) on my development PC either.
I have carefully checked and rechecked to make sure there is no reference to the original executable or paths. What could be causing this behavior? I want to keep the two projects completely separate, so simply changing the version to higher than 1.3 is not an acceptable solution.
Thanks to anyone in advance for any help and suggestions.
    Ed

Yes, LV 8.5 does NOT give me control over the GUID. In the project file there are three such strings:
    "App_applicationGUID"
    "App_INI_aliasGUID"
    "App_INI_GUID"
They all have different numbers and none of them match the GUID or PackageGUID in setup.ini. I don't know if they are related or not, but usually it's not a good idea to mess with (manually edit) files like these (project, ini, etc.) unless you know what you are doing. (For example, I do edit the setup.ini file to change some of the [Dialogs] parameters, but that is based on direction from NI support.)
Anyway, like I said, I've made copies of projects before and never ran into this problem. At least I have a solution, however laborious, in creating a new project file from scratch.
Let me know if anyone has more thoughts on this.

  • Firefox tries to install update then says cannot install update because you have to close another Firefox window, repeats every minute. Doesn't stop.

Update cannot install, says I must close any other Firefox window. (No other window open ) Cannot install update because another Firedox window is open.Since a recent update occured, You Tube videos flicker and browser favorites flicker. There is a flash card speed adjustment. The Flash Player and Firefox is not in sync.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder:
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates)
    Do a clean reinstall:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Getting started, set up wizard says cannot install this hardware

My old 20gb iPod died after three years today so I went straight out and bought an 80gb clasic. When I got home and connect it the found new hardware wizard states; 'Cannot install this hardware, there was a problem installing this hardware, Apple iPod USB driver, an error occurred during the installation of this device, the system cannot find the file specified, click finish to close the wizard'
    Any ideas people?

Are you using the latest version of iTunes? If you're using 7.3 or earlier, chances are the Classic will not install properly.
