Creating a VPN from my remote powerbook to a stand-alone network Hard drive

I would like to set up a VPN or V secure access from my powerbook to a Network Hard drive so when I travel I can securely access my data over the internet on my hard drive at home, when I have my powerbook with me.
I dont want to have to buy another computer and wondered if I can acheive this with a Networked hard drive, and my router. If so I envisige purchasing a suitable NAS like a Maxtor shared storage plus or a Lacie mini ethernet disk. I have an old router which I may need to update, but wondered if I need to get anything specific for this job?

If your router can accept VPN connections then this should be possible.
You will also need a static IP address from your ISP.
However most consumer routers do not support incoming connections (VPN) in this way, so I would suspect you would need to upgrade your router to one that can.
However you may find using something like a .mac account may be an easier and much cheaper option.

  • CQ57 Create recovery software from one laptop to fix a second w/ new hard drive

    My son's CQ57 will start in Safe Mode only.  I ran the setup diagnostics and the hard drive failed.  I bought and installed an equivalent size hard drive.  The disks that may have come with this laptop are at my exwife's house and she can't find them.  I have a similar CQ57 that was my other son's.  Can I create the necessary recovery software from mine to get the new hard drive going?  It is Windows 7.

    Usually Recovery Discs from one machine will not work on another ,unless they are the same model.
    You can usually order Recovery Discs for less than $20. Contact HP Support in your country /region to order a set. Worldwide contact info can be accessed here>>Contact HP

  • Export from iMovie to stand-alone DVD hard drive

    I want to preserve camcorder home movies edited in iMovie. The DVD recorded from iDVD won't play on my existing DVD player. Could I use the hard drive of a stand-alone DVD recorder/player to import from iMovie? I don't currently own one.

    A key consideration is the amount of free space on your boot hard drive. You will probably need a minimum of 15 to 20 GB to complete your project in iDVD. If you will have this amount of free space after copying over the files, go ahead.
    BTW, if you plan on making several copies, make your first 'burn' to a disk image on your hard drive (it's an option under 'File' if I remember correctly).
    Verify the disk image with Apple's DVD Player and then burn the copies you need with Apple's Disk Utility. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006

    Recently, I have been unable to import all of the "songs" or discs from multi-CD operas in itunes to my ipod classic or Seagate network hard drive. Only 1 or 2 discs or 20 or so "songs" out of a  total of 40 - 80 import despite plenty of available space in both devices. When I check itunes, each opera disc with all of the "songs" are listed. Very frustrating! Any suggestions?

    right click on the songs that do transfer and select create aac version then re sync

    Help please

    To build on the second option provided by The Edmeister make sure that you have your Sync Key, if this is not the case Firefox Sync will not help you (data is encrypted with that Key).
    Finally, if the last sync happened long time ago, it may be the case that your data is not on the servers anymore. Firefox Syn wasn't designed as a back up service.

  • Creating Encrypted Time Machine Back Ups to a Network Hard Drive

    Hello all, I can't seem to create an encrypted Time Machine back up on a network hard drive.  Can this be done?  And if not, why not?  It seems that Macs have all the necessary functionality already available in Mac OS. Time Machine can create encrypted backups with multiple computers so what's the difference if it is to a network backup drive, honestly?  Any suggestions?
    My Set up:  Three Macs, Airport Extreme Base Station, Seagate 3 TB HD (with separate partitions for each computer's backups).  2 of the Macs use ethernet to connect to the network and one uses wireless regularly.  Basically, I'm trying to encrypt my family's backup drive and I don't know how or why I can't.
    Thanks in advance for the help.
    Appleguy514

    First, you need to know that backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
    Second, no, you cannot encrypt a network backup on Lion or earlier.  Only Mountain Lion.

    Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If the problem remains, update to 10.6.8 and repeat.

  • I have 2 different MacBooks (owned by 2 people) connected to my Time Capsule. I want to use the Time Capsule to back up both MacBooks separately from each other. Can one person access the hard drive of the other person, on the same Time Capsule?

    I have 2 different MacBooks (owned by 2 people) connected to the same Time Capsule over a wifi network. I want to use the Time Capsule to back up both MacBooks separately from each other. Can one person access the hard drive of the other person, on the same Time Capsule? Is there a way to ensure that the files on the 2 laptops are kept private from each other? Thanks!

    If someone really wants to do something, it won't take them long to find out how to do it.

    Security on a Time Capsule is a bit like installing a lock on a tent. It will keep the honest folks out, but probably not the others.

  • Slow importing photo library from network hard drive

    I have about 20GB of photos stored on a network hard drive. I'd like to import them into iPhoto but I don't want to store them locally on my macbook pro as it will take up too much space.
    I followed the advice from previous posts and set up my library on the network drive - however the import process is taking way too long. Last night I was able to get about 100 photos in 3 hours. I eventually gave up and stopped the process. I realize that transferring via the wireless network is slowing things down but there has to be a way of doing this that doesn't take several days. I didn't have this problem on my PC using Adobe Photoshop Elements - it was able to import the same number of files from the network drive in less than an hour. I watched iPhoto while it imported a single (small) photo - it took about a minute just to import a file less that 1mb in size.
    any sugestions or should I just stick to Windows?
    Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I'll try the wired connection tonight - I do have other devices that access photos/mp3's over my wireless network (eg. xbox360) that seem to have no difficulty with speed.
    Do you think it would make any difference if I imported in smaller groups (maybe one folder/50 photos at a time) rather than trying to import my entire photo album at once (3000 photos). It might take a few days, but it is a process I could run in the background while I surf. Just curious if iPhoto cares - does it take the same amount of time to import 50 photos 20 times, versus 1000 photos in one shot...?
    thanks for the advice

    Once I upload my music library to the Cloud can I then remove it from my computer to free up space on the hard drive?

    iTunes Match does not allow streaming to a computer.
    If you want to utilize the media on the computer, it must physically be on the computer.
    Also, if syncing media from the computer to an iDevice, the media must be physically on the computer to sync.  Removing that media from the computer will remove it from the iDevice it is synced with.
    iTunes Match is not a backup and should not be utilized as single storage for content.

  • Creating 2 dataproviders from one remote object

    Hello,
    I have created a remote object that populates an
    arrayCollection to be used as a dataprovider for a pulldown menu
    item. In one instance I want to append data to the dataProvider to
    show an additional item in the list and in the other dataProvider I
    just want the data returned from the Remote call. The problem is
    that when I add the additional item to the list it is also
    reflected in the second arrayCollection. How can I use one remote
    call to populate 2 separate arraycollections and not have changes
    made to one of the collections reflected in the other?

    Not quite... What I have is one datacall the populates two
    different arrayCollections that are dataproviders. In one of the
    arrayCollections I'm adding an additional element (i.e. Show All),
    but in the other array collection I don't want the additional
    option to be visible. When I add the additional element to the
    first arrayCollection it modifies the second arrayCollection .
    Here's my code (short hand):
    [Bindable] array1:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection();
    [Bindable] array2:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection();
    private function getData():void{
    ----Code to get data from server here
    ----call to function to handle result();
    private function handleResult(e:ResultEvent):void{
    array1 = e.ResultEvent as ArrayCollection;
    array1.addItemAt("Show All", 0);
    array2 = e.ResultEvent as ArrayCollection;
    When I add the item to array1 it is also reflected in array2
    and I don't want this as these ACs are used to populate pulldown
    menus. Hope this helps to clarify...

  • Problem creating an image from a remote url

    I am creating a servlet which does the following:
    1. retrieves an image from a remote url
    2. resizes the image
    3. sends the image to the client.
    The servlet works fine when I run it on my PC, but when I run it on the server, it doesn't. Here's the problematic code
        private Image getRemoteImage(String imageUrl) throws Exception {
            System.err.println("in getRemoteImage()");
            if (!imageUrl.startsWith("http://")) imageUrl = "http://" + imageUrl;
            URL u = new URL(imageUrl);
            System.err.println("imageUrl: " + imageUrl);
            HttpURLConnection huc = (HttpURLConnection) u.openConnection();
            huc.setRequestMethod("GET");
            System.err.println("connecting...");
            huc.connect();
            System.err.println("Getting DataInputStream...");
            DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(u.openStream());
            //DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(huc.getInputStream());
            System.err.println("...got");
            int numBytes = huc.getContentLength(); //1063
            System.err.println("numBytes: " + numBytes);
            byte[] imageBytes = new byte[numBytes];
            System.err.println("reading fully...");
            in.readFully(imageBytes);
            System.err.println("...read");
            in.close();
            System.err.println("creating imageIcon");
            ImageIcon imageIcon = new ImageIcon(imageBytes);  //   <-- problem here
            System.err.println("** THIS LINE IS NOT REACHED **");
            System.err.println("creating image");
            Image image = imageIcon.getImage();
            System.err.println("returning image");
            return image;
        }When I access the servlet with FF, the browser reports:

    I've tried that (along with all other kinds of techniques I never knew existed). I think it might be a problem with the Tomcat setup - it may need to run headless (sounds a bit severe!...).
