Creating a duplicate library in a different audio format (MP3)

My iTunes library is in Apple Lossless format, but as that takes up a fair amount of storage space, I can't store as many songs as I'd like on my iPod. Therefore, I'd like to create a mirror library in MP3 format.
I'm trying to determine the easiest way to do that. The not-so-easy way seems to be to duplicate the entire library, then in the duplicate library, use the Advanced/Convert Selection to... command to convert to MP3, then delete all the Lossless songs from that library (doing the conversion in the original library and having two versions of every song would seem confusing when you want to play stuff). My library is currently stored on an external drive, which works fine.
Am I crazy, is there a more straightforward way to do this? Is it possible to export the actual song files while converting them at the same time?
Thanks.

There is a way to sort your library by recording type. In the main iTunes window, right click (control/click) on the column headings, then select "Kind", then click on the Kind column to sort by recording type.
Still, wish somebody would answer our question!

  • When I imported from IPhoto to Aperture did I create a duplicate library?

    Background:
I am new to Mac and all its applications having moved from a crashed PC and Picassa to an IMAC and Aperture. I got the machine in December of 2011 and all applicatiopns and the OS are up to date.
Apple store ported over all my files and the pics went to IPhoto. As soon as I got home with no knowledge and my brand new machine I downloaded Aperture.
I assume I was prompted by Aperture to import all my Iphotos but I don't remember how this was done. Since I am so ignorant about Macs I assume that I didn't do anything other than follow the prompts. My 1TB drive is almost full and I was surfing for solutions when I found a post about duplicate libraries.
    Questions:
1 Not knowing how I got to where I am, how do I determine if I have seperate Libraries? I assumed thet both IPhoto and Aperture shared the same Library but I think that is a wrong assumption.
2 What is the procedure for deleting the Iphoto Library if I do have a duplicate Library?
3 I have a gazillion pics in the trash due to multiple imports. I assumed that I was only moving pointers to the trash and that all these duplications were not true duplicates, I now think that this is a wrong assumption. If these are indeed duplicates then dumping trash will free up a lot of space ?
4 Is there any way to globally eliminate all duplicates?

    Blayne,
before you do any restructuring of your libraries, I would recommend to update your software (MacOS X, Aperture, and iPhoto) to the latest versions. Lauch the AppStore to see, if any updates are waiting. There have been some important bugfixes in the past month.
Also make sure you have a current and working backup of all your libraries.
assume I was prompted by Aperture to import all my Iphotos but I don't remember how this was done. Since I am so ignorant about Macs I assume that I didn't do anything other than follow the prompts.
There are essentially three different ways to import an iPhoto library to Aperture. It will depend on the Import settings you choose, where your images are stored:
When you import the iPhoto library using: " File > Import > iPhoto Library" you will see an Import Panel like this:
If you selected  Store Files "In the Aperture Library", then all your images from iPhoto are now duplicated in the Aperture Library package, and you can safely delete your iPhoto Library after backing it up.
If you selected  Store Files "In their current location", then the master image files of your Aperture images are still in their original location - in the iPhoto Library - and you must not delete the iPhoto Library.
If you selected  Store Files "Choose", and selected a folder, then your master image files are currently in some folder outside the Aperture library, but not in the iPhoto Library.
Since you do not remember, what your settings were, I think it would be the safest, to consolidate all your images into the Aperture library, whereever they are now. This will give you a tidy starting point for your future work. To consolidate:
Select the "Photos" View in the Library Inspector panel, and select all your images in the browser.
Then select "File > Consolidate Masters" from the main Aperture menu bar.
This will move all master image files into the Aperture library. Compare the size of your Aperture library before and after. Then you can delete the iPhoto library.
I have a gazillion pics in the trash due to multiple imports. I assumed that I was only moving pointers to the trash and that all these duplications were not true duplicates, I now think that this is a wrong assumption. If these are indeed duplicates then dumping trash will free up a lot of space ?
After consolidating you can empty the Aperture Trash. Thedisk space will only be freed, after you empty the trash on your Desktop as well.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • Supporting Different Audio Formats in Director

