Creating a Disk Image from Compressor Fails

Hpefully some one can help me out here.
Here's whats going on and I've tried this on 2 different systems (iMac 24 inch OSX 10.9.4,Nvidia GeForce GT750M 1 GB,  3.1 Ghz i7 Processor 1 TB Fusion Drive, 16 gigs of ram & a iMac 27 Inch OSX 10.9.4 Nvidia GeForce GTX780M 4GB, 2.5 Quad-Core i7, 16 gigs of ram 1 TB Fusion Drive, both have the USB Super Drive from Apple connected to them)
Both are running Compressor 4.1.2. I'm trying to make a disk image from a Apple Pro Res 422 HQ Quicktime 29.97 DF (drop frame, NTSC) The file is big since it's HQ so it takes a while to compress. I'm using the Create DVD preset in compressor and choosing " When Done: Create DVD" then below that "Output Device: Hard Drive" Because I want to have a disk image for back up and future burning so I don't have to tie up any systems doing this again.
It get's the the very end where it has that disk burning icon come up on the dock and then a warning comes up saying that there was a "error making the disk" and then that's it. I want to be able to create a disk image. Old compressor (3.what ever) works great, takes a lot longer to compress things but at least I haven't run into this issue with it.
I've had my destination set to the internal drive's, external drives .... you name it I've tried to save it in different places. I've added a background picture, removed it, nothing seems to work ....
Please help and much appreciated if you can help me out here.
Cheers

Yes it is. This should help you.

  • Why suddenly unable to create a disk image from a CD?

I successfully created a disk image from a CD only 5 days ago. Now when I try to create a disk image from a CD (with Disk Utility) the Superdrive rumbles along for sveral minutes, while the progress bar indicates that it has reached the end of its progress.
Only after all that does a dialog box indicate:
"Unable to create "___.dmg"-Invalid Argument. "
I haven't added software but did upgrade to iTunes 6. Doubtful that could affect my abilty to create a disk image.
Would someone kindly shed some light on why this may be happening?
    Steve

Is it strange that this problem seems CD-specific?
Some CDs are copy-protected and some CDs are not copy-protected; so, no, it's not strange at all that you should be able to copy some CDs and not be able to copy others.

  • Creating a disk image from an audio-disc???

Hello guys, I need to move residence and want to minimize the volume and weight I'll need to carry.
I wanted to create disk images of all my audio discs but apparently that's not possible (at least with disk utility, trying to use the same process used with software/movies discs). Is there any way to achieve this? Or, is there any other good way to store the songs in case I needed them later?
What I'd like to do is have them stored in my external hard drive in an uncompressed, unconverted format ready to burn them back, without any loss, to a cd playable with the basic cd players in case I needed them. Or to re-import them into a iTunes. And stuff like that.

I use Toast Titanium to do this. http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html

  • Creating floppy disk images (from Disk Utility) recognized by Parallels

    Hi there,
After making the Parallels plunge last week, and installing a couple of my old OS's in it, I unearthed my old MS-DOS 6.22 disks. (remember that, boys and girls?)
With the help of my brother, I managed to export the contents onto a USB flash drive in the hopes of creating the necessary .fdd files that Parallels uses to create a virtual DOS machine.
(FYI - I already have DOSBox installed... but now with Parallels, I was looking to install the real deal)
Normally, renaming a .dmg file (created through Disk Utility) to a .fdd should force Mac OS to associate the image with Parallels, and thus allowing it to be recognized as a valid floppy image.
Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case for me. Parallels cannot recognize the disk images created as floppy drive images. Even after formatting the volume as both MS-DOS and MS-DOS (FAT 16), nothing seems to work.
I've already checked the Parallels forums, but couldn't drudge up anything. I was hoping one of the Level 3+'s here had some experience with this.
Am I missing something in the Disk Utility .dmg creation process of these files, or would I need a separate application to create a valid .img/.ima file to get this to work?
    Thanks!
    Steve

I am also having this issue. If I figure it out I'll post my solution. If anybody has had success it would be very helpful to know how they made proper images.

  • Disk Utility 'Disk Image from Folder' looses file create date?

    Hi,
I have been working on creating backups that maintain the files' create dates. I have found the following anomoly using Disk Utility.
If I create a Disk Image From Folder, the create dates of all files are changed to be the same as the last modify dates. Not what I want.
If I creat a Blank Disk Image, and then using Finder to copy the files to the Disk Image, the create dates remain unchanged.
I can then burn the backup CD's with the Disk Image and the files' create dates are maintained. So, future restore from the backup CD will contain the original files' create dates.
Does anyone know if Disk Utility's Create Disk Image from Folder is supposed to loose the files' create dates? What other file attributes are being lost? Mac OS X maintains all of these attributes, and create dates via Finder copies, I would expect the Disk Utility Create Disk Image from Folder to do the same.

