Creating a Shortcut on a Mac Desktop

Hi everyone. I'm sure this has a very simple answer, but me being a newbie to using a
Mac computer, I need some help.  I've set up a server for my home network with a
Static IP of 192.168.2.10 .
It was simple to create shortcuts for my computer and my sister's, because I've used
Microsoft since it was DOS, and my sister's is Windows XP.  I simply created a shortcut
and then typed in the network address, it being "\\192.168.2.10\Music" in Windows.
But my mom has a Mac, and I need to create an alias (I think it's called) that would lead
to the server from it.  I've searched all through the internet, and all I can find is something
to the effect of this:
1. Launch your Finder and look for the program that you want to create the alias for.
2. Highlight this file and select "Make Alias".
3. Drag the Alias to the desktop.
My problem is that there is not an icon displayed that links to the server.
Is there some kind of Properties box where I can manually enter the network path?

Hi,
First off, putting stuff (links/aliases, files, folders) on a Mac Desktop is not good practice, because it leads to some extra work on the CPU, since the Desktop is a folder like others, OS X will index all its content every time your Mom starts her Mac.
This said, the best way to make an alias easy to use is to place it in the Dock via drag-n-drop, not on the Desktop. If placed in the Dock, your alias will always be within reach. All you have to do is locate the server folder you want to share in the Finder, and drag it to rightmost part of the Dock, where there are already some folders such as Applications, Documents, Downloads, etc...
Alternately, you can also create a new Shared item in the left pane of your main Finder window. In the Finder preferences, you can also choose to show all connected servers on the Desktop, which can come in handy too.
You may have to restart the Finder (or reboot the Mac, or just log out and back in) for the latter to take effect.
Oh, I almost forgot: you can also copy and paste the folder in question in the Desktop folder (left pane in the Finder main window), and it'll appear on the Desktop itself.

  • Creating browser shortcuts on the playbook desktop

    Is it possible to create a browser shortcut to a web page on the playbook desktop (in the All, Favorites section etc).  From the browser on my BB Torch, I can click the menu button, and select   "Add to home screen", but I don't see this functionality on the playbook.
    I also noticed that when creating a bookmark in the browser on the playbook, I can't see to find how you can rename the bookmark before saving it.  Just an example,  if you go to http://www.cnet.com and save the bookmark, the bookmark shows up on the bookmark screen with the text "Product reviews amd p.."   This is not very helpful, RIM please fix this.

    I probably should have phrased it differently.  On my Blackberry Torch, I can go to a web page in the the browser, click on the menu button, then select "Add to home screen" which puts an icon on my home screen which points directly to the website.    I could save the page as a bookmark on my phone instead of creating an icon on my home screen, but I find it a lot easier just to click on the icon on my home screen which takes me to the page.
    Instead of having to search through a lot of bookmarks in the browser, it would be a lot easier if RIM added the above functionality  to the playbook, similar to the way it is on the BB Torch and other Blackberries.

  • How do I create a shortcut of the Macintosh HD onto my desktop

    I have been trying to create a shortcut/ dragging icon onto desktop of the internal hardrive so it permantely on my desktop.  ...it keeps telling me that the folder "Macintosh HD" can't be moved into one of its subfolders???  But my last mac I could....I have nothing on my desktop so cannot understand why..help please!!!

    Go to Finder - Preferences - General and check the boxes of everything you want to be shown on your Desktop.
    The Desktop itself is a Folder that is on the 'Macintosh HD' and therefor you cannot drag the Macintosh HD icon onto the desktop.

  • Creating a shortcut of an application on the desktop

    Hi,
    I've just purchased an ibook G4 running on Mac OS X (10.4.8) from apple and wanted to know how can I create application shortcuts on my desktop? Since I'm familar with Windows and Unix, I'm finding a mac a bit of a mission!
    Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to discussions apple freak,
    You can do what Gnarlodious suggested, and it will work perfectly fine, But you should try out the dock. At default it is located at bottom of the screen (though it can be moved to either side), you can put applications there, folders, and basically anything that it will let you drag onto it. You do not need to create a short cut, or alias (basically the same thing). To place something on your dock simply drag it's icon, and let it drop on the dock. You can also set the dock to hide when your mouse is not over it, and to magnify when you mouse is over it. This is also where documents that are minimized are stored until you open them again. You may already know all (or some) of this, but if you haven't yet tried working with the dock I suggest you try it.

  • When I create a shortcut to a web page from FireFox to the desktop, how can I force Firefox to open from it when I.E. is default and has to stay that way?

    I have a customer that likes to use Firefox browser and does for all they can. Unfortunately they have to also us I.E. with some of their business companies so their browser is set to I.E. by default and must stay that way. Tried changing default for brevity we will just say opened to many other problems. SO, is there a way to create a short cut to the desktop from Firefox and force that shortcut to open with Firefox and not with the default browser IE?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hello,
    You can create a new Firefox shortcut on the desktop and add the website address after Firefox. For example:
    Under the shortcut tab, the target could read:
    * "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" "www.google.ca"

    LR 5.6 on Mac desktop all of a sudden will not read any card from any reader but will work on my laptop. I can work on previous images but not import new ones. Even if I create a catalog on laptop and import to my desktop on a thumb drive, the images are only accessible as long as the thumb drive is inserted.

    Sounds like you may need to repair the Disk Permissions on your drive where your images are stored.

    Hey, Dynamite !
    Thanks so much for that ... what a 'dynamite' solution. It's so easy. I don't know how you people know all of these things ! But one last thing if you can help me - I've just switched over to Mozilla/Firefox from I.E., and now I cannot open my Hotmail from Mozilla/Firefox. I log in, it goes to my 'Inbox' page, but when I click on an Email letter to open it, nothing happens. I can't even go into 'Drafts' or 'Delete' or anything.

    Make absolutely certain that FireFox is designated as your default browser.
    Do this: Tools / Options / Advanced / Check Now / correct the setting
    OR right click on any shortcut icon / Open With / Choose Default Program / select desired Browser / check Always... box / OK

  • Creating a Custom Event Log View Shortcut on a server desktop for an admin

    Good morning,
    We have a new admin starting and I would like to create custom event log view shortcut on there desktop for each server they need to check. Is there a way to do this in Server 2012 and Server 2008?
     I have figured out how to create a shortcut of the Application and System log, but not Custom Views. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Based on my research, you can create a custom view like
    this.However, I tried miltiple ways to create a shortcut of the custom view of the event viewer and no result. I can only create a shortcut of the event viewer. You may need a script can achieve that.
    Best regards,

  • Hard to create shortcuts in Users\Public\Desktop

    Hi all,
    I can't find this documented anywhere...
    When I browse to %SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Desktop in Windows Explorer, the right-click "Paste shortcut" command generates the following error message:
    Windows can't create a shortcut here.
    Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?
    In addition, the "Create shortcut" menu item is missing when I right-click -> New.
    To put shortcuts in that folder like I want, I have to create the shortcuts elsewhere and copy them over, or create the shortcuts programmatically (e.g., WshShell.CreateShortcut).
    Can anyone provide any details on this behavior?
    Thanks!
    Bill

    Hi Ronnie,
    Thanks for the reply, but I think you're misunderstanding...
    It's not a permissions problem -- I'm running an elevated Explorer window. As I said, I can copy shortcut files there (and copy and delete any other files there as well). Also, note that the following script works as well:
    var fso = new ActiveXObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject");
    var wshShell = new ActiveXObject("WScript.shell");
    var allUsersDesktop = wshShell.SpecialFolders.Item("AllUsersDesktop");
    var shortcutName = "Command Prompt.lnk";
    var shortcutPath = fso.BuildPath(allUsersDesktop, shortcutName);
    var wshShortcut = wshShell.CreateShortcut(shortcutPath);
    wshShortcut.TargetPath = fso.BuildPath(fso.GetSpecialFolder(1), "cmd.exe");
    wshShortcut.Save();
    The above script (save it in notepad and name 'createCmdShortcut.js') programmatically creates the shortcut without problems (of course, you have to run it from an elevated command prompt window), so as I said, it's not a permissions problem -- if it were a permissions problem, the above script would fail (and it does, if you don't run it elevated).
    The problem I'm highlighting is that the "Create shortcut" menu item doesn't work (it generates the "Windows can't create a shortcut here" message), and the right-click -> New -> Shortcut menu item is missing when you target your Windows Explorer window on the Users\Public\Desktop folder. These things work fine when I change my Explorer view to some other folder. I can't find any documented reason for this behavior.
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Wont create a shortcut on desktop.

    After running my app the second time, it does NOT ask me if I want to create a shortcut, but I want it to. How do I make it do this? I tried adding <offline-allowed/> to the information block, but to no avail.
    please help.

    I'm Windows with 1.4.0_01 (Webstart 1.0.1)
    I left a Webstart icon on the desktop, and clicking on that gets me the Manager. The program is C:\Program Files\Java Web Start\javaws.exe that starts. You might find it and start it directly and see what you get.
    I'm guessing that you're starting an application, not the manager.