    Hello,
I have a desktop Director application that acts as a search
engine for audio libraries. It allows a user to listen to audio
files of different formats (AIFF,MP3,WAV). I am using the internal
sound object in Director to play these files. Everything worked
fine until last month when the client decided to re-encode their
entire AIFF library to use Big Endian encoding. Now the Director
    app cannot play those files.
I can make the application play them if I use a Quicktime
object. However this would require that the machine have quicktime
installed. It is not an issue on a Mac but on a PC it is because I
don't want to force an installation of another application to make
    mine run.
My question is, are there any xtras out there that can play
high fidelity audio and work both on mac and pc platforms?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

None. s40 phones are not capable of this AFAIK. They are only able to run Java apps.

  • Duplicate /library/ made by mistake

I need some help. My 70+ year old mom called in a panic, as it seems she has created a duplicate /library/ folder. Since this has happened she can log into her account (she has admin permissions), but can not connect to the internet, email or anything else. I am guessing that since there are two /library/ folders it can't locate items to run these. I am 200 miles away trying to troubleshoot for her. What can I do, short of reinstalling the OS? Any suggestions would be great.
Her system: iMac G5 intel, OS 10.4.11
    Appreciate your help in advance.

I need some help. My 70+ year old mom called in a panic, as it seems she has created a duplicate /library/ folder. Since this has happened she can log into her account (she has admin permissions), but can not connect to the internet, email or anything else.
you may have missed diagnosed the problem. Not being able to do e-mail is a symptom of a bad ~/Library because this is where Mac OS saves your mail.
What she mean by not being able to do Internet? I would think you could do Internet but no bookmarks.
Nor would your desktop look the same. Perhaps she is saying she cannot Find the internet browser. This would be a symptom of the a bad user library. It is possible for the user to rename their library folder. It is not possible for the administrator to rename the System Library folder from the GUI interface without some clever use of the getinfo command. Just because your administrator does not mean you can go and change system files without doing some administrator type things. The administrator does not own system files. The system owns system files.
Is so, there is /Library and ~/Library. Which one was change? ~/Library is the more likely. For example, /Users/mac/Library
you will note ~ means the current users directory path. For example. /Users/mac
There is a mistake with these commands.
The commands are missing a sudo and there is the matter of the /.
There is also the matter of two library folders. There is one library folder /Library and there is a another library folder in the user's account /Users/mac/Library. Which one are we talking about?
But my reading of the problem was that it was the user's Library account. If it was the system's library account that is another problem, which I was not addressing. I don't think the system would run at all if it was this one however.
And you need to make any changes to /Library from a single user mode.
You need to get into single use mode for steps one and two that are listed below.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://www.securemac.com/macosxsingleuser.php
Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
    1) You can change the password on an account. ( Do you know Unix. You are in a Unix single user console. ) The setup commands you need should be listed on the screen. For Mac OS 10.4.11, the commands are:
    # Type the follow two instructions to accessing the startup disk in read/write:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /
    pwd
    ls -lF L*
    mv -i Library Library_new
    mv -i "Library 1" Library
This commands are for a user account...
run these commands from an administrator account that is not the problem account.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    cd /var/root
    pwd
    sudo ls -lF L*
    sudo mv -i Library Library_new
sudo mv -i "Library 1" Library
It is a good that people are reviewing these commands. It is easy to make a mistake.
Than here is what these commands maybe:
    cd is change directory
pwd is a print working directory
    ls is list
    sudo is Super user do
    mv is move
for cryptic comments you can always uses the manual command which is man. for example:
    man mv

if video0 is not created, i can suppose you're using the wrong module for your device. You should check if VendorID/DeviceID of the device match the VendorID/DeviceID of the module you're using.

  • Mixed audio formats

Does anyone know how much more difficult it is for FCP to have different audio formats in the timeline?
I'm guessing it takes more processing to have compressed formats like .mp3 in there, than to mix, say, .aif and .wav.