To follow up on this post, I know at least part of the answer. The difference between the two becomes clearer if you read the documentation (man pages) for hdiutil and asr. Image 1 will be created in file mode, whereas image 2 will be in block mode, ie bypassing the file system. Image 1 will consist of a series of files, whereas image 2 will contain a series of blocks, mirroring the original layout of the hard disk.
Technically the latter should be faster to restore (in block mode), although Apple recommend the first procedure (see man page for hdiutil). I haven't seen any evidence that images created in block mode can be mounted or restored, although you might be able to burn such images to a optical disks if applicable.
As I've pointed out in another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1508199&tstart=0) I believe that this functionality should not be offered in disk utility, and I consider it a serious bug.

  • Unable to create a Disk Image

    Hi!
I am trying to backup my boot HD to a disk image, a sparse bundle. I have done this successfully in the past using Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper, but this time I am getting an error message in both programs — "The image creation procedure  failed". I have tried two internal HDs on my Mac Pro, and then an external Firewire HD as a target area for the disk image, and I get a same result. FInally I just tried to use OS X Disk Utility to create a disk image from scratch, and this also fails with a dialog "Unable to create name.sparsebundle, Resource Busy".
I can see there is some systemic issue here, but I don't understand what could that be. I would appreciate any wisdom on the matter, as I really have to backup my HD. Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
I'm having the same problem. Re-installing the operating system fixed it, but I think Onyx messed it up again. Still not sure what it is that is causing it.
Reverting the setting on Onyx did not fix, and I don't want to go about re-installing again.
I'm wondering if you have run Onyx on your system lately?

  • How do I create a disk image for windows 7, using a windows computer for USB bootcamp for mac?

Hi There, I have just bought a new 2013 iMac.
    Spec: 3.4 GHz intel core i5, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory , NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB Graphics with OS X 10.9.4.
How can I create a 'disk image' from a windows 7 professional 64bit installation DVD using a windows laptop with windows 7 Operating system on? I want to transfer this 'disk image' (ISO?) to a USB ready for installing windows onto my 2013 iMac using bootcamp?  I want to use bootcamp from a USB as I have no disk drive for the installation DVD on my iMac. I hope all this is clear.
    Thank you. Joe

Yes, that's correct, at least not directly. You can create a blank disk image, copy the file to the mounted disk image, then burn the image to a CD/DVD.
Open Disk Utility and select Blank Disk Image from the New menu. Provide a name, Save location, and select the image size from the drop down menu. Leave Encryptions at None and Format as read/write. Click on the Create button.
After the image file appears the "removable" disk should be automatically mounted. If not double-click on it to mount it. A "removable" disk icon will appear. Drag the file you want to place on the disk image to the "removable" disk icon. The eject the "removable" disk icon. Now select the disk image file in the DU left side list and click on the Burn icon in the DU toolbar. Be sure to have a blank disc ready.
The above is actually the "long" way to do this. A much easier way is to simply insert a blank CD or DVD into the optical drive. The Finder will pop up a dialog asking what to do. Select the option to mount on the Desktop. You will now see a disc icon on the Desktop. Drag the file you want to burn to the CD/DVD, right-click or CTRL-click on the disc icon and select Burn from the contextual menu.

  • Disk Utility reports "resource busy" and can't create an disk image

    HI,
Just succesfully updated to Mountain Lion on my MBA and iMac. No problems. A very smooth proces.
But, on my iMac the Disk Utility are not able to create new images at all! I'm not sure if this relates directly to the update, as
DU works fine on the MBA.
I have tried to create a simple disk image from a folder, sparse bundle disk images and sparse disk images - with and without encryption.
They al gave this output from DU: "Unable to create "MYDiskImage.sparsebundle." (Resource busy).
I understand from other postings on the web that others have experienced the same message from time to time, but have not seen a fix for it anywhere.
I can see the "disk iamge" in the DU window (left pane) but are not able to locate it with Finder or on the computer anywhere, but are even able to "repair the
disk image with DU, but then there is actually no disk image when trying to locate it. Very strange.

    Hi Darth,
Thanks for the suggestion. Somehow I managed to solve the issue (the question was posted in July), I  think I restarted the computer a couple of times, but it's interesting that you mention Drive Genius and Drive Pulse, as I also had that app running!
Maybe Drive Pulse was also turned of here in my process and helped to solve the issue.
    Anyhow, thanks.

  • Disk Utility fails to create encrypted disk image

When creating a disk image using 256 bit encryption and a purely numeric password longer than 13 characters the following message appears:
Unable to create "ABC.dmg." (error -60008)
the error happens upon typing the 14th consecutive number into the Password field. I have created images under the same conditions in the past, Not sure if this is caused by Lion.

