Creating a logo

Hello,
I have read on this forum that using Indesign CS3 to create a logo is not as effective as using Illustrator. However, to purchase Illustrator and to go through a learning curve would be a significant effort on my part.
Therefore as I am now fairly familiar with Indesign and Photoshop, I was wondering if I could use these applications in conjunction with a couple of less expensive logo making applications? And if so, can anyone recommend another Logo creation program I can use with Indesign CS3?
I am currently using AAA Logo and another application called Logosmartz. I believe these applications can get some of the different brush strokes, gradients, and opacities that possibly Indesign cannot.
Additionally, are they are symbols in both the Indesign and Photoshop libraries that I could possibly import? If so can someone point me to the URL that I can grab these?
Thanking you in advance,
Bob

Actually, InDesign can do quite a bit as far as logo creation is concerned. No, you don't have Illustrator's pattern fills, brushes, blends or multiple strokes, but you can fake a lot of that stuff if you only need to do it occasionally and you are willing to spend some time.
I was doing some on-site training the other day at a local company where they have only ID and Photoshop Elements and discovered the only logo they had was done in Photoshop. It consists of nothing but type and some simple shapes. I did a quick version in ID that's 100% vector (so it's scalable for anything from letterhead to trade show displays) and can be easily edited inside ID for color and saved out as a PDF (or even, cringe, .eps) if it needs to go someplace besides a new ID document.

  • Could you give some advice on creating a logo?

    Hi!
I wonder if anyone would have a moment to give me a few pointers... I'm a competent amateur photoshop user with a good background in design, and I'm about to create the branding, website and brochure for a small company I'm starting up with my partner. For now I'll just be creating the website using wordpress, weeble or similar as I don't have access to dreamweaver or muse and want to keep the whole process simple to start with.
I'm about to create the logo which I will then use on the website, to create headed paper (for invoices, letters etc), in our brochure, in email signatures, etc. My question is, in what format should I create the logo? If make it as a vector will it size up and down for any purpose? Or will I need both a vector and image version, and if so which should I use where? I'm most proficient with photoshop but I do have illustrator too, though I'm considerably slower using it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Jenny,
In addition to what Michael said, you may use Illustrator (or a similar application), and you should consider whether you are having things printed by a printing company (using CMYK) or you are having them printed on office printers (more likely from what I gather).
In the former case, you may consider creating the artwork using CMYK colours for greatest possible colour consistency. In the latter case, you are (probably) better served with RGB colours. In Illustrator this is called Document Color Mode. CMYK colours are inherently duller than RGB colours, so if you have the best/brightest web version as top priority, you should use RGB in any case, knowing that the printed stuff will be a duller representation, unless you have (access to) a special printer that has more colours than CMYK; in this case, RGB is also the obvious choice.
Apart from that, you may consider creating the artwork with points/pixels as the unit, and set it at the largest planned size in pixels. This is especially important for crispness of non photo raster images such as PNG24 (which is better than PNG8 and GIF): when you create the artwork for web and similar, it is important that you fill whole pixels to the highest possible degree.
Illustrator actually has pixels as a unit identical to a point and equalling 1/72 of an inch, which may be a bit confusing until you get used to it.
For actual logo, and other artwork, creation in Illustrator, you may ask in this forum:

  • How to create a logo for a program?

    Hi,
I want to create a logo panel that loads up initially when the program starts.(similiar to IE or netscape or any software). Then goes into the program. How would you go about doing so? I have try to create a frame and turning off the resize feature, center the frame on to the screen. But having problems with removing the title bar, is there any formal way of doing so? thanks

It's called a 'splash screen'. You might do a search for it.
A JFrame without any decorations is a JWindow.

  • Creating a logo in Pages - a way to save and resize?

I created a logo in Pages using a few text box, some text and various shapes and colors. I created it at the largest size I think I'll be using it at (quite large, a few feet across) and now I want to use it in several other, smaller instances. I grouped it all together, but when I resize the box, the type stays the same size and so everything gets out of place.
Is there a way in Pages to save an object such as I've created here, and be able to resize it in correct proportions etc, including any type use, so that I can use it in various sizes etc?
    thanks!

Save to disk as PDF Portable Document Format, drag from disk into design space (: Pages document), and apply geometric manipulations in Quartz imaging model including resizing, rotating etc etc.

  • Creating transparent logos help?

