Creating a shape outline without stroke

I'm creating navigational elements in photoshop and I want to be able to adjust the outline by itself, as well as there are some elements that are only an outline with no fill. How do I create shape outlines without the fill?
Adobe Photoshop CS4, PC.

they changed this a few times, on one version there was a stroke style option to do it.
the earlier versions there was a long winded way of
1. Draw your rounded rect etc with the tool
2. Ctrl-select that layer to select the shape
3. Create a new layer
4. Edit -> Stroke... to create the outline
5. Delete the original shape
another was was Select->Modify->Border
don't forget there is a stroke from the drop down menus not just in effects, this is what you need when you want a stroke on a stroke on a stroke etc

    Sure.
Roughen effect. This is interesting for some "vintage" look of lines.

  • Creating Rounded Rectangle Outline Colour Issue

    Hi all,
I am wanting to create a rounded rectangle, with an outline or boarder with a colour black (Or other colours). But i am unable to find where i'm able to add an outline colour as an option before drawing out the shape or after drawing the shape.
The only option i am able to do is changing the background colour of the shape created, and i was wondering if you are able to add an outline when creating or after creating a rounded rectangles or other shapes...
    Thanks,
    James

  • Shape outlines change size when skewed. Is this normal?

Good Morning InDeisgn Experts and Gurus,
I created a shape in InDesign CS5, and applied and outline to it of 4px.  However, when I skewed the shape, the size of the outline changed on the sides.
Is this normal? How would I remedy this, besides creating another but slughtly larger shape?  See attached image.
    Thanks.

I never noticed this before, but it seems the shear tool applies a live transformation at the original object -- you can see the shear angle in the control panel, and change it to something else, or even set it back to 0 to get its previous shape. Apparently, its outline is sheared along with it.
I know of only one way to force the transformation to "reset" to nothing: draw a very small rectangle right on top of your red object. Give it the same fill-and-stroke as the red object (use the Eyedropper tool for this). Select both, and then select Add in the Pathfinder panel. You will see that (1) the shear value in the control panel disappears, and is reset to 0°; and (2), the outline will behave normally.

  • Draw figure without stroke?

I want to draw a shape (rectangle) without any stroke. I tried creating a BasicStroke with zero width, but this did not work. The reason was confirmed in this passage from the docs:
"If width is set to 0.0f, the stroke is rendered as the thinnest possible line for the target device and the antialias hint setting."
So a line is still drawn on my screen.
For now I will just draw the stroke in the same color as the fill so it will not show, but would like to have a better solution.
    Thanks,
    Steve C.

    Try this....
        graphics.setColor(Color.red);
graphics.fill(rectangle);Thats all I do... use the graphics.draw(rectangle) if you want the stroke

  • LACK OF FULL PEN TOOL FUNCTIONALITY WHEN CREATING A SHAPE LAYER

Hello, I'm going through Chris Meyer's video course on being an AE apprentice and have spent over an hour on the following issue.
    Here is what I know.
I know I am trying to create a shape layer, not a mask, to create a frame to surround the video of the green field on the attached screenshot.  Therefore, I pressed "F2" to make sure I am doing so.
I want to define the borders of this picture frame by using the pen tool to draw a path on the layer entitled "Windy Peak".
I have highlighted that layer in my timeline.
This video was pasted on to a placeholder shape that I had created using Command Option "/" on my Mac.
I do have limited use of the pen tool, because it displays properly when I hover it above the borders of the video to be framed.
But I lack access to the toolbar controls I want to complete my assignment.
For example, I would like to create a gradient to define the internal coloration of this frame, but I have no use of the eyedropper when I click on the Color Picker.
Also, I am unable to access or manipulate any of the standard fill or stroke options for use of my pen.
    This is what I know.
    Thanks for your help!   Matt
Message was edited by: Matt Dubuque to add the fact that the video had been pasted on to a placeholder shape image by pressing Command Option "/" on my Mac.

Thanks for pitching in Todd and Rick, I appreciate it very much.
As previously stated, I do have use of the pen tool, but it only has limited functionality as demonstrated by the path I created on the green meadow.  My Tools Panel remains activated .
My core problem remains that I am unable to adjust the fill or stroke settings for my pen.
I have tried changing and resetting various work spaces and this has not helped.
    I'm scratching my head here.

  • Hiding the fill while creating a shape (help needed)

    Hi,
I'm crossing over to Illustrator after using freehand for many years to create my vector art. I'm struggling with illustrator though because I tend to create lines by making a shape. example here http://www.dot2.uk.com/sugar.html So I need to be able to make these shapes while being able to hide the fill. Hope that makes sense. Can you help (What I mean is... When you create a shape using paths, it tends to fill the area as you create it! I don't want that, I simply need to see the path I'm creating and for it to fill once it's completed.)

There is no real way of doing this except to turn off the fill in some way or crearte the object without a fill and the fill it.
The way to turn off the fill is without any thing selected go to the appearance panel uncheck from the flyout New Art Has Basic Appearance?
Then in the appearance panel click on the default fill"s eye icon to make it invisible.
Now start drawing. if you turn the fill back on the new art will have a fill unless you turn it off again but if you do not tun it on again you can just continue to draw without the fill.
You can select different fill colors for each object and it will not be visible this way and when you turn on the fills for each object the roper color will fill the object.
Still I like the method you describe and it would be better to have an option to work this way .
Ooops all this and of course I did not think of command y.
The above is only good if you need to see the previously drawn art as is.

