Creating a link to a word doc

I'm having trouble creating a link to a word doc on my computer.
I select "enable as hyperlink" and then "Link to file".
I select the the word doc on my computer. It didn't create a link to the file.
Hmmmm... then I tried it with a pdf. Still no link.
Do I need to have a pdf ? The document was created with microsoft word.
However I also tried it with an old Adobe pdf file.. still no go.
Any thoughts? I'm using an old version of iWeb 1.1.2
Thanks.

No.

That should work too.
NOTE: Links to files aren't testable within iWeb — they become active when published and viewed in a browser.
An alternative approach is to post MS Word docs (or PDFs) to the free Posterous where they'll be automatically presented in a convenient viewer, e.g.
http://dont-panic.posterous.com/pdf-document-example
...Then in iWeb set up a simple text or image hyperlink to that particular Posterous blog entry.

  • Link to a Word doc in a PDF is not opening the doc in Internet Exlorer 8

I have a PDF created in Acrobat 9 Pro, I have given a link to a word doc. The PDF and link is working perfectly on browsers other than Internet Explorer 8.
In IE-8 Even if allow to open the doc when prompted, nothing happens.
    How can I fix this?

Dropbox has a convenient feature to preview DOC files as PDFs in Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. It's convenient but can lead to this problem that you end up downloading the document as a PDF instead of a DOC file.
As long as the recipient uses the Download button on Dropbox's toolbar above the viewer (see attached screen shot comparison), the recipient should get the original format instead of the preview.
    Is that the issue?

  • Creating a pdf from a word doc and the image and footer will not show

I am trying to create a pdf from a word doc that has an image and footer. Neither will show in the pdf. Also getting this message "Adobe Acrobat Updater has not been able to check for updates recently. Check online to see if solutions are available from the Adobe website." My Cloud says it is updated.

    What was the Original?
If it was from Word, chances are the top and bottom Margins were set too narrow. (should not be less than .5 inches even more safety 1" would be better). As for graphics. Check in Word preferences (may be called different in a windows machine) make sure in view and Print settings "Graphics" is checked (show Graphics and Print Graphics).

  • Font changes when i try to create a pdf from a word doc

I am trying to create a pdf from a word doc. I have tried multiple times and each time i do the font i used in the word doc gets changed on the pdf

This seems to be a common problem... this is not the first time I have seen this. Unless it is a general system font, such as Arial, then it seems not to convert too well.
So, if it doesn't matter what font, then just change the font.
Hopefully, Adobe fixes this in the next year. xD
    Good luck

  • I am having a problem where pdf files on the web (i.e., links in a Word doc) open after an extended time and only as gobbldygook ( a file containing a series of characters and letters that make no sense).  This also happens for another Mac user coworker

Hi There:  I am having a problem where pdf files on the web (i.e., links in a Word doc) open after an extended time and only as gobbldygook ( a file containing a series of characters and letters that make no sense).  This also happens for another Mac user coworker in my office, while the PCs don't have this problem...  Any help/suggestions for a fix would be most appreciated!

Just adding more info - MacBookPro running 10.5.8 and using Safari as the browser.  The problem comes and goes - sometimes the linked Word files will open OK, n others its just a strring of crazy characters...

  • Creating Links From Converted Word docs

i converted a Word docx document to HTML that is comprised of a set of docs that are linked together.
Consequently each section in the complete doc, (except the Title and Table of contents), actually becomes a modifiable JPG text box.
I have been trying to create links from the Table of Contents to the individual sections.
I have tried everything but I am missing some concept.  It's one of those things if I just see it once I'll slap myself over head fro not fiquring it out.
Anyone have an answer for me

I hate to burst your bubble, but Word docs are not suitable for web pages.  My advice is to PDF your docx.

  • Preserving HTML links when converting Word docs

I created a document in MS Word for Mac 2011 (ver 14.5.2)
When I used Adobe Pro 11 to convert the document into pdf format, all the HTML links are lost.
I have tried converting from MS Word, opening the word version with Adobe Pro, printing from MS Word to pdf.  Nothing works. Even opened the MS Word document using Apple's Pages software, re-formatted and then converted to pdf.  Still no live links.
Best work around so far is to convert and then use the edit feature in Adobe Pro to re-insert the HTML links as invisible rectangles on top of the still-blue-and- underlined text.  So to the user it looks like the html links are still live, but what a pain for editor.
I have seen this issue raised in other posts, but none of the answers seem to work. And the work around described above is clearly less than ideal.
Very curious, as reading other posts, the issue apparently does not arise when the word doc converted from a Wintel computer.  But I can't imagine Adobe writes software one way for Intel and another for Mac.

