Creating a trail of dots along a motion path

Using image 'dot 2' and a motion path I want to re-create the old movie cliche of the dot which leaves a trail to show a journey from point A to point B. Currently I have Dot2 happily moving along a motion path from A to B - any ideas on how to create the trail of dots behind it?

One quick follow-up. This was easy with paint stroke tool as per the advice. One last step...the stroke 'write on' stops on frame 300 but the clip lasts until frame 400. Ihave th speed of write on set at natural. Currently the stroke disappears when the write on finishes. How do I get the final stroke outline to persist for another 100 frames? I thought there might be a 'hold last to end' as per Livetype font settings....but couldn't find it - or is using keyframes the answer? Thanks.

Hard time with "controlling speed along a motion path"

Actually I have hard time understanding the description of this topic, page 776, chapter 48 of the user manual.
I have been able to create 2 keyframes in my clip.
But when it comes to adding Bezier Handles it becomes very tricky.
By Control-clicking a keyframe, I am able to see and choose an option from the shortcut menu, but I am not able to see what has happened. I do not see any Bezier handle not to mention this famous velocity handle (small purple dot).
Unless someone can understand and pinpoint my exact problem, I would like to know if there is somewhere another documentation that could help me with this topic.

Thanks for trying Alchroma, but you cannot help much since I have been very confused.
What I wanted to do is more related with chapter 50 (Changing Clip Speed) rather than chapter 48.
But chapter 50 explains how to change the clip speed to another constant speed.
I would like to change the clip speed to a variable speed instead.
But this is explained nowhere in the user manual.
I thought this was possible with FCE4.
I saw this feature on Apple web site when I was shopping around before I bought FCE4.
I went back to Apple web site and realize this feature is part of FCPro instead.
Now, with FCE4, I do not see any other solution than chopping my clip in several sub-clips and adjust each of them to a different speed.
I will give a try but I am afraid the transition between each sub-clips will be visible.
Any better idea ?

Unable to set custom speed to motion path on Camera

This is a followup question to "Controlling speed along motion paths"
(Many thanks to Mark Spencer and specialcase for the their excellent insights getting me this far =)
After experimenting with motion paths and realizing they were indeed what I was looking for, I set up my project so that the camera would follow specific paths along 2d images. Everything worked perfectly until I tried to modify the speed along which the camera travels along those paths.
In the motion path, in the speed drop down menu, I can select Constant, Ease in etc.... all the way to Custom, but they work slightly differently than I expected: while before (ie. applying motion curves to objects as opposed to the camera) I was able to getting a diagonal line in the Keyframe Editor where I could modify keyframes using bezier curves to adjust the speed, now, choosing the various speed options appears to change the "Transform.Position.X" and "Transform.Position.Y" curves directly.
When I select "Custom", "Motion path" and Custom Speed" appear in the keyframe menu above the Camera drop down, but its curve appears only as a dotted, completely horizontal line in the graphing window. The "Transform.Position.X" and "Transform.Position.Y" curves also revert to horizontal dotted lines. If I try to add curves to the custom speed line, the X and Y curves remain horizontal and the camera does not move.
Is there some reason I cannot get custom speeds for cameras without losing my motion path data?
Is there some way to work around this?

I'm not sure if there is some setting I have wrong:
When I try this, while I am able to set keyframes, the motion path data is reset. (ie. the Transform X and Transform Y curves reset to 0).
In the Keyframe Editor, I can make new curves for the X and Y values and for Timing, but the camera does not follow the motion path, it follows the new x and y curves. Trying to get those curves to match the motion path exactly is a large hassle.
This might help:
If I apply the motion path to an shape rather than to the camera, everything works perfectly (the object moves along the motion path, and I am able to set keyframes for the Custom Speed curve with no problems whatsoever). If I then copy the motion path directly from the shape and paste it to the camera layer, the path appears as a red curve (as it should), but the camera does not move.
Is there some way I can upload the motion file so that you can see what exactly is going on?

Motion Path jitters

Hi guys,
I have a particle emitter running along a motion path to create a 3D stroke. It looks fine over a period of around 4 seconds, but when I shorten the behaviour the motion path becomes jittery and the smooth path becomes jagged. At first I thought this was due to the speed interpolation - I had it set to natural so it slowed on curves, but then I set the speed to constant and the jitters continued. Maybe I'm producing too many particles?
Have a look and tell me what you think.

Hi,
I've tried this and yes it does get smoother, but I don't want it to take longer. I want it to shoot across the screen in about a second, I have to bump it up to four seconds to get it to play smoothly. As mentioned I've tried changing the way it speeds up, but still no joy. I'll have another mess around with it today and see if I can fix it.

Motion Path Advice needed!

I'm a newbie to Motion but absolutely love it. I'm using version 3.0.2 and want to learn how to move objects (or the camera) along a 3D sphere (or globe) shaped path. static example: http://twitpic.com/3wnm6
Any advice? Thanks in advance for anyone willing to share tips or tricks on how to do this.

