Creating a collapsable panel in InDesign

Hello,
Is there anyway in InDesign to create a collapsible panel effect like you can do in flash and DW. Something like an accordion effect?
I have 5 paragraphs of text visible to show different topics, but I would like to place all the text for each one in that space and then just have the user click a button and expand that section to see all of the type.
Can that be done using the interactive InDeign features? Or the DPS ones? Is that even feasible? And if so, does anyone know a good tutorial to point me to that could get me to the best approach for this?
thanks
babs

Thanks Bob-since I was on a time limit, I did do it in InDesign, just with buttons and animations and it worked fine. Didn't want to chance trying something new like this. I am going to work on Importing the HTML and testing the asset issue over the weekend when I have some time to really test that.
As always, many thanks for the guidance!

  • Creating Scrolling text panels in Indesign CS5 for Interactive SWF's

    Hi,
Is it possible to do as it says in the title?
I want to add some text panels and provide the ability to scroll through the text.
It will be output to an Interactive SWF file online.
Can this be done in Indesign CS5?

    Hi,
    Thanks for the updated information.
I created a scrooling text box in Flash CS5 and created the swf, that works fine.
Importing into Indesign CS5 isnt as straight forward as I expected?
I get the SWF icon on the Indesign Page, but previewing or publishing only shows the SWF icon, no Scrolling Text box displays.
Im ust add that if I click on the SWF icon the Text box displays, but I want it to display by default?
Are there more steps I need to take?

  • How to create a custom panel in the right way (without having an empty panel in the file info) ?

    Hi Everyone
    My name is Daté.
I'm working in the fashion industry as a designer and Design consultant to help fashion brands improving the design workflow by using Adobe softwares and especially Illustrator.
I'm not a developper, but i'm very interested about the possibility to introduce xmp technology to provide more DAM workflows in the fashion industry.
Fashion designers produce a lot of graphical objects in illustrator or Photoshop. Unfortunately they are faced to a big challenge which is about how to manage, search, classify and get this files faster. Of course PDM system or PLM system are used in the Fashion industry to manage data, but for many companies, implemanting this kind of database is very complex.
When i look at what you can do with xmp, it seems to be an interesting way of managing design files, then i started to follow Adobe instruction to try to build a custom panel.
The main idea is to (Theory) :
create custom panels used by fashion designers to classify their design files.
Use Adobe Bridge to search files, create smart collection to make basic reports in pdf and slideshows
Find someone to make a script able to export metadata in xml files
Use indesign and the xml file to generate automatically catalogues or technical sheets based on xmp values
I have created a custom panel by using the generic panel provided by Adobe and i have modified the fields to feet with the terms used in the fashion industry and it works well.
But unfortunately, when i try to create my own custom panel from scratch with Flashbuilder (4.6) and the Adobe CSExtensionBuilder_2 (Trial version), it doesn't work!
    Here is the process :
    I have installed flashbuilder 4.6
I have download the XMP Fileinfo SDK 5.1 and placed the com.adobe.xmp.sdk.fileinfo_fb4_1.1.0.jar in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.6\eclipse\plugins
In Flashbuilder, i have created a new project and select xmp Custom panel
The new project is created in flashbuilder with a field with A BASIC Description Field
To generate the panel, right click the project folder and select xmp / Publish Custom Panel
The panel is automatically generated in the following folder : C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\custom file info panels\3.0\panels
Go to illustrator, Open the file Info
    The panel appears empty
The others panel are also empty
The panel is created and automatically placed in the right folder, but when you open it in Illustrator by selecting the File Info option in the File Menu, this custom panel appears empty!!! (only the title of the tab is displayed). This panel also prevent the other panels to be displayed.
When you delete this custom panels from the folder C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\custom file info panels\3.0\panels and go back to the File Info, the other panels display their content properly.
I also try to use the plugin XMP Namespace designer to create my own namespace. this plugin is also able to generate a custom panel, but this one also appears empty in AI or Photoshop.
I try to follow the process described in Adobe xmp documentation many times, but it didn't works.
It seems that many peaople have this issue, but i dodn't find a solution in the forum.
I try to create a trust file (cfg), but it didn't work.
It would be so kind if you can help me to understand why i can't create a custom panel normally and how to do it in the right way.
Thanks a lot for your help,
    Best regards,
    Daté

