Creating a new catalog

I have a catalog that I want to divide into two.  Do I have to create a new catalog and then import all the photos in the new catalog (that are already in the first catalog) into the new one all over again?

Usually it is not a good idea to have muliple catalogs. You can tag individual pictures, and/or create albums. You may want to review the following:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ElementsOrganizer/8.0/Win/Using/WSae2ea3b149d0c3591ae939f10386 0b3d59-7e7a_WIN.html
There is a place for multiple catalogs, e.g. when the organizer is utilized for personal pictures and also for business related pictures.
I am sure that others will offer their thoughts as well.

  • How can I select 5-star photos in one catalog and use them to create a new catalog

I've been using Lightroom since LR1. I now have several LR 5.5 catalogs generally organized by year and camera. I want to create a new catalog which will contain my best from each catalog. BUT, I don't want to remove the photos from their "home" catalog. The photos will continue to reside in both their original catalog and in the new "Portfolio" catalog. The easiest way to approach this is to filter photos in catalog "A" by rating, select all 5-star photos and create a new catalog containing just the selection. I don't want to export or remove them from their catalog or move them on disk. I want them to appear in BOTH catalogs. Since Lightroom is built on a database that merely points to image files, it seems like this should be possible.
I realize I can create an empty catalog and select File->Import from Another Catalog... , then locate the photos one at a time by name and location clicking the import checkbox - tedious is an understatement when you have several 10's of thousands of photos.
    Any ideas?

Yes, that's an option I've considered. But as with any database, size is inversely proportional to speed - larger database equals slower performance. LR 5 is much better than earlier versions in this regard but when you reach 100,000 images you can feel it.
This is incorrect. I accept that you think the database is getting slower, but the database (and really all databases) are designed to work pretty much the same regardless of the number of records, except for perhaps searching through the entire catalog. We have seen in this forum people who are now editing larger RAW files than a few years ago, they see it is slower, and decide it is the size of the database, rather than the size of their photos.
What aspects of Lightroom are slow? If it's scrolling and displaying the previews and searching, then it might be the database. If its displaying images in the Develop module, it is NOT the database at all.
Have you taken steps to improve the performance of the database, such as Optimizing it regularly? have you tried these performance tips: FAQ: Experiencing Performance related problems in Lightroom?

  • Can a plugin create a new catalog file based on the current (or a specified source) catalog?

A little background: I've been looking for a tool that would allow me to host my photos from my network at home, but let me search my lightroom database (mainly by date, keyword, metadata, or location) on mobile devices (e.g. iPhone or iPad).  There are a lot of services that provide publishing to cloud storage (e.g. Google Drive, icloud, etc.) and have companion apps, but I've found their search capabilities lacking and I'd rather just source the files from home.  In my mind what I need is an even lighter weight SQLite database that contains the catalog information I want (and only that info) that I can sync with an app on my phone/tablet.  I could also have a directory of very small previews that could also be synced.  When I want a file I can select it and various higher resolution versions (up to and including the original file) could be stored in a local cache on the portable device.  I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
In order to do this I need this lighter weight catalog file.  I was going to write a perl or swift (I'm writing this for OS X) script that used SQLite to pull the relevant data out of my catalog and generate the new mini-catalog, but I figured I should give the Lightroom SDK a shot.  I've never developed for Lightroom before and I don't know Lua, but I've got some time to learn.  The first thing I thought I should check out was to see if anyone had built a plugin that did what I'm hoping to do.  If so I could save a lot of time.  I figured this forum would be a good place to check to see if anyone knows of such a plugin.  If so, please let me know.  I'd much appreciate it.  If it's not possible, that would be good to know too.
    Thanks,
    David

I doubt there is a way to create a new catalog via plugin (without some serious stunt - i.e. nothing in SDK supports it), and remember - open/active catalog is locked (sql will fail), so you can only do the script if Lr is closed or has a different catalog open.

  • Upon creating a new catalog, all files are renamed with a postfix: "-2"?

My catalog was corrupted, and i decided to create a new catalog from cratch.
To my big surprise alle falenames was renamed from IMG_xxxx.cr2 to IMG_xxxx-2.cr2. Why?
This is i problem sice i still god the old catalog, and try to recover some of the old editorial settings, but since alle files are renamed the are no longer visible in the old catalog. just about 15.000 files are renamed!