    Hi,
I've been working through this tutorial
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-complete-picture-with-julieanne-kost/pscs5-creating-transpar ent-logos-for-watermarks-and-overlays-in-photoshop/
But as I have upgraded to Photoshop CC I am having a few issues.
I have done everything in the tutorial, but when I come to use my custom shape if I just click on my image a pop up box appears that says 'Create custom shape' with boxes to fill in the pixel sizes, and two check boxes 'from centre or preserve proportions'.
If I click and drag this box doesn't come up, instead the custom shape is put down ok but the little path squares are on. If I click on a different layer they go away, but when I click on the shape layer they come back again! How do I make it so that my custom shape appears like a normal image?
I've got shape selected in the drop down box.
I have just discovered the properties box, if I click on the shape path it changes to the normal shape, is there a way to make that the default?
I also want to apply the layer style and have tried saving a new tool preset. But the layer style won't save on it. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
    Any tips greatly appreciated.

When you click on the document without dragging, the pop up appears as it want to know what size the shape should be at that location. Thats why it does not appear when you drag, as that drag tells photoshop what size the shape should be.
What I think maybe happening, is you have the custom shape tool set to path instead of shape. In the top tool bar on the left side of the screen you will see (second icon in) a drop box or 3 icons (depending on your version) If a drop box click it and select shape, if 3 icons click the left icon not the middle or right.
The shape option is also the default, so if you can not figure it out you can click right click on the very first icon in the top tool bar and select reset tool or reset all tools.
Layer style do not save in the tool presets, those presets are for the tools not the object. What you need to do is open the styles panel (window>style) Then save your preset there. Either click on the new icon at the bottom of the styles panel or click inside the panel.

  • Can I use Adobe Illustrator symbol to create a logo identity?

Is it allowed to use an Adobe Illustrator default symbol (which is normally supplied with the program in the symbols library) to create a logo for a non-for-profit organisation? Is there a contact in Adobe for such enquiries to be officially addressed?
    Many thanks,

Thanks, Mylenium. Actually it is for a non-for-profit ogranisation and I am not charging anything for it, it is totally on a probono basis. Also the symbol has been modified from its original form in terms of colour.

Read the Adobe EULA, section 2.7. Basically it says (in human language) that you can use any of the files that come with Adobe programs in your own work as long as you don't sell them 1:1, i.e. it's okay to use a symbol as part of a logo, but not use a unmodified symbol alone and sell it to clients.

  • I created a logo in photoshop, i rasterized some of the font to edit.. the logo is perfect and crisp

i created a logo in photoshop, i rasterized some of the font to edit.. the logo is perfect and crisp in photoshop, its set to 300 dpi. i was told by factory that will be printing the logo that it will be done through illustartor and when i open with illustrator the rasterized text and other text are not clear but when i set the dpi to 72 dpi it is clear in illustrator. my question is will this photoshop file print clearly at 300 dpi with illustrator?

Trying to resolve problems like this with only generic input is difficult. It is much better if you were to provide screen shots of your particular documents or other numeric data. Under the circumstances, here is the best advice I can offer.
Within Photoshop the "dpi" setting (should be ppi or pixels per inch) is only meta data that comes into play when you try and produce a print of some sort. Since you are intending to print, this setting matters, but the pixel count in the image also matters. What you should do is first determine your print size, lets say 3 inches by 2 inches as an example. At 300 pixels per inch  you want to create your Photoshop document to be 900 pixels by 300 pixels.
Create your logo artwork and text within Photshop. Ideally, both would be vector entities, that is, made up of shape layers and normal text layers. The text should not be rasterized unless there is some compelling need. If you do something like warping text it will remain vectorized in Photoshop, but will be rasterized when digested by Illustrator. You can then save your psd file and it should print fine at its intended size, from Illustrator.  When you open the psd file into Illustrator choose the "Convert Layers to Objects" option otherwise it will enter as a single layer image (rasterized). I suggest you make test prints with your desktop printer using both Photoshop & Illustrator
to monitor the results of using Illustrator as a print engine. I would typically do the opposite and use Photoshop as a print engine for Illustrator documents.

  • Created a logo in CS3 & can't convert it for other uses

    Hi,
I created some logos for a small business to choose from.  He wanted me to take parts from two of them and make a new logo - and, oh yeah... "can you add lightning to it too??"  :-)   I did what he asked, but since I thought it looked a bit wild for a logo, I didn't pay a whole lot of attention while creating it.  I showed it to him (along with an another option I really liked) and he fell in love with the wild and crazy lightning logo.  I gave him a copy for his invoices, business cards, etc and have been working on the website.  Well... he really likes the logo and he now wants T-shirts printed and he wants to get his truck "wrapped" with it too.  My problem is...  I made the logo in Fireworks CS3 and added the lightning with Alien Skin Xenofex 2 - Electrify.  It is currently in .png format at 300 DPI.  The layer with the lightning (and "HID") however, was converted into a .bmp when I applied the electrify filter.  The printing companies all want the image in .psd, .ai or .pdf format.  When I convert it to .psd, I lose the Fireworks specific filters that were applied on "Get" and "Lights" and when I enlarge it, the layer with the lightning gets pixelated because I am trying to enlarge a .bmp.
I foolishly didn't write down the settings I used on the lightning filter so when I try to reproduce it, I can't even come close.  There is a 4 digit random seed generator that throws everything off.  I know I should have been more careful when creating the logo, but does anyone have any idea how I can come up with a printable, enlargeable version of my logo?  I did convert it to a .pdf file, but I suspect that it is still going to have the pixelation problems when it is enlarged.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

