Creating a 100TB+ Storage Volume.

Hi,
I have to create a 100TB+ Storage center for several Mac Pro connected into a fibre network. I want to use some Promise Vtrak products.
Is it possible to use 4x Promise Vtrak 32GB to create one unique raid 5 100TB+ volume? How can I interconnect the 4 peripherals? With a special raid card? or an XServe with fibre channel card?
I am beginner with this situation but I have no choice to perform a configuration like that.
Thanks for your help.
Best regards

Not an answer follows.
At that scale of storage, you may well hit the inevitability of a secondary spindle failure during the overhead of the RAID-5 recovery from the primary spindle failure. Run the bit error rates per the CMU and Google papers of empirical MTBF for disks, and see where you get. (In general, I'd pick a different RAID, as RAID-5 was really good for dinky and expensive disks, but that recovery processing is a massive I/O hit and suffers an increasing risk of secondary failures as the volumes scale upwards.)
Various sites I deal with operating at this scale also have the RAID and all of the block-level processing entirely out at the controller, and not at the host. That includes either journaling, archival processing, and related. (And there exist storage controllers - not sufficiently familiar with the Promise stuff here to tell you if that product features sufficient virtualization - that present the host with virtualized storage, where the SAN doesn't need to allocate the storage to the virtual disk that the host sees until the host actually needs it. That allows the host OS or application to "think" that there's a petabyte or so, but to allow the disk spindles to be added as capacity requirements track.)
Some of the SAN controllers can also stripe that data across far more spindles than can RAID-5, which means you'll have both better use of your spindles, and you'll avoid the transfer limits of the spindles; the fastest you can push an n-volume RAID-5 is the aggregate of those n spindles, where a controller-based non-RAID-5 might be able to get some slice of most or all of your spindles, and you'll be able to use slices across more (or all) of your disk spindles.
Another limit you'll hit with SAN is how fast you can push the FC SAN connections, and the only way around that is more fibre, and spreading your spindles across controllers and fibres.
Why do I mention this? How long will it take to recover that 100 TB array from your archive, or how long to create a full archive of that volume if you need to quiesce that spindle to get a good backup (and do you have archival tools that read that disk array sequentially or can you "stripe" it out?). If you're running RAID-5 with all that, you have the further limit of how fast you can push those 'n' spindles behind that array.
And yes, you might get SSDs going silly-fast here, but run the bandwidth calculations to see if your outboard or FC HBA controllers can go that fast or if you'll hit a performance wall somewhere. But then I've been dealing with some 2 Gb FC HBAs, and they're, um, slow. SSDs work best in-board, and you need sufficiently silly-fast connections to those to make that approach technically viable. (You don't want to be the guy that paid for a metric boat-load of fast SSDs and then mounted them behind 1 Gb FC HBAs.)
Other approaches involve moving to CouchDB or such databases, but that depends on what your data access patterns look like; you're at the hardware level, and sometimes, um, "adjusting" the application design can help massively.

    Hello everybody!
    Please help me.
    I'm using MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), Processer:2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
my computer i have divided in 3 drives: 1-Machintosh HD (Mac OS) 2-Bootcamp (Window OS) & 3-Data (drive for data storage).
I don't want to use Window OS on my computer anymore so I decided to delete drive Data (the third drive) & Window OS (the second drive).
I want my hard drive become a single drive back but when I was formatting, there were some problem display:
then i clicked ok and it displayed like this:
then i try to format or create new partition,  it's nothing happen when press button apply.
my computer has storage space 256GB but now when it is happened like this my storage space is only 127GB only.
so please help me.. what so I do with this problem.

This is a standard error message.
If you would have checked into the bootcamp forum you would have instantly found the solution.
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1244&start=0
All that error message means is that you do not have enough conguous disk space available. No big deal at all for an older system. You have bits of files strewn over the "free space."
The solution as you would find in the bootcamp forum is to clone your HD, using a file-file clone, then test the clone to be sure it is working and then to erase your HD and clone back.
    Works every time.

  • Multiple Storage Volumes For 1 Library

    Hi folks.
I have filled my first drive. Any way I can use space on another drive to put further music, while keeping one single library?
    Cheers

it is not possible without WM.
    As workaround :
You either create for each storage bin a storage location,
    or
you active batch management and let the batch work as bin.

  • The best option to create  a shared storage for Oracle 11gR2 RAC in OEL 5?

    Hello,
Could you please tell me the best option to create a shared storage for Oracle 11gR2 RAC in Oracel Enterprise Linux 5? in production environment? And could you help to create shared storage? Because there is no additional step in Oracle installation guide. There are steps for only asm disk creation.
    Thank you.

Here are names of partitions and permissions. Partitions which have 146 GB, 438 GB, 438 GB of capacity are my storage. Two of three disks which are 438 GB were configured as RAID 5 and remaining disk was configured as RAID 0. My storage is Dell MD 3000i and connected to nodes through ethernet.

