Creating a certain style in ID CS4

This is a journalism style question.  I want to create a style in ID CS4 such that:
1. The initial letter is a drop-cap, AND
2. The first line is all bold, small caps, AND
3. Everything else in the story is a certain body type style.
Is that possible to have one style that will apply all of that at once, or do I need to treat each of those three elements as separate styles?
Thanks

You want a drop cap with a nested style. Drop cap is self-explanatory. For the nested style, make a character style that makes your text bold and small caps, and then set a nested style that calls the character style until End of Nested Style Character. Build the nested style and the drop cap into a paragraph style, and then insert the End of Nested Style Character at the end of the first line.

  • ChangeCase of Selected Style in InDesign CS4

There is a certain lowercase letters applied in a character style those alone want to be change as UPPERCASE without changing the character style in InDesign CS4 (for e.g. if a group of lowercase characters (that can be any letter) applied in a character style "smallcaps". I want to change that all lowercase characters to UPPERCASE by selecting the "smallcaps" style. Please help me out how to do it in InDesign CS4.

  • Certain styles, links not working for me in textflow

I am building a reader app using the text layout and text flow, but I am having difficulty setting certain styles ('formats') on paragraphs, particularly related to padding and margins. If I take the tlf markup I create and import it into the adobe labs rich text editor, all is well. This leads me to suspect that there is a problem with how I/we are implementing the text flow renderer/controller.
Note some styles do work, such as indenting, bold, font, etc.
Anyone seen this behavior and have a possible cause/solution?
    Thx,
    d

The margin attributes were removed intentionally because they weren't implemented correctly.  The paragraph* attrbiutes were added after some research as a replacement.  It's nice that they inherit unlike padding or margins.  The margin tags may come back - they need to play nice with padding and borders - but it won't be in this release.
The only thing special about the posted example is that its way out of date.

just create keyframes with your displayobject positioned and do not using tweening between the keyframes.  or use actionscript and a timer to change the object's position.

  • In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph?

In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph.
I need to make a table of contents for my Mater's Thesis and want to use the automatic table of contents feature.  I want the first sentence of a paragraph to have a different paragraph setting than the rest of the paragraph.  Is this possible?
    Thanks!

Nice of you to be doing this for your Mother's Thesis.
    There are several issues here:
    1. A Paragraph Style is what it says, the style for the paragraph
    2. You can format text within a paragraph by applying a Character Style
    3. Pages 5.5.1 lets you apply formatting to overall text for the T.O.C. but not parts of it and you can not retain that formatting as a Paragraph style
So in answer to your question, no.
You will need to create the T.O.C. manually and unfortunately as Pages 5.5.1 can't create bookmarks (just one of over 100 missing features) you will be unable to link the T.O.C. to the referred pages in the list.

  • Sales Orders not to be created for certain customers via legacy

    Hi,
We have an inbound interface from legacy into SAP which creates Sales Orders in SAP. But we have a requirement where the business does not want sales orders to be created for certain customers in SAP via the interface.
To prevent the sales orders from being created for those customers via the interface, we have created entries in the look-up tables (Hope other projects also use lookup tables and are aware of what are look-up tables). But still the sales orders are being created in SAP for those customers via the interface.
What else should we do to prevent the sales orders from being created for those customers.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Create a list style with unique space after the last list item?

I should start by saying that I'm a web designer and therefore extremely used to using CSS for type setting to the point that I now become frustrated when going back to the print world
So here's what I'm trying to achieve:
    - I want to create a list style for bullet lists
    - I want there to be 3pt space after and space before paragraph breaks
    - I want there to be 9pt space after the entire list (or last list item)
I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this short of overriding the space after amount on the last item each time I use my style.

Pay attention to how +"styles work by example"+. Form up the list levels the way you want them and then select them to make the list style.
Personally I can't help remarking on the obtuse behavior of programmers that they manufactured all the problems on the internet and only now, more than a decade later, patch together "solutions" they struggle to implement due to the legacy of all the awful standards we never needed to have in the first place.
    Peter
btw The last list item is always a problem in typesetting. Usually you deal with it by having a particular style for that or the paragraph afte,r all of which can take multiple forms.

