Creating a layer mask that doesn't move

Hi, I'm just starting to learn how to use After Effects. I'm trying to apply a mask to a layer. I figured out that right clicking on the layer and going to Mask > New Mask adds a mask. My problem however is that the the layer I want the mask to mask moves but I want the mask to stay still. How do I go about doing this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Masks are on layers. Perhaps what you're looking for is a track matte. A track matte is a layer that defines transparency for an underlying layer. If you move the underlying layer, the track matte layer doesn't move with it (unless you explicitly connect them with parenting or something like that).

I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!

I need to create a clipping mask that covers the negative space of my created path...

Like in a Circle I need to make the compound path the inner area or negative space of my objects. I have expanded letters and joined their paths so that there are negative space, I was wondering if it were possible to fill in the negative space with a clipping mask? (like one would with an object like a circle or rectangle) The letter that I am using is an A and I have connected two A's together like a diamond reflecting each other... Is it possible to create a clipping mask to cover the negative space of the inside of the letters...?

As (Kurt and) I (mis)understand it, you may, presuming the As form one Compound Path:
1) Lock the underlying gradient rectangle;
2) Copy the path of the four As and hide the original;
3) With the copy selected Object>Compound Path>Release, then delete the outer path, then select all the inner paths and Object>Compound Path>Make;
4) Unlock the rectangle from 1) and select it with the compound path from 3) and Object>Clipping Path>Make;
5) Show the original compound path from 2).
You can do it without the hiding and locking, but that makes it easier to see and to avoid mistakes.

Black Screen with cursor that doesn't move! Help!

Hi, a few months ago my family encountered a problem when we started up our laptop and it prompted us that our laptop failed to start. As usual, I just pressed "Launch Startup Repair". That lead us to a black screen with nothing else but a cursor
that DOES NOT move.
We put the laptop aside as none of us knew the resolution and somebody we knew might have been able to fix it, but unfortunately to this day he hasn't been over to help us out. Our laptop is still in the same state and we're very eager to get it working
without having to spend lots of money at a computer specialist.
Our specifications are as following:
Toshiba Satellite A660
Intel Core i5 CPU M 450
2.40GHz
4096 MB Memory
I am unable to get other specifications such as Video Card and Graphics Drivers as I cannot access the desktop.
Any fixes? We are very desperate to get this computer working.

Can I create a footer that doesn't move with a scrolling layout?

I'm making a book that has horizontal and vertical layouts, and I'd love to make a footer that stays put while the content scrolls. Is that possible?

Having taken almost an hour using my primitive Aussie download speed Broadband, to download the 1gig plus book...and expecting some supa dupa new gizmo..... Its a great example of using the power of iBA coupled together with a full understanding of how to use the built in options and facilities.
Apart from certain things which I personally don't like ( six mini sized videos on a white page ) it is a masterclass worth downloading by anybody wanting to have a reference work at hand. It is free and basically from what I see, its a brochure for a company.
The virtical scrolling pages are...... just that and available to anybody using iBA and a LS template and wanting vertical scrolling - which I think is pointless , but hey....
Basically, you create in LS and edit in Portrait.
A comment in the book was .. " I took my staff to a beer tasting....."
"My Staff", to me suggest the book is a studio product
Use the Orientation icons top menu to see your page in either modes.
I suggest you open a template and use it as a test book.... I keep one all the time and its now full or trials and tests! OR, duplicate your book and play with the copy, it saves heartache when it goes wrong!
Again my disclaimer.... most people do not like turning the iPad around and as books made with iBA are not usable on other devices, I see no point in having basically duplicate content seen in porttrait or LS.....after all, you do not keep grabbing your flatescreen TV and turning it vertical , or expecting a cinema screen to rotate...

IPod stuck on Apple logo with loading bar that doesn't move.

My iPod won't turn on so i tried to factory reset it, and it is stuck on the apple logo with a loading bar that's empty and wont move. iTunes also says "Waiting for iPod." Help please!

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

How do I create an accessible PDF that doesn't generate a "tagged annotations - failed" error on the Accessibility Checker?

I just reported this as a bug to Adobe, as I think it is.

Concise problem statement: URLs generated from InDesign CC failed on Accessibility Checker (problem also exists in 2014)
Steps to reproduce bug:
1. Generated URLs using hyperlinks panel in InDesign. When accessibility report is run, they are flagged as "Tagged annotations - Failed," listed as Element 1, 2, etc. The links are live and clickable.
2. To test, I removed all hyperlinks in Acrobat. It passed the test.
3. Then I used "Create Links from URLs." The links were re-created. Running the accessibility report brought up the same error message.
Results: The links created by Acrobat that actually do work fail the "tagged annotations" report. You have provided the tools to check accessibility, but the program itself can't generate URLs that pass the report.
Expected results: I should be able to easily create an accessible pdf, as your documentation says I can. This, along with the failure of your "articles" panel detailed in another bug report, strike me as a serious problem with InDesign that should be fixed soon, especially given that designers are required more an more to adhere to accessibility guidelines.

