Creating a folded card

As a long-time Windows user, I have in the past created many greetings cards and "brochures" using MS Publisher which has an option of a publication layout to produce book-fold publications where I can produce four pages, and then print pages 4 and 1 side by side, and then 2 and 3 on the reverse side (and then fold it like a greetings card).
I am a fairly new Mac user and seeking an alternative to MS
Publisher and have been testing out the trial version of Pages (v.1.0.2) on a real brochure which I have a need to produce and I just cannot get it to do this logically. I have set the document to print two pages side by side, but I have to lay it out with my back page as page 1, then my front page as page 2. If I then set the layout to be facing
pages in order to set inside and outside margins, the pages re-arrange themselves into a different order! The Help files say that odd pages will always be on the right hand side. So - I then reset my pages back to their logical order, and sure enough page 1 is then on the right, followed by 2 and 3 side by side, followed by 4 on the left. However, there is then no way I can then print 4 and 1 side by side, followed by 2 and 3.
I have tried this with all pages in separate sections, and with all pages in one section, and with pages 2-3 in one section, but it makes no difference. I can of course go back to calling page 4 page 1 as above, and that works fine provided I don't want my pages numbered, but it seems a very basic need for anyone trying to use a simple DTP type program. Is there any way to do this? I have read the thread headed "Newby trying to make booklet" posted on 17th January and the answer seems to be that the only way is to export the document to PDF and use a booklet program to print from. This seems crazy!
I would be really grateful for any help, even if it's to say - stop looking - you can't do it. (And in that case is there a good simple not-too-expensive DTP program for the Mac that would do what I want?)

welcome to the Pages Discussions. The easyst way to
have a "four-pager" by one fold is, to have a
document with only two sheets. Create page 1 and page
4 on the first sheet and the pages 2-3 on the second
sheet of the document. You have to set the paper size
in Pages to landscape, than you can fold the sheet
after printing.
But if you want to have more then a "four-pager" (and
not a many folded flyer), you have to use the
solution David mentioned.
Thank you Frank. This is the solution I had ended up with, which does work, but really it is as I guessed, and there is no automatic way.

Click on the Layout button lower right and choose a Vertical lyout from the dropdown

Create new folder in iphoto before download so as not to crowd the library

ok - getting frustrated - just installed iphoto 6 - hoping that it would be easier = more direct when I download from memory card... no luck.
Problem: I created now Folder on left hand side... under library/last roll/last 12 month... wanted to drag the new photos from the memory card but no no.no... the photo was downloaded to "library" rather than the folder I wanted to - the desired folder staayed empty...oh ... please give me some good suggestions.. how to do this.. fast and quick - the reason why I bought this program - iLife'06 - in the first place...

Library contain ALL photos. This is the way it is from within iPhoto as files are actually structured into 'Roll' folders on disk. See <~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data/...> I too struggled on the very same issue as you... this is actually frustrating to say the least (bad first steps in..) but I have found a clever way around: Say hello to Smart Albums!
Next time you import a roll into iPhoto make use of the "Roll Name" field. Second, select New Smart Album from File menu, give it a meaningful and unique name then Match the following conditions: Roll, Contain, "Roll Name" you gave just before import from camera. This will generate an album featuring only this one roll.
In short:
First, give the Roll a name before you hit "import" button.

Second, create a new Smart Album: Roll, Contain, <"
(see link 2 bellow)
Remember Library will always contain ALL your Photos. This is the master album.

Can't create new folder on an external hard drive, and how to transfer files?

Hello everyone,
the non-English speaking videographer I translate for is having problems operating his Premiere CS5 for Mac from an external hard drive. He cannot create new folder on the external hard drive (the "New Folder" button is grayed-out when tries to export media onto the external hard drive) and when he simply tries to create new folder, the "new folder" option isn't available.
He suspects it's because the hard drive was formatted for PC.
Questions:
- should PC-formatting cause that problem?
- what's the proper way to transfer media files from PC-formatted external hard drive to the internal hard drive on Mac?
Would appreciate your advice.

He is right on the money
Now, for the sad or FAT part. You need to format the drive as FAT32 to make it work both on PC and MAC but, and that is a big BUT, the max file size of any given file will be 4GB. I haven't treid other formats yet, like the journaled MAC OS extended, but I don't think that would work. We transfer our files through or own gigabit network so I never had to try it, other than FAT32 formatted SDHC cards.

Quarter fold card template for pages

I've just bought a mac mini and love it.
I'm still moving over from MS products to Apple and it's going pretty well apart from MS Publisher.
This still seems to be better at certain things than Pages.
One issue is the lack of templates for cards in particular.
Does anyone know where i can get hold of a quarter fold card template for Pages?
I did see one but it was for Pages 09 and version 5.5.2 doesn't seem to open it.

You can use a free Avery for MS Word Greeting Card. Click the Template Only (works with PC and Mac) radio button, and then download. Open in Pages v5.5.2, and first save as a Pages document in your Documents folder. Set the font, etc. to what you want in your Quarter-fold card template. Once you have done that, from the File menu, select Save as Template, and give it a name. While you are there, observe what a right-click on the template name presents in a pop-up menu.
When you open Pages without specifying a document, it will default to a Template Chooser. Your Quarter-fold template is parked in the User Templates category.
Pages v5.5.2 is not designed to compete as a true Desktop Publishing/Layout application. If you want to open Publisher documents on the Mac, get a free copy of LibreOffice, which will open them. Since it is not Publisher itself, your mileage will vary on layout accuracy. The LibreOffice PDF documentation is available, and created with LibreOffice. Since this is a superset, MS Office replacement package, there is a forms designer in the Writer application, and the ability to open PDF and edit them also exists. There is also complete Visio support from the first version to the latest.
When you first launch LibreOffice, you must click the open button in the initial dialog, and afterwards, a double-click will open it normally. This will be true for any Mac applications obtained outside the OS X App Store.