  • How can you create a paragraph style that removes all spaces and forces everything to lower case?

    Hi,
Is there anyway of using GREP (or some other magical wizardry) to create a paragraph style that automatically removes all spaces and forces words into lower case?
Strange request i know....I'm wanting to use it for datamerged email addresses.
    Thanks

so doing it through InDesign is a work around I'm exploring.
Excel has the 'LOWER' function and the ability to record macros for a quick find/replace on the spaces - so that's definitely a good option if it can't be solved purely in InDesign.
You can change case via scripting in InDesign. This AppleScript (OSX only) will set the case of the selected paragraph style to lower. It would be possible to add some code that would strip spaces as well:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
        activate
set StyleList to name of every paragraph style of active document
        set myDialog to make dialog with properties {name:"Document Paragraph Styles"}
        tell myDialog
            tell (make dialog column)
                tell (make border panel)
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        make static text with properties {static label:"Choose a Style", min width:150}
                    end tell
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        set myPresetsDropdown to make dropdown with properties {string list:StyleList, selected index:0, min width:150}
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        set myResult to show myDialog
        if myResult = true then
--+1 gets the correct name because list starts at 0
set myStyle to item ((selected index of myPresetsDropdown) + 1) of StyleList
        else
            return
        end if
        destroy myDialog
        tell active document
set myStyle to paragraph style myStyle
repeat with j from 1 to (count stories)
repeat with i from 1 to (count paragraphs in story j)
if applied paragraph style of paragraph i of story j is myStyle then
--defines a variable to replace the generic this_text parameter in the handler
set SCText to the contents of paragraph i of story j
set contents of paragraph i of story j to my change_case_of(SCText)
                    end if
                end repeat
            end repeat
        end tell
    end tell
    on change_case_of(this_text)
        set the_comparison_string to "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
        set the_source_string to "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"
        set the_new_text to ""
        repeat with thisChar in this_text
set x to the offset of thisChar in the_comparison_string
if x is not 0 then
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & character x of the_source_string) as string
            else
set the_new_text to (the_new_text & thisChar) as string
            end if
        end repeat
        return the_new_text

  • How to create an object style with repeating formatting?

I am trying to create an object style that will create my subhead formatting after each body of text; in other words, I'll have 5 or 6 subheads, all in need of the same formatting, but they will be separated by bodies of text with multiple paragraphs. How do I go about specifying this repeating formatting in an object style?

Unless the number of paragraphs between headings is always the same, and always needs the same formatting, you can't.

  • Can I create a single style that goes "text (tab) bold text (tab) text"?

Im working on a car listing booklet and trying to figure out the best way to merge info into the document.  The best way I can figure out for my needs is to physically copy and paste the info out of an Excel file and into a text frame of the ID document.  Im familiar with normal merging when you make a connection to the file but I dont think that will work for this.
What the listings need to look like is:
Bobs Cars   (tab)   Ford   (tab)   Mustang   (tab)   Year
I need the make to be in bold but since its not actual columns in the ID document, then I have to manually highlight the Ford and click the style for making it bold.  I have about 10,000 listings and that just isnt going to work that way!  Something like this I would generally create a paragraph style for the whole thing with a character style for the bold.  I want to be able to highlight the entire list and apply one style to make it work out.  Is there a way to create a style that knows to apply a character style after the first tab or some other method that I cant come up with yet?

Thanks for all the help, I learned a lot about this!  But now the client wants to try a different layout...ugh!  I feel like this nested style method might be able to do something like this as well.  He wants the car make, model and year to be more like a bold heading with the miles, price, dealer, phone underneith it and in a non bold or smaller font.  Below is what one of the listings looks like in the Excel file:
    Acura
    ILX
    2013
    0
    $35,295
    L.P.C
    Phone
    0
    $32,295
    L.P.C
    Phone
    0
    $32,295
    L.P.C
    Phone
    0
    $30,095
    L.P.C
    Phone
Like the previous, I would like to do one thing that will autoformat all 10,000 listings at once.  I was thinking since the info for the heading started with text and the info below started with numbers, maybe there is a way to set the styles to work only when the first "word" is text or numbers and know which style to apply to it? (The 0's are just for this one listing, many have other numbers for mileage also so cant set it to just search for zeros btw)

  • How do I create a text style in CC libraries? Every time I drag and drop text into library form Photoshop or illustrator it turns it into a graphic.