Lightroom only adds suffixes when it finds files of the same name in a location it's moving or copying too.
What option did you use on Import? Copy/Add/Move?

  • How can I create a new catalog of all my photos with no develop adjustments?

I use Lightroom 4.3.  I tried this by deleting the old catalog, and creating a new one, thinking that the develop adjustments would no longer exist after first deleting the old catalog.  The develop adjustments were still there.  (I deleted the catalog out of the lightroom sub-folder of My Pictures.)
The reason that I want to do this is that I have one folder (of about 800 important photos) where something went very wrong in Lightroom, and every time I try to pull up one of the photos my whole computer stalls.  Everything works beautifully in my other folders.  I even re-installed Lightroom.  I want to re-add those dng photos without the develop adjustments.  It doesn't bother me if none of my files have develop adjustments.  I save all of my files after they are adjusted.  I save the DNGs also.
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

One easy way: reset after importing (which can be done from library module - e.g. main menu, context menu, quick-develop...). If you can't even get that far, consider using exiftool to strip the xmp from DNGs and/or jpegs, or just delete xmp sidecar file in case of proprietary raw.

  • My Lightroom won't export sharp. I have tried everything including creating a new catalog. Is there a bug?

Okay...so I am wondering if there is a bug. I have tried changing the settings as far as sharpening for screen/matte...etc...tried to start a new catalog. Same thing. I am scared to uninstall and reinstall because i already have it on two computers. I don't have the actual cd to download as I did it through the internet. Will it be able to install it again after uninstalling?

    Lr5.4
Thanks. Unfortunately, all nr/sharpening bugs are supposedly fixed @Lr5.4.
So if seemingly not fixed, it begs the question:
    * Is it you? or is it Lightroom?
Does it work as expected in a previous version of Lightroom? (you double-check by downloading and installing a previous version of Lightroom..).
Consider posting a zip file containing:
    * one-photo catalog with source file (export one photo as catalog).
    * export preset (.lrtemplate file in Export Presets folder along with the rest of your presets/preferences..).
so others can try to reproduce.
If forum upload feature not working for you (it hasn't for me yet), you can use dropbox or yousendit.com.

  • LR6 on Mac won't start unless I have it create a new catalog

On my MacBook Pro, I can get LR6 to start if I beforehand remove the catalog it previously opened. However, if I quit LR6 afterwards, it will always go straight into the crash reporting dialog. Lightroom 5 works without any issues..

  • Can't create new catalog in Lightroom 3.6

All of a sudden, Lightroom 3.6 won't create a new catalog for me. It worked for years but stopped working for no reason I can figure.  I fill in the new catalog name in the dialog, click Save, then Lighroom restarts but  tells me it can't find the new catalog name I just created.  When I look in Explorer, I see that the folder has been created, but the catalog files were not.
Also, Lightroom didn't remember the last catalog opened when it starts.  To test this, I located and opened a previous catalog, made some changes and quit Lightroom.  When I restarted, it did not recall the previous catalog, but opened a much older one.  I went to Edit->Preferences and changed the "open" setting to "Prompt me" (for a catalog name on open) but that didn't stick either.   So we've developed some anomolies here.  Can anyone help? TIA.

I would suggest removing or renaming the Preference file and letting a new one be rebuilt. Can solve all manner of weird issues.

  • Three questions about dealing with and creating new catalogs

I have 3 catalog related challenges.
    1) I loaded an entire batch of images into the wrong catalog...an existing one.
Can I simply remove them from that catalog in bulk?
    2) For some reason I can't get LR to create a new catalog that I name after
a specific job. Should I use File|New Catalog or Import? Something else?
    3) LR launches with the same catalog open every time. I have unchecked the
preferences box that tells it to do that. I want it to open with NO catalog
everytime. What setting am I missing?
    Thanks for the input.

    1) I loaded an entire batch of images into the wrong catalog...an existing one.
Can I simply remove them from that catalog in bulk?
Yes, select all of the images you want to remove then hit the delete or backspace key. The following dialog will open and you should choose Remove - don't be tempted to choose Delete from Disk or you images will be sent to trash.
    2) For some reason I can't get LR to create a new catalog that I name after
a specific job. Should I use File|New Catalog or Import? Something else?
To name a Catalog after a specific job/project/shoot you should use File>New Catalog. A dialog will open and you can enter the name in the field labelled Save As.
    3) LR launches with the same catalog open every time. I have unchecked the
preferences box that tells it to do that. I want it to open with NO catalog
everytime. What setting am I missing?
Launching Lightroom so that it opens with no catalog you need to choose the preference Prompt me when starting Lightroom as shown below.