    Hi Sunil,
After many trial, i realize the problem was not coming from the trust file, but from the way i have created the custom panel.
There is 2 different ways, the first described below is not working whereas the second is fine :
    METHOD 1 :
    I have downloaded the XMP-Fileinfo-SDK-CS6
In the XMP-Fileinfo-SDK-CS6 folder, i copied the com.adobe.xmp.sdk.fileinfo_fb4x_1.2.0.jar plugin from the Tools folder and i pasted it in the plugind folder of Flashbuilder 4.6
The plugin install an XMP project
In Flashbuilder 4.6 i have created a new project (File / New /Project /XMP/XMP Custom Panel)
A new xmp project is created in flashbuilder.
You can publish this project by right clicking the root folder and selecting XMP / Publish Custom Panel
The custom file info panel is automatically published in the right location which is on Mac : /Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/3.0 or /Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/4.0
Despite the publication of the custom file info panel and the creation of a trust file in the following location : "/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/FlashPlayerTrust", the panel is blank in Illustrator.
I try this way several times, with no good results.
    METHOD 2 :
I have installed Adobe CSExtensionBuilder 2.1 in Flash Builder
In FlashBuilder i have created a new project (File / New /Project /Adobe Creative Suite Extension Builder/XMP Fileinfo Panel Project)
As the system display a warning about the version of the sdk to use to create correctly a custom file info, I changed the sdk to sdk3.5A
The warning message is : "XMP FileInfo Panel Projects must be built with Flex 3.3, 3.4 or 3.5 SDK. Building with Flex 4.6.0 SDK may result in runtime errors"
When i publish this File info panel project (right click the root folder and select Run as / Adobe illustrator), the panel is published correctly.
The last step is to create the trust file to display the fields in the panel and everything is working fine in Illustrator.
The second method seems to be the right way.
For sure something is missing in the first method, and i don't understand the difference between the XMP Custom Panel Project and the XMP Fileinfo Panel Project. Maybe you can explain it to me.
So what is the best solution ? the right sdk to use acording to the creative suite (the system asks to use 3.3 or 3.5 sdk for custom panels, so why ?)
I'm agree with Pedro, a step by step tutorial about this will help a lot of peaople, because it's not so easy to understand!!!
Sunil, as you belong to the staff team, can you tell me if there is  :
A plugin or a software capable to extract the XMP from llustrator files to generate XML workflows in Indesign to create catalogues
A plugin to allow indesign to get custom XMP in live caption
A plugin to allow Bridge to get custom XMP in the Outputmode to make pdf or web galeries from a smart collection
How can you print the XMP data with the thumbnail of the file ?
Thanks a lot for your reply.
    Best Regards

  • An idea of how to create a front panel

    Hi all,
Want to create a front panel using LV 8.  The panel using a vertical splliter bar to divide the panel into 2 sub panels, the left will be small , the right will be somewhat bigger than the left and as the main infomation display area. when click the splitter bar , the left panel can auto hide or collapse , if  click it again , the left panel  can open again . Please give a suggestion of achieving this . Thanks.
    David

    Hi David,
Yes, you can customize the positions of splitters, and as a result, control the size of the panes on your front panel.  Here are some of the different properties you can change on a splitter bar:
Position on panel (i.e. horizontal pixel location of vertical splitter or vertical pixel location of horizontal splitter)
    Foreground and background color
Whether or not it is "locked" (i.e. can't be repositioned by the user while the VI is running)
The sizing attributes of the attached pane(s) when the splitter is re-positioned
There are also several properties of the Pane class that relate to the panes on either side of a splitter.  Let me know if you'd like more information about those (although I suppose you could look for yourself at the LabVIEW 8.0 Evaluation version).
    Good luck,

  • CS4: Collapsed panels won't stay open

I messed up my regular workspace view and reverted to a preset and noticed the collapsed panels won't stay open when expanded. I'm not sure if this is how it used to work, but it just feels wrong.
Let's say I want to move an object to another layer. I click on the collapsed Layer-panel icon to open it, then select (click) the object on artboard and Layer panel collapses back to icon. Then I need to click the panel icon again to open it and now I can move the object to another layer, but layer panel collapses again when I select another objet.
I remember having this same UI problem with Flash CS4. Have I messed up some setting, or is this really how UI works in Illustrator? I would like to save screenspace by having panels collapsed and only keeping open the one I need. InDesign works like this, keeping expanded panels open until they are collapsed again.

