Creating a Partition on an new R200?

Hi, I have new portege r200. Came from the factory with XP pro and one partition, taking up the whole of the disk. I'd like to create 2 more partitions on the disk. I don't need to dual boot. Thing is I don't have an external cd writer, though have ext floppy and data key. I've downloaded partition magic 8.0 shareware. Can I create 2 partitions without messing up the OS? If so, how? Is it better to create primary partitions or logical drives?
I did this successfully on my old laptop, which had an internal cd/dvdrom, but used F.Disk. Any advice?

Hi. Thanks for that. I don't think that there is any unpartitioned space on the disk. The primary partion (C: drive) appears to extend over all of it. Though most of the 60 gig is empty of programmes, of course. I'm maybe getting this terribly wrong. It looks like I have to shrink the primary partion, in order to free up some unpartitioned space in the disk, to make room for another partition. Is that correct? If so, can I risk doing that with PMagic without endangering the OS and other programmes in the primary partition? My knoweldge of all this stuff is very rudimentary.
(What I cannot do at the moment is to wipe the disk and start from scratch. I guess I could do that if I purchased and external CD-Rom/RW. The worst that could happen is that I have to buy one and use the rescue disk, I suppose. But i'm hoping to avoid that.)

  • Create index partition in the table partition tablespace

    Hello,
I am running a custom job that
    * Creates a tablespace daily
    * Creates the daily table partition in the tablespace created
    * Drops the tablepartition X days old
    * Drops the tablespace for that partition on X+1 day.
The above job runs perfectly, but 'm having issues with managing the indexes for these partitioned tables. In the old database (10g - Single Node), all the partitions/indexes existed in one BIG tablespace and when I imported the table creation script into the new database, I modified all the table partitions & indexes to go into their respective tablespace.
    Eg:
    Table_name........Partition_name.....................Index_Part_name..........................Tablespace_name
    ============...================............====================...........=================
    TABL1...................TABL1_2012_07_16............TABL1_IDX_2012_07_16............TBS_2012_07_16
    TABL1...................TABL1_2012_07_15............TABL1_IDX_2012_07_15............TBS_2012_07_15
But now when the job runs, it creates the index into the default tablespace TBS_DATA.
    Table_name........Partition_name.....................Index_Part_name..........................Tablespace_name
    ============...================.............====================...........=================
    TABL1...................TABL1_2012_08_16............TABL1_IDX_2012_08_16............TBS_DATA
    TABL1...................TABL1_2012_08_15............TABL1_IDX_2012_08_15............TBS_DATA
I can issue alter index rebuild to move the indexes to its default tablespace, but how can I ensure that the index gets created in its designated tablespace?
NOTE - the partition/tablespace management job that I run only creates the table partition and not the index.
The new env is a 2-Node 11gR2 RAC cluster on Linux x86_64.
    Thanks in advance,
    aBBy.

    Excerpt from the job -
This creates the partition into the new tablespace.
    v_sql_new_part := 'alter table '||tab_owner||'.'||tab_name||' add partition '||v_new_part_nm||'
    values less than (to_date('''||v_new_part_dt_formatted||''',''DD-MON-YYYY'')) tablespace '||part_tbs;
execute immediate v_sql_new_part;New tablespace for new partition - because this is a 10T database and having multiple tablespaces helps with backup/recovery.
    Thanks,
    aBBy.

  • How to create recovery partition in new(changed) HDD.

my new HP pavilion g4 laptop HDD have crased, then I replce it by HP care. I upload original win 7 by recovery disk(DVD) but when I open my computer it shows only one partition (C drive, there is no recovery partition and HP tool.
So how to creates recovery partition by recovery disk(DVD)...........please help me.

    Creating the recovery partition
Right-click the start orb, and start 'Disk Management'.
Shrink the C: drive by let's say 20-30GB.
Then create a new Partition and assign the R: label to it and name it RECOVERY.
Then open command prompt as administrator and type: 'recimg /createimage <directory>',
In this case: 'recimg /createimage R:\' to save it on the new partition.
This step may consume a lot of time.
Now we need to register the newly created recovery image: 'recimg /setcurrent <directory>'
    'recimg /setcurrent R:\'
    Voila you are done.
    Restoring from recovery partition
You may want to use this restoring method by default, because it is the easiest way to do so if your recovery partition is still intact. If not, look at the other recovery methods to see which suits you best. This is usually the way you reset or refresh your Windows installation if you purchase a computer from a brand like Lenovo instead of building one yourself
Press the Windows-key + C to open the charms bar or swipe in from the right.
    Click Settings.
    Click Change PC Settings.
Click Update & Recovery in the menu on the left.
    Click Recovery.
If all your documents are safe and sound in your user folder, you can use Refresh your PC without affecting files. However I still recommend taking a back-up... If you want to do a complete reinstallation of Windows and also clean your user folder in the process then choose Remove everything and reinstall Windows.

