CReating a home music network server

Hello folks I am after some advice.
We are due to move house, and this is a significant move up the ladder with a conservatory, living room, dining room and three bedrooms.
I currently have a small home network of an intel iMac with USB harddrive with the music for itunes it. And I have an iBook. Currently the iMac feeds my home stereo via optical out into a dac.
In the new house I intend to have the iMac in the dining room and use the ibook to stream music to the two hifis one in the conservatory and one in the sitting room. This will be accomplished with two Airport expresses and my wireless internet router.
Looking around eBay I find the price of G3 Powermacs have dropped madly to around 50 quid. This is almost to good to be true as I have room under the stairs in the new place to stick it so here are my questions.
1. Are internal harddrives still available for a G3 powermac?
2. All the ones I have seen have OS9 on them, I would simply be using it as back up and music storage to be accessed from my iMac and iBook, will this be possible with OS9 on?
3. I do not intend attaching a keyboard, mouse and screen to the mac, or at least in the long term, is there any way I can VNC to OS9 from OSX? or is there another way?
4. Will OS9 be stable enough, i.e. I would want it running 24/7
5. Finally would there be anyway to tell itunes the music is on a network in OS9 and would there be any way to have the G3 show up on my macs permanently, i.e. I don't have to keep hitting 'go' and pray it shows up? (At work for instance network places on the PC just show up on the desktop as long as they are available.)
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
BTW What I am looking at is keeping my iMac free for other things, for instance if I want to play a computer game on my iMac whilst my wife listening to streamed music in the living room. And secondly I want this to be as cheap as possibly so no Squeezeboxes!
Cheers

Alas I see one error of my way, ideally I don't want to be streaming music with VNC, I want to be able to pick music on my ibook to be pumped from the G3. I find with the normal network sharing you can't search tunes which is really bad so I am hoping the G3 will be the actual storage area for itunes music and will be able to stream from the G3 but controlled form the iBook.

  • Creating Home Music Network!?

    Good Morning,
I have a big music collection. I've been trying to set up a system in my house where I can leave my iPod connected to the stereo system and have my whole collection accessible all the time. I have an iPod Classic docked to my stereo system. But it's kind of a hassle every time I buy more music from iTunes to sync the iPod with my main computer, where the music source files reside.
I have an idea to take care of my music system, and I'm wondering if anyone else has done this...
I want to hook up a laptop to my stereo, and use that laptop as a dedicated music machine?
    Advantages...
...With my wireless network, I could easily send new purchases to the laptop and sync it with my main library
...Run iTunes from the laptop, with audio cables hooked up to my stereo system
...Huge hard drive for all my music
...Larger screen for displaying album artwork
I could purchase a laptop for only maybe $150 more than a 32GB iPod Touch. I'd continue to use my 80GB Classic when I go on the road.
Has anyone done this? Am I missing something? Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Matthew

Have you looked at the Airport Express as an option. I run all my music from my PC through my house using two of them, I have a USB wireless adaptor on my PC. It then streams to my stereo and to some powered speakers. Works great.

  • Home Office Network Setup

Sorry in advance. Just spent the better part of the weekend trying to find related post/replies...and just got woefully confused.
I do architectural graphics and work primarily on a mac for PShop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Sketchup. I also use a PC to work in AutoCAD. Trying to update my OSes (major backup needed, hence the external drive)AND streamline my workflow.
Currently, I use sneakernet/flashdrive to share graphics files between the two platforms. This is getting old. Was told I could share an external hard drive between the two. Bought one without researching HOW-TO first. My bad. Before integrating the hard drive, would like to create a home-office network. (hard drive not connected yet)
    Here's what I have:
imac G4 17-inch, OS X 10.4.11, NO airport extreme card installed
Dell Latitude D610 notebook, Windows XP, sp1 (I know, updating after success here)
My Book External Hard Drive (non-portable, TO BE usb-connected to imac)
    ABS Snow
    A few pre-bluetooth printers
*Current set up*, archaic, but works fine:
Cable modem> ethernet> ABS (WAN port)
    ABS (LAN port)>ethernet> imac g4
    Windows wireless to ABS
    Printer > usb > imac
    What I want to do:
    1) Print wirelessly from pc.
    2) Access my mac-stored graphic files from pc.
    3) Share external drive with mac and pc without having to do the sneaker-flash drive dance. I intend on connecting directly from mac via usb.
    4) Read/write SHARED files to/from said external drive with either mac or pc.
    5) Use external drive for backups, mac and pc.
    6) Share iTunes library between pc and mac.
Money's my biggest limitation, or I'd just go buy a newer extreme w/ usb ports, etc. After trying to piecemeal the 5000 related posts I've read, I officially have no idea where to start.
I THINK I understand how to share files/folders between the two (http://www.ifelix.net/tech/3020.html) With my current setup, can I simply use file sharing in a similar way to connect PC to external hard drive? printer?
I THINK I will be moving my mac documents/graphic files/music to the external hard drive. I THINK I will chose the moved folders on this _external hard drive_ that I want to pc-share. I THINK the mac-pc compatible external drive will allow equal read/write access. I THINK it's going to be THIS easy.
BUT...does the Snow have the capacity to support my intended network (internet, external drive, printer)? Or will the mac need an airport extreme card to make this work?
Also, any thoughts on partitioning the external drive? I've read some posts elsewhere with that recommendation. It seems like a potential headache since I'll be sharing things like music and graphic files.
I have some serious backing up and general hd cleanup to do but am petrified to lose everything in my attempt to share this external disk. Help! Mega-many thank you's if you made it this far in the post!

