Creating a desktop PC utility with an USB boot utility

Creating a desktop PC utility with an USB boot utility
Hi everybody
when I looked for how create an Real-Time Desktop ETS I found two ways to do it:
1. With USB create, here is the program: http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/lang/en/id/1369
2. With Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX)
With both, I been having trouble, but I could find an explanation of the error that comes up. This is the warning message that comes up: "Unable to find a USB drive. Make sure that it is connected to your computer." So I thought that the USB drive wasn't good, I changed the USB  and the same message keeps coming up. I looked for all the necesary requirements, and I have everything in order, the real time module, the CVI, and LabVIEW SP1, but I only have the evaluation version, I would like to check it first and look if it works OK.
Here are the instructions:

I hope that someone can help me. thanks.
"Everything that has a beginning has an end"

Hey anfedres,
I went ahead and deactivated by labview and labview rt installs, and I was still able to format a USB drive just fine with both the utility and MAX. My suggestion would be to try switching out the USB drives again, the smaller the better. The utility is very small, so if you have any of those small flash drives that people give out at conferences/expos/etc, you may be better served by using that rather than a 16 GB drive. Some flash drives come with built in utilities that can cause problems, so the simpler the better. You might also completely format the usb drive using windows before using our utility. The flash drive I used was completely empty.
I also wanted to make sure that you were aware of the deployment license associated with the process you are attempting:

Let me know how a different drive works out, and we can move forward from there.
Thanks,

  • Intel KMS with live usb boot

Hey. I've KMS (early start) working perfectly on an older 82845 card with all the newest updates to core (2.6.32, etc) and xf86-video-intel. However, using a larch bootable flash drive with all the same packages, I can't get KMS to engage -- early OR late start.
Is there something different about the speed or ??? with a flash drive boot?  I've been careful to ensure the .img file created from mkinitcpio had the correct hooks and the 'intel_agp i915' modules. I added the 'i915.modeset=1' to the kernel line in grub. It still boots fine with the new .img file, it just won't start KMS. Would be nice to have KMS, because there is substantial display corruption that occurs when I switch virtual terminals without KMS.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have an early 2006 intel iMac and am having the same problem with the new keyboard. Called AppleCare, who sent me to the local Apple Store after trying several minutes in vain to cure the problem.
One of the Genius's at the Apple Store pulled up Article 306893, Apple Keyboard (2007): Cannot boot to Startup Manager. This is a document that's apparently not available to the public, as I have the printed copy, but have been unable to pull it up in my searches.
The issue is some intel-based iMacs and Mac mini computers shipped prior to 2007 may not boot to the Startup Manager when holding down the Option key on the aluminum keyboard (2007).
My iMac is listed among the products affected.
The solution they offer is to follow these steps:
    1. While starting the computer, point the Apple remote at the computer and hold down the Menu button. The computer should boot into the Startup manager.
    2. Use the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons to select the desired boot volume.
    3. Once the desired boot volume is selected, press the Play / Pause button to continue booting.
Hope this helps. It works for my system. Still doesn't solve the keyboard issue but offers an acceptable workaround.

  • Failed creating Desktop PC Utility USB Drive

I'm trying to create a Desktop PC Utility USB Drive for my RT computer in MAX.  I keep getting the message shown in the attachment.  I formatted my thumb drive and I have no files in it.  Any solution?
    Solved!

Figure out the problem (had two other USB thumb drives in the computer).  I don't know why having more than one thumb drive would be an issue because MAX asks which thumb drive to format.  However, problem solved.

