Creating a title over video

hello all,
I'm a new user to final cut express hd, and I'm just curious, how does one add a title over a video file, as well as just a title in general

The help menu could get you started here with detailed instructions. Go to the Generators button, the little A in the lower right of the viewer. There are a number of text tools there. The Boris tools like Title 3D will give you the most control.

  • Title over video degrades video quaity

    When I put a title over the video as opposed to over black, the video quality is severely degraded. It shows up to a lesser degree on the completed dvd but is still very noticeable. Is there a way to fix this or is it just the way it is?

    I have never seen that error
    Look closer. The degradation isn't big but it is there.
    Import a high contrast still image with Ken Burns off. Add a title. Export as Full Quality DV. Open in MPEG Streamclip (or QT Player Pro with high quality display tuned on). The titled part of the video is somewhat blurry and the lines are distorted. The same applies also to video but in a still image this is easier to see.
    Look at the straight lines in this animated example pair:

  • How to create a title over the top of the left-most column in a cross-tab.

    This is one of those things that seems simple until you try it.
    I'm almost there.  I moved the cross-tab from the report header to the report footer so I can have a page title.  I tried using an overlay but it didn't work for any page past the first.
    I can't seem to figure out how to put a title over the left-most column though.
    Thanks in advance,
    J

    I have used a text box, after you type in the text, select the box, and move it to the front.
    then select the crosstab and move it to the back.

  • How do you animate a title placed over video clip

    I have been trying to animate a still title that I have placed over a video clip in expert view.  There is only one line.  I have followed the following which I think I got from the Adobe site:
    Create a title with animated text
    You can easily apply a preset animation to any still title. Text animation presets quickly and easily
    animate the characters in your title so that they fade or pop characters into view, or fly in from the
    top or bottom of the screen. For example, using the Fade In By Characters preset instantly makes
    each separate character in your title fade into view until the title is complete.To preview an
    animation, position the pointer on the Animation tab in the Adjust panel.
    1. Do one of the following:
    In the Quick view timeline, select the superimposed clip. In the Monitor panel, click the clip,
    and then double-click the title text.
    In the Expert view timeline, double-click the title clip.
    The Adjust panel changes to display the text options.
    2. In the Adjust panel, select an animation preset under the Animation tab.
    3. Do one of the following to apply the preset to the title:
    Click Apply.
    Drag the preset to the Monitor window and drop it on top of the title text
    I have had no success no matter what I've tried.  I have a mac.  I would value any suggestions.
    Thanks.

    Thanks. But let me clarifiy what I suspect Barb's issue is
    a. not selecting the Text in the Text section of the Titler before applying the animation in Animation section of the Titler.
    or
    b. what I did not yet write, not using Default text since Text Animation does not work with Default crawl or roll
    or
    c. trying to use more than one line of text without the use of special procedures.
    (I sort of put this thought aside when I replied since Barb wrote
    I have been trying to animate a still title that I have placed over a video clip in expert view.  There is only one line.
    I interpreted that as only one line of text was typed in the Titler, not that there were two lines of text types.
    But, the answer should be one of the 3. More details from Barb should help us to pin point the problem.
    I think it was JohnnyO who first pointed out (your forum at few years back) that you can indeed apply Text Animations to more than one line of text in Premiere Elements Titler, but with the use of special maneuvers. I wrote about this and did a detailed step by step and overview on the matter.