Does the mac need to be wireless in order to utilize file sharing or 'Connect to Server' commands?
No. You can do both via an Ethernet connection. A matter of fact, file sharing will be demonstrably faster with Ethernet as compared to wireless.
Do I need programs like DAVE and/or SAMBA to make all this wireless talk happen?
Neither. These have nothing to do with wireless connectivity. When sharing files between Macs, you will utilize AFP which is built-in OS X. Sharing with Windows/Linux clients will require SMB. This too is available from OS X.
It sounds like, by your post, that the pc will only network with peripherals directly connected to the router (snow) and NOT to peripherals connected to the mac, which is wired to the snow. Is that correct?
Sorry, if I mislead you. That is not true. A PC can access either devices connected wired/wirelessly to the Snow or to devices connected to a Mac that is sharing them.
Let me know if the AFP link I provided doesn't answer all your questions. You may also find the following iFelix link handy: Sharing files between a Windows XP PC and a Mac running OS 10.4.x

  • Could not create shortcut Manage Virtual Networks.lnk during VM Server 2 install. Why?

I am trying to install VMware Server 2.0.2 on my HP Laptop running Windows 8 Pro as Host. But I am getting the following warning messages but the install continues to completion:

Sorry, the page you were looking for could not be found.
I am at a loss how to correct this error. I have googled, read and followed a lot of the online help that I can find including taking ownership of suspect target folders such as ProgramData, all to no avail.
At this point, I am hoping someone does know what specifically can help resolve my issue and I am asking for help. VMware knowledge base or support are not helpful.
    Thanks all,

Did you run the VMServer setup *as Administrator*?
Did you have IIS installed on your system before you installed VMServer?

I got some more info that may help.
I put a cd on my laptop, and was able to share it to my computer... So the problem is only from my computer to my laptop. I tried the firewall thing and it did not help. I read the rest of the trouble shooting page, and nothing else applies. iTunes is an execption and already was. I can not think of anything else being my problem. Do you think I should re-install iTunes or would that be a waste of time? At this point I am about to just call Apple for some help because I am getting to stressed over this.
    Thanks

  • Can I create a home network withous dsl connection with airport express

can I create a home network without dsl connection with airport express?
So it means I can't connect to my HP Airprint/Wireless printer without exretnal connection through ISP?? Just need to print from my Mac and iphone. I have Vodafone Prepaid connection, which is directly connected to my Mac. Does that make an internal network possible?

You have to set up the Air Port with an internet connection to set up a network. Do you have a modem? If yes you can set up the network.

  • I would like to transfer a playlist and associated music from one computer on a home sharing network to another without transferring the entire library.  How?

I would like to transfer a playlist and associated music from one computer to another in a home sharing network without transfering the entire itunes library.  How would I do that?

you can transfer playlists using home sharing but it won't copy the actual music files within to the other machine.
however, i believe TuneRanger can do that.

  • Airports are creating too many separate networks, how to fix?

Here's a picture of my current setup.  I have 1 Airport extreme that creates a 2ghz and 5ghz network.  It travels via ethernet to a airtport express 2G that creates  2ghz and 5ghz networks of the same name as the Airport etreme.
Within that whole setup I have 2 Airport express' extending the 2ghz network which I believe is creating my problem.....
With this whole setup some sections of my home get these results:
It's quite annoying especially when streaming airplay because my iphone or such device will jump back and forth between the two networks making the music stream choppy.
How would I make both the networks merge as one?  Is there a way to extend a network using ethernet as the connection instead of wifi??