Half fold & quarter fold cards

How do I make a half-fold (takes a full sheet of card stock) or quarter-fold card in PSE 6? When I go into the Create part of PSE it only gives 2 sizes of cards 5x7 and 4x6. The only cards I find locally are the half and quarter fold which are standard Avery templates. I can do these with other programs that don't have a lot of options. I would like to be able to do them in PSE but I don't want to have to fiddle and mess. Does PSE make use of standard Avery templates? IF not is there an easy way to do this?

Given your budget, have you considered a secondhand G4 tower? You'd have the upgrade potential that the iMac's design doesn't permit. Then you could run dual internal hard drives, select your graphics card, and have PCI slots for any expansion cards your audio and/or video projects might require. The iMacs are great right out of the box, but if you're someone who'd like the flexibility to customize your computer for specific needs, I'd consider something like the 2002 G4 MDD model. Why not post your question in the G4 Expansion Forum, and see what advice/suggestions you receive from other G4 owners? Of course, you'd need to get a display, but then again, there are plenty of CRT or LCD models to choose from. If you've got a decent display for a PC, you can use it with the Mac.

Creating a folder on an SMB share using a Mac

Hi everyone,
This is more of a question than a problem I'm trying to solve, really. Though the answer might help me better explain the issue to our security team.
Our environment has multiple Windows file servers, both 2003 and 2008. If one of these SMB shares is accessed from a Mac and the user creates a folder, will the ACLs on the share that are set to cascade actually cascade to this newly created folder? We've had issues in the past where ACLs that are supposedly set to cascade on a shared folder are not present on sub-folders created from Macs.
Next question: if the share resides on a netapp device, do the same rules apply? The Macs are still connecting to these shared folders using the SMB protocol.
All Macs are bound to our 2008 AD domain and use network accounts with local homefolders. The issue seems to happen when one or both of the following things happen:
1. A Mac user copies/creates a folder on a Netapp share and for some reason it doesn’t inherit rights correctly
2. We move the folder from one share on an actual Windows server to the Netapp and it doesn’t take permissions correctly.
Please let me know if you need any other information.

Let's put it this way: I'm asking on a Mac site because the people on non-windows support sites are WAAAAY more interested in talking about problems and solutions involving things other than Windows.
I'm fairly certain that the windows servers ARE respecting their own inheritance rules, barring any major bugs and the like which someone may know about...
The isue isn't with Macs moving shares to a netapp, it's with a share being moved to a NetApp that has folders created by a Mac. Talking with our security team further, it seems the problem may be limited to shares resident on a NetApp or moved from a Windows server to a NetApp.
I was primarily asking to see if anyone knew of any issues with these particular situations or had experienced something similar and had dug into it any deeper with F5 (NetApp vendor).

Error while creating a folder in business area

View contains no items,folder will not be created.
May i know the reason why it is prompting this error?
There are items in EUL and i also checked in the backend as well.

I have columns with date,number and varchar.i unchecked the date and then tried creating a folder.
But still the problem persists

I have one scenario for CS.the scenario is realted to automotive industry. Basically its a trading industry of HCV,MCV,LCV apart from that they will do servicing also. First the customer comes for a service.he is having free services. he will have waranty for spare parts of the vehicle. once he comes for servicing first the executive will take complains from the customer after that a Job card will be issued to the customer. there his chasis no ,engine no and registration no will be there. once enter the chasis no entire customer details has to come. how many free services he is having for how many kilo meters.then job card will go to the spare parts dept.that dept will issue the spare parts.then they will invoice the customer. he will pay the payment.and finally the gate pass will be given to the customer to deliver the vehicle.

LR 4 & 4.1 can't create new folder manually during photo import

I've sometimes found the 'Make New Folder' option to be a bit hit and miss on Win7....so I generally avoid it. In your case, wouldn't it be easier to have Lightroom create the folder for you by setting up your Destination panel as follows:
Obviously the selected target parent folder in your case would be "Photos Working Folders", use "Organize: Into One Folder", tick the Into Subfolder box and enter the name of the sub-folder you want, e.g. raw0015. As you can see, if the sub-folder doesn't yet exist, Lightroom then shows you that it will be creating it for you.

Nobody can tell you anything without knowing exact site and server specs, but I would suspect that naming the folder "html" wasn't the brightest of ideas, since that's usually a default (invisible) folder name existing somewhere on the server and the user not having privileges to overwrite it.

How do I create a business card on my MAC?

I used to be a Windows user and everytime I try to do something I knew how to do in windows I can't figure out how to do it in MAC. Can someone tell me how to create a business card or find a template to create one?
I've tried to find the anwser everywhere and can't find it.

It's not the computer platform that determines this, how you make business cards depends on what program you're using.
I assume, that since you mention coming from Windows, you're used to doing this task in Word. You can do it in Word for Mac. You can probably find quite a few shareware or freeware programs on MacUpdate or VersionTracker. I've used AppleWorks & now Pages for years for this kind of stuff.
This is the forum dedicated to the workings of the forums themselves, not for technical questions. A better place for this question would have been the forum for using the model of Mac you have.
Another little FYI: Apple Macintosh computers are referred to as Mac (capital M, small a, small c), not MAC (which is an acronym for the Media Access Control address of a networking device).