I'm still a bit new to the video world. I forget that FCP just renders all that stuff.
In my more familiar audio environments, I'm used to avoiding conversion when possible.

  • When clicking an audio clip on the timeline in Premiere Pro CC 2014, it duplicates it on a different track and makes it impossible to work.

I'm experiencing a disturbing issue as it actually prevents me to do the work in Premiere. I will put as much info as possible:
    1) Project started on a different computer (the editor), PC with Premiere Pro CC,
    2) Now opened on my Imac with Premiere Pro CC 2014,
    3) I am not editing, simply trying to move audio clips on different tracks to export audio tracks only,
    THE ISSUE:
    1) Here is my timeline:
    2) When I select an audio clip to highlight it, Premiere creates a duplicate on a different track:
Note that the clip highlighted in the previous screen cap is the duplicate and I didn't click it, Premiere highlights it as soon as it is duplicated.
    3) When I click out of the timeline or scroll up or down on the timeline, the duplicates disappear. However, when I try to move the original clips, it doesn't do anything, they are stuck in place.
    ANTICIPATED ANSWERS:
    1) You work on 2 different computers with 2 different versions of Premiere Pro CC, what do you expect? --> The amazing thing about Adobe CC is that it shouldn't be an issue and now I have to deal with it in this way,
    2) Try and save an updated version of your project from your computer. --> Already done that.
Thank you for your help. I usually use the customer support chat but I am on the other side of the globe and it is now closed. This issue prevents me to work so I need to solve it quickly.
    Kind regards,
    Aurelien

This sounds to me like it could be a graphics related problem are you on the latest driver. Something else you could try, start a new project and import the one from the PC into that rather than directly opening it in the MAC

  • When syncing multiple Google calendars to iPad, switching event to different calendar on iPad creates a duplicate in Google. Ideas?

When syncing multiple Google calendars to iPad, switching event to different Google sub-calendar using iPad creates a duplicate in Google.
Using Google account with the Exchange setup on an iPad mini. iOS up to date. I have a secondary calendar in my Google account for some appointments, and when I create the event on the iPad and it defaults to my main Google calendar, changing the event to the secondary calendar caused the following:
    1) at first, the event totally disappeared from my iPad. Scary! Reappeared when I went into Gcal on the web, opened the event to edit, and re-saved. Phew.
    2) Failing to re-create error #1, I switched a new event from primary to secondary calendar, and it then appears correct on iPad, but is duplicated on the web. The duplicate remains even after deleting the changed event on iPad, refreshing Gcal, etc.
Just curious if anyone else is having this problem or has discovered a workaround or fix.

When you open the Calendar app, tap the button at the top-left corner (Calendars).  That should reveal all the calendars you have available, and you can select/ un-select any or all of them.
If you don't see your 2nd GMail calendar listed, go into Settings/ Mail/ (account name) and make sure you've turned the calendar ON for this account.

  • Want to create a "duplicate" iTunes library.

I currently own 2 external 1TB hard drives. I am running iTunes directly from one since my laptop memory is very small. However, I have no backup in case of failure. I would like to duplicate my iTunes setup on my 2nd drive but I don't just want to do a "backup". I would like to be able to run iTunes from either harddrive so essentially I need to know how to create a duplicate iTunes setup on my 2nd hard drive.
Then, even if one drive entirely failed, I could just run iTunes off the other one seamlessly. Also, I can take one drive home and use it on my home PC. Obviously, over time there would be small changes occurring to either library but I would handle these manually, duplicating on one what I did on the other.

Organize the iTunes library from within iTunes and then create a duplicate of the entire iTunes folder on the second drive. The library can be moved between computers, but iTunes Store authorization won't be moved automatically and rented movies can't be played on other computers.

  • How do I duplicate the exact playlists from my iphone 4th gen to my new ipod 4th gen 64gb?  So far I've created a new library for it, duplicated all the apps, books

I'v been using an iphone 4 (16gb) for a year now, and have just got an ipod touch 4gen, 64gb.  I created a new library for this, and most of what I have managed to transfer everything onto the ipod touch.  However, although all my music has transferred, the playlists have not.  Do I have to transfer them manually?  That is, creating every playlist again, which would be a nuisance since I have 48 playlists and almost 250 pieces.  All the music have been bought from itunes.
What I plan to use the ipod for is mainly for books, magazines and itunes U podcasts.  Most other apps and music will be the same on both iphone and ipod.  Both are under my same apple id.  Please help, 'cos I've been searching for an answer on the internet and can't really find one.  Everything else has transferred expect the playlists.

    - Go to settings>Store and sign out and sign into your account.
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

  • Creating a new library

I have a question about creating a new library by holding the shift button and starting iTunes. What exactly does this do?
What I’m hoping will happen is that it will allow me to remap the location of my iTunes music folder without actually creating a new folder of music.
I have a hard drive connected to a router and can access and stream my music wirelessly. I want to sync via a wired connection but my computer recognizes the drive as a Z drive wirelessly and an F drive wired.
If I create a new library by the shift start method can I just set my location for the F drive in the advance setting and use that drive to sync my iPod and then go back to the other library for streaming wirelessly? Without creating a new music file?
I have over 300 gigs of music and basically don’t want a duplicate 300 gig file on my external drive. I just want to be able to setup iTunes so I can select which path I use to get to the same music folder….I think this is done via creating a new library.
Thanks all….I’ve be done a ton of research to sort all this out but this one thing is escaping me.

You can have as many library files as you want and have them point to the same files.
Just make sure the copy when adding to itunes library is turned OFF.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26579
It says itunes 3 and 4 but still works in itunes 8.
Also - when using multiple libraries, the itunes preferences never change. So make sure you have the path for the itunes library set correctly right after you open a different library. I wish apple would have an options to let preferences be different for different library files.

  • Merge Library Fails - Claims Duplicate Library

I am attempting to merge to Libraries. When I select the newer library as the file to import into the older Library I get an error message stating: The library could not be imported because it is a duplicate of the library currently running. When in fact they are not the same libraries. The names are different and there are altered images as well as new images.
I tried repairing both Libraries. Each Library are on different drives.

I'm having the same problem Michael reported (running Aperture 3.2.2 on 27" iMac with Lion 10.7.2 or Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.2).
J.F.'s response looked hopeful although it was a bit vague on some details.
I tried various steps (see below), and nothing resolved the problem.
HAS ANYONE WITH THIS ISSUE FIGURED OUT A SOLUTION?
I had made a copy of my iMac aperture library to a mobile drive.
I then updated the iMac library and wanted to merge those changes back into the library copied onto the mobile drive. It doesn't work: on my iMac I get the error that the libraries are duplicates (NOT true!).
Building on J.F.'s info, I tried a few things in vain (starting with two originally-identical libraries: original iMac aperture library [modified after copying to mobile drive], and mobile aperture library that is a copy of the original iMac aperture library copied onto my mobile drive before I made some further mods to the iMac aperture library):
    * All on the iMac: option-click Aperture icon on iMac and select to create new (empty) library (on iMac hard drivez), then copy over DataModelVersion.plist from this new (empty) library into mobile library; open mobile library and merge into original iMac library: SAME ERROR
    * iMac+macbook pro #1: move mobile library drive to Macbook Pro and open there (even modified one image with an added caption), then moved mobile library drive back to iMac and open there and try to merge in original iMac library: SAME ERROR
    * iMac+macbook pro #2: option-click on Aperture icon on macbook pro and select to create new (empty) mobile library (on mobile drive!), then move mobile drive back to iMac and on iMac copy over DataModelVersion.plist from new (empty) library on mobile drive to original mobile library; open this original mobile library and merge in iMac library: SAME ERROR.
    Looking for help!
    Regards,
    Colin

    Hi,
Error 7 is when a router or the connection to the router is broken in some way.
Some devices have features such as Denial Of Service protection (DoS) that cut a particular Internet Port when it thinks too much data is coming (Presuming it is an attack.)
iChat 5 in Leopard is not capped by the System Preferences > Quicktime Streaming speed (which we used to suggest was set at 1.5Mbps)
It now sees your whole Connection speed and your Upload may be much faster than this.
Your Download is likely to be much faster. However iChat will tend to operate at the lower figure of your Upload.
    DoS features are threshold based.
You may now be bumping in to this Threshold where you were not before.
SPI (Stateful packet Inspection) does a different job but has the same effect when it is overloaded by the speed of the data.
If you have either of these features, turn them Off (Disable them)

  • Creating a new library from a DVD Burn library

I have my entire library of photos on my iMac in iPhoto 6.0.6. I recently spent quite a bit of time cleaning up what had been a rather messy, unorganized, photo library. My organizational method consisted of consolidating old film rolls which were inherited from original imports that were in different folders by moving groups of photos into single "film rolls" for older years and making fewer rolls for the last few years. I then went back through and corrected photo dates for a bunch of images that were scanned in, etc. I downloaded Keyword Manager, which I like a lot, and applied keywords to every photo in my collection. I also deleted a bunch of old photos which were too similar to better shots or simply not worth keeping. Once I finished all of this I had my new library consisting of 1892 pictures, which I hoped to backup and allow to serve as a "gold master copy" of all of my photos to date. In browsing the database in Finder, I noted that there were a lot of images in the "Original" folders that were not in the library. Some of these were images I had deleted in the library. (I know better than to do anything through the finder other than browse. I know that to maintain integrity of the library it is necessary to only perform actions through iPhoto.) I did a database rebuild and asked iPhoto to recover orphaned files which did nothing. I really wanted this database to be in pristine condition since I was using it as my master copy, but could not figure out how to do away with old unwanted images in the "originals" folders. I went ahead and created a DVD library with "Share -> Burn", and voila, the new iPhoto Library that was created on the DVD appeared to be "clean" with only the 1892 pictures in my viewable library existing in the Originals folder. OK, so far so good. I then took the DVD I had burned and attempted to replicate my library on my iBook which had a clean install of iLife '06 on it. When I launched iPhoto with the DVD in place it showed me an empty hard drive library and the burned library from the DVD. At first I attempted to just copy individual Film Rolls from the DVD to the local library. While this worked in bring the images over, the keywords became all jumbled. The resulting photos would have keywords attached which did not belong to them and were different from what was on the DVD. I then deleted the iBook library and tried copying the entire iPhoto Library folder from the DVD to the iBook via the Finder. When I relaunched iPhoto, presto all the photos were in my local library with keywords, film rolls and other metadata intact. However in browsing the library I came across a few photos which would cause iPhoto to crash when I tried to edit them. This was a consistent behavior on specific images. Reading through the forums I came across the color profile bug and through testing verified that this was not the problem. Meanwhile back on the iMac I could edit the photos in question with no problem. I verified that the image had not been corrupted during the DVD burn as well. The files are identical between the iMac and the iBook. I know this is a long drawn out post, but if anybody has read this far, here are my questions ...
    1) What is the best way to go about creating a "clean" database with internal integrity after a doing a lot of edits and metadata changes? Shouldn't the burn to DVD do what I want?
    2) How come when I copied subsets of my library over to a new machine from the DVD, the keywords seemed to get all jumbled? Is it a matter of indexing them? If I added all the keywords to an empty library before copying the images over, would it work? Is there not a way to just copy portions of a DVD library into another library?
    3) Any ideas on the crash while attempting to edit problem? The image will load as a thumbnail, and then briefly flas the full size image, before iPhoto crashes and pops up a dialog asking if I want to restart it.
    Thanks for staying with me!

Problems solved with iPhoto Manager's rebuild function! Thanks to Brian Webster of Fat Cat Software. Great program!

In most converters today it is possible to apply color curves. Will it remain as it always was or we can expect this feature in LR3? I understand that could be nicely done in Photoshop, but I'm sure the feature would be useful. Thanks.
