Creating a curved star.

Hi folks,
I used to have an extension that would convert a star shape into a curved star shape.
I know this is possible in Illustrator by default but not in Fireworks at least not  up to CS4, my version.
There used to be an extension developer who created and marketed one which I may still have on an old PC, but that box lives at a different address and as I'm now on a Mac may not even be compatible, unfortunately  I have forgotten the name of the developer so am unable to contact him (I think).
Cheers
Peter (R.)

Hi Peter,
The star autoshape has roundness handles where you can adjust this. There are two roundness handles Roundness 1 and 2 which are for the tips and the valleys. Just click and drag these handles for visually adjusting the roundness.
These can also be set precisely using the Auto Shape Properties panel. One of our tutorials has a related demo: http://www.smartwebby.com/free_tutorials/fireworks_tutorials/graphic_design/sunflower_artw ork.asp

  • Creating a shiny star effect

    Hi,
    Hope you're well.
The following is a link to a tutorial creating a diamond effect on a word.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgHCiuehTwU&feature=related
At 4:35 into it, the author begins creating the shiny parts of the diamonds by drawing a path, copying it and then rotating the copy ninety degrees.
I'm having trouble just creating that first path the way it's done in the tutorial. First, it says to choose a brush of 17, make sure it's white, then switch to the pen tool and draw a straight white line. However, mine doesn't look like that, how it splays outs. I just get a straight white line. Then, when I try to tranform the copy by rotating it 90 degrees I get an error message saying "Could not rotate because the initial bounding rectangle is empty."
Can anyone help me create the shiny star shape that's been created in the tutorial?
    Thanks very much!

The person made the path, right clicked on the path, selected stroke path with Brush and Simulate Pen Pressure checked. Then duplicated the layer and rotated the duplicated layer 90 degrees.
To get the simulate pen pressure to work, go to the brush panel under Shape Dynamics>Size Jitter and select Pen Pressure before you stroke the path.

  • Creating a curved line made up of repetitive objects

Is there a way to create a curved line consisting of what looks like disconnected arrows? Something like this but curved:
    > > > > > > > > > >
I thought I once did something like this...just drawing a line and instead of the solid line it was a line of some sort of objects? Can I do this in PhotoShop?
    Thanks, --b

Text on a path with those same characters. Can be done in either Illustrator or Photoshop. For a more complex shape that is not text, use an Art brush in Illustrator. In Photoshop you would need to define the shape as a brush, then stroke a path with that brush using the Edit Menu.

  • Can I create a curved faux column?

I am relatively new to web design, Dreamweaver and CSS and I am not sure what are the limitations involved.
I would like to create a 3 column layout with a the sidebar having a curved look instead of a simple straight box
and have it scalable according to content.
I understand the concept of the faux column and was wondering if there are any method that could be modified to achieve the result?
Is my only option to create the background in Photoshop?
    Thanks

    Hi
To reply to Myleniums answer, using css3, you would have to apply css3 rounded corners to just one corner of the item, along with adjusting the corner width and color to get the rounded effect, then apply a background color to get the left hand item. Finally using css3 transform rotate the item inside a div to the required position.
I think everyone will agree, this is not worth the effort when a simple image of the 'curve' placed inside a div with the required color and a placed background image, would create the same effect.

  • Need help creating perfect curves and outlines (CS3, Windows XP)

Is there a way to make a specific curve that is perfect? It seems that with the pen tool you have to "eyeball" the curve as you drag it. I know that you can use the ellipse tool to make a perfect circle and then use the eraser or scissors tool to cut out a section of it, but that isn't really an ideal method. What I'd like to be able to do is while creating a path with the pen tool place an anchor for the next segment of the path and then specify e.g., a 6" radius, and have it make the path with a perfect 6" radius curve.
I also have a question about outlining, or more specifically, creating a perfect "floating" outline around curved objects. Using this image as an example - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3153/2894804973_a6bf492692_o.png - once you have created one of the outlines, is there a way to perfectly create the other two "floating" outlines? I did those manually, and the straight sections are perfect because that's easy; but the curved sections are not perfect; they are "eyeballed".

    [Man after my own heart]
    > Is there a way to make a specific curve that is perfect?
Not with anything even approaching a sensible, no-nonsense procedure. What do you expect? This is only the top-selling vector drawing program, and it's only been on the market for 20+ years, charging loyal customers a couple hundred dollars for 14 version upgrades so far.
There are two--count 'em, TWO--Round Corners commands. One is a Filter, the other is an Effect. Both prompt you for a radius. Whether you actually get the value you enter as a radius of the curve is a matter of so many ridiculous caveats that you might as well consider it useless.
    Example:
Assume your Ruler units are set to inches.
    1. Rectangle Tool: Click. (Don't drag.) In the resulting dialog, enter 1" for both height and width.
    2. White Pointer: click the lower left anchorPoint to select it. Delete. Now you have the most basic of all figures you might want to put a specified radius on, right? A 3-point path forming a right angle. Furher, you know its height and width; both legs of the right angle are 1" in length.
    3. Filter>Stylize>RoundCorners. In the resulting modal dialog, enter .75" for the radius. Click OK.
    4. The corner rounds.
    5. DirecSelect (sigh--white pointer) the rounded segment (not the points, the segment). Copy. PasteInFront.
    6. Look at the Transform Palette and tell me the height and width of the arc (should be equal to the radius, right? Tell me what you get. I get .5".
Why does Illustrator work this way? The only feedback I ever get when I raise issues like this is something akin to, "James, not everyone wants to do
    technical drawing like you."
A straightforward user-defined corner radius is too
technical for the top-selling "professional" vector drawing program.
So what do you do? A lengthy barrage of cheezy workarounds and inane defenses of the indefensible is sure to follow shortly.