  • Create table with storage parameters in a locally managed tablespace

    Hi,
Can we create object with storage parameters in a locally managed tablespace.
    CREATE TABLE my_hash_table_6 (
    name VARCHAR2(30),
    value VARCHAR2(4000) )
    STORAGE (
    INITIAL 1M
    NEXT 512K
    PCTINCREASE 0
    MINEXTENTS 2
    MAXEXTENTS UNLIMITED )
users default tablespace is locallly managed.
Then this table's extent management will be managed as per the tablespace or as the storage parameters which
were specified at the time of table creation.

Why don't you try it yourself ?

  • N96 - Missing Mass Storage Volume?!

    Hi.
Im trying to upload music to the music folder in the mass storage volume on my N96, but have got to a limit of about 1.1Gb added and Nokia Music Manager is telling me I've run out of space (and to delete some music so I can upload more).
This patently isnt the case - I can check the properties of the volume in My Computer and I vet a nice pie-chart to tell me I have the majority free. But if I use a utlility called Folder Size which can give the size of folders up and down a directory tree, it implies that I have very little space left in a volume limited to about 1.2 Gb!
    Whats going on...?
Im trying copying music manually by dragging and dropping with the device in mass media modeat present, but its hardly 'synchronous' music transfer and backup!
    Thanks,
    Damian

I don't know what's going on but Nokia Music Manager seems to have a lot of problems.,
I recommend you use Mass Storage and save the music directly into the SOUNDS, MUSIC or MY MUSIC folders in the phone.
640K Should be enough for everybody

How to create new interim storage area and assign to movement types
    G N Kumar

PLease confirm whether it is interim Storage Type or storge bin, i think it would be interm storage type (ext area for GR/ shipping area for GI - normally storage types with 9 series). If this is the case, you can do in the same way storage types are created and assigned to movement types.

  • Required permissions for SCVMM 2012 R2 Library Share - SOFS on Clustered Storage Volume

    Setup / Notes:
    SCVMM 2012 R2
SCVMM Library Server - SOFS Role on 2 Nodes of Clustered Storage Server 2012 R2
Library Server and Nodes show up under Fabric->Infrastructure->Library Servers
Server and Nodes show no errors or problems
Shares have been added in SCVMM and able to refresh properly
    Problem:
I cannot do any job which involves writing to these shares. Import Resource, Create VM Template, etc. Everything fails with Error (2910) VMM does not have appropriate permissions... Access Denied.
    Solutions Tried:
I have setup FULL CONTROL Share and Security permissions for Administrators Domain and Local, SCVMM Service Account, SCVMM Run as Account, Everyone Account, SYSTEM, Hyper-V Computer Accounts basically everything in my domain. I still get access denied to
    the Library Server Shares.
    Other Notes:
I do have shares configured for VM / shared storage for hosts. These are working great and appear to be configured completely by SCVMM.
What are the required permissions? Are they manually setup or controlled by SCVMM? Why does it appear that nobody has had this problem before me on the interwebs? Am I an idiot?

    More Information:
It would appear that Failover Cluster Manager doesn't immediately change the permissions related to a share. I have manually gone in and set the FULL CONTROL Share and Security permissions for the Everyone Account on the Cluster Volume and the share is now
working. I do need to lock this down for security purposes so what account/accounts does it need?
    Scratch That:
I was able to Import a Physical resource but the saving of a VM to the library does not work... 2904 or 2910.

  • HT4974 How can I select a remote volume (NAS) as my service data storage volume?

    Hi everyone,
I have been struggling with the following:
I have Mac OS X Server (the Mountain Lion add-on) running on a Mac Mini (2009). Ever since the upgrade to Mountain Lion Server (10.8.2) I have been wanting to store the Service Data on my Synology DS412+ NAS. The reasons for this are: greater storage capacity, speed (my NAS is fast) and reliability through RAID5.
The instructions provided by Apple Support point towards the Server App: go to Hardware > Server > Settings > Service Data (click Edit) and select the volume where you want to store your Service Data. However, this only lets me select the volume(s) of my Mac Mini or USB-connected volumes (if present). I would like to select a network share on my NAS, but mounted network volumes do not show up in the list.
FYI, I have connected my NAS to the LDAP service running on Mac Mini Server, so all users have access to it based on their network accounts.
I hope someone has pointers or even conclusive advice how to go about. Many thanks in advance.
    Jannem

Works only when the volume is mounted as iSCSI target :

  • Production Order backflush creating Negative in Storage Type

    Hi All,
We have setup storage types into which stock is replenished based on Min/Max. These storage types have been setup in a control cycle and supply area to backflush upon confirmation of the production order.
I know this is user error, but when doing confirmation (CO15) or clearing COGI the user enters a batch not in one of those storage types (but available at IM level), it creates a negative in these storage types for that batch even though the storage types are setup NOT to allow negative stock.
Is there any other setting or any notes that can be applied to avoid this issue?
    Thanks
    J

    OSS note 489754:
The settings in Customizing which define that no negative stocks are allowed for the storage type, have only an effect on the transfer orders. In addition, you must also set message L9040 as an error message. For this, call up the Customizing and branch to: 'Logistics Execution -> Warehouse Management -> Interfaces -> Inventory Management -> Allow negative Stocks in Interim Storage Types'. There, execute point 'Control of System Messages in Warehouse Management' and enter message type 'E' for message number L9040.