  • Creating a USB boot image for LabviewRT

I have installed Labview 8.2 and the "update 8.2.1" for Labview RT Standard version from the web.
I am trying to create a bootable image for a target Laptop PC, using a USB jump drive.
When I run NI-MAX and select TOOLS->RT Disk Utilities->Create Desktop PC Utility USB Drive, a popup dialog appears that says:
"This utility will reformat a USB drive with a Labview Real-Time boot USB utility for use with a USB boot-capable Desktop PC. Make sure the USB drive is connected to your computer before you continue.
Do you want to use this utility?"
Clicking on Yes, shows a dialog selection window, with a single entry ="Version 8.2", and an OK and Cancel button.
Selecting the OK button, shows an error popup titled: Measurement & Automation Explorer" with text="Unable to detect USB drives"
The jump drive is 32MB and is visible in WINDOWS Explorer.
WHY will NI-MAX not see or use this jump-drive ?
( I have tried two different jump drives from two different manufacturers)

    Hello,
Does your jump drive conform to the USB Mass Storage Device Class?  What drive letter are you using?  Did you create it by running the command line utility "subst"?
Have you tried doing this on a different computer?  Are the USB ports 1.1 or 2.0?

  • P35 Neo Questions about USB boot speed (New query)

i see it's an old topic but i have the same problem with slow USB Boot on a MSI P35 Neo2-FR mainboard.
i have tried something like 5 different USB drives and all are the same. the problem is when it's tring to boot from USB. there is some missing support for USB booting from BIOS , i don't know.
i had a BIOS from 2008 and i have updated to the latest version but nothing solved my problem.
i have tried to boot from USB with a linux live environment, windows live CD or i have tried to install windows from USB drive. all of them with very slow reading (instead of max 2-3 min loading time it takes almost 20-25min at least..).
when the system (windows) loads up the speed of reading the USB drives increse dramatically and all things gets back to normal.
with the same USB drive on several computers all the above works without any delay or very slow reading. so this i think it's the motherboard or the motherboard BIOS but i don't have a clue on how to fix this issue.
any help will be more than appreciated. thank you.

Do you use the case USB ports or the MB USB ports ? Have you tested the MB USB ports by disconnecting the case USB headers ?
Suggest you transfer a large file from the HDD to a USB device or from a USB device to the HDD and monitor the transfer speeds. Anything between 15 and 30mb/s is normal for USB2.

  • K8N Neo2 USB boot problem

Hi, I'm trying to fix my computer (it freezes on every operating system all of a sudden), and I need to use the USB boot to load Linux Live and Windows installation (both froze as well). The problem is that it'll take the USB just once in a while, and that is causing me a big loss of time to make the tests and a headache. First thing I did was memtest and I found corrupt memory, thus I replaced the DIMM. But the freezing is still there.
Do you have any hint? I know it's a double question but at least if the USB boot was working all the time it'd be a lot faster to load stuff and try to fix the problem.
    Thanks for your hints!

First thing tell us what the rest of the PC consists of.
I didn't think the rest of my hardware would matter with the USB boot problem, anyway:
    1.D BIOS
    Athlon 64 3000+
    512 mb ddr PC3200
    Geforce4 MX 440 AGP
    300W power supply
    Maxtor 250 GB IDE

  • I accidently used Disk Utility to fix a partition. I cant boot in with any USB drive. Help.

I accidentally used Disk Utility to fix a partition.  It erased it.  I desperately need to restore it.
I have an imac without a cdrom.  How do I create a bootable usb with testdisk as for some bizarre reason it seems impossible to create a bootable usb drive for osx.  I tried GParted and the ultimate boot disk that both have test disk.
I am stumped.  Why can't I boot into my imac with a usb?  I have a mac air that I just cant seem to create a usb drive with testdrive thats bootable.  I even tried rEFit but no luck.
Anyone have an idea? How do I fix my system ?

I have an imac OSX 10.8.
I tried creating a usb drive of testdisk on my mac air so that I could use it to boot into the iMAC and restore the partition table.
    I created it using:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o target.img ~/Desktop/ubcd530.iso
    dd if=./target.img.dmg of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m
It did not work.  It would not boot.  I also tried Gnome Partition tool and that did not boot either.  I need my old system as it has important data
    Any tips? Thanks!

