Creating 2 partitions on HDD for M30-852

Does anybody knows how to partition the HDD?
The recovery disk is not offering any option for creating 2 partitions.
I understood that the BIOS is located on HDD so you have to be very carefull about this, eg not using any other WIN XP CD-ROM?
Is this true?

Thanks a lot. Hope it works.
What about BIOS located on HDD and not on the motherboard chipset?
Is this true?
This means you can not install/HDD format WINXP from a standard disk because of potential BIOS eraseure!

  • How to best partition the HDD for dual boot: Windows 8 & Linux

    Hi,
I'm a newbie in Windows 8, linux, Partition....
I would like to use my new laptop with windows 8 pre-installed to the following:
Create a Dual Boot Windows 8 / Ubuntu
Create on my C drive (unique drive on my laptop):
    *a partition for the system
    *one for Windows 8
    *one for Data and
    *last one for Ubuntu OS
    My aim is :
-to install VmWare on Windows 8 and run Checkpoint Splat with virtual machines to perform CCSA labs.
to install GNS3 on Ubuntu for CCNP labs but with GNS3 accessing files in the Data partition
I have a Toshiba Satellite with 750Gb and 8 Go RAM.
According to you what's the best size for my partitions?
Is there a better way to partition my C drive regarding my aim?

    Hi,
    Thank you all,
Isn't it too much 200G for Windows as i will on ly install VMWARE Workstation 9 for lab purposes and possibly a few softwares.
VMWARE installed on Windows will require 2 GB + 1 GB per host (i will use approximatively 15 hosts).
Checkpoint products will be installed on VMWARE that is installed in Windows :
    - disk space needed for 3 Checkpoint gateways: 3*37 GB
    - disk space needed for 2 Checkpoint gateways management servers: 2*10 GB
On Linux I'll install GNS3 with 10 GB disk space required and a few softwares.
I've got a Toshiba stellite computer with Windows 8 pre-installed.
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @2.5 Ghz
    RAM: 8 Go
    64 bits OS, processor x64
    See below the screenshot
I've taken screenshot of my partition (below).
    * Don't take into account the disk 1 (E) partition
Can u confirm that in Disk o, partitions with 450 Mo, 260 Mo and 9.48 Go are for recovery system?
I am planning to let the recovery partition as it is and divide the TI30985500A (C) partition (688 Gb) into:
    - 200 Gb windows partition
    -100 Gb Linux partition
    -388 Gb data partition
What do you think about this partionning regarding the informations i've provided above?

  • Tecra R10-10W - Can't create partition during installation

I got Tecra R10-10W and I switched from Vista to XP. I used Windows XP Toshiba recovery disk for this.
I was not able to create partition on hdd during the installation.
I wonder did I miss something?
How can I split my hdd into 2 parts? Should I re-install XP for it?
    Please help me?
    Thanks,

    Hi!
As Akuma wrote its not possible to create or change HDD partitions during the Toshiba recovery installation.
The Toshiba recovery disk contains an image of factory settings and after this you can change the partition size yourself.
I also use Partition Magic and it works really good. If you dont have this tool you can Google for a freeware tool. ;)

  • Remove partition created in reformat/reinstall for A50

So when I got my Toshiba Satellite A50, it had no partition I knew of, just a C drive with XP installed on it. But the disc that it came with for reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling XP is creating a partition!
So this is not the original installation or set up that I had.... I already have an external hard drive, I don't want a partition.
How can I remove the partition? I'm willing to completely reformat the hard drive all over again, but if so, how do I do that?
The Toshiba CD doesn't really give me a command prompt to go reformatting the hard drive myself....
The other annoying thing is that my C drive was NTFS, but the disc is creating one drive NTFS and the other FAT32... also ... what's really scary, is when the Toshiba disc loads it says "loading Windows 98".... to my understanding my laptop NEVER had 98 on it... I'm praying this isn't a 98-xp upgrade. It seems someone gave me the wrong disc with my laptop?
Or am I worrying over nothing?

    Hello Lou
Believe me you worrying over nothing!!! Please dont be confused about loading W98 message. The unit starts in DOS mode and it is the same as on W98.
Now step by step explanation: I have done recovery procedure many times and have a little bit experience with it.
When starts, recovery CD shows menu with two options: STANDARD and EXPERT installations modes. STANDARD mode simply erases the whole HDD and creates one partition (the whole HDD capacity) for OS installation.
EXPERT mode should be used if you want to install OS on already created partition or if you want to create new partition for OS installation. Please note you can create just first partition there ( C: ) and you can not modify already created partition.
In my opinion it is always good to have two partitions, the first one for OS and installation and second one for data saving. You can not always have external HDD with you. If something goes wrong you can anytime install OS on first partition without loosing data saved on second one.
Anyway, start recovery procedure and choose STANDARD recovery procedure (option 1). The whole HDD will be formatted and Os will be installed on one partition.
Bye and if you have more questions please write again.