  • Specs and workflow for creating opening/closing titles for video

    I'm trying to create specs/workflow for videos that I will be adding opening and closing titles to (black background with colored text), using QuickTime Player 7 (Pro).
    The videos are .mov, AVC coding, 1280x720, millions, 30fps, a sample video had a data rate of 7,463 kbits/second.
    I created 1280x720 300dpi (perhaps I should have used 72dpi?), saved as a .jpg (highest quality), then copied the .jpg contents into a QuickTime Player 7 (Pro) blank document multiple times until I had enough frames for my need. The resultant video was very large; 339,743 kbps/second. I then exported to H.264, which brings the data rate down to only 214 kbits/second (and looks fine) and then copied that into the head of my AVC coding video.
    Questions:
    1) When I exported to H.264, the x pixels increased by 6, to 1286. After pasting that video into the AVC coding (1280x720) video, the resultant movie is 1280x720. Did my graphic get compressed by 6 pixels horizontally?
    2) Does my method of converting the huge graphic movie to H.264, and then pasting it into the AVC coding make sense? The combined video has AVC coding, according to Movie Inspector; does the H.264 of the graphic get converted automatically? Any better way to approach creating my titles?
    Note: these AVC coding videos may get converted to H.264 for some use, but for now, I'm keeping the highest quality (source) video I have to work with.
    Thanks,
    Bob

    "First, tell use why you're not using FCP's titling and keying capabilities."
    I don't own FCP.
    "Then, explain why you're doing it this way."
    I'm able to create graphics with plenty of control in a graphics program (PhotoShop in this case).
    "There is no dpi in video, there are only pixels."
    Sorry, I posted my thread then realized I left out a bit of info, but couldn't edit the post. I should have written that I created my graphics file in PhotoShop, hence the dpi reference.
    "A black background for text is not the same as using an alpha channel."
    OK. The portion of my video with titling stands by itself; that is, I'm not overlaying titles on existing video. Is there a use for alpha channel if I'm working up standalone title video frames? Uses less data rate?
    It seems from your inference I would be best served by purchasing FCP, so I'll probably take that advice and buy it.
    From a general video production point of view, I'd still like to learn more about creating titles in a graphics app and bringing them into QT Player; what format to bring them in as (e.g., H.264 into an AVC coding video, as I've done, or ?), and what happens when my graphics video gets converted from 1280x720 to 1286x780 (AVC export to H.264), and then brought into an AVC codec movie, and the movie remains at 1280x720-- does the graphic get horizontally widened, or the vertical compressed? Thanks.

  • How do I create a title whose size matches my video frame size?

    How do I create a 1920x1080 title?
    I'm using Premiere Pro CS4 on Windows 7.  I created a default title.  If I right-click on the title in the Project Explorer and select properties, it says:
      Title Size: 720 x 480
      Pixel Depth: 32
      Pixel Aspect Ratio: 0.9091
    If I drag this title onto a sequence onto a sequence created from the "AVHCD 1080i30 (60i)" preset then the title is automagically scaled to try to get it to fit into the 1920x1080 frame, resulting in a tiny title centered in the frame.  I can make things better by right-clicking the title in the timeline and selecting "Scale to frame size", but that's not a particularly elegant solution (and the title, as displayed in the title editor, still doesn't exactly match the title displayed in the previous monitor).
    How do I create and edit a title whose size matches my video frame size?

    Thanks guys!  I created the first title in a 640x480 sequence and didn't notice that I had the option to fiddle with the frame size when I created it.  Subsequently, I created new titles by duplicating a previously created title (which I had set up with desired font, effects, etc.) and just changing the title text in the title designer.  This worked great as long as I was making titles for a 640x480 sequence.  But when I tried to use a copy of this title in a different sized sequence then things got weird on me.  I spent way too long trying to find the option to resize the title before I finally gave up and decided to spend the time to figure out how to post a question in this forum.
    Just to verify how things work, I verified that the size of a new title does, indeed, default to the size of the currently selected sequence.  No idea what would happen if I had multiple sequences displayed simultaneously.
    Any idea how to change the size of an existing title?

  • How do I put a title over a photo?

    I've seen a lot of posts about putting a title over a video clip, but what I want to do is put a title over a photo. I am able to insert titles just fine and same thing with just photos, but I can't seem to combine them. When I try to drag one on top of the other, it moves to the left or right and creates two seperate things. I have made sure that the length and duration of each is the same and also that I leave the "Over Black" box unchecked. Any suggestions?

    What do you mean by it 'creates two separate things'? In iMovie 5, I don't think there was an 'add' button. You have to drag the title 'T' box down to the photo in the timeline. IF you are having problems wiht this, try deleting the iMovie plist and the reopen iMovie and try again. (The plist is in YourUserName->Library->Preferences->com.apple.iMovieplist. Trash that and relaunch iMovie.
    Post back if that does not help.

  • Adding Ken Burns to Image over Video

    I've created a project where during certain points during the video there are images over the video so you don't have to stare at the speaker forever. The audio still plays and you see the image, but I do not have the option to apply a ken burns to the image because it is inserted more as a title rather than a still image.
    Does anyone know how I can apply a ken burns effect to images placed over video in the title track?

    Yes, this can be done. It may be easiest if you start over.
    First, drag the video clip with the speaker to your project by highlighting the clip with a "yellow rubber band" in the Event and dragging it to the project. Now, without changing the "Yellow Rubber Band", use Command-Shift-Drag to drag just the sound from the selected Event clip to the project. Drag it to the beginning of the original clip.
    Now you have a sound track pinned to the original clip, and you can set the volume of the video clip to zero using the audio settings. The Green audio clip will still play.
    Now you can select (for example) 4 second lengths of the video and right click (or command click) and select DELETE SELECTION. This will eliminate 4 seconds (for example) of the video. Replace it by dragging in a photo from the Photo Browser. Set the length of the photo to 4 seconds, and set the Ken Burns settings as you wish. You should now have a video with a ken burns style photo inserted playing over the original sound track.

  • How do I create a title, that behaves like a button?

    Hi,
    I'm using XML to load data from asp to flash. Here's the XML
    example:
    1. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
    2. <news>
    3. <item>
    4. <headline>Flash XML Based News reader out
    today!</headline>
    5. <date>05/09/1986</date>
    6. <message>Today my new xml based flash news reader
    came out, I am so excited!</message>
    7. </item>
    8. <item>
    9. <headline>One day until the Flash XML Based News
    reader is out!</headline>
    10. <date>05/08/1986</date>
    11. <message>Tomorrow my new xml based flash news
    reader comes out, I am so excited!</message>
    12. </item>
    13. <item>
    14. <headline>Two days until the Flash XML Based News
    reader is out!</headline>
    15. <date>05/07/1986</date>
    16. <message>The day after tomorrow my new xml based
    flash news reader comes out, I am so excited!</message>
    17. </item>
    18. </news>
    And here's the ActionScript part:
    1. // Initialize the xml object that our news will be loaded
    into
    2. var news_xml : XML = new XML();
    3. // ignore all whitespaces inside of our xml file
    4. news_xml.ignoreWhite = true;
    5. // when the xml recieves a return from the load() function
    call, execute this function
    6. news_xml.onLoad = function( success : Boolean ) {
    7. // if the xml file was successfully loaded
    8. if ( success ) {
    9. parseNews(this);
    10. }
    11. }
    12. // call the load function on the xml object, passing in
    the url of your xml file
    13. news_xml.load("xmlTutorial.xml");
    14. // this function will take our news xml object and parse
    it
    15. function parseNews( _xml : XML ) : Void {
    16. // first we create an array that holds all the values of
    the item nodes
    17. var items : Array = _xml.firstChild.childNodes;
    18. // now we want to iterate over every item in the items
    array
    19. // and parse the nodes as we see fit
    20. for ( var i : Number = 0 ; i < items.length ; i ++ ) {
    21. // here we set the text of the text field ( news_txt )
    22. // the first thing we add to the textfield is the
    headline then a line break
    23. news_txt.htmlText += "<b>" + items
    .childNodes[0].firstChild +"</b><br>";
    24. // next we add the string date followed by the date value
    in the xml file
    25. news_txt.htmlText += "Date: " +
    items.childNodes[1].firstChild + "<br>";
    26. // now we add the message, then two line breaks, only for
    formatting
    27. news_txt.htmlText += " " + items
    .childNodes[2].firstChild + "<br><br>";
    28. }
    29. }
    So far is everything clear to me. But what I want to do now
    is that after a user clicks on title, next happens:
    the current swf unloads
    the flash sends data to asp (ID of an article and ID of an
    author, which movie to load next).
    How do create a title/button?I know how to make a title to
    behave like a link (just add the
    http://... in the headline tag in XML
    document. But this,..... I just don't know how to do that.
    THX for any help

    2m, you are right. I should tell you about my concept. It's
    all on the paper yet, because this is how I work - first I write
    down everything on paper, study it and the next step in trying to
    make it work on computer.
    I have a main swf, I call it system.swf. System.swf receives
    the info about the swfs, it must be loaded from html tag
    <object><param>. The ID of the movies is send from
    flash to asp and then via <object>back to flash. Does that
    make sense? Is there a better way for that?
    So, the system.swf is loaded for the whole time - let's say
    it on level1. On level 2 are then loaded other swfs.It depends
    which content the user wants to see.
    About the article part:
    first the user sees the list of last articles (title, date
    and short description). When he/she clicks on the title, all the
    action happens:
    flash sends the data which article the user wants to read to
    asp, asp searches in data base for the requested article and
    creates xml, where are title, date and the whole content of the
    article.
    At the same time asp also sends via <object>tag in html
    the id of the swf that must be loaded and the id of the author of
    the article, so the swf, where the pictures of the all authors are,
    will know what picute must load (this is the second swf that is
    loaded on the article part - it's created like a gallery; the
    author of the active article is bigger and if the user wants to
    read the last article of other author, he/she just closes the
    picture and then the images are moving in a slider way and when
    he/she clicks on an image, it get larger and the last artcle of
    this author is loaded).
    And I wonder how can I make this all to happen: when the user
    clicks on a title, all the var action happens?
    If you have better idea how to create this, please, advice.
    THX for the help so far

  • Buttons over video is crashing Apple DVD player!

    I have 4 menus (tracks) that use buttons over video. The first one plays just fine- the buttons come up after a second & disappear 30 seconds later(then the menu continues into a film). The other 3 menus crash 1-2 seconds before the buttons over video forces the subtitle to become visible. here's what i've done to troubleshoot:
    -set a different menu to be first play
    -swapped out the m2v/ac3 files to see if that was causing the issue
    -moved my menus/tracks to different VTSs (using dvdsp 4)
    -shifted the hi-lite markers forward and back to various times
    -swapped out the overlay file
    All my tracks were created exactly the same- using the same BOV structure (13 buttons in all)... I'm completely baffled. One works fine and the rest don't work at all!!
    p.s. i burned the disc and tested it on a regular dvd player.. seems to work fine, but it still crashes on the computer.
    PowermacG4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   DVD Studio Pro 4

    I figured out the problem so I'll wrap up the thread in case someone else runs into this problem...
    I was using dvdSP's ability to "offset" the overlay file in order to make my highlights match up perfectly. For some reason if the offset differs from one overlay to the next in the same subtitle stream, it causes apple dvd player to crash.
    example:
    (all motion menus were created on one track with BOV & then separated into stories for easy targeting)
    subtile(BOV) 1 had an overlay file offset to 0x & -4y & subtitle(BOV)2, my second menu, had an overlay file offset to 3x & -1y.
    The first one would play fine, but as soon as apple dvd player detected the next subtitle it would crash. I solved the problem by editing my overlay files in photoshop to compensate for the offsets & leaving the offset in DVDSP untouched. weird... but it works now.

  • Why doesn't the calendar carry the event title over multiple days?