  • New Mailbox Created in Recovery Storage Group

    Using SBS 2003.
Recently created and used a Recovery Storage Group to do a test a restore of a mailbox. I dismounted the Recovery Storage Group but did not delete it. Today, I created 2 new users with the SBS wizard and found their mailbox paths pointed to the Recovery
Storage group. Of course this is dismounted, so no mailboxes are actually created yet.
What would be the best way to fix this? Should I just delete the mailboxes and recreate in the correct store? Would it be better to mount the Recovery Storage group and then try and move the mailboxes, (I'm assuming the mailboxes would be automatically created
    once the store is available)?
Once the problem is resolved, should I make sure it's dismounted then just right click on the Recovery Storage group and delete it?

  • [SOLVED] Create table and storage clause

Hi, I create a table whit lob ad so, I set some LOB storage clause:
    CREATE TABLE W2_T_MESSAGE_NWSL (
    KEY NUMBER,
    T_MESSAGE CLOB DEFAULT EMPTY_CLOB(),
    T_TEXTMESSAGE CLOB DEFAULT EMPTY_CLOB(),
    T_FOOTER CLOB DEFAULT EMPTY_CLOB())
    LOB (T_MESSAGE)
STORE AS (TABLESPACE LOBDATA CACHE READS RETENTION ENABLE STORAGE IN ROW),
    LOB (T_TEXTMESSAGE)
STORE AS (TABLESPACE LOBDATA CACHE READS RETENTION ENABLE STORAGE IN ROW),
    LOB (T_FOOTER)
STORE AS (TABLESPACE LOBDATA CACHE READS RETENTION ENABLE STORAGE IN ROW);I need to export this table and do an import on a different instance.
I know for sure that the tablespace LOBDATA exists on both database but I can't say the same for the user default tablespace.
The problem is that when I import this table, the statement fail because the default tablespace of the user hasn't the same name of the tablespace where the table was exported.
    IMP-00003: ORACLE error 959 encountered
ORA-00959: tablespace 'USERWNSTARTUP' does not exist
This because the create table generated by the export has this storage clause:
    PCTFREE 10 PCTUSED 40 INITRANS 1 MAXTRANS 255 STORAGE(
INITIAL 65536 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1) TABLESPACE USERWNSTARTUP LOGGING NOCOMPRESS LOB (B_LOGO) STORE AS (TABLESPACE "LOBDATA" ENABLE STORAGE IN ROW CHUNK 8192 PCTVERSION 10 CACHE READS STORAGE(INITIAL 65536 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1)
On other tables, where I havent defined any storage clause all works fine.
Is there a way to resolve this problem?
    Thanks
    Regards

if someone is interested I've found this on the official import oracle documentation:
if the tablespace no longer exists or the user does not have the necessary quota, the system uses the default tablespace for that user as long as the table is unpartitioned, contains no LOB or VARRAY columns, is not a type table, and is not an index-only table with an overflow segment. In my case I've a LOB column, so tablespace information would be exporterd. I've done a trace of the import and I can confirm that on table without lob, varray etc.. the create table statement hasn't the tablespace specification.

  • Creating space for scratch volume

Being in the process of setting up scratch file space for my FCP, I am wondering if I couldn't use my second iMac (10.5) which has a new HD with 1.5 TB and 1 TB empty space, to store at least part of my FCP folders, I am thinking of the original AVCHD files.
How do I set up a connection between both my iMacs via router/modem? I have tried creating a second ethernet connection, but I need more information to get this working. First of all, is this a viable solution? Would this work? And if so, where do I find information to connect both macs via ethernet router? Both macs are connected to the internet and working fine, but I need them to see each other, so I can transfer files from one to the other.

Thanks, Nick and all others. I have several firewire drives and I need reorganizing them for FCP. So the best thing to do, having only 1TB available on my second mac, is to store the original AVCHD files there with file sharing (I guess Silverkeeper will do the trick) and use the firewire drives as scratch volume. I have two 1TB firewire drives, but they are almost full. So I need some 2TB drives. I wonder how FCP with Apple ProRes 422(LT) will compare to FCExpress with Apple IC.

  • Mysterious empty files created on Windows server volume

We have several Mac Pros on our Windows network. Our IT staff is reporting that one of our Mac user's accounts is creating hundreds of thousands of empty files on one of the volumes. File names like '.dat9caa.00c'. Anyone run into something like that before?

Sounds like malware or a OS X glitch that keeps placing the hidden OS X files on Windows volumes
Remove the user data, delete the account and re-establish it and the data.
If it's contained in the user account that should clear it, if not, wipe the machine and reinstall OS X from a clone or reinstall by hand.
There is software that will prevent OS X from placing it's hidden files on Windows volumes, however interaction with OS X is wonky afterwards.