  • Can't format HDD using Desktop PC Utility USB Drive

I'm trying to install LabVIEW RT 9.0 on a Kontron ITC-322 cPCI using the Desktop PC Utility USB Drive. The Kontron ITC-322 has a Core 2 Duo and an Intel 3100 chipset which has the IICH and an IMCH and an Intel 82571EB ethernet contorller. The HDD is a flash disk module that connects over USB and appears as a hard drive, not a flash disk.
I'm able to boot from the Desktop PC Utility configured USB Drive but when I go to format drive I get an error saying no SATA/ATA drive found. Since I had a PXI-8108 controller handy, I installed it's SATA drive on the Kontron ITC-322 and booted again from the USB boot disk and tried formating it's drive. ( I didn't care about wiping it). Again I got the same error. I went into the Kontron's BIOS and set the ATA/IDE compatibility mode from Enhanced to Compatible and go a new error. Since LabVIEW RT 9.0 was already on the controller the Kontron attempted to boot it. I got kernel error 146080 and ETS Monitor halted with error 2002.
Finally I just tried booting my SATA drive but it seems that didn't work. I had Linux on the drive and it just booted that. I never could get the GRUB to find the LabVIEW RT partition on the drive so it was never capable of booting it.In fact the only way to boot it was to use the PXI-8108's custom BIOS.
Also, the Kontron's BIOS is an American Megatrends ver.08.00.4

    Hi,
Have you looked at this RT PC requirements document? Of your components that I checked, they seemed to be compatible. I'm not sure about your hard drive though.
    Did you try this?
"If AHCI, IDE or compatibility/legacy mode isn't available or doesn't work, try RAID to get HDD recognized"
I would also recommend making a "Format Hard Drive Disk" from MAX first. Format the HDD and then try using the boot drive.
Any change when you do this instead?

The section directly above is what I need to add, anyone have a clue how to make this work?

Bill:  Can you suggest a site?  I am in the weeds here trying to get this done yesterday.  I have been reading code and trying to figure this out since yesterday morning.  I have to roll out this image to 2 dozen machines and
this is holding us back.  Any idea which site I can post to for help?
The bigger issue is that you have been given the answer to this in many different forms and, because you have no technical background, you fail to see what is being shown to you.  That is why I have repeatedly suggested that you hire a consultant.
The link to the learning material is at the top o this page.  You can also search the web for Windows consultants.
In the learning link you can also look up how to manage files. If, in the beginning you had chosen to use the learning materials you might not be in this bind.
Look up and research the FileSystemObject.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Creating a mp3 disk image with disk utility

    Hi,
I'd like to create a mp3 disk image with disk utility. In the end I would like to have a mp3 disk that plays in various stero system and macs.
But I want to add some additional files: a png file for a nice folder background of the dmg, a special image for the dmg, and some text files relating to the mp3s.
Is this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?
    Thanx for your help

Is this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?
You need to know which file systems your "various stereo systems" understand. The default file system created on a diskimage when burning is a hybrid file system- HFS+, ISO-9660 with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge.

although i ran GBX6 under 10.5.8, i do believe an intel processor is required. that means that the only complete solution would be a new computer, i'm afraid.
the best you could do is export each track as an audio file from GBi and drop them into your GBX project

My Apple desktop computer, 2.4 GHz Intel duo core, OS 10.6.8, stopped recognizing the WD My Book connected via firewire. It works fine with the USB port so it's not the drive. Help please?

It can be the bridge. It could need firmware update. or the FW ports may be an issue. LaCie seemed to invent the phrase/tip 'resetting firewire ports' due to the issues with their drive cases.
You can try an SMC Reset.
So far I have avoided name-brand and tend to see them mentioned. Often with a new OS (though you are on 10.6.8, but when 10.6 came out there was a common complaint and thread of users: FW or USB worked but not the other interface).

Hey HoustonSmith, using to much power generally means a short. Do not use this cable, the lighting cables have a history of failure; shorting out. If within one year of purchase date take it to Apple, the cable also has a one year warranty, if short is do to manufacturing flaw and not abuse Apple will replace it free! Otherwise a new cable is around $30. You could also try a reset or restore, but don't think a glitch is your problem. If you do try to restore, just remember to make backup copies of all the info / data on this iPod to your computer first, then attempt to restore. Good luck. Cheers.