  • Pentool in CS5 is not creating a shape

    Hi,
Does anyone know why when using the pen tool it doesnt convert to a shape. I'm using CS5 which i've only recently installed so I'm assuming something has changed in the way the tool is used? But I can't figure it out. I'm creating the shape all on a new layer (although when i later delete the layer the outline of the shape remains but with no fill, or i can't move it)
    Any ideas would be great!
    Cheers

Are you using the correct choice in the Options Bar?

  • Outline a stroke......?

hello, thanks for advise in advance, my problem today is i needed to stroke some text to thicken up for vinyl work. so then i select all, create outlines, then object-path-outline stroke........ but when i looked closer i got two outlines the one from original border and one from the stroke that i outlined. so then i tried to direct select paths i did not need seem to work but went i sent work to cutter still got both outlines. any advise would be great thanks again. -nick

All you had to do is Create Outlines there was no need to also outline the stroke.
So what you might have now is actually a compound path
    Something like this
you would want to first determine if you want the outer or inner path to use for the cutline.
And you can delete the say the interior path, the fill will become probably black which you can change as well
What you probably had before was actually three paths the original path left because you had a fill as well as a stroke
    like this

  • Pathfinder Tool - Minus Front (Front shape outline not included)

I'm having some difficulty applying the Minus Front option of the Pathfinder tool with a front shape that contains an outline with rounded points.
Question: Is there a way to preserve the rounded outline + front shape as part of the final shape when applying the Minus Front Pathfinder option?
    To recreate:
    1. Create background shape (Orange box)
    2. Add front shape with outline containing rounded points (Star shape)
    3. Select background and front shape and apply the Minus Front Pathfinder tool option.
    4. Rounded outline from front shape not transferred to final shape after pathfinder action is applied.

You might find this thread helpful:
    outlining text
The Pathfinder functions don't take into account "appearances" applied to the underlying object, so you would have to convert the object to a single outermost path. Usually this can be done with one or two invocations of Object > Expand.

  • Creating new shapes

What is the best way to create new shapes for motion. Should I make them in Illustrator or is their a place that I can download them?
    Thank you
    Vincent LeGrow

Yes, I guess I do what to make them in Moion. But I
was also wondering if I could download more online,
If you choose to import Illustrator files, you can find A LOT of them to download. Some are for free, like on Adobe's Exchange community. you can also buy them as royalty-free artwork on websites like istockphoto.com
because the library of shapes provided is very
    limited.
Not only the library is limited, but also Motions shape editing tools are limited compared to Illustrator.
If you feel comfortable with importing Illustrator files, you may also check out Ampede's Layerlink plugin, which allows you import separate layers from the file, just like from Photoshop files. Without this plugin Motion can only import the flattened PDF layer.
There's also a free script for Illustrator written by Specialcase:
    http://www.motionsmarts.com/downloads.html
It exports the curently selected path to Motion as a shape object.
    Hope this helps.

  • Creating vector based outlines of text

There's a really great effect I'm trying to achieve where you take a shape and morph it into another shape, or often text.
There is a simple command in AE, like illustrator, where you simply "create outlines." AE also does a great job of taking one shape and morphing it into another just by keyframing the bezier points in shape one and then shape 2. It interpolates perfectly.
I've got pretty big challenges making this happen with Motion. Anyone know what I'm talking about and is there a way to do this I'm missing?
In other words, I want to be able to firstly turn text into vector points.
Secondly, I want to be able to copy points within a layer. Example, take 10 points from layer 2 and copy them into a pre-existing layer 1 rather than draw then having to take the preexisting layer 1 points and move them into the same shape as layer 2.
Can I copy control points like this?

    No....and....uh....no.
I'm afraid this is an area where Motion is far behind AE. Currently there is no way to create vector shapes with control points from text in Motion. There is also no built-in way to morph one vector shape into another although perhaps someone has developed a plug-in to do that.
There are a couple of tricks that you can do to fake it a bit, or certainly the manual way of morphing one vector shape into another, but nothing automated that I'm aware of.

  • I have an iPad and and iPhone. They share an iCloud and I want separate iCloud accounts. How do I create a new account without losing any information? I want to keep the original account on one device.

I have an iPad and an iPhone that share an iCloud account. I didn't realize when I got my iPad last year that when I signed up the iCloud on the device that it would share and use 5g of iCloud between the both of them. How do I unsync them and have two separate iCloud accounts? I don't care about sharing between them. When my kids put games on my iPad, I don't want them going on my phone. How do I create a new iCloud without losing any info on the other device?

  • CREATE XML PUBLISHER REPORT WITHOUT USING RDF

    Hi Every one ,
Can anybody share his/her expertise on following issue ?
"How to create XML Publisher Report without using RDF?"
    Your help is appreciated.

    Hi Swapnesh
YOu do not need to create the XDODTEXE, its seeded for you. You need to do the following:
    1. Create and test the data template
    2. Load the data template to the template manager against a data definition
    3. Create a concurrent program definition that uses the XDODTEXE as its executable
    4. Create parameters (if required) for the CP and DT that match in name
    You're done
    Regards
