Creating a new project in imovie '09

Good afternoon.
When a user creates a new project in iMovie '09 it gets put into the user's Movies folder. This is fine on a stand-alone, but with Network Home Directories it's not, because of the bandwidth needed to transfer files across our network. Is there any way for the user to decide where their new project is to be stored please?

I also successfully created a still frame to a new project I created for this purpose.
Move to a frame in your EVENT, control left-click and select "Add Still frame to project" from the pop-up menue. It will be added at the END of your selected project.
After that, I am still trying to find a way to save that still to iPhoto'09 as a photo.

When you move or copy the compound clips with their events into an external drive all the events should be there. Not clear on why you want to move them into a single event. You can drag and drop from one event to another.
Why are you using compound clips? You can simply copy the project from each machine with used media onto the external drive and that should do it.

  • When I create a new project in iMovie and drop clips into it, it plays the first one and then quits right near the end of the second clip.  I have re-started my computer, tried a new project etc, and no luck, does anyone know how to fix this issue?

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • Cannot create a new project with iMovie. Operation could not be completed. No solution to the problem is available.

Every time I go to create a new project in the latest version of iMovie for mac OS X yosemite, I get the following information. "The operation could not be completed. No further information is available about the problem.
I have tried restarting the computer, that didn't work. I also tried also, to reinstall the app. That didn't work. I even tried updating all the software, and that still didn't work. I am very frustrated and feel the mac was not a good gift, if a major essential app will refuse to work. Nothing I do, seems to work.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take the action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Cannot Create A New Project In imovie

When i want to create a new project in I movie, i cant because it says "Please check the disk to esure there is enough free space and you have permission to write projects" ive got plenty of space so what is the problem??? please help!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi
How much free space is there on Your MAIN Start-Up Hard disk ?
    • I never let this go less than 25Gb - YES Gb
This is due to two things
    • Mac OS X = UNIX
    • The Application used - here iMovie
Both of them creates lot's and lot's of .temp files - You don't see them - but they need hard disk space.
And when this goes scars - all kind of bad behavior appears.

  • Creating a new project in imovie

I have a project that is having a lot of issues playing back in full screen...iMovie 11'...it is running over an hour, I have a suspicion it is the audio (voiceovers and such)...how do I save, finalize, or move half the movie so that i can create 2 halves? I am assuming that in doing so, I can alleviate the size and perhaps create a first and second half...does this sound correct or is there a way to help this in the current project?
    thanks!

You have to update iMovie 9 projects to iMovie 10 from within iMovie 10 before they will appear in iMovie 10 as iMovie 10 uses a completely different project/event file system.  After updating you can still work on projects in iMovie 9 but you won't see any changes made in iMovie 10 and you can't transfer them back.
I would have a good look at the iMovie 10 help files first since a lot is changed and some features have been discontinued that might be important to you.
In order to try out iMovie 10 on just one of your iMovie 9 projects, put the folders just for that project in a separate iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folder and hide the project and event folders containing the projects you don't want to update from iMovie 10 by enclosing them in a higher level folder (only projects and events folders in the Movies folder of the boot drive or at the root level of another drive or partition will be visible to iMovie).
I did it this way and I'm glad I didn't try to update evrything at once!
    Geoff.

  • Unable to create a new project

I am receiving an error when trying to create a new project in iMovie. I have plenty of space on my MacBook. Any ideas?

    Hi RK,
WOW, that tip solved my problems. I am normaly logged in in Windows under the username Bjrn (o with two dots). I created a new user with the name Bjorn and logged in. Now I can start the Java Studio Creator and create new projects with no problems.
Evidently it is not enough to change the project directory to a folder that not contains any multi-byte characters. The Studio have quite a lot of information stored in the folder Documents and Settings\username and that can not be reaced if the username contains non-English characters. I have not run in to this problem with any other system.
Warm thanks to you RK for the help that solved my problems

  • IMovie HD freezes when create a new project

We still use iMovie HD 06 in our schools. It freezes everytime when one studnet tried to create a new project. I deleted com.apple.imovie.plist file, but it didn't help. I tried logon with another user, iMoive HD didn't freeze on creating new project. Saved this project to Shared folder and give everyone Read&Write permission. Login back the first student, tried to open the good project, but it still frozen.
They are all AD users, I checked their own ~/Library/Preferences folder, but didn't find any plist file crushed.
    Any idea? Thanks,

    Hi
My main guess is that there are a troublesome pref file but figuring out
which one will take for eons.
Can also be plug-ins to eg QuickTime.
I would bite the sour Apple (sorry) and make new accounts to all users.
At least they will start working again.

  • Newbie advice needed re: creating new project on iMovie

I have tested the iMovie with some test video. I only used part of it and am impressed and may want to input the rest of it later on. In the meantime I want to create a new project of an old video I did in Alaska. I set up the new project but find that I still have the video clips of my old project in the lower area, where I expect the Alaska clips to go, before dragging into the work area.
How can I get rid of the old clips? Do I just trash them, if I do it says that I will not be able to play the video again! I am confused, can someone please advise me what I should be doing, so That I have a clear area for my new project?

