Creating a Family Tree

Hello, I'm new to iWork and I'd like to create a tree, with at least just boxes and lines. How would I do this? Just use the rectangle and line tools, or is there an easier, more organized way? Or alternatively, should I just use another program entirely, and if so, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

Sure, you could do it with text boxes, pictures & lines, but I think it would be so much easier to use a dedicated genealogy program. The best known for the Mac is Reunion, but it may be more than you're willing to spend. Try a search on MacUpdate or VersionTracker for genealogy for shareware choices. I know there are a couple - Family 1.0 & Family Tree come to mind.

  • Broderbunds Family Tree Maker

Would someone be as kind as to help me convert a file?
I used to have Broderbunds Family tree maker. I made an extensive family tree.
I then exported the family tree as a Gedcom file (i think that is what it was called.)
I purchased Reunion for OS X.
I imported the GedCom file and saved as a Reunion 8 family tree file.
I then threw away my Broderbund Family Tree Marker install disc.
BUT THEN my hard disc crashed.
The last back up of my family tree was in the Classic broderbund Family tree application NOT in Reunion 8 for OS x.
Is there any one out there who would be willing to
a, except my email and attachment.
    b. open it in Broderbund Classic Family tree maker.
    c. export it as a GenCom
    d. email it back to me.
so I can import it into Reunion and not have to start from scratch?
That would be a hugely appreciated favor.
    Thanks

was able to import after creating new family tree file

  • Create family tree

    hello,
i want to create a visual family tree so i looked for softwares that do that and found that there is no software that i can use with htmldb.
does anybody know how can i do that in htmldb ?
does anybody know of a good and simple software that will export the family tree so i can import it easily to htmldb ?
    thanks

    1) Data File Format
One possible format is GEDCOM. (GEDCOM stands for Genealogical Data COMmunications. http://www.math.clemson.edu/~rsimms/genealogy/ll/gedcom55.pdf ) Most if not all Genealogy software can generate that file format.
A new format is GedML. It combines the format a GEDCOM with XML. At this point in time it is not as widely supported as GEDCOM is.
    2) Database Tables
You should model the data such that you have a PERSON table and a FAMILY table with foreign keys from FAMILY to PERSON.
    3) Load Data File
Write a procedure to process the data file from #1 and populate the tables in #2.
    4) Family Tree Representation
Create a Navigational Shared Component of type tree to display the family tree.

  • Opening PDF family tree file

I have created a one-page (oversize) PDF file of my family tree using FamilyTreeMaker 2012, which runs on my laptop whose OS is W7.  The resultant file can be opened in Adobe Reader (11.0.2), and all the information is visible.  However, when I copy that file to my pc, which runs XP, the Adobe Reader (same version) does not open the file properly - only a very small part of the information is visible (the title and a small part of the border, which I guess is the start of the file), and a dialogue box tells me that an internal error has ocurred.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this happens?  I have no other issues with Adobe Reader on my PC.

How are you copying the file, exactly?

  • Family Tree Maker compatibility with MacBook Pro upgrades

Blessings to those who are able to reply with possible answers.   I am sorry....but I have spent days working on getting my two USB ports to work also.  I basically use the USB ports for a wireless mouse and various flashdrives/memory sticks.  I have a MacBook Pro 2011 Snow Leopard 10.6.8  I have tried software update, SMC and PRAM resets, battery reset, hardware test, creating a new user account....and browsing and reading numerous discussion boards.....awgh!  I have stopped short of using my install DVD (fear of loosing data), upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion (some fear of loosing an application that might not be compatible  FAMILY TREE MAKER 2010  19.2.1.241), contacting an Apple Store (AppleCare or whatever--live 2 hours away + fear of expense), and of course, trashing the laptop.  Does anyone out there have any possible solutions?   I see I am not alone.  --A frustrated first-time Apple products owner.

Quote below from the Family Tree site:
    System Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.5 or later, including OS X Lion (10.7)
    Intel-based Mac
    DVD Drive
All online features require Internet access.
Since Mountain Lion has not been released, there is no mention of compatibility.

  • Family Tree Web Widget

Is there a HTML widget that can be plugged into iWeb that will allow a person to display their family tree?
    Thanks.

What format and where is the family tree located? What application, if any, did you use to create it?

  • How do I build a family tree on macbook pro

Any suggestions/recommendations on how to build a family tree on my MacBook Pro? Should I use Numbers or Pages? I am used to using Window based programs. Not interested in paying $100 for a template.
I am starting with my grandparents, then their 8 children (my aunts and uncles), then my generation (cousins), then our children, and 1 more generation. Would like to add birth/death/married dates, and possiblly geographical info.
I appreciate your help and time - thank you.

Best of all would be an application designed for the purpose, such as (for example) MacFamilyTree, but you can make a mock family tree using cells in Excel or Numbers.

  • I have created a family recipe book in iBooks - can I print it using iPhoto's print service?

I have created a family recipe book in iBooks - can I print it using iPhoto's print service? I don't want to print it on our home printer - I want to print multiple copies for family members through the Apple iPhoto book printing service.  Can anyone help me please?