    When creating a multiple-day event, the calendar does not carry the title over all of the days in the event.  In IOS6, this worked, but with the new IOS7, it does not.  Has anyone else had this problem?

    Apple did design it that way.... Spotlight search will find calendar entries.  See P. 195 of the User Guide... http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_iOS4_User_Guide.pdf

  • Buttons over video, scripting?

    Hey Everybody,
    I'm working on a DVD that has some fairly specific requirements, some of which are negotiable, others of which are not. It's set up kind of strangely because of the limitations of the source footage, I'll try to describe it:
    There are two tracks. Track 1 is an edited version of the source footage. Track 2 contains two angles, a continuous wide shot and a continuous close up. I tried making one track with three angles, but since Track 1 doesn't precisely sync up with Track 2, that didn't work.
    When I took over this project, it was decided that the best way to work around the limitations of the footage would be to space chapter markers every thirty seconds in each track, so that the user can go from, for instance, Chapter 4 Track 2 to Chapter 4 Track 1 by pressing the enter key on the remote. Cumbersome but acceptable.
    What I'm trying to do is set up buttons over video that can go from Track 1 to -either- angle of track 2, and I'm having a problem doing that. I tried just setting targets for the buttons, but I can't set the track, chapter and angle. So I tried a simple script (I'm very new at scripting) that looks like this:
    1 mov GPRM 0, SPRM 7
    2 sub GPRM 0, 1
    3 add GPRM 0, 49280
    4 Jump Indirect GPRM 0
    5 Set System Stream An(2)
    That doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this just a ridiculous idea?
    Thanks in advance for any advice! I really appreciate it.

  • Creating a title

    Does anyone know of any quick and easy-to-understand tutorials for After Effect CS4 that can help me create a title introduction for my videos?
    I want an entertaining introduction with nice animations. I'm new to AE, so the tutorial would have to be "dumbed down."
    I don't need anything professional.
    Thank you!

    There are lots of tutorials about text animation. This page lists several that are good: "Examples and resources for text animation"
    If you have a more specific sense of what you want to do, then ask or do a search using the After Effects Community Help search. For example here's a search for graffiti tutorials that pulls up a great tutorial on the Video Copilot website.
    If you're just getting started with After Effects, then I recommend reading this: "Getting started with After Effects"

  • Creating a Title: Incomplete Insructions in Manual

    Here are the instructions for creating a Title (abridged)
    1) Select a text generator
    2) In the Viewer, click the Controls tab.
    3) In the Text field, type the text that will appear in your movie.
    Then it says this:
    Once you’ve created your text generator clip, you can add it to your sequence.
    Umm, hello? How to create a text generator clip?

    I read the question differently. I think qamera has already done the steps in the three instructions he quotes and then wonders how to "create a text generator clip" AFTER he's done those three steps. If so, here's the answer: By doing those three steps, you've already created the text generator clip. You don't have to do anything else to create the clip. You can now drag it from the viewer either directly into the timeline or over to the canvas and use the overlays to get it into the timeline.

  • Script format question: Title over

    Question: In the script format when using a "TITLE OVER" is it a General, Shot or an Action format. Appreciate any input here, thanks.
    Rich

    It a good question, as it is worth thinking how the elements in our screenplays will be used down the line. So for example, although the formatting of making it a Shot certainly would put TITLE OVER in caps, and making it Action would allow the paragraph it is in to be lower and upper case, it better to think how the elements may be used as metadata when you move on from writing, rather than how they look on the page. The tags and elements will be used by others in many different ways as the script moves through the planning and shooting steps.
    Shot elements will be processed by an application like Adobe OnLocation which will create a placeholder shot for it for the shoot. That could be theoretically correct in this case as the title will need to be shot. However to answer your question I think General is the appropriate element, just as the Title and Author are General on the titlle page.
    Are there other elements of the screenplay that will need to be tagged in special ways so they are available as the right kind of metadata later in the production process?