Thank you! It must've have switched on when I reverted to another screenset, because I can't remember ever seeing this setting (or even reading about it).

  • Collapsable Panel Group: close previous panel on next panel focus

    Hello All,
I am playing around with Spry and started off with the Accordian.  But I wanted to be able to 'expand all' so moved on to the collapsable panel.
However, I also want the accordian effect, whereby when one panel is clicked and opened, the previous panel will close.  Is there a variable to include in the collapsablepanelgroup to acheive this?
Looking at it another way, I want to 'close open panel(s), open new panel', when the mouse clicks on the new panel.
    I'm using Spry Pre-Release 1.6.1
You can see my efforts so far at http://yabbox.com/spry.php
Many thanks for your help and direction.
    Andy

My first answer would be.. Use the accordion ;D
However, I also want the accordian effect, whereby when one panel is clicked and opened, the previous panel will close.  Is there a variable to include in the collapsablepanelgroup to acheive this?
Not with out modifications to the collapsible panel code.
But you could just create a custom for you that remembers the previouse panel that was clicked...
and add onclick="" to each panel tab to activate the function

  • Creating custom UI panels : where to start ?

    Hi,
i've had a  hard time searching for clear information on how to create custom panels in InDesign.
Maybe the wrong keywords, i dont know, but here i am
I would like to create a panel displaying all the "text variables" and their actual values and be able to edit them right there.
I have no idea where to start, any primers ? Cues ? Ressources ?
Many thanks for the help !
    Ugo

Well i was actually asking myself the very question : do i really need a panel ?
So far i found a script thhat pretty much does what i need :
run the script opens a window
When all the fields are populated, hit continue and the custom text variables are updated with the freshly entered information
Now i need to tweak this code to suit my variables and find a way to "get" the current values instead of the defaults ones populating the form.
So i guess i can always execute the script to update, correct and update the variable and anytime, saving me the trouble of going about creating a plugin (this scared me more that anything )
I'll make sure it runs and see whats up. Any chance i can ask you later for support if i hit a rock?
Again thanks for the kind help, i now have ressources and some vocabulary to find stuff!

  • Collapsable Panel Nav

I am trying to create a vertical navigation bar that has 5 large main categories and then up to 15 sub pages underneath.  I want the 5 large main categories to autocollapse but also when someone navigates to a sub-page it highlights that particular nav button and also keeps that menu group expanded.  I like things neat and tidy but also like the web visitor to know where they are at all times.
I tried a pure collapsable panel with hotlinked graphic buttons.  But, I cannot achieve the auto open when at a sub page. (maybe if I bail on template mode?)  Then I tried to place a Spry nav within the sub collapsable panel but again that does not achieve my goals.

As far i understand you want the last opened panel to be open on other pages that the user might go to..
What you could use is cookies to save the last used state example: go.spry-it.com/cookie

  • How to create an autoplay slideshow in InDesign

Hi, I would like to create a banner in InDesign with transitions and export as swf file, but I would like it to autoplay on load instead of having people navigate from page to page.
Is it possible to create an autoplay action within InDesign?
    Thank you

I have the same question, but I'm afraid there's no such setting in CS5.5. It would make a good feature, so you will be able to make stand-alone flash web banners without having to use - or know how to work with Flash Pro.
I tried something wit the Timing window, but I was not able to work out the simple sequence that I had in mind.
If somebody has an idea I'd be happy to know about it!

  • Create unlimited folios today with InDesign CS5 and 5.5!