Looks like one of the drives is bad.
While it passed being zeored with Disk Utility, it failed about 15 minutes into a 'Certify' using SoftRAID.
Now waiting on a replacement drive from Newegg.

  • Can i create a disk image of my Imac 27 triple boot from disk utility: lion 10.8.3, win 7 and snow 10.6.8

I have created a well working triple boot system on my Imac 27, I7, 16GB, 3.4.Triple boot: Lion 10.8.3, Snow leopard 10.6.8 and windows 7.
They all work great. I would like to find the simplest way to make a image or a backup of the entire system.
I am thinking of creating a new image from disk utility image option. This from the main 2 To hitachi disk. The image option at the top should create a global image of the entire triple boot. I am not shure if this is possible.  The differential/incremental option is not necesary. I can deal with that.
But, In case the disk utility option will not work, which software would aloud diferential/incremental backup for each partition
A software solution that would babkup all my partitions.
A single all in one image would be great but is that possible?
Any suggestion: please d'ont talk about vm solution or other subject like that. I am looking for a backup solution for my tripleboot...
    Thanks

There are a few problems here, first Mountian Lion won't install on a 2006 MacBook, it diesn't meet the minimum specifications. http://support.apple.com/kb/SP654
Secondly you shouldn't install something purchased under one apple id onto another persons computer.

  • Disk Utility create encrypted disk image hangs

I'm trying really, really hard to backup my data but apple is not making it easy for me.
I need my files encrypted for an offline backup. Time machine only allows home folder to be encrypted, and due to my home folder being on my SSD drive I cannot fit my files all in there, not by a long shot.
Using Disk Utility, I choose "new disk image from folder", and select "read only", 256-bit encryption. Some of the folders worked. However some will just hang for hours on "Creating Image, copying...". I can see at the destination the dmg file has stopped incrementing larger. It has reached the full size of the folder approximately. Does apple fail at some file types? I already ran disk repair several times to no avail. I don't know what else to try, it just doesn't want to work. All I want is an encrypted backup, that any OSX install can retrieve without any special software involved. Sometimes I'll get a very unhelpful error message "Operation not supported". Whatever that is supposed to mean. Google was no help so hoping for some insights here.

Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

  • Unable to create a disk image for mass deployment or to restore on other

*Restore Failure. Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagedscanned/scanned for restore.*
I setup the master as I want it. I've booted from another drive and used Disk Utility to create a new image from Folder. (If I try to create a new image from drive, I get an error that the disk is in use.) I've run the checksum. I've run the scan image for restore. All process with out any errors.
The error mentioned above occurs when I try to restore the image to another computer.
Has anyone else been able to make a master image for deployment without using Leopard Server?

    Hello,
I am also getting a similar error, but not trying to create an image, but rather reading one I created before upgrading to Leopard. I was having some HD trouble (power surge during install of Quicktime 7.3) that put my HD in any unstable state (resistant to Disk Utility/Disk Warrior,) but fortunately, I'd cloned the HD w/ SuperDuper (anticipating possible trouble during the upgrade.) I then made a disk image of the BOOTCAMP partition on another drive. Now, after re-formatting the HD, installing Leopard and partitioning for Bootcamp, I am unable to scan the image before restoring the disk image to the HD. It might be a FAT32 thing, but I don't think so.
The error is: Unable to scan "disk0s3.dmg". (Invalid argument)
    The disk utility log is:
    2007-11-08 20:33:43 +0100: Scanning image “disk0s3.dmg”
    2007-11-08 20:33:53 +0100: cannot scan read/write images.

Trying to create encrypted disk images via Disk Utility on my iMac (i7 8GB) is super-slow in 10.8.   It worked quite fast in 10.7, but now it's super-slow and doesn't even seem to ever finish.

  • Can a use a partitioned external hard drive to create a disk image? I tried, doesn't seem to work using disk manager.

Can a use a partitioned external hard drive to create a disk image? I tried, doesn't seem to work using disk manager.

OK, it's very bad computing to use a backup disk for anything but a backup. The reason being is if/when the HD crashes you will have lost not only all your backup but the data files. While I commend you for wanting redundant backup, you really need separate EHDs for doing so. Format each EHD using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID parttition. When you connect, OS X will ask if you want to use that drive as a Time Machine backup drive, select yes and then let it backup. On the second EHD format the same way however do not use TM as a backup, this time I'd suggest an app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of the internal HD. Leave both EHDs connected and TM will backup new or changed files automatically on a hourly basis. The clone you will need to set to backup on the schedule you want. For example I have my SuperDuper EHD set to backup only changed or updated files at 2AM every day.
The advantage of a clone is that if the computers internal HD crashes you can boot from a clone and continue working, TM will not do that but it's great for keeping an archive of all files. So if you want a version of a file from many months ago, TM will help you locate and restore it.
