Creating a film roll

I had backed up all my earlier photos to dvd and removed them from my hard drive. Then I got an external drive and decided to re-import them to iphoto6
(some had been from 4 & 5) they re-imported but all to one big library without any film rolls, when I try to group them and create a roll from file menu it (create film roll) is grayed out. How can I create new film rolls?

Gee ---
this problem with not being able to create a new film roll (unless you have all the years in the library checked) has been going around since at least 2002. DUMB DUMB DUMB interface. It is 2007 and it is STILL HAPPENING. I thought is was my new camera (having only had the problem since getting it in Feb '07), but now realize it is not about the camera, but about the iPhoto IF. SIX looooonnnnng phone calls later with Apple Care, a complete reinstall of iPhoto, and rebuild (BY HAND) of all 10,000+ photos, and still it happens. Not one of the Apple Care people knew anything about it, until the "senior specialist" (the 6th iPhoto "expert" I spoke with) looked on the discussion strings.

YESSSSSS! Making sure that all the year folders were checked seemed to do the trick. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge

You'll be more likely to get a quick and applicable answer if you ask in the iPhoto forums rather than here in the iTunes forum.
    Good luck.

  • Creating new film roll

I'm trying to create a new film roll by selecting several photos from an existing roll. I read the help directions that says under file to select "create film roll", however this is not allowing me to select this function on the dropdown menu. any suggestions?

Is there an x beside the word "Library" at the top of the Source Pane? Click the little disclosure triangle so that you can see the year-based smart albums, and make sure that each of those is selected. Then the x will disappear, and you should be able to create a film roll.
    Regards.

  • Need help creating new film roll

I followed all the instruction in the Help section and still can not create a new film roll--it's grayed out and I am unable to click on it. What is it that I am doing wrong? Please help!

Are all the Year-based Smart Albums checked?
Beside the word Library in the Source (or left-hand) is a wee disclosure triangle. Click on it and you’ll see the Year-based Albums. Are they all checked?

  • Creating new film rolls

Somehow all of the roll divisions were deleted from my iphoto library. I'm going back to try and reestablish them and reorganize my photos, but when I select a group of photos and try to create a new film roll under the file menu, the option is not highlighted. I tried to create a new roll before selecting photos, but the option is still not highlighted. Any ideas about what could be causing this?

First off: Is the View Menu -> Film Rolls item checked?
To create Film Rolls you must have the entire Library available. So, all the years under the word Library much be checked, plus you must have at least one pic selected.

  • Create Film Roll - greyed out

I wish to create some Film Rolls, to better organize my photos....
As the title indicates the option under File 'Create Film Roll' is greyed out.
    As extra info:
I have checked that all ticks are set under Library, no entry in the search box bottom right, and no filter bottom left.
I have recently imported the files, when I first swapped from WindowsXP, and they weren't put into film rolls which I would like to do now!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
To create a film roll you must be in the Full library
    and
Have at least one pic selected.
Every pic in your Library is in a Roll, they have to be. Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder.

  • Creating film rolls does not seem possible?!?

I am trying to organise my iPhoto library by creating new film rolls but it appears that it will not let me do it. I select the photos that I want in the new film roll and then click <file> but "create new film roll" is still light grey and therefore not a selectable option. Anyone any clue what I am doing wrong?
    Cheers,
    Ben

Additionally make sure you are in the main Library and not an album. You can't create new rolls from within albums.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Film rolls

I am trying to organize my large iPhoto Library into more manageable film rolls, but the option "Create new film roll" under "File" menu remains greyed regardless of what combination of picture nominations, highlighting, "View" menu opening, etc. I do. How do I create new film rolls for the purpose of segmenting larger rolls in iPhoto Library?

It seems there is a problem with the application itself.
Without touching your iPhoto Library, move to the trash (do not empty) the following:
    iPhoto (application folder)
    iPhoto.pkg, iPhoto_602.pkg, iPhoto_603.pkg, iPhoto_604.pkg, iPhotocontent.pkg (main library/Receipts).
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist (user library/preferences folder)
Next, insert your iLife06 Installer DVD and double click the installer -ilife-6.mpkg. Click through the installer screens. The screen after "select a destination" has a button on the left - customize. Select it.
Uncheck everything but iPhoto. Select "easy install".
    Next screen>Install.
Once iPhoto is installed, go to software update to update to the latest version of iPhoto - 6.0.4. Restart the computer and repair permissions using Disk Utility.
When you start up iPhoto, hold down the option key. Select your iPhoto Library. Once the app. is open try the film roll selection after highlighting your library and selecting a few images. Remember you'll need to review your Preferences as the app. will show the default values.
    Post back with results.