How do I create a text style in CC libraries? Every time I drag and drop text into library form Photoshop or illustrator it turns it into a graphic.
If I select the text layer and click the text style button in the library it just creates a new text style for Myriad Pro 12pt - I'm not using that anywhere in my document.
Can anyone help? Seems like a bug to me as I'm trying what the video tutorials are saying.

I realize AI is an illustration program.
Do you realize it is an object-based vector-based program? Do you know the difference between raster-based and vector-based content?
My question seems to be all over the forum but no one has been able to answer other than exporting to these file formats, which make text look awful and of no use....
And yet everyone else in the world makes proper web images every day using a plethora of programs, including these...go figure.
    Am I missing something?
    Yep. Pretty much.
Hello Adobe! People use transparency on website logos.
Hello, cocteau! What you're calling "transparency" is inherent to object-based vector artwork. But web browsers don't support object-based vector artwork, except via file formats like Flash and SVG, or by viewing as a PDF in a plug-in version of Reader. Raster imaging in general only supports "transparency" by either indexing a specific color (i.e.; "don't display this color", as in GIF) or including an alpha channel (i.e.; "blend all the pixels with existing pixels, based on values from this extra channel", as in PNG). It's all in the raster file format you use, cocteau; it has little-to-nothing to do specifically with Adobe software. Such things are among the most basic matters understood by someone doing web design.
When I export an eps from .ai file, and open the eps in photoshop,...I save as a gif for the web, it goes back to the original problem...creates jagged text. I"m giving up on this garbage...Thanks a lot adobe! Lower the price of this software if this is all that can be done.
Once it leaves Photoshop (or Illustrator, or whatever) as a non-proprietary raster image format, it's all about what the format can do re "transparency". You can do this stuff with most any graphics program. You should read about basic web design and the differences between raster and vector content, rather than rant.

  • Add a line as part of a character style in InDesign CS4

    Hi all,
I'm new in InDesign and am in the process to design a 4 pages newsletter for the internal IT dept. of my company.
Each page (A4) has 2 columns and will contain one or more articles.
I'd like to create a character style to format the title of each article so it would stand out and include a line underneath the text.
I had a look at in the underlining options and nearly found what I needed except that I'd like the line to be the same length as the column width and not the same lenght of the text it underlines. So I managed to achieve what I wanted by drawing a line; but is there a way to include that line as part of my "article header" style so I don't have to draw it each time?
Or maybe there's an option to make the underline longer than the text, but I didn't find it.
    Thanks in advance

Hi guys and thanks for your super fast answer.
I'm in ID now and there's no such option in the Paragraph style panel.
Basically the underlining options in the Paragraph Style window are +/- the same as for the Character Style one.
    Options available are:
    tick box to activate option
    weight
offset (moves the lines up and down to the text, but doesn't increase the lenght of the underline)
    colour
    type
The options, tint, overprint stroke, gap colour, gap tint and overprint gap are greyed out for me.
This is what I want to get. The first line is with the underline option on (line is same lenght as the text)
Second one is with a line drawn as grahical object.
So question is: how can i include a line like in the second example in a style so I don't have to draw it each time?

  • How do i create o new style in ppages?

I would like to have a list style that adds no extra space after the line feed and another list style that adds 1/2 line after the line feed.
How do I create these new styles in Pages?
    thanks in advance,
    Ed

We no longer have line feeds because we know longer have fixed line lengths. That is why it is called a text string and it just wraps to fit.
Your model was back when the text was monospaced and there were 80 green characters per line on a black screen. I sure hope nobody is using ANSI anymore.
Irregardless of the ancient history, you are talking about paragraph returns, not line feeds, because that is the only place space after applies.
I don't have an iPad, which should be in a separate forum, but assume it all just is applied via paragraph styles wherever they may be.