Imagine it. this has been 15 year fued between Microsoft and Adobe.  Adobe Claims that Mac office doesn't hav ethe proper hooks for URLs. Microsoft says the fault is with adobe.
Since a Word Created file will work when opened in the windows version  and saved as a PDF, the links work just fine. Just opening and not saving, but converted to Pdf does nothing to the actual Word File.
They had it fixed last year  in Acrobat X if your dropped the file on to Acroabt directly. But broke it again with the upgrade to XI.
IF you have iWork and Open the word file in Pages then exported as a Word.docx file then create The PDF the links will become active.  Also if you Open in OpenOffice and export as docx file the resulting PDF when open in Word and PDF is Created the links will become active.
If you have neither you will have to open the PDF and add the links. Note the Links will be hot (active) but the links will not turn Blue and  be Underlined
Mac Office2011 is a Conversion of Office2010/2007 code.  So there should be no pproblem.
Also Don't use the Save As . . .  PDF Method. Instead go to Print Menu  click on PDF wait for context menu > the choos Adobe Quality PDF or Adobe PDF (uses Adobe's PDF engine).
wait for next screen that shows qualtity leave as sent unles you need specific job options. click okay then next screen File name. Rename as necessary the browser to desired to location then click save.  Or you can drop the saved Word document (with Word quit.) on to Acrobat and after a minute or so the PDF will be created. (Using this method in AcrobatX would actully show URL s or Mailtos as active - They broke this in Acrobat XI PDF still can be created but hot links no longer work).
Well it seems it does work on occasion  see: http://www.screencast.com/t/cib2kcYG

  • Clicking a link to a Word doc and it tries to open it with Adobe Acrobat

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4 on my Windows XP Pro SP3 machine. I have Microsoft Office 2007 and Adobe Acrobat 9.4.3 and Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) installed. I clicked on a link to a MS Word doc and I got a dialog box asking what I wanted to open it with. The default option is Adobe Acrobat 9.4.3, which, of course fails with an error message saying it is not a supported file type. I looked at the other options and Microsoft Word is not among them.

Save the Word document. Create your email in your normal mail application (Mail?), click on the add attachment icon (the paperclip if you are using Mail). Navigate to where you saved the Word file and select it. It should now appear as an attachment in your email. If you are sending it to a PC user and you are using Mail make sure 'Send Windows-friendly attachments' is selected in the edit menu. And if you don't want the attachment to display inline within the body of the email Control+Click on it and select 'view as icon'.

  • Linking to a Word doc

I am trying to create a link to open a Word document from my
FlashHelp file. I am using Insert Hyperlink, selecting 'File' in
'Link To' and then I select the doc to link to and 'Display in
frame:' 'New Window'. If I then select 'View Selected Item' from
the toolbar and select the link a dialog asks me to Open or Save
the doc. Selecting Open shows the doc in the preview window.
When I generate the help and select the link nothing happens
although right-clicking on the link and selecting the properties
shows the correct path to where the file is located. If I
right-click and select 'Save Target As' I can succesfsully save the
doc. So the link 'knows' where the file is (in the 'SSL!/FlashHelp'
folder) so why can't it open it? I'm using X5.0.2 build 801, IE6
and Flash Player 8. I've tried amending my secrity settings in
Flash Player and IE. I have previously used the same method to link
to HTM files that open SWF files created by Captivate with no
    problems.

