Creating a WDS with an Airport extreme
I wanted to see if it was possible to create a WDS with an Airport Extreme as the base station and a regular Airport (snow version) as the remote. If it is possible and I hardwire into the ethernet port on the remote station will that work?

Yes, a second Extreme Base Station or Airport Express would do the job.
The disadvantage of using an Airport Extreme Base Station or Airport Express in this manner is that it cuts your overall wireless network speed in half. You might find that to be a completely acceptable, and un-noticeable, price to pay. However, there are other ways to connect non-wireless devices to a wireless network - many other companies sell wireless-to-ethernet adapters that will function on any manufacturer's wireless network.

Create a WDS with Airport Extreme and Belkin Pre-N
I would like to setup a WDS using my Airport Extreme Base as the main router and a Belkin Wireless Pre-N (F5D8230-4) as a remote client. I have done this successfully using Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS routers (using Sveasoft's firmware upgrade which has WDS), but haven't been able to get a good configuration for the Belkin, nor have I been able to locate a firmware for it.
At this point I'm not concerned about encryption, so leave that variable out. I just can't determine what settings the Belkin router needs to work. I've tried a lot of combinations based on my experience with the Linksys models.

WesThe Linksys models you reference are some of the few items that will work with Apple's implementation of WDS.
I don't believe that the Belkin device has that ability. -
Setting up TC on N (5 GHz), with older AirPort Extreme and Express on B/G

I've done a search through the forums (and the net) to see if I can find a solution to my query, but the answer currently escapes me so I thought I'd ask outright....
I have recently purchased a Time Capsule. Previously my wireless network relied on an AirPort Extreme Base Station (one of the older white models that looked like a UFO) over 802.11 b/g which was extended by an AirPort Express (again, non-N).
What I would very much like to do is create a setup that has the Time Capsule running 802.11 N only over 5 GHz, with the AirPort Extreme connected to it over Ethernet and still running a B/G network out with the Express.

However, I can't for the life of me work out how to do this. If someone could help me out I would very much appreciate it.For the TC, I suggest that you change the Radio Mode to: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz).
For the AEBS & AX, I am assuming that you still want them as an extended wireless network ... correct? If so, all that would need to change is the following for the AEBS:
o Connect the AEBS directly to one of the TC's available LAN (opposing arrows) ports by Ethernet. Connect this Ethernet cable to the WAN (circle-of-dots) port on the AEBS.
o Reconfigure the AEBS as a bridge. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
o You may want to rename the AEBS/AX wireless network with a new Network Name (or SSID). This is totally optional, but may prove helpful as a reminder that you only want non-"n" clients to connect to it. For example, and with absolutely no imagination on my part, you could name your TC's wireless network: My Really Fast Network, and the AEBS/AX's: My Not So Fast Network.
o Finally, you will want to be sure the the AEBS/AX wireless network is at least 3-5 channels away from the 2.4 GHz network provided by the TC. This will prevent any Wi-Fi interference between them.
The WDS settings created earlier when you configured the AEBS & AX for an extended network should remain the same. -
How do I use existing TM backup with upgraded Airport Extreme?
I replaced my old Airport Extreme with a dual-band Airport Extreme. I was previously using an external drive connected to the old AE for Time Machine backups. I now have everything set up, I can see the drive on the new AE in the Finder and select it in Time Machine preferences, but it doesn't show "Oldest Backup" "Latest Backup" information and I fear it's going to try to create a new backup when it runs. How can I get it to use and add to the existing backup?

No, it won't show that until a backup is done. See #B3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

I have a Airport network at home with a Time capsule connected via ethernet cable to modem. Also the network is extended wirelessley with an Airport Extreme. I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme. Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.