Use Parted Magic. But you *should* backup any important files just in case, regardless of method you use. You never know. Someone could unplug your computer, a power surge might happen, etc. A cousin of mine actually did something similar while I was gaming, the extension cord has a red button which he "accidentally" pressed. I would've cracked his skull had he done it while resizing a partition.
Anyway, the partitioning scheme should be the first thing you do when you decide go this route (dual booting). I remember about a year ago I forced myself to use Linux by formatting the entire drive to ext4, except for the 2 GB + 20 GB ntfs partitions. It was what kick-started me on this path. Here's my partitioning scheme for both computers, maybe you'll get an idea and do something similar:
    Older computer:
    2 GB ntfs - MicroXP
8 GB ext4 - Arch Linux + Home dir (to keep the dot files organized in one place)
20 GB ntfs - games partition
Rest is for media, formatted as ext3 with inode 128 (so it can be loaded as Read-Only in Windows too via Ext2fsd so they won't be affected in case of a virus infection)
    New computer:
    20 GB Windows 7
10 GB Arch Linux + home dir
    50 GB games partition
Rest of the space is ext4 mounted to /media
Note that they're all primary partitions for remembering easier (sda1, sda2, sda3, sda4) instead of a combination of primary and extended which would probably look like sda1, sda5, sda6, sda7, etc.

  • What are the 4 partition of a new Elite 8300? Which can I relete? Which impact

    Dear All,
I juts got a new Elite 8300 and I need to have a new partition for data.
I discovered that there already is 4 primary partitions and I can nopt create a new one.
    There are
    - a partition called "system"
    - a large partiton called "os", where is the operating system and data
    - a partition called "recovery"
    - and a unamed partition.
I would like to delete on of them, but I do not the impact of my deletion. My goeal is to have a smaller "os" partition and to have a new partition called "datas"
I supposed I do not have to delete the "system partition", but what happen if I delete "recovery" partition and the unamed partition. I do not care if I do not have a recovery partition. If it crash I can reinstalled the PC and I can use Windows recovery.
Some one can tell me more about the 3 partitons "system, recovery and unamed"?
    Many thankd

You can create logical partitions inside of the current OS partition without affecting the four primary partitions.
The four partition limitation is only for primary partitions. Use the diskpart utility to create a logical partition inside of the largest partition.
Partitions on your PC. (all are primary partitions)
the C: (OS) partition contains the operating system
the D: partition(recovery) contains the recovery partition
the System partition belongs to the Windows OS. (it is wise to leave it alone)
the HP_Tools partition contains  the UEFI environment (PC Hardware Diagnostics)
The following video is in French and English. It does give a good demonstration on how to create primary and logical partitions
    Best regards,
    erico

  • How to create another partition on mac and restore from time machine

I want to create another partition on my macbook running on OS X Yosemite. I want to recover a time machine back up on this partition. Basically this is a backup of my other old PC which I saved on a time machine external hard disk and now I want to create it as a new separate partition which I can log into to as opposed to continuous to connected to it via USB.
Any advise on how I can do that?

    Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the that great tip.
In that time machine back up I have some applications for e.g. MS office etc and I wanted it to be like a virtual machine as such that I launch when I want to use the applications, see my data etc....I have bought parallels as that allows you to have multiple virtual machines on your laptop whether these are multiple mac images as time machine backups or linux, Microsoft Windows 7, 8 etc....
Thats what I eventually want to do here...
This feature that you provided is also of good reference for me in future.

The answer has not changed since your last post here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3230576?tstart=0
There are no XP or Vista drivers for the new Apple computer hardware. Apple stopped XP and Vista support. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4410.

  • Create additional partitions without endangering recovery option

I just purchased a new HP pavilion 500-307nd, it has one 2 TB harddrive. Currently it contains the recovery partition (10GB) the rest is used as the one and only primary partition. I would like to split this one partition (of almost 2TB) into three partitions: one primary containing the system and software, two for storing data only. The recovery partition will remain intact. Would this be a problem? Will I still be able to use the recovery partition if needed?

    Bart, welcome to the forum.
Here is a guide that should help you.  Before you begin you should make a backup of all of your personal data.  If you haven't done so, you should make the System Recovery Disks for the computer, also.  This will allow you to Recover the computer if you have problems while creating the partitions.

  • Creating a Partition has frozen my Disk Utility!!!!!!!