For starters, maybe get a sense of Motion's 3D playing field:
Create a new project.
Create a Rectangle Shape.
Add a Motion Path to it.
Click on Add Camera. This switches your project to 3D.
Make sure 3D overlays are on in View.
Change your view to Top (top left of Canvas).
Ctrl click one or both of the Control Points of the Motion Path, choose Smooth, and adjust the Bezier Handles to give the path a pronounced curve for the Rectangle Shape to move along.
Change your view to Perspective (ctrl p). Orbit the Camera to get the right view.
Press play and see how the Rectangle moves in 3D space.
You can see how you could also apply to this Motion path to the Camera instead of the Shape.

Select the Motion Path of a PageItem

Does anyone know a way to select (or access) the Motion Path of a PageItem with animation applied using ExtendScript?
I know it appears as a graphic line in the document, but I'm wondering if there's any connection between the animated item and the graphic line that represents the motion path.
item.animationSettings.motionPath (and motionPathPoints) give the relative numbers, but I'd like to get my hands on the actual InDesign object. Any ideas?

Motion Paths moving behind and then in front of text - PROBLEMS

I'm working on a motion project where I have 2 lines of text and am using a particle emitter on a motion path. I've got the emitter moving along the motion path behind my text and then I want the emitter to move in front of my text and cover the fade out of my text. Giving me the swipe look. I've set the motion path in the TOP and LEFT view to properly move from the background to the foreground. Yet when I export the emitter is still in front of all the text. I've tried placing the emitter below all the text in the same 3D group and still no luck, the emitter stays behind the text the whole time.
Anyone have any ideas?

Controlling speed along motion paths

I have created a motion document in which still images are given keyframed motion paths (in 2 dimensions). I would like to vary the speed at which the images move along their paths in between those keyframes.
I tried to apply variable speed time remapping using bezier curves (with the same keyframe locations as those on the x and y motion curves), but it seems to have no effect whatsoever.
If I first render the animation and, in a new file, apply time remapping, variable time remapping works perfectly, but I am trying to do this before rendering.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy,
This is where the Motion Path behavior really shines over traditional keyframing of position. If you use Motion Path to animate your object, you can set the behavior's Speed to 'Custom', which lets you set a single progress keyframe. This makes it ridiculously easy to control the speed, as well as do reversals, etc. You'll have a single velocity curve to animate in the Keyframe Editor.
Motion Path is one of Motion's biggest unsung heroes for animators.

How can I mass move symbols with their motion paths without creating new keyframes?

I want to move a lot of symbols all at once if they are off centered or just need to be moved around to see differenr styles across the document, but I can't seem to move a lot of the symbols at once, only one at a time slexting their motion paths. It's rather annoying when I have items coming in at different times and have to re line everything up one by one if I want to move things even over by 1 px. Every time I slecect all my symbols and try to move them it just creates a new keyframe that they follow. Is there any tool or certian way to select the symbols and/or thier motion paths and move them without creating new key frames?

There's no direct way of moving all the symbols/ motion tweens begining at different frames altogether, but the following steps should help you do it -
1. Select a motion path on stage, goto Properties panel > Options menu (top left corner) and enable - Always show Motion Paths.
2. Enable - Edit Multiple Frames option in the Timeline.
3. Adjust the frame-markers in Timeline to show all your symbols, motion paths etc.
4. Now that you see all your symbols and motion paths together, Select-all and Move them together. Or, use Shift + click to selectively select the Motion paths/objects and move them.

Do you want to ADD it to an existing Project? If so, then you can just Copy/Paste the trailer project onto an existing project. Otherwise, just Share(export as a QT vid) and import it back into iMovie to add to your other movie. Hope this helps.
p.s. did you finalize the trailer project?

I met a problem when I ran 'rman' to backup database . It said that,
"unable to create audit trail file"
what cause this problem ,somebody told me that the privilege is not proper .
I am confused ....

Privilege may not be appropriate or the volume where the audit log resides may be full.

I have followed the instuctions on Oracle's site:

specifically the Blog pages by Sergio and Anthony and have encountered a couple problems:
1) I got this error when running the db config assitant (dbca) as per Anthony's steps:
ORA-09925: Unable to create audit trail file
I was running this from a shell while logged onto the gui as my admin id (mtaylor) then running
sudo -u oracle sh
then running the ./bash_profile commands, altho I had to
cd /Users/oracle
cat .bash_profile
and then copy and paste the commands since running
./.bash_profile
and then testing by running
echo $ORACLE_HOME
gave me a blank line.
I thought that logging onto the gui as mtaylor might be the problem since I was getting 2 errors in the shell as the java initialized:
ATSFontGetFileSpecification failed: error -5000 (twice),
2) so I decided to log onto the gui as the user oracle and then open a shell. Doing this, I get to step 12 of 12, press finish and nothing happens at all. It doesn't freeze tho because I can cancel and exit with no problem.
I went back to mtaylor and tried again and now I get the same result. I may have done something else to fix my first problem meanwhile as I have been working on this for a few hours.
I have confirmed that I am specifying the correct directories in the dbca, the .bash_profile and the files below, and that the owner:group is oracle:oinstall with r/w access:
ORACLE_BASE=/Volumes/u01/app/oracle
ORACLE_HOME="$ORACLE_BASE/product/10.1.0.3/db_1"
PATH="$PATH:~bin:$ORACLE_HOME/bin"