    Adobe's official statement
    http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/2011/10/create-unlimited-folios-today-with-indesi gn-cs5-5.html
    Did you know…
Customers with InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 can now create an unlimited number of .folio files for no additional charge.
You already know that InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 integrate with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to allow customers to publish apps to tablet devices such as the iPad, Xoom and PlayBook. But for InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 customers who are interested in creating content for tablet devices but are not yet customers, it is now easier than ever to try digital publishing before making the financial investment in the Digital Publishing Suite solution that meets your needs.
InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 customers can now:
Create an unlimited number of .folio files in InDesign
Preview them on Adobe Content Viewer  – including interactivity – to see how they will render when published to a tablet device
Share them with colleagues or clients on a 1:1 basis via the Adobe Content Viewer
Further, customers can now access the Folio Producer Service in the Digital Publishing Suite with a valid Adobe ID to manage and edit their .folio files. All of this can be done before purchasing Digital Publishing Suite.
If you are interested in learning how to create an App directly from InDesign CS5 or CS5.5, without writing code or depending on a developer, feel free to try it. You can pitch ideas to your client or your boss; or you can build a portfolio of your work and preview it on a tablet device. Practice makes perfect, and with an unlimited number of .folios, you can practice as much as you want! When you’re ready to publish to an app store, you can select the Digital Publishing Suite solution that is right for you.

I'm sorry EvBurk, what you want is intended not to work.
All Adobe's promotional material concerning InDesign and Digital Publishing (including the above "official statement") carefully uses verbs like "create" or "produce". But they never mention "distribute" or "spread", without explicitly referring to their exclusive hosting services. The whole Folio thing (in contrast to the former "issue" format) revolves around not giving you any chance of physically exporting, managing or owing the folio file itself. It's always somewhere on Adobe's or Apple's servers, or on your iPad, which is also as shut as a vault. So there's no way to export a folio file and toss it around like a pdf or jpeg. All you can do (without a paid distribution) is "share" your folio with some others, under the idea of "testing" and "reviewing". But this can be a cumbersome method. And even when paid (for the app), it's still difficult to distribute it outside Apple's or Android's market.
More than a year ago (in the middle of the Flash-on-iOS debate) Adobe users, developers, bloggers, and evangelists heavily criticized Apple's "walled garden". Adobe literally stated "We Love Apple - What we don't love is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web." Well, you could say now: "I love Adobe, but what I don't love is Adobe taking away my freedom to own my files, and distribute them on my own terms." They let us create, but not spread our ideas. It's like giving you a typewriter and copier, that only works with Adobe stock paper. Like giving you a voice and an instrument, but only allowing you to sing and play in some walled gardens (dress code: Apple ID) or secluded shed (invitation only).
I really wonder why they so fiercely protect 'their' Folio file. Why do they either have to be "under protection" or be turned into apps? I understand why Apple wants and needs to curate apps, but they don't mind me spreading my own ePubs, mp3 or jpegs. Why doesn't Adobe let me put my folio's on my own server, or send them off to someone with my own preferred service? The Content Viewer could easily be an Acrobat-like reader and let the iPad open folio's (by web links or mail enclosures) into it. If I see how many questions, worries, and problems creators and users have due to this whole closed technique and business, it would be easier to just let go and see what happens. Is it money? Of course it is. But my guess is that Adobe would eventually benefit more from it.
So I hope Adobe declares the Folio as an "open" standard soon, but they're definitely not in that stage. Maybe the specification of the file format just isn't ready yet. Maybe some managers need to remember again how to "Spread the Love"...

  • Creating custom Metadata panels in Bridge CS3

I want to create a custom panel that allows me to enter 14+ pieces of information about an image that are not contained within the existing metadata panels.
I can create a custonm panel in photoshop that is seen under 'File info' but I cannot see this information against a file in the metadata in Bridge.
In the Bridge metadata panels you have individual panels such as GPS, IPTC Core, History, etc. Can I create my own custom panel to add to this list?
If so how is it done? Where are the custom panel files stored?

  • FAQ: How do I create a scrolling panel in Flash Catalyst?

A common challenge in web design is finding space in the available window to display all of the necessary content. One solution is to create scrolling panels. A panel creates a well-defined container for content in the user interface. By adding scrolling content and a scroll bar, you can place a large amount of information in a limited space. To create a scrolling panel in Flash Catalyst, you need:
An object to define the panel area, such as a rectangle shape (optional)
Scrolling content, such as a long block of text or a series of images (required)
A scroll bar used to scroll the content (recommended)
Follow these steps in Flash Catalyst Help to create a scrolling panel:
    Create a scroll panel component
There are also video tutorials showing examples of different scrolling panels:
