Creating a PDF with transparency without exporting to PDF (Mac)

Hi
I need to created a PDF from InDesign that has unflattened (native) transparency without using the export PDF command ( because of the flaw seen here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/537751?tstart=0 )
I have tried exporting as an EPS and that flattens transparency and creating PS does as well.
Any other ideas, settings or applications/utilities to try?
Thanks
-Andrew

Thanks everyone that was what I thought.
Peter: If we knew when it was happening then we can fix it, unfortunately there is no indicator when it will happen. We get jobs from all over North America from all kinds of designers so it could happen on any job.
It is hard to say how many job it happens on as in most cases it wouldn't be noticed by the client as the amount is so small, and in some case it would happen in the bleed that gets trimmed.
So far we have noticed the issue when it happens in a critical situation and haven't had any spoils but it is just a matter of time.
We are going into Annual Reports soon as well as proffesional sport tickets both of which are critical clients.

  • Creating a PDF with Transparent Images

    Hi,
    Here is my problem:
I am using Acrobat 9. I design posters in another program. I print to PDF.
I design the poster and must put a logo in it with a transparent background. Note: If the poster background is white I never have any problems.
This poster has a pink background and hence I have to put the logo into the poster in a graphic type of gif or tiff or png to maintain transparency.
All is fine in my design program - transparency is fine etc.
I print to PDF (Acrobat 9.0) and the dreaded white box occurs. Note, I put an old version of the logo, one I cannot use, and it maintained its transparency fine. So this means that some gif files Acrobat 9.0 keeps transparency and some it does not.
So, in summary, I have tried all types of file formats gif, png, tiff and all types of programs to remove the logo background and save as one of the later formats and NONE maintain the transparency in the PDF output.
I have even tried saving the whole poster as a jpeg - but the quality was too poor to print.
I have used Word, Photoshop, MS Photodraw, Elements etc.
I have no idea why a gif I have from years ago works and one that I am creating now maintain their tranparency in the PDF.
I am under a deadline and am VERY worried this will not get done.
I am immensely grateful for any help - I have been at this for countless weeks and hours...
    Thanks,
    Elisabeth

I am using MS Publisher and even Word 2010 for poster design and have used multiple programs (and multiple formats that support transparency)  for logo editing - removal of background - Photoshop, etc.
I place logos, both gifs, with transparent backgrounds in a document and print PDF and one or none will show transparency - it makes no sense at all.
Most of the time the background is a white block. It couldnt be more frustrating.
It is a simple document/poster with just a few words of text and a logo...
Are there settings in Acrobat 9.0 that need to be turned on that I am missing. I had no trouble with Acrobat 7 - it worked EVERY time.
I was on  with tech support for 5 hrs and there was no knowledge of this - he just wanted to reinstall 7.0 which did not work.
Need ideas - overprinting is on. I noticed that flattening doesnt allow me to pick transparent objects - have no ideas if I am even on the right track.
Have read everything I can find online regarding Acrobat 9.0, PDF creation and transparent logo backgrounds.
    Sooo grateful for any help!
    Thanks,
    Elisabeth

  • How to create image slice with transparent background without white halo around?

Hi, I want to make slice image with transparent background. I set the slice option background color to my background color. But when the image is on my html page set against the same background color, it has white halo around:
How can I get rid of the white halo?
I need the slice image to have transparent background and not have a color background because it's going on a rollover button with the background change. I don't want it to look like this on rollover:

    >it looks to me like you built it with that "halo" to start with.
No, I didn't put in the halo myself. The shape is a character from the Webdings font. It's set to some darker fill color and set on a transparent background. Photoshop put the white halo there after "Save For Web".
    > Make your graphic on a transparent background and Save for Web
    I did exactly that, see:
I set the slice background to my color. I try the Matte option and come out the same with white halo.
It seems I'm not making Photoshop antialias to my background color, instead Photoshop just antialias to white.
What else do I need to do?