There is no Apple print service for iBooks, and iPhoto can also only print photo books created in iPhoto.
Print your iBook to pdf. Then you have several option:
Save the pdf to a thumbsdrive/stick  and take it to the nearest print shop close to your home.
Search online for "self publishing" services available in your country.
Recreate your book as an iPhoto Book. This will be a lot of work, since iPhoto's templates are more suitable for Picture books than books with lots of formatted text. To speed things up, you could use "Preview" to export the pages of your book as jpegs (high quality, at least 300 dpi) and add themas full-page photos to a new PhotoBook. This can be sent to apple for printing.
But the first two options would be much less trouble and probably be less expensive.

  • What has caused an app I purchased (Family Tree Maker for Mac) and currently have installed, to disappear from the Mac Store. Does this mean it is no longer sold?  If so, how will I get update notices or re-download if needed?

I purchased and installed Family Tree Maker for Mac from the App Store about 6 months ago.  I heard that possibly a new version was coming, though I had not received any update notice.  I went to the App Store and it no longer shows the app, either as available for purchase or as an app I have previously purchased.  So I can't get any information on the app, support, etc..  How can an app I have purchased disappear from the purchased list???  How can I get update information or support links? (contacted FTM website and phone support and they said if I bought my program from App store, I have to get update information there).....the Update Info button in my program is actually greyed out!!  So the program I bought doesn't even have the normal update link!!  I thought one of the advantages of App Store purchase was being able to redownload the program in the unlikely event it was lost....ie: no need to worry about having the install CD.  So now I only have my installed, operating copy and no way to reinstall if it crashes due to corrupt data, etc.!!  Not a happy result from an App Store purchase!  And I must say the circular references in the support link are frustarting...apparently there is NO live support for the App Store itself!

Thanks for THAT tip: iTunes acct. history DOES show my (few) Mac app purchases, buried in with my MANY iPhone and iPad apps!  So I CAN prove I bought it (7 months ago, not 6), but you wouldn't know it from the App Store app on my Mac!  But that does leave a few other ?'s hanging: like how could I download it again, or check for updates (as I said, the version installed has the "update" button greyed out!  Ancestry.com (who sells it online and support it for other buyers said update info for App Store purchasers comes through the App Store.
I may just be out of luck with this because after 7 months of ownership, they (Ancestry) just replaced FTM with a new version (Family Tree Maker for Mac2) that is NOT an upgrade (though prior owners get $4.00 off on a $52.00 purchase!!).  I'll probably just plump for that....direct from Ancestry.com...and give up on the Mac App Store, because the new version reportedly has major enhancements in sync-ing your family history record between your computer and the cloud program available online.  Genealogy software, like everything else is migrating to the cloud, but one really does need a resident program on their device because you're often collecting data "in the field" in libraries, historical archives, cemeteries, etc. where you really can't get online in many cases.  Fortunately, more and more of the source data is coming online, so more and more can be done from home!

  • Creating a KD Tree and only sorting the points once for each axis

So right now I have some code for creating a KD Tree (2-Dimensions) but I am sorting the x and y values for the node each time I create a new node. Then I am taking the median, setting that as the nodes point, and passing on the left half and right halves of the remaining array to their respective children. I am using Arrays.Sort which I believe takes O(n log(n)) time per sort (once per node), but I have been reading a lot of stuff that states you can get the median in linear time so that the total build time is O(n log(n)). Unfortunately I am having difficulty understanding how. Here is a snippet of an explanation I found.
Each node has both x-list (ordered in x-coord.) and y-list (ordered in y-coord.)
Each pi in x-list and y-list is linked to each other.
Both x-list and y-list can be built in linear time using the two lists of its parent.
Thus total time to build all x-lists and y-lists is:
    T1 (n) = O(n) + 2T1 (n/2) = O(n log n).
Since each splitting line can be found in O(1) time (via sorted lists), and there are n − 1 splitting lines in a kd-tree,
Thus total time to find all splitting lines is
    T2 (n) = (n − 1) · O(1) = O(n).
    Hence, total prepossessing time
= T1 (n) + T2 (n) = O(n log n).My question is, how can I build the arrays in linear time at each node? I have tried working it out on paper for the past few hours but lets say I sort the array using X first and I know that indices 0 - median will be on the left, however even if I had sorted the array by Y also, there is zero guarantee that all the points I need from x[0-median] will be in y[0-median]. They will obviously be included in x[0-median] but they will be sorted by x and not y, forcing me to resort at every single node.
    Any idea?

Any idea?So for example, you have 5 points and you sort them by x and y coordinates in two separate arrays:
    x-list: 6 1 4 3 2 5
    y-list: 6 5 1 2 3 4
Now you want just the points to the right of 4:
    x-list: 3 2 5
    y-list: 5 2 3
Create the x-list by iterating from the midpoint to the end.
Add each element in the x-list to a set..
Iterate through the y-list from left to right:
If the point in the y-list is contained in the set, add it to the new y-list.
This creates the arrays in linear time while keeping the points sorted. It does iterate over twice as many points in the y-list as needed though.

  • How to create a decision tree in ABAP (in SAP or not, and how????)

    Hello,
I have to create a decision tree which has to be called within a BAPI.
This tree finally has to return 1 single value.
Can you tell me what's the best solution for this ?
Should I do this with abap, or should I call a webapplication which provides this tree for me ?
It would be great if you could provide some example-code for me.
    Kind regards,
    Gert-Jan

I am not sure I understood what you meant by decision tree. If you are simply talking about arriving at an answer based on one or more inputs, then it is a simple IF ELSEIF ELSE statements or CASE statements.
Can you please elaborate/give example of what you mean by decision tree?