Yes, sharing a TM disk is a bad idea, and disks are cheap enough so that you don't need to.

  • Partitioning 500GB-HDD and 80GB-SSD for Arch

    Hello guys,
I have a laptop with a 500GB Harddisk and a 80 GB SSD installed, and I would like to get the most efficient partition layout.
Note: Many times I have seen people suggesting putting the swap or the /var/tmp on the SSD, that is definitely something i do not want. SSD Disks have a limited number of write operations before they die, and therefore putting the Swap to the SSD is ridiculous.
I have come up with the following partitions scheme, and i would like to discuss, and refine that with you:
--- To make things easier I called the HDD hddX and the SSD ssdX. ---
    /dev/ssd1        /boot            ext2        noauto,noatime    1 2
    /dev/ssd2        /            ext4        noatime        0 1
    /dev/hdd1        /var/tmp        ext4        noatime        0 0       # on hdd for compilation
    /dev/hdd2        /home            ext4        noatime        0 0
    tempfs            /tmp            tmpfs defaults,nosuid,size=1024M,mode=1777    0 0
16 GIG Swap at beginning of HDD!
Is there any refinement you see? Or anything else in /var that must go on the HDD?
    Best Wishes,
    Daniel

I have been using ssd laptop for quite some time now, and I have to definitely agree with graysky about swap. You probably don't need swap. It's an echo of the past, when PC's really were low on ram... Today, unless you use some specialized memory-hungry software you can do without swap even with 2GBs of ram. Check your system monitor, it's likely that you have a big memory redundancy all the time. And 16GB swap is ridiculous - you would go mad with software working on swap, even 2GB, believe me. And running all that you have in your system probably wouldn't use all your ram. It's funny how people still think that they need swap today. Use it only if you use hibernate.
I would put /boot and / on ssd. I don't see any reason to put /var on ssd - surely ssd is fast, but hdd isn't that slow - I doubt that var would use more than 50MB/s, which every modern HDD should exceed. And depending what you mainly use /home for, it also can be put on ssd.(/home is hmmm... "unpredictable" - for example WINE can mess it up).
And remember to add noatime and discard mount options to ssd partitions. There are few other tweaks for ssd too. For example, if you put /home on ssd, you can move your web browser's cache(I moved it to RAM).

  • Creating a recovery drive for a K430 computer

Hello-I have a K430 desktop computer with a1TB HDD,12 GB Memory and Win8 64 bits. I used a !TB Seagate USB Drive for C drive backup and a 2GB Flash drive for Personal Document backup. I created a HDD image backup and a backup of my personal documents using the Lenovo procedure.. I understand that I need either a WIN8 disk or Recovery drive to boot and re-install my image file.
I am having problems creating a Recovery Drive. I formatted the drive to NTFS and verified that the Flash Drive was recognized by my computer. I searched for Recovery Drive.exe and it appeared. However, my flash drive did not appear on the Recovery window and the Next button remained greyed out. I will check and see if I have a recovery partition.Have you developed a fix for this problem? If so, please let me know. Thanks.

Updating Creating a recovery drive for a K430 Computer
Hello-I obtained a copy of Microsoft's Windows  Create a USB recovery drive and discovered that I do not have a recovery partition. After entering recimg/showcurrent  in a command prompt, I received a message stating that there is no active custom recovery image.
I attempted to create a recovery partition by entering mkdir C:\RefreshImage and recimg-Create C:\RefreshImage after the Command Prompt. This resulted in the following error message: recimg-createIMage is not recognized as an internal or external command. I have reported this problem to Microsoft also. If you are aware of a fix for this problem, please let me know. Thanks.

  • Satellite A200-10X: How to partitioning the HDD

    Hi there guys!
I have a pro with my satellite A200-10X, it has only one HDD volume, and i want to make them two... and everytime i use the product recovery CD, it formats the HDD... but i do not know how to partition the HDD two get two volume spaces...
and whats worse is that when i keep on doing that over and over it eats the HDD free space... so how can i partition the HDD and recover the 200GB space the computer originally have?
    i appreciate your help ..
    thanx

    Hello Sherif
If you use delivered recovery media you have follow options:
    1. the whole HDD capacity can be used for partition C
    2. the HDD capacity can be split and you can create two partitions
When you use both options Vista will create 1,4 GB partition but this partition will not be visible when you use OS.
If you want to have two partitions (C and D) start recovery procedure and after choosing the language use SETUP button on the right side. In the middle of the screen occurs small window and there you can set how much capacity should be reserved for partition C. when the recovery procedure is finished and Vista starts open Computer Management.
On the left side choose Disk Management. After doing this on the left side you will see partition marked as black. This is second partition but still not visible. Click there with right mouse button and choose option to create logical drive. Follow the setup procedure.
After few steps this partition will be set as logical drive and after formatting it will be visible in Vista Explorer.
If you have more questions please post again.