Oh wow, I feel like a fool, how did i not catch that >.<
Also one last question, should I allow the 2nd gen express' network to be extended whil I'm already allowing the airport extreme as well?
Thanks I'm pretty sure you fixed this

  • WGM creates new home folders with _unknown user/group, SA can't change it

    A little background:
In our school we've got an xserve (about 1.5 yrs old), that was having issues last year. (the OD database pretty much ate itself). in august we did a clean install of 10.5, and updated to 10.5.3 (after suffering through the AFP/OD issues in 10.5.2). Because of the corrupt database from the last server, and the fact that a large number of our accounts have migrated through 4-5 iterations of servers from 9.2 on through 10.4.11, we created all new clean accounts by hand in WGM and moved the user files to the new home folders, changed user and permissions with SA to the new accounts and propogated that info to all the files for each home folder. everything has been going fine since then.
    until this week.
the issue was discovered when we tried to create a new staff account (we created several accounts last week with no issue). in WGM everything looked fine. it created the account, assigned it to the proper group, and sucessfully created a home folder. the problem however was when we went into SA to change the permissions. we don't need everybody seeing everyone else's files, so we change the default group and everyone permissions to something more appropriate (don't even get me started on that gripe). When you navigate to the new home folder you just created in WGM, it shows the owner as _unknown (read/write) and group _unknown (read only... I think), Everyone (read only). Server Admin refuses to change the user or group. doesn't matter whether you use the 'show users/group' dialog and drag the account, or whether you edit it manually and insert the short name or UID. when you hit save, it stubbornly reverts back to unknown/unknown for user and group. we've tried creating accounts with different templates, no template, different account names and UID's, all with the same result.
The odd part is that nothing in the OS has changed since we first set it up and created all the users. nothing installed, nothing updated...
We've stayed at 10.5.3 due to the disaster in one of the updates (10.5.5 I think) that many of our other local districts had with network accounts not being able to see their own library folders due to permission issues, as well as the AFP causing 100% CPU use bug reported with 10.5.5
A second, probably related issue is that when browsing home folders in Server Admin filesharing, any files our network users create seem to end up assignedunknown/unknown for user and group (as far back as October it seems). After searching around the net most of the day I came across a lot of info about the _unknown user issues for folks upgrading from 10.4, but these are all newly created 10.5 network users (not local) logging in and working in home folders on the server. The original owners can read/write/delete these files as normal.
Any help would be most appreciated.

ok... I find we were shot in the foot by one of our own.
The quick answer: DO A GET INFO ON THE VOLUME WITH THE SHAREPOINTS! if the 'ignore permissions on this volume' box is checked... UNCHECK IT!
Explaination: not sure how the ignore permissions box got checked, but I don't think it was done directly by human hands. we use Carbon Copy Cloner Ver. 3.something (not sure which at this point) to back up both our data (daily) and server (weekly) drives to remote storage. by striking coincidence, things started saving with _unknown user and group about the same time as crash reporter shows that CCC hosed itself. My guess is that CCC temporarily ignores permissions (as shown in the status when you do a clone) and then resets them to their original state. when it crashed, it looks like they were still set to ignore, so it happily set it back to that state every time it ran after that. not sure why the account creation issue suddenly turned up after so long... In any event, it turns out that if you have sharepoints on a server volume, AND you set the OS to ignore permissions on that volume, BAD things happen (I'm not sure it should even be an option on a shared volume, but that's for the engineering folks to figure out.) .... specifically, the symptoms above. if you login as root (yeah, I know that's something you should never do) and uncheck the ignore permissions box on the volume, then log into WGM, as root (yeah, yeah, I know... even worse) and set ALL of the Directory Administrator accounts to 'do not administer this server', and no change rights for the directory, save those settings, and then set them back to 'administer this server', and FULL rights to change the open directory, save again. and then WAIT until the drives stop going nuts... after that everything works fine.

  • Re-ripping CD's in lossless creates duplicates in music library

    Hi,
My music has already been ripped into iTunes using AAC 256kbps which is fine for mobile music. I'm planning on picking up an Apple TV for a music only server to my home music system and I want to re-rip my music into iTunes using Apple Lossless. I created a new folder under playlists for the lossless music but duplicate copies remain in the music library! Is there a way for me to re-rip my music and have it in one folder and not have the duplicates in the music library? Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Brent

I think I understand what you want to do.
I have about 200 CD's and a dozen albums bought from the iTunes Store. I thought about ripping all my CD's in Lossless format and then creating AAC versions from these. Music streamed to my Airport Express should be Lossless whenever possible, while music on my iPhone should only be AAC versions.
In iTunes, the "Music" category will contain both versions, as "Music" is your music library. You can create smart playlists to select only Lossless or AAC versions, but you can't have "Music" show only one of these versions.
At the moment, iTunes isn't able to handle the same song in different formats (the way I want it to). Ideally, there would be an option like "Prefer Lossless version" or "Use AAC versions when syncing iPhone/iPod" or something like that. You could also use two separate iTunes libraries (start iTunes while holding the Option key).
    Kind regards,
    Michael

  • Home wireless network trouble

I got a new wireless router, Netgear WPN824 from Newegg, a refurbished product. I set up a home wireless network using the online manual on the Netgear website. The router works well for the wired setup. But I could not connect to wireless.
My wireless network shows up on the list of available wireless networks. I can connect to other wireless networks such as that of my neighbour's. I tried connecting to my network using both unsecured and secure WEP / WPA modes. Except once, I could never connect. That one time, as soon as I could connect and verify that I was indeed connected I thought the problem was resolved and so shutdown my system to see if i could connect again - alas, same trouble again. I use NetworkManager to connect, and here's the output for two networks - jaydoc which is my home network, and linksys, that of my neighbour's to which i can always connect.

Is the wireless router i got a dud, being refurbished i took my chances and maybe i wasn't so lucky..! Or is it something wrong in my network settings..? I tried shutting down everything and then turning the modem, then the router and finally the PC without the ethernet cable connected. Still I am unable to connect.
Any help is deeply appreciated. I am a total newbie in networking...!

So if its still a DHCP problem, it seems to be affecting only the wireless part. How can I make wireless use the same DHCP servers as the wired..? Or is there something else wrong here..?

  • ITunes 11 can't share on "home sharing" network

I just downloaded iTunes 11 and now I can't import songs from a computer on my "home sharing" network.  There is no way to drag a title to import it.  What is my problem?

I was having this problem to. I could see part the contents of the library I wanted to import from. Switched off Home Sharing and Switched it back on again. Then I found two ways to achieve the import.
    1) Turn on View Sidebar, Then you can see the other library in the lefthand pane as in itunes 10. Select the items you want and click on the import button in the righthand bottom cornee.
2)In the interface without the sidebar there is a drop down select box to allow you to select Music, Movies, TV shows etc. At the bottom the shares available to you are shown click on the one you want. Then select the type of content ie Music Movies etc select the items you want and click on the import button at the bottom right.
    Hope this helps

  • How to use Airport Extreme to create a second wireless network with different IP addresses behind an existing modem/router?

    Hi,
I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?
    Thanks!

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....
If they can see the HD connected to the AirPort Extreme, will they be able to access it
Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
or will they still need the password needed to get onto the AirPort Extreme network?
The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network).  One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

  • HT1178 Do I want to create a new wireless network or join my current network?  I can't connect an ethernet cable to the Mac / printer and to the wireless modem at same time - in two different rooms.

I am trying to set up Time Capsule so that I can do my first backup (after 1 1/2 years!) with Time Machine.  I have read other forums, but in each case they instructions eventually do not apply.
I have connected my TC to my existing wireless router.  This sits in a bedroom and cannot be moved as a rental home.
I have plugged in the TC and updated the software.
Now - do I want to A Create a New Wireless Network (remember I can't connect the TC to Mac using an Ethernet cable). B Replace an existing base station or wireless router with TC (only intend to use for TM as don't know other benefits as of yet). or C want TC to join current network.
Thinking C.  If I choose C, it then asks A TC to wireless join current network (NO as already connected using Ethernet). B want to connect TC to my network using Ethernet to extend my existing wireless network. C want to disable the wireless network on this TC and connect it to my computer or network using Ethernet - CANNOT do this as devices can not be in the same room.
Or do I want to create new wireless network - first set of questions - choice A?  What is the benefit to creating a new one when I won't be in this rental house for longer than 18 more months??
    Please help and quickly!  Thanks!

    Let me suggest some things.
But first ask exactly what wireless router you have now and what type of broadband service?
Are you happy with the wireless on the current router? If so, then you can plug the TC straight into whatever computer you have by ethernet, short 1M cord with no connection to the network. And use it without affecting your existing network at all. This is trivial setup.
Although you don't say exactly what Mac and printer you are using, is it a desktop? Laptop it is definitely easier not to plug it in, but a desktop you can plug in the TC and it will all sit happily together.
How is the printer connected and to what?
I am not sure why you need such quick help.. this is all minor setup stuff.. and 18months in todays world is like permanent man.
Your multiple A, B, C are more confusing than helpful.
The best choices without more info.. are to replace the existing wireless router with the TC. ie your option B.. but how to do this depends on the type of connection. Is it cable or adsl? Can you easily bridge the existing modem router.. if that is what it is?
Think carefully in the ideal world what would you like..
    and what do you have..
We can probably suggest ways and means to fit what you like to what you have.. without introducing a stack of options that are doing your head in.

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.