Sync keeps creating an old account that doesn't work

I have 2 desktops and a Powerbook and an iBook. I have a problem with the 2 wireless computers. When they sync, an account that I created with the wrong email address (I left the number 1 out) keeps appearing and becoming the active account and I go offline. Each time I have to delete that account and activate the real account. I don't know where the information about that faulty account exists to be synched with. Is there a way I can find it and delete it from the Mail sync prefs? Or how can I fix this?

If you have a .Mac account (which you haven’t mentioned), the way to fix this problem in the case of Mac OS X 10.4 (which is the forum you’ve posted in), would be going to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
If you’re using Mac OS X 10.3, as your profile indicates, you’ll probably have to use iSync for that, but the idea would be the same, i.e. first make sure the settings on the computer are as you want them to be, then reset the sync data stored on the server with the data stored on the computer.

Actually I have two questions. I am creating a memory sequence game and I was wondering:
1. Is there a way to random position movieclips on the stage without having them overlap each other?
2. Is there a way to have flash draw a vector line from one clip to another in sequence and then have the user retrace what flash did? I have 6 movieclips on the stage, each with their own instance (ex. obj1_mc, obj2_mc, etc.). Is there a way to tell flash to always draw a line between movieclips in sequence even though the movieclips are randomly placed on the stage?

Painting with a Layer Mask Advice

I created a layer mask that includes a person's face and a mask of a computer chip, so I can selectively paint parts of the chip onto his face, with the goal of making it seem as if the person is a robot. I am able to successfully create the mask and paint back from the mask, however, it does not look at all convincing. It just seems like the effect is sticking on the face.
1. Can anyone give me some advice for next steps to make it look more believable?
2. I'm playing with layer blending modes. Should I be selecting the image or its mask when applying the blending mode.

Look for a Photoshop tutorial on Displacement Map. If you want to have the circuited board contoured to his face. Place a dupe of the face image on top of the contoured board. Mask the face to show parts of the board, Add a layer style to the face layer like a drop shadow to add some depth.

Why doesn't Photoshop always generate a layer mask

I believe it was in CS4 that Adobe expanded the use of automatic layer masks ... perhaps it was with adjustment layers (I'm not quite sure)
I don't know about others, but it would save me considerable time in the long run if every new layer, (whether it is generated as a copy, from a plug-in, as a cut, or as a new blank layer) recevied an automatic layer mask. It takes no file space, but more often than not I find myself needing one. It sure would be nice to jump right into masking rather than having to first create the layer mask. Why did they stop at adjustment layers?
Am I alone in this?

Adding layers like Text, Raster and smart objects never have had automatic layers mask added. Adding adjustment layers always came with an automatic layer mask until CS4. Adode introduced bugs in CS4 when they added the adjustment panel these bugs have been carried forward into CS5 and CS6. Adobe added two options in the adjustment panels fly-out panel. These options are designed to be global, not just adjustment panel options. These options only work sometimes when changed from their default settings. When changed from their default settings they try to change Photoshop historic default operation. When you change Photoshop default operation Action, Scripts and Plug-ins that add adjustment layers may not work correctly. Adobe should fix Photoshop and remove the two bad Adjustment Panel fly-out options. The Adjustment Panel fly-out menu option to not add Layer masks can not be safely set, same goes for the option to always clip added layer mask, if you use Actions, Scripts and Plug-ins that add adjustment layers.

Photomerge no longer creating layer masks

Hello-
I've been using the automated photomerge function to create panoramas from multiple shots. Yesterday, everything was working fine. I was using the "auto" setting and checking the "blend images together box" and Photoshop would spit out a nice panorama with the images properly aligned and automatically generated layer masks to create a seemless image.
Today, however, Photoshop is misbehaving. Using these same settings, Photoshop aligns the images, but does not create any layer masks, resulting in much more noticeable seems between the individual component photographs. I haven't changed a single setting anywhere since yesterday.
I'm running Photoshop CS4 Extended on Windows Vista with 2GB RAM and plenty of scratch space on the hard drive as well as an Nvidia 8600gt graphics card.
I'm quite confused as to what's going on, as every tutorial and help document explicitly mentions the layer masks as part of the final product in this automated task. Does anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences that might be helpful?

You might have some small values entered in the height, width or resolution boxes.
See if resetting the Crop Tool solves the issue.
With the Crop Tool selected click on the small downturned arrow and choose Reset Tool
After you crop can you see the cropped image on the screen or is it in the layers panel your talking about?