I kinda figured I was stuck... but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks for taking the time to answer!
By the way, honesty isn't an issue here.  I warned him in the beginning that choosing that logo was going to result in printing problems in the future.  Sometimes trying too hard to please a client gets you in as much trouble as not trying hard enough!  I've been doing this way too many years to make a "rookie" error like this, but I guess I just got a little cocky thinking I knew what was best.  I properly created the logo I thought he would choose and stupidly made a piece of artwork to illustrate why the lightning logo wouldnt work.  I really do know better than to show a client a piece of work that I am not prepared for him to choose - I just got stupid for a bit.  I am definitely paying the price now though!
The client is a really, really nice guy though.  It's fun to work with someone who is so excited about his new business.  I will make this work for him because that is the way I am.  I would never tell a client - I told you this would be a problem - and leave him holding the bag.  I should have never shown him that logo in that condition, so it's my mess and I have to clean it up.  I'm certainly going to lose money on this job, but outside of this logo mess, at least it's a fun job!
    Thanks again,
    Lisa

  • Using Illustrator fonts to create a logo. Is it Legal?

Hey, I am currently creating a logo using many different fonts on illustrator. The logo will used for my website, and the logo will be implemented on t-shirts that will sell on the website. Is it fine to use the logos on illustrator to create my Logo. What exactly are the legals behind. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could answer this question for me. Thanks.

I'd like to develop a little bit, though you already had good answers.
    1) Illustrator has pre-installed fonts that you can use freely;
    2) if you are on Illustrator CC or CC2014 you can download more fonts from Typekit that are too free to use;
    3) If you are downloading a lot of fonts from different websites you have to check the creative common license or whatever instruction the typographers have in their own website. There are condition on commercial or non-commercial use. So some fonts would be ok to use for your logo, but you cannot gain money on the font - if you think twice it is quite normal as it would sound like you designed it while you just imported it from other websites. Some typographers create and don't mind about what you do with the fonts but it is such a minority that I would suggest you as a routine to have a file saved on your documents about the fonts you download and go this way:
grab the link to the site
copy the name of the font
check the agreement on the websites page for each font, if they differ
Very important is to go back once in a while and assure that the license terms are still the same, as it might happen that the typografer makes changes in the arch of years. Also a very good advice is to reach out and speak personally to the typografer and inform you are using this or that font for your illustration, make sure he or she agrees with your intentions and see that you're good with each other. Going this way you can even give yourself a chance for future cooperation.

  • Purchase Order and GR document Output Determination and creating own logo o

For the logo on documents, you have to take help of ABAP ppl.
    Output of Purchase Order
    1. Condition Table
SPRO > Material Management> Purchasing -> Message -> Output Control->Condition Tables->Define Condition Table for Purchase Order
    Select:
    Purchasing Doc. Type,
    Purch. Organization,
    Vendor
    2. Access Sequences
SPRO -> Material Management-> Purchasing -> Message -> Output Control->Access Sequences->Define Condition Table for Purchase Order
    3. Message Type
SPRO -> Material Management-> Purchasing -> Message -> Output Control->Message Types->Define Message Type for Purchase Order
    *4. Message Determination Schemas*
    4.1. Message Determination Schemas
SPRO -> Material Management-> Purchasing -> Message -> Output Control->Message Schema->Define Message Schema for Purchase Order-> Maintain Message Determination Schema
4.2. Assign Schema to Purchase Order
SPRO -> Material Management-> Purchasing -> Message -> Output Control->Message Schema->Define Message Schema for Purchase Order-> Assign Schema to Purchase Order
    5. Partner Roles per Message Type
SPRO -> Material Management-> Purchasing -> Message -> Output Control-> Partner Roles per Message Type ->Define Partner Role for Purchase Order
    6. Condition Record
    Navigation Path: SAP Menu-> Logistics -> Material Management -> Purchasing-> Master data->Messages-> Purchase Order-> MN04-> Create
Now you create PO (ME21N) and save it. Go to ME22N and print the PO by giving output type.
    Output of GR
After setting table, access sequence and output type for GR,run MB02 transaction, enter material document number. Double click one line item and select messages. Separate screen will be opened to configure outputs. Give the required fields and save the document.
Now Run MB90, you can take printout. Output Type: WE03 or WE01 or WE02