  • Flattening PDF with transparency becomes large PDF

    Hi,
I have an issue with a PDF file created from Photoshop. The PDF file contains transparency settings.
When I create the PDF from Photoshop with a setting that flattens transparency (such as PDFX1a2001), the resulting PDF is flat and fairly small in size.
If I create the PDF from Photoshop with a setting that preserves transparency (such as High Quality Print), the file is also small in size. However, if I use this same PDF and flatten it, by printing it once more as a PDF with a setting such as PDFX1a2001 (PDF to PDF), the file becomes enormous. And Acrobat even rasterises embedded fonts which I don't understand!
I believe the problem has nothing to do with Photoshop, but Acrobat is the culprit (the same thing happened with Illustrator instead of Photoshop).
Has anybody come across a similar issue, and/or what do you suggest I try as a workaround?
    Thanks.
PS: My initial goal was to use the PDF with the transparency as a watermark into a second PDF and then flatten the resulting PDF into a new PDF. This last, flat, PDF becomes very large in size and even has fonts rasterised.
But the problem can be isolated to the operation of flattening the PDF containing transparency, as described above.
    Update:
The problem described occurred with Acrobat Distiller 9.0.0.
I tried using Acrobat Distiller 8.1.0, and that worked! The watermark with transparency got embedded in the pdf, and the resulting pdf had a standard file size. I do see a very thin border around the watermark however which appears and disappears depending on the zoom.
1- Any solution on how to fix this problem for Acrobat Distiller 9.0.0?
2- Is the thin border appearing around the watermark (with Distiller 8) an artifact or will it be seen on print?

hi, I've just come across this looking for an answer to a related issue. You may have already found your answers, 1 year later, but in case you're still curious:
the small hairlines around the flattened watermark are what Adobe calls "atomic regions." For transparent type, or any vector shape with a transparency effect (e.g. drop shadow) to be flattened into the artwork behind it, it needs to be rastered into a bitmap to burn it into a single object. The atomic regions are small slices of image where that vector-bitmap rastering happened. In virtually all cases you will not see that in print. (If you zoom in and it gets larger, then you may. It typically stays the same size or disappears.)
There's a host of settings in both versions of Acrobat (more in 9) wherein you can determine how much "extra" information gets carried into your file. Even after flattening within Acrobat, you can still optimize the file size by tossing all of that extra info. (go to Help menu and enter Reduce File Size)
What I suspect is happening is, when outputting a flattened X-1a from Photoshop, it's taking care of rastering the watermark into the image, creating a flattened file. (this is assuming you're not applying the watermark in Acrobat.) This is a single bitmap image.
If you're flattening say, an X-4 (unflattened) PDF with live transparency, or burning in an Acrobat watermark, Acrobat is creating more than a couple atomic regions (likely very many). These are several bitmap images, probably along with some other vector type—even if the glyphs stay vector (no transparency affecting them) they are no longer type, but vector objects, if any other part of the copy was rasterized. Acrobat may even be doing you the favor of keeping the text it converted in an invisible layer above the image. (It does this with OCR conversions.)
Text is text, with font attributes applied, and takes up very little room in a document. Text partially converted to bitmaps and vectors can no longer be read in the file as text (exporting, assistive devices, etc.). If, as I suspect, Acrobat is rastering some of the type, it's preserving the text in the file so it can still be read and exported. (This is just a hypothesis on my part.)
All of the various little images in the atomic regions, partially rastered type, plus any overhead garbage Acrobat saw fit to add to your file can increase the file size drastically.
My advice? Either create a PDF and leave the Acrobat watermark alone (there are reasons), or if you have to flatten it—because you're submitting a PDF/X-1a-compliant file for press that needs to have a transparent watermark—flatten the image in Photoshop, then export your PDF.