  • Why doesn't the stroke width tool create smooth curves?

Am I the only one who has edited a stroke with the stroke width tool, then outlined the stroke only to find a countless number of points and noticeably unsmooth edges? Is there a setting or certain way to ensure that the stroke width tool won't corrupt the smoothness of my shapes? The stroke width tool is the most handy new feature I can imagine, but this problem makes it almost entirely useless, unless designing something where precision and smoothness are not important. What can I do?

...Am I the only one who has edited a stroke with the stroke width tool, then outlined the stroke only to find a countless number of points ...
I also have noticed that too, for example using the width tool with the same width on all points and expanding on open path results in a lot more anchor points than expanding the same path with the same weight or offset.
    ... and noticeably unsmooth edges?
I haven't noticed that yet but creating paths with smooth anchor points are more smooth when created with less points, at least when I do it manually but if I use Object > Path > Add Points, or just click on a path to add points, I don't see loss of smoothness.
Is there a setting or certain way to ensure that the stroke width tool won't corrupt the smoothness of my shapes? ..
I'm not aware of such settings
... The stroke width tool is the most handy new feature I can imagine, but this problem makes it almost entirely useless, unless designing something where precision and smoothness are not important. What can I do?
I don't know what your precision requirements are, may be an image example of what you are trying to achieve and what you are getting will help understanding you better but so far I haven't considered this as a problem and have used the width tool a lot in my work.

  • Can't use Function keys after creating curves adjustment ?

After I create a curves adjustment layer, the Function keys are disabled.  Every Function key changes the cursor to an eydropper.  You must first click on the left-arrow at the bottom of the pallette to exit the curves adjustment.  Is there a way to fix this?

I believe this issue has been reported a couple of times and is a bug in CS5. So for the time being, there is no way around it.

  • Object Path Outline Stroke creates jagged edges for curve

When I outline a stroke, the nodes created along the curve are not smooth. Have these weird funky loops.
Here is the images as just a stroke with 40 point weight. The segment showed has 3 anchor points.
Here is the funky loops that I discussed above.
Any idea how to smooth out the curves better and avoid this issue? Trying to build a font in Illustrator before I transfer to Fontographer but this is problematic for all my curves.

Thanks for taking a look guys. I've attached additional screenshots.
Here are the anchor points. The nodes and handles all snap to a 10pt grid (sorry about the bounding box, but you can still see the anchor handles in there).
These are my brush definition settings.
I did create the curves using pen tool, then applied the brush definition to the path.

Can I create A B-Spline curve and a NURBS curve in the Adobe Illustrator?

All Splines in AI are Bèziers. There is no way to create other curve types. For the rest simply refer to the help on how to use the path tools.
    Mylenium
I know that all splines are Bezier's, a.k.a Bezier invented them (please CMIIW).
    For example:
    B-spline = Bezier's spline
NURBS = Non-Uniform Rational Bezier Surface
I think all of the curves created by using the pen tool is a linear, quadratic, and cubic Bezier curve.
I hope you understand what I am talking about.

  • Creating a new resource curve

Following on from one of my recent threads, i am now trying to create a resource curve that will amend the forecast for the current month to 0 hours, but keeps the current forecast for the rest of the resource assignemnt
Not sure how this will come out
    May June July Aug Sep
    20 40 40 60 30
I want to create a curve which will amend the forecast hours to:
    May June July Aug Sep
    0 40 40 60 30
Using fill down, i have discovered, will not work for this functionality
    Thanks
    David

what you could do is to offset the activity start (Activity Planned or Remaining Start of say May 1st) and the resource assignment start (Assignment Planned or Remaining Start to June 1st) by using a resource assignment lag. you can display the Original / Remaining Lag or Planned / Remaining Start for resource / role assignments as columns in the Resource assignments window in order to perform a fill down or use a global change. changing the assignment start date changes the assignment lag and vice-versa. Remaining Lag and Start should prove relevant for both not-started and in-progress activities, as opposed to Original Lag and Planned Start.
    e.g.
Remaining Lag = 1m . of course it wouldn't simply be exactly 1m (or 21.5d or 172h) every time you run it because of the different number of working days each month. calendar definitions do not apply. admin settings for time conversions are just a convention.
    or
+Remaining Start = [June 1st]+ , as a custom date to be changed every time.
if running the global change on the 1st of every month, you could use:
    +Remaining Start = [system current date]+
    or even
Remaining Start = Remaining Start + 1m , where the existing assignment start is the same as the activity planned/ remaining start date. i assume that to be the data date.
to tell you the truth i'm still not exactly sure why you need to do this in the first place. depending on your exact needs, make sure you check the filtering criteria you want for the global change (e.g. activity status). test it carefully before applying because, assuming all your resources drive activity durations by default, you can inadvertly change activity dates/ durations.
another issue could be that the total resource units, as well as the assignment finish and the activity finish stay the same, which i'm not sure is what you're looking for. by offsetting activity and assignment start dates, that is Gantt chart start and the resource histogram / spreadsheet start, there are several scenarios you can take: redistribute the units in the 1st month over the remaining months of assignment (and activity), make assignment (and activity) 1 month longer, deduct the hours from the units total, etc. you may need to switch duration type to reestablish the equation: duration x units/time = units . you should also consider a level-of-effort activity type if activity durations and assignment unit totals are not known upfront.
hope this helps. best of luck