  • Add photo to existing film roll

    Hi all,
My question relates to adding photos into an existing film roll. I have some motion jpeg movies taken with my still camera that were not imported to iPhoto when the original folder was imported. Don't remember why unless older versions of iphoto did not import .mov files. Anyhow since these movies relate to the other stills in the roll I would like to add them to the existing roll. Forum search and iphoto help didn't turn up any answer. I suppose I could delete the roll and reimport the entire folder, but was hoping for a simpler solution. Thanks for any help.

    Hi Jim,
    After the movies are imported:
Command click on each movie and roll you want combined to one roll
    Go to File>create film roll
    From the iPhoto Help menu:
    Creating a customized film roll
    To create a film roll:
Click Library in the Source list.
Select the photos you want in your new film roll. Command-click to select non-adjacent photos.
Choose File > Create Film Roll.
Your selected photos will be removed from their current film rolls and moved to the new film roll you create.
After you've created a new film roll, you can name it and change its date. Customizing film rolls is one way to better organize your photo library.

  • Multiple film rolls in source library

Belated thanks to those who helped me create new film rolls (in August!) Your advice was accurate, but my source library shows no film rolls except 'last roll'(although there are many rolls shown on the hard disk). When I create a new selection of photos in a new film roll it simply makes that selection 'last roll' and I can't rename it.

Yes, Film Rolls are very flexible. You can drag selected photo(s) into another roll. Don't release the mouse until the roll header is highlighted, and then the photos will drop into that roll. Command-click to add photos to your selection; that's the easiest way to select photos from different rolls at once. When they are selected, drag any one of them to the header of the roll to which you want them added. Or make your selection and do File > Create Film Roll to bring them into a new roll.
Film Rolls only list chronologically, in ascending or descending order. So if you'd like to tweak the order of your rolls a bit, you can edit the film roll date. It's independent from the dates of the photos, so it doesn't hurt anything to change it.
    Have fun.

  • Default film roll numbers

When I import photos from my camera into iPhoto v.6 it creates ridiculous film roll numbers, e.g. "Roll 4594735214". Is there any way to reset the film roll numbers so they will start over from 1?
    iMac G5, G4 PMac, PBook   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Not without creating a new library and starting over from scratch. You can always edit the roll number once it's in iPhoto to something more informative that Roll ##. I upload to a folder on the desktop, give that folder a meaningful name like "07/01/06-Pechanga Fireworks" and them drag that folder into the iPhoto open window. That gives me a roll with the same name. Much more informative.

  • "View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

"View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

Since you're using the term Rolls you must be running iPhoto 6 or earlier. For future problems be sure you post in the iPhoto 6 or forum.
For this problem the View File rolls will only Be sure you're clicked on the Library. That menu item is not available in an album or other item. If you have clicked the library icon first and it's still grayed out close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and then try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Creating a new roll in the library, impossible!

Help! I am having difficulties creating a new roll within my library. I have followed the directions in the help menu (i.e. clicking library, selecting the photos i want, file>create film roll) BUT when I go to the file menu, 'create film roll is not an option highlighted. Pleasssse help! Thank you thank you.

Has to be a glitch in iPhoto. First try running Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. Are you at the latest version, 6.0.2? If not update to that and try again. Lastly you might have to reinstall iPhoto from the source disks it came on. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Then install iPhoto, apply the latest update and repair disk permissions.

  • How can I change the order of photos in a film roll?

I've scanned in images and then imported them to i-photo and they are not in order on the film roll in i-photo. Does anyone know how I can re-order them within the roll?
    Thanks
    Ruth

There's only two way to arrange photos in the roll itself while having the rolls visible in the organize window. They are last file created first or last file created last.
You can create an album of that roll and then arrange them manually, by date, by file name. If by date or file name and you want them sorted alphanumerically or chronologically you'll have to make sure the check box, "Place most recent photos at the top" is unchecked in the iPhoto Preferences/Appearances pane.