  • Problems with the report export in PDF format

    Hi All,
I am new to this forum.
I'm developing a web application that uses Java Reporting Component (JRC) to display crystal reports.
    I have three problem:
    1) I want, after entering the filters in a jsp, to print a report in PDF format (WORD) without opening it
with Adobe Reader (Microsoft Word). The class of API JRC used for export is ReportExportControl.
    2) I want to print multiple reports one after the other to reduce the time (possibly joining two or more reports into a single PDF)
    3) I want to insert, in the jsp page filters, the number of pages to print from the same report (without
opening it with Adobe Reader (Microsoft Word))
Can anyone help me? or can give a simple java code to do the same.
    Thanks in advance.

  • CR report with embedded SWF: Export to PDF displays nothing

I'm creating CR 2008 reports with embedded SWFs as described in the whitepaper [EMBEDDING XCELSIUS 2008 VISUALIZATIONS IN CRYSTAL REPORTS 2008|http://www.businessobjects.com/pdf/product/catalog/crystalreports/cr_xc_integration.pdf].
From CR, I can export the report to html and view the report fine. But when I export to pdf, ppt, etc. The SWFs are not viewable. Is this a bug or by design?
This section of the white paper seems to imply that maybe you cannot export to pdf:
    >TECHNICAL DETAILS
    >
    >Viewing Flash objects embedded in a Crystal Report is supported in the:
    >
    >Crystal Reports 2008 Preview tab
    >Crystal Reports 2008 .NET Webform viewer
    >Crystal Reports 2008 Java DHTML viewer (used in BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.0 and other products)
    >
    >Exporting and printing of Flash objects with connections to Crystal Reports data is not supported.
    >
    >Embedded Flash objects that do not have connections to Crystal Reports data can be exported to PDF only.
I'm using the latest version of Adobe products:
    - Adobe Flash Player ActiveX, Version 9.0.124.0
    - Adobe Flash Player Plugin, Version 9.0.115.0
    - Adobe Reader 9, Version 9.0.0
Also, I downloaded [CR Viewer 2008|http://www.businessobjects.com/product/catalog/crystalreports_viewer/] and can see the CR reports I've created with embedded Xcelsius swfs.
    Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
    Tim

    > ... it states in your first post, the export is not supported,
    True. It says:
    > Exporting and printing of Flash objects with connections to Crystal Reports data is not supported.
But I can export such reports to html and view and print the flash objects.
It seems inconsistent to me. I can export static flash charts to pdf, yet I cannot export dynamic flash charts to pdf, which is from Adobe, as is Flash?
I'm hoping this is a temporary bug either in Crystal or pdf reader and is to be fixed in a patch release. Or an explanation of why the limitations exist.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Report with Summary & Detail - Exporting to PDF in Crystal Report

    Hi,
I am using Crystal Reports XI (release 2). I am trying out a report with Summary and Detail sections.
    Requirement:
    1.     Report should display both Summary and Detail Sections
    2.     Summary section should be displayed first followed by Detail Section
    3.     A field in summary section should have a hyperlink to Detail Section
    4.     On clicking the hyperlink the user should be navigated to the corresponding detail record
    5.     User should be able to download the whole report as a single PDF (i.e., both summary and detail together)
    Implementation in Crystal Report:
This feature could be implemented using
    a.     Linked On Demand Sub report
    b.     Using Hide (Drill down ok) option
    c.     Hyperlinks
    Issue Faced:
I used the on demand sub report option. When i clicked on the sub report (hyperlink), the details get displayed. But the details get displayed in separate viewer and hence when we export to PDF both summary and detail are not getting exported together. User has to select each detail report and export to PDF. Is this a limitation in CR XI? - proprietary Crystal Report features, such as drill-down and on-demand subreports, are supported only in the native Crystal Report format. These special features are ignored when exporting a report to a non-Crystal format like pdf.
Is there any workaround for exporting both the summary and detail (in subreport) as a single PDF file?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Viji.