A project only organizes information, it does not store the actual data for that project. The clips for that project are in the events area. If you make a project by dragging event clips into the project window, and then trash the event clips, you will not have a movie anymore.
If once you make a project and need to free up the harddrive space from the events (say you use only a % of the events in your project) you have options. Or you could export your project to various media and eg save the movie as a QuickTime movie, and then trash the video. but once you toss that video you will not have access to it again in iMovie. Or you could save the events on an external HD, but tis has to be done a certain way for iMovie to access it. Sound like this "old video" is on tape? if so you just keep the tape and you dont necesarily need to keep the event files. BUT dont toss them until you have made an actual movie out of your project.

  • IMovie crashed and will not create a new project

I was in the middle of working on a project and when I went to add a clip, it said something along the lines that I couldn't put it there and then closed the program. When I was able to open it back up, I tried working on it but it couldn't find the clips, and later on the actual projects. Now, I am unable to even create a new project.

It is actually on a MacBook not on Windows 7

  • Movie 11 can not copy everything and put it into a new project in imovie 9 it works fine

movie 11 can not copy everything and put it into a new project
in imovie 9 it works fine and there i cant copy 5 different project into new project
but in imovie 11 i only can copy project with option dubler project?

AppleMan  Thanks very much for the information, however I could't make it work. I followed your instructions to the letter, in fact I tried every which-way. I created a dedicated file into which I copied and pasted the project from "package contents"  but it was still greyed out when I went to retrieve it. I also found that the file size was reduced to only a few Kb.  Any further step-by-step instructions would be appreciated as I am obviously doing something wrong.  Babowa  It appears that in imovie everything has to be "finalised" before it can be used or shared elsewhere in the same way as a disk has to be to be played elsewhere. Funnily enough an MOV file I converted to Mp4 was not greyed out and I was able to import it.... an exercise I am not keen on because of resolution loss during conversion

  • Cannot create PAL DV projects in iMovie HD6

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue - or if I've missed something obvious! After having worked with iMovie for several years, always with DV-PAL camcorders, I suddenly find that when I create a new project it defaults to DV-NTSC. In the video format drop down menu of the new project dialog, DV-PAL is no longer available. Thus the only way I can now use the program is to open an existing project, save a copy and delete all the content, which is a tad annoying to say the least.
    Any thoughts appreciated!

Sometimes permissions and preferences can get corrupted. Whenever iMovie starts acting funny, a common maintenance procedure is to do the following: Delete preferences by closing iMovie and trashing the file com.apple.iMovie.plist found in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility App on your Mac. Open the Disk Utilities window and select the Mac hard drive icon at the top of the side pane at the left. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. When you have repaired permissions and deleted preferences, restart your computer and launch iMovie. iMovie will replace the .plist file that you deleted. Be sure also that you have sufficient free disk space on your hard drive for iMovie to function correctly. 25GB often is recommended by users of this forum. After doing all of the above, relaunch iMovie and see whether you still have the problem.

  • Project Library panel blank, unable to create a new project

As it says. Using iMovie 08, my Project Library panel is blank, even if I start the program by double-clicking an existing project in the finder. If I choose to create a new project, it gives me the options (choose aspect ratio, enter name), but no project appears in the Library.
The program has worked in the past. I've tried deleting the iMovie app and re-installing to no avail.

Okay, finally fixed this. After viewing the log in the Console application when opening iMovie, it identified an iMovie data file located on an external HD as being a problem:
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
    /Volumes/Daddy's HD/iMovie Events.localized/PatrickStuff120307/iMovie Data
The parser will retry as in 10.2, but the problem should be corrected in the plist.
I'm not sure exactly what this means, but sending that file to the trash fixed the problem and the Project Library is functioning normally now.

  • I want to break up my hour long video in iMovie 11 into smaller 15 minute segements to upload to youtube. How can i put EDITED VIDEO in new projects in iMovie?

I want to break up my hour long video in iMovie 11 into smaller 15 minute segements to upload to youtube. How can i put EDITED VIDEO in new projects in iMovie? (each 15 minute segment to iMovie)

In iMovie's Project Library view (where all your projects are listed), click on the name of your project (don't double-click to open it, just single click to highlight it).
From the Menu select File > Duplicate Project. A copy of your project will be placed in the Project Library. It will have the same name as the original, but with a number appended. You can rename it if desired - click on its name twice (not double-click) so that it is highlighted as light blue, then over-type it.
Delete from the duplicate all the clips and other media (for example, photos, music and so forth) that you don't want included in the first of your 15 minute segments. In other words, delete all but the first 15 minutes.
Continue creating duplicates of the original (and rename if necessary). Delete from each duplicate all the unrequired parts for each segment. So, for example, for the 2nd duplicate delete the first quarter (15 minutes) and the 3rd and 4th quarters.
You should end up with 4 duplicates with separate names, each containing the required segment. You will also have kept intact the original one hour movie, which you may wish to use independently of YouTube (maybe for burning a DVD or playback through a Media Player).
Note that duplicating the original project will not take up much extra space on your drive. Projects reference (link to) the associated Event (or Events) in the Event Library - they don't actually contain video as such. The project file also keeps track of titles, transitions, effects, music and so forth that you've added to the project.