Issue
Please help as I'm having issues with my WDS network. I've setup using both the wizard and manual and also hard reset on both units to setup again but cannot get them both to communicate to one another. Both units are showing green LED under their configuration. For my last attempt, I've tried adding the Airport ID (MAC) of the Airport Express to the Access Control and also DHCP Reservations on the Airport Extreme but still no luck.
The Airport Express (setup as remote) does not even show up in the Airport Extreme's Summary as Wireless Clients. In the WDS tab, the Airport Extreme is set up as WDS main, Allow wireless clients box checked and WDS Remotes has the Airport Express' AirPort ID in the list. On the Airport Express, WDS is set up as remote, with Allow wireless client box checked and the Airport ID of the Airport Express in the WDS Main.
I can connect clients to both units. Both units are configured using the same Network Name and have the same WPA/WPA2 security key. The Airport Extreme (main) however is connected to my broadband so any devices or clients connected to it are able to get outside. Connected devices or clients are assigned IP address via DHCP with IP 10.0.x.x. If wifi devices or clients connect to the Airport Express (remote) they are assigned a completely different IP addresses 169.254.x.x, they are not able to browse the internet or talk to other clients connected on the 10.0.1.x network. The Internet Connection configuration on the Airport Express (remote) is Connect Using Airport (WDS) and Using DHCP. I've even tried manually and entered the IP address 10.0.1.199 that I had assigned to the Airport Express from the Airport Extreme and Router Address as IP of Airport Extreme (10.0.1.1).
I think I've tried everything but I'm still having this problem. The remote Airport Express is not extending my existing Airport Extreme network. Any ideas???Christopher,
This may or may not be helpful, or it may be something you've already tried or are aware of so I apologize if that's the case.
I have been researching ways to set up the Dual Band Network supported by the AEBS and came across your post. I've got an AEBS and (2) AirPort Express set-up currently (AEBS is main and the Express are participating in the WDS as remotes) and I'm trying to configure one of the Express to utilize a 802.11b/g compatible network while the AEBS runs a 5Ghz 802.11n Only network.
AAR, since the AirPort Express are 2.4Ghz 802.11b/g ONLY (no support for 802.11n), you have to be sure to set-up your AEBS first and select "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" in the Radio Mode drop-down on the AEBS before you attempt to connect an AirPort Express. The AEBS should be set-up as your "WDS main" and the Express should be set-up as a "WDS remote" for the network you established when you set-up the AEBS.
Bottom line here is the Express won't be seen by the AEBS unless the AEBS is 'looking' in the 802.11b/g 2.4Ghz frequency.

I am experiencing network failures with my Airport Extremes: the main router is a 2nd Gen, the extension a 5th Gen.
The 5th Gen keeps on losing connection with the main router and thus with the internet.
Any ideas why?Is the second Extreme configured to "extend" the network created by the first? If so its position must be such that it has a strong wireless connection to the first Extreme. If it is at the limits of the first one's wireless range its connection will be tenuous. Place them closer together and determine if that makes a difference.

Help setting up Open DNS with new airport extreme
I cant seem to get Open DNS to work with a new airport extreme. The status says I am not using Open DNS and its not filtering anything. I have followed the exact steps for set up listed on their website, checked the dns settings, cleared both caches and restarted the computer, modem and router with no success. I set the airport up in bridged mode, although I tried the other option under setup, but not sure what I was doing? I picked up this router because I wanted easy set up and the apple store assured me it would work with Open DNS. Oh, and I also downloaded the latest firmware update on the router. Can anyone help me with the settings or what else I need to check?

I found that your device is mentioned as follows in the intro under Section 1 of this document:
The BellSouth supplied Westell 2100, 2200 and 6100 models (Models A90-210030-04, B90-220030-04, and B90-610030-06/C90-610030-06, respectively) share many features and functions.
Next, I am referring to the information under Section 2, under the heading of Standard Default Mode Connection (separate hub or switch present). Unless you have changed the configuration on the Westell, this is how your device is operating. In this mode, the Westell device is acting both as a modem and router in one unit.
So, an attached router (AirPort Extreme) must be configured as a switch to work correctly. That is what Bridge Mode is....the AirPort Extreme is operating as a switch when it is in Bridge Mode (which would be the correct setting to use when the Westell is set to its Standard Default Mode).
Any changes that you want to make regarding DNS settings would need to be made on the Westell device, since it is acting as the main router on your network.
In Bridge Mode, the AirPort Extreme simply passes that information through to its connected devices. You will not be able to make any DNS related changes on the AirPort Extreme since it receives that info from the Westel device. Some service providers force you to use their DNS servers, so you might want to check with Bell South or AT&T for more information in this regard.
If you want to be able to configure the AirPort Extreme as the main router on your network, and instruct it to use the DNS information that you want, you will need to refer to the section under the heading of Bridged Ethernet Mode ( separate router present).
Please note that the first item under this heading specifies that "This is the preferred configuration when using a separate external router..." (which would be the AirPort Extreme in your case)
So, it appears to me that this would be the way that you must reconfigure the Westell device to allow the AirPort Extreme to function as the "main" router on your network. In this type of setup, you will be able to enter the DNS information that you want to use under the setup for the AirPort Extreme and it will act as you instruct.
The AirPort Extreme would not be configured in Bridge Mode for this....it would be configured to "Share a public IP address".
The next item in the article specifies that you "Must use a PPPoE client on the Router." This means that the AirPort Extreme would be configured to Connect Using = PPPoE as follows:
AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = PPPoE
You would enter your user name (probably your email address), password, etc in this area. Leave the Service Area box completely blank. Set Connection to Always On, and Disconnect if Idle to Never
Click Update to save the new settings. Power off the Westell device after this and then restart it so that it will pick up the new information that you have programmed into the AirPort Extreme.
I want to stress that this is how I would try to configure the Westell and AirPort Extreme. But, as I said, have not used a Westell device, so I cannot say that this will work correctly for you.
It might be an excellent idea to contact Bell South or AT&T Support to ask for their opinion on this before you decide to change the configuration of the Westel device and the AirPort Extreme.
This type of thing can be intimidating for users, so you might elect to use the services of someone like the Geek Squad at Best Buy, or a similar service from a local computer firm. Perhaps the Apple store could help as well.
If it is not critical that you use Open DNS, you might want to simply leave things "as is", with the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode. -