Hi robosteve and welcome to our community
If memory serves me correctly, the issue is with something
called the "Mark of the Web", otherwise known as MOTW. I think this
impairs linking. You might be able to work past it by creating a
totally new page that doesn't have MOTW, then causing that page to
redirect to the desired document file. I used to use this technique
all the time when I was an Intranet Web Developer. I discovered a
nice side effect of this approach. I found that even on a fast
intranet, it took much longer than I liked for Word documents and
PDF content to open. So I would regularly link to them in this
manner. This is because I could redirect and while the user waited,
I could plop a message on the screen that told them the process
would take a moment and to be patient. Otherwise, with the old way,
they would constantly click repeatedly thinking the browser locked
up. When in reality, it was simply taking a longer time than I
liked for the document to display.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Adobe Acrobat X Pro: Create PDF Portfolio not previewing Word docs

    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement:
Word documents won't preview on an Adobe PDF Portfolio, while other Office documents (Excel, PowerPoint, etc) will. It only shows a Word icon on the preview and you have to double-click the file to open it on actual word. This is not the way Acrobat is supposed to behave.
NOTE: Adobe Acrobat 10.1.2 (latest version) and Office 2010 Suite w/ SP1 installed.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create a PDF Portfolio
    2. Add Word (.doc, .docx) files to the Portfolio
    3. Click on Preview and you will see a Word icon instead of a thumbnail preview.
    Results:
You will see a word icon
    Expected results:
A thumbnail preview of the document like it happens with Excel, PowerPoint, etc...
Can you guys reproduce this error? What do you think?

Here is what I am talking about...
Those files should be previewed and not just display a thumbnail with a Word icon.

    Hello,
I am having an odd problem when attempting to drop/create or alter my index after entering certain MS Word docs in my table.

  • Having issues created a .pdf from a Word .doc.

I tried converting a Word doc today, and was given the error "Missing PDF file maker. Do you want to run this in repair mode?  I click yes, it scans (for several minutes) then no document.  A document icon appears on the opening page, yet when you click on it, it says: ERROR – this document cannot be found."
I tried two other documents I scanned into PDF files – both from excel sheets – no problem. Since this was installed I haven't had any issues until recently. I cannot think of anything that has changed since then.
Is it possible this is a problem with Word?

Well I'm having the same issue. Right now I have a very simple, one page Word doc I want to PDF before emailing. I hit print, chose PDF, picked where I wanted to save file, then . . . Adobe starts to open Word - but only the "title page" comes up and hangs for . . . ever. Adobe says "Please wait, reading PDF file . . . ".
When I open Task Manager - it shows both Word and Adobe PDF as running.
I checked for updates. I can't think of what to do next?
I can chose Adobe PDF in my print menu, I have  new laptop running Windows 7 and Microsoft Home Premiere 2010.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm doing a 'favor' for my mother's friend, now both of them are calling wondering what is taking me so long : }

  • Hi, I have Adobe Acrobat Professional.  I need to know how to create multi-links on 300 page docs

I need to know how to create multi-links on a 300 page document, showing "return to main Menu".  Ideally placed on the bottom right of each page. I have adobe acrobat Professional.

Import a picture to be a button, place it, activate HYPERLINK tool, draw a rectangle around the whole button, in the window popping up select the link behaviour, submit with OK.
Then copy & paste the button object to every page. I don't know whether pasting it on every of the 300 pages can be automated, but if not, it is still done quite fastly.

  • Creating pdf forms from a Word doc that will need to be edited in the future

Ok, I searched everywhere for an answer to this situation... and I want to know if there is a work around.
Basically, I have a word document. I will use this Word document to create a application form. So I will manually create fields where needed after I convert the document to pdf.
Now here is the issue... at some point, the Word document will have to be changed... maybe a date or an address or something. This would mean I would have to change the original Word document, re-create the form (adding all the fields again) and re-publish it.
Can I somehow edit the text in the pdf (with the fields already in place) without having to change the original word file and re-create the form?
Has anyone had this problem? Am I doing something wrong? Or is there an assumption that the original Word document you use to create your form (pdf) will not be changed at a later date?
    Thanks.
    Quinn

Ok, sorry if I haven't quite figured this out.
When I create a pdf form, AA can detect some fields and automatically creates them. This is great. For other fields, I have to create them. No problem.
So here I have Document A (MS Word) and my new pdf form (Document B).
I edit Document A and change the date in the header let's say. I re-create my pdf form (Document C).
How will Document C remember to re-associate the fields I created in Document B? Won't I have to start all over again?
This is my question. If the answer is no, then I just have to hope that when I create the new form, AA can figure out as many fields as possible (and selection choices such as bullet, check marks, etc).
    Thanks again for your help.
    Quinn