  • Changing HDD for SSD QUESTION (U410)

Is any data held on the 500GB drive at time of reset?
Basically my question is, can I simply swap the 500gb HDD for a 250gb SSD without problems of so when I reset the Windows8 install etc will work as usual?
I will use the one click recovery button, and reset everything, except this time on the 250gb SSD.
    HELP?

    hi shoutingdog,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
First Before you change any setting or setup,
Create a backupdrive first of your WIndows 8 using this Method and let's Name that as your Repair Image.
Download and install belarc advisor to get the product key.
The HDD will have everything, your Windows 8 Os and even the Onekey Recovery Partition, so removing your HDD will render the One click recovery button Not working.
Two ways to install windows 8 back to the blank SSD.
1 You will need an external mount for your SSD or HDD where the scenario should be both SSD and HDD are connected to the computer so you can clone the HDD to your SSD.
(If the clone failed then you can use the Repair Image)
2 You can use a retail copy or any installer copy of Windows 8 and install that to your SSD, if asked for a product key, use the Key extracted using the Belarc advisor.
Any driver needs you can download from Support.lenovo.com
Again The Preloaded HDD Contains the Recovery partition, and the One click feature will look for the HDD where it is saved.
    Best Regards

  • CREATE PARTITION ERROR

    Hi,
I try to create new partition on SSD for Windows OS because I deleted Local Disk Vol. (I am using
    Windows 7 PE)
    DISKPART>SELECT DISK 0
    DISKPART>CREAT PARTITION PRIMARY
    Virtual Disk Service error:The
operation is not supprorted by the object.
The specified command or parameters are not supported on this system.
But i can create a vol.
And i have one more question: How can i make this par. bootable?
    Thanks for your helps...

    Hi,
From your description it seems that you are going to reinstall your Windows 7 onto an SSD disk instead of an HDD.
So whether the partitions on HDD are deleted. which means the HDD is now the "unallocated disk" status?
If so, could you directly install Windows 7 onto the SSD in GUI? Please help capture a screenshot of the current situation in GUI. By clicking "install Windows", the wizard will lead to to disk management screen. Let us know the current situation.
Also if it is a Windows 7 installation question, you should post to Windows 7 forum instead of Windows Server forum:

  • Help creating partitions in RAID 0 Volume

I have 2 Seagate Barracuda 160 GB SATA HDDs running on the ICH5R (865PE mobo). I created one large RAID 0 Volume. I was about to create 3 partitions on Win XP using Partiton Magic 8, but then I noticed that PM does not support Software RAID I searched the web for information on how to create partitions for this kind of setup, but found nothing conclusive. Some people say you can create partitons using software RAID, some say I'll be asking for trouble if I do. Has anyone done this successfully with this kind of setup? Thanks.

This is your thread, so you can do what you want. Since it's a new topic, you might get better response by starting a new thread since some who have viewed this one may not bother rechecking it.
The ICH5R is not a hardware raid solution. It requires a driver and uses the CPU for processing. True hardware raid will cost you 2-3 times what this board cost you. I would start a new thread and I'm sure someone like Vango44 who uses raid will give you the answer you are looking for.

  • Ext. HDD for TM + Windows back up

Hi I have a WD ext. HDD which I use for TM back up. I realize when I want to use it as a HDD for my PC it recognize an external drive but it doesn't show the drive in explorer.
Can someone help me make my ext HDD dual purpose?
    Thank you in advance.

I strongly recommend against trying to use the drive for both your Mac's TM backup and also for use on your Windows system. If you need additional storage space or a backup drive for Windows, then use a separate drive.
There are otherwise only two simple methods. One, purchase MediaFour's MacDisk for your Windows system in order to read and write a Mac formatted disk on a Windows PC. Two, create two partitions on your external drive - one partition is formatted for the Mac, and the other partition is formatted FAT32 for the PC.

  • Disk utility-erasing a HD, creating partition map hanging

    Hi all,
I have been given an external Maxtor USB drive, 120 BG, with the need to securely wipe the old information on it. I have used Disk Utility, and zeroed the HD with a 7 times pass. This took 17 hours, and it moved to the "create partition map" stage. It's been doing that for 24 hours and still the progress bar is rolling. All other options are greyed out and nothing can be selected in Disk Utility. I have chosen to format it in Mac OS X Extended, Journaled. There was about 45 GB data on the drive.
Would this amount of time be expected, or has something gone wrong? I hesitate to force quit DU, in case I render the drive unusable. If I do that or shut down the computer, what's likely to happen to the HD? Will I be able to mount it again and start over. Any tips much appreciated.
    Frances

    Hi Frances,
17 hours for the 7-times pass is normal (and usually completely unnecessary unless you work for the CIA). However, the hang at the "create partition map" stage is not normal. I would interrupt it and reformat the drive, since the zeroing is finished anyway.