  • Lightroom 5 will not let me create new catalogs anymore???

I've been using Lightroom for a while now (since Version 3) and now all of the sudden it is failing to allow me to create new catalogs onto my drive. It will go as far as letting me select a destination and create a new folder and then nothing further. I am at a loss and it's probably an easy fix I am overlooking. Ideas?

These are the two screens I get when I go to create a new catalog. I can do nothing further after this stage.

  • AIS freezes when trying to create a new metadata catalog

    Hi,
I'm really new in EIS/AIS. We are using EIS and Essbase version 9.3.1. I just created a new odbc connection to our data warehouse (Oracle in OraHome92). I tried to create a new catalog but EIS freezes. When I tried to "end task" the console, it closes and would get a message "olapbldr error". Need to know how to fix this. • How can I add the presets to new catalog or sync info to both catalogs?

I have lightroom on my main laptop was advised to create a new catalog on my external (my laptop is almost out of space). I just upload some presets to lightroom,--when I use my Lightroom catalog on my external the presets are not loaded at all. How can I add the presets or sync both catalogs. Thank you

Listener can be added to a cell editor, not cell renderer.
Set relevent cess(s) to setEditable == true when you use your custom cell editor.

  • Anything wrong with starting a new catalog

I use PSE3. I have over 9,000 pics in My Catalog. I was thinking the turn of the year would be a good opportunity to begin a new catalog. But I vaguely recall that some think that's not a good idea. I can see that there could be inconvenience if I wanted to go into the first catalog frequently but my plan is not to. So is there any reason not to?

A 2nd catalog is usually not a good idea. It defeats the purpose of a catalog, and prevents you from do a search for photos when some of the photos you want to see are in the first catalog, and some of the photos you want to see are in the second catalog. By creating a 2nd catalog, you are basically creating more work for yourself, and in the future, there is no easy way to combine the catalogs should you decide to do so.
While there are some good reasons for creating a 2nd catalog (for example, you have completely non-overlapping sets of photos, such as personal and work), the fact that you now have over 9000 photos is a terrible reason to create a new catalog. I have 15K photos in my catalog, which works fine, and there are reports of catalogs with 50K photos that work properly.
A good idea to keep your catalog "healthy" is to compact it regularly. In PSE5, that would be done via File->Catalog->Recover. I don't know what the command is for PSE3.

  • I I am trying to start a new catalog in the organizer and up loaded new elements

Iam having trouble with PSE 11.  I uploaded new elements to day from PSE Basics and Beyond.  It said it uploaded 100% but I COULD  not go any further.  the screen just froze.  What is wrong?  THis is the first time I have tried to use the organizer in 11.  I checked not to import from version 10..  What do I do?

Start PSE to get to the Welcome screen.
Hold down the Ctrl + Shift keys and click Organizer. Keep holding down the keys until you see the Catalog window.
Select your catalog and click Repair.  Select “repair anyway” even if PSE doesn’t find problems.
Then for good measure, click Optimize.
If repairing resolves your issue then fine else repeat the above steps, but click New to create a new catalog.  If you’re able to import photos into the new catalog and the Organizer works fine, then problem can be old catalog.
    - Try launching Organizer directly from the exe with Admin rights.
    Thanks

  • Lightroom 5 hangs on import.  New catalog, from local disk and from SD card.

    Lightroom 5.7.1
    Windows 7 64bit.
    SSD, i5 16gb RAM
jpg or dng from Pextax K3
When importing photos to my catalog the import process hangs and doesn't import anything.
    I have tried:
    Deleting preference file
Importing from Desktop, Folder on HD, SD Card
Folder without Anything but 1 photo
    Folder with Many photos
Created a new catalog and moved all photos across - the problem briefly went away and now is back.
7000 photos in this new temp catalog, but now the problem exists in my main (65k+) and temp (7k) catalogs.

    Things to try:
Detach all USB devices except mouse, keyboard, external hard drives (in other words, phones and tablets and anything else), try importing
Temporarily disconnect from internet, disable virus checker and firewall, try importing