    Hi
Hyperlink would not be a solution to what you are asking for.
If you want to see the records related to a particular employee id by clicking on emp id, you can try the below:
    - Apply a group on employee id on the main report.
    - Insert a subreport with the required fields and place it on the Employee id Group header. You can put a name of the subreport as "Check Employee details" or something else as per requirement and make it a on demand subreport.
    - Link the subreport on Employee id.
    Hope this helps!!!

  • Problems with bleed and exporting to PDF.

    Hi,
I am having a slight problem exporting a file to pdf in Indesign CS3.
I have my documents set up with a 3mm bleed and I have made sure that the images and work extend passed the bleed marks as they should. The problem is that when I export to pdf, the pdf file appears to have cropped the work exactly on the bleed line leaving nothing extending passed the bleed. The 3mm bleed area is still there but nothing is extending into it which is kind of pointless. I don't know whether there is a setting I am missing or something like that but any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

"It appears to crop it exactly on the bleed line."
for the record, isn't that what it's supposed to do?
Your bleed line is 3mm outside the trim. Anything you bleed will be contained in that 3mm band. If you hang any more than 3mm off the edge, only the 3mm in the bleed band will show on the PDF.

  • Pdf with transparent background

I put a logo inside a PDF. The PDF has a transparent background. When I import the PDF into FCPX, the PDF's background is opaque white. When I import the same PDF into Motion 5, the PDF's background is transparent. I want  transparent backgrounds in FCP. How do I do it? Does FCPX support transparent PDF files?
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply Luis. True, png is an option. I prefer a vector based PDF file in this paticular case, because I want the ability to increase the PDF's scale in FCP and maintain fine detail. Unfortunately, raster based PNG files don't have the same flexibility.
    True.
But since with pdf you don't get the support for transparency,
    there is as middle-of-the-road solution.
You can rasterize and choose a big-enough resolution for your purposes.
In Preview, if you save as png, you can choose a resolution of, say, 300 dpi, or 3000 dpi.
Of course, the larger the resolution the larger a file you get. This is not as elegant a solution as a vector graphics, but it works and lets work with transparency. Call it a workaround if you will.
I suggest you keep the original pdf and try with a few different resolutions in png to find the sweet spot between file size and zoomability. Keep in mind that very large files may also diminish performance somewhat.

  • Issue with Crystal Report export to PDF

Have a report in Crystal Report 2008. The report runs fine, but would like to export it to PDF/EXCEL, but nothing happens when I select the Export type(i.e. PDF,Excel, etc).
    Steps to replicate:
    1. Run Crystal Report
    2. Click on EXPORT button.
    3. Select the Export type (PDF).
    4. Click on EXPORT - Nothing happens nor does it return any error.
Would someone be able to provide some tips on this issue

The problem is that the 3rd party is using some CR SDK. We don't even know what SDK that is. They should be coming here and asking us to help them on your behalf. It is almost impossible for us to help, not knowing how they implemented the SDK, which SDk, etc..

  • Is there a way to export 2 different pdf's in one export command? Mac IND CS3

Hi. I was just wondering if there is a way, via script or some other way to export my layouts done in Adobe InDesign CS3 (Mac) into two different kinds of pdf's - one in low-resolution pdf, and onother in press ready high resolution pdf -- both done in one command? What I am doing now is export first as low res, then export again using high-res settings. I haven't got time to study scripting yet, so if there is a script available, or a shortcut command, that would save me valuable time everyday. Thanks!

There's no way to do this automatically in Indesign.
What I do is export the file as a high res PDF. It opens automatically in Acrobat. Then I choose "Advanced:PDF Optimizer," where I've set up a profile that creates a low-res version, and I save that with a different name. That gives considerable control, but probably is as much work as what you do, although it might be slightly faster.

For example I use Google Drive for Documents and to print them you need to use a PDF, I try to open the PDF but it just makes me download it. Is their anyway for this to get working?

You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable the build-in PDF viewer.
You can check the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref on the about:config page and remove the application/pdf part if present or reset the pref to the default via the right-click context menu.