I need immediate help...I was trying to partition a drive into 2 and clicked partition after I had set it up. It's been creating a partition map now for the past 30 minutes or so. The color bar at the bottom has not moved past the 1/4 way mark. What can I do? Somebody please help me????
    Thanks,
    Sean

Where's the HD? Internal, external? FW, USB, or both? What formatting selected. Paucity of information makes troubleshooting difficult.
Quit Disk Utility. Then try DU again. If it hangs, then quit DU, create a new admin user account, log into it, and try again. Report back with details.

  • Can't create Windows partition!

    Hello,
I'm trying to create a new partition to install Windows 7 on, but I am unable to do so.
At first I tried to do this with Boot Camp Assistant, but it didn't work.
Then I tried to create a FAT partition with Disk Utility, which didn't work either.
So I verified and repaired the disk, tried to create the partition again, yet it still didn't work.
I verified and repaired the disk and tried to create the partition while running the OS, in Safe Mode and from the Mac OSX Install DVD.
    Neither of them worked.
I noticed while running the OS, the info of the HD said the capacity is 749.81 GB, while checking that from the Mac OSX Install DVD it only says about 700 GB (I mentioned 698.6 GB).
    Strange..
It might also be important to mention that I recently (2 days ago) I installed a new HD: Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB, and today I swapped my 2x 2GB RAM for 2x 4GB RAM (Samsung).
On my previous HD, the Fujitsu 250GB, this proces was no problem at all. I installed W7 on that drive just a week ago.
I made a clone of the Fujitsu HD and "back-upped" it to my new WD HD. The W7 partition on the Fujitsu HD was 50GB, which is the difference in capacity mentioned above. I'm not sure if there's a link here..
I've got a MacBook Pro from mid 2009.
I'm not sure what to do next... I'm stuck!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Weird thing is I had no trouble making a partition using BootCamp before I restored OS X, and I had the same softwares installed... or maybe I did that before I installed some of them... Could this be related to any software I have installed ?
And judging by your suggestions I would say that the "iDefrag" option is the only way out of the two to make this work. Sounds a little extreme if you ask me... What happens on the first attempt of creating the partition that would make me choose backing up and/or defragmenting ? ... You don't have to answer that if it's too complicated...
Same thing happened on my other MBP... so as far as I'm concerned, I can only restore one more time and try to make the partition right after first startup. If that fails, then it means it could have been software related... Or maybe restore again, install one more software/utility I use and try partitioning again... and again, and again, until it fails...that way I'll know what caused it...
    Just kidding...
Thank you for the suggestions anyway !

    Symptom
This note contains recommendations for improving the load performance of ODS objects in Business Information Warehouse Release 3.0B and 3.1 Content.
    Other terms
Business Information Warehouse, ODS object, BW, RSCUSTA2, RSADMINA
    Solution
To obtain a good load performance for ODS objects, we recommend that you note the following:
    1. Activating data in the ODS object
In the Implementation Guide in the BW Customizing, you can implement different settings under Business Information Warehouse -> General BW settings -> Settings for the ODS object that will improve performance when you activate data in the ODS object.
    1. Creating SIDs
The creation of SIDs is time-consuming and may be avoided in the following cases:
    a) You should not set the indicator for BEx Reporting if you are only using the ODS object as a data store.Otherwise, SIDs are created for all new characteristic values by setting this indicator.
    b) If you are using line items (for example, document number, time stamp and so on) as characteristics in the ODS object, you should mark these as 'Attribute only' in the characteristics maintenance.
SIDs are created at the same time if parallel activation is activated (see above). They are then created using the same number of parallel processes as those set for the activation. However:if you specify a server group or a special server in the Customizing, these specifications only apply to activation and not the creation of SIDs.The creation of SIDs runs on the application server on which the batch job is also running.
    1. DB partitioning on the table for active data (technical name:
The process of deleting data from the ODS object may be accelerated by partitioning on the database level.Select the characteristic after which you want deletion to occur as a partitioning criterion. For more details on partitioning database tables, see the database documentation (DBMS CD).Partitioning is supported with the following databases:Oracle, DB2/390, Informix.
    1. Indexing
Selection criteria should be used for queries on ODS objects. The existing primary index is used if the key fields are specified. As a result, the characteristic that is accessed more frequently should be left justified. If the key fields are only partially specified in the selection criteria (recognizable in the SQL trace), the query runtime may be optimized by creating additional indexes. You can create these secondary indexes in the ODS object maintenance.
    1. Loading unique data records
If you only load unique data records (that is, data records with a one-time key combination) into the ODS object, the load performance will improve if you set the 'Unique data record' indicator in the ODS object maintenance.
    Hope this helps..