I purchased a new Airport Extreme at the Apple store today and have it connected with a new Zoom 5341J. ISP is Comcast. I hooked everything up and I do have a solid connection....however my 2008 MB pro and iPhone 6 are maxing out at 30mbps on wireless. I had over 100 mbps hardwired. Its weird because it stops right at 30mbps during OOKLA speedtest. Something isn't right. I am hooked up to 5 ghz at channel 161.
Any suggestions?thanks for all of the help!!
Nevermind I figured it out myself. The zoom modem I was using is not compatible to VOIP, so I just went back to my technicolor and put it in bridge mode with the airport extreme and I am now getting 130mbps+ both wired and wireless.

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule? It used to work with old Airport Extreme network, run from a intel iMac with updates thru Mavericks but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA and can't connect to Time Capsule. Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades). Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems. But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule. Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it. Is there a work around? Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower? Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network. I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.

Problems with Bonjour, Airport Extreme and OS 10.4.3
I have a networked, HP Photosmart 8450 printer. The printer was connected to both an iMac 20" and PowerBook G4 15" running OS 10.4.3. Yesterday, I lost the ability to print from the PowerBook. I have identified it as a problem with my Airport Extreme connection.
The iMac can see the printer just fine, and it shows up using Bonjour when I browse printers in the Printer Setup Utility. The PowerBook, however, cannot see the printer - that is, it does not show up in the browser, but only when I use the Airport connection. However, when I connect the printer to the PowerBook via USB, or when I plug a network cable in to the PowerBook, it sees the printer immediately using Bonjour.
It appears, then, the problem is with my Airport Extreme card. Has this issue been identified by anyone else/Apple? Perusing the discussion boards, it seems others have had this problem.
PowerBook G4/iMac Mac OS X (10.4.3)Thanks for the response, however, my question remains: I'm wondering if anyone else with an Airport Extreme ("b" version) and OS 10.4.9 installed has a problem using Admin Utility 4.1.1 and/or Airport Setup Assistant 4.1.1? Specifically, the problem is, after resetting the Airport Extreme, I was able to set it up using the Setup Assistant (establish the network, set the password), but thereafter, it does not show up in the Admin Utility at all (but the Extreme's lights flash as it is being accessed) and in Setup Assistant, it shows up, but there are "errors" when trying to change settings. It is very odd.
When I was running 10.3.9, I had had no problems setting up/administering my Airport Extreme. Suspecting the Extreme itself, I even had an Apple Genius inspect it at the Apple store, but it was pronounced in working order. I might try to check the Airport card inside the G4 (by trying it in a friend's G4). If this communication problem is not shared by anyone else (ii.e., a software issue), it could be my Airport card. -

I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...

WHY is my iMac so SLOW with my Airport Extreme?!?!?
I have an iMac G5 and an Airport Extreme base station. I just opened Safari on the iMac and in the time it took for it to open the Apple home page I was able to go to my backpack, dig out my HP Netbook, turn it on, log in to Windows, open Safari, and navigate all the way to this page and start typing... and my iMac is STILL trying to load the Apple home page... WHY, APPLE? WHY?? I love my iMac, why won't it work with my Airport Extreme? Everything else I have works fine, in the same locations, and the iMac worked fine when I had a Belkin router... ever since I got this Airport Extreme the iMac has turned into a big white web-surfing glacier. ...Whats's the deal?

If you have three or four bars of signal in from the airport it is probably related to the internet cache and not your Airport. But, I also noticed you are using Leopard (the Vista of OSX). Install Onyx and run Automation. Make sure you selct the internet cache in the settings window.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard. It is 30 bucks well spent. Leopard is a monster! Also, as much as I am a macaholic, Google Chrome is a much better browser than Safari.

I have been unsuccessfully trying to extend the wifi of my Time 2T Capsule with an Airport Extreme 2nd Gen. It works for a while and then loses configuration. I have done everything possible, disconnected it, reset it but it keeps failing, what to do?
What model and firmware is the 2TB TC?
What firmware is the AE?
Does the AE get good signal from the TC in its current location?
Signal can only be extended that is received intact.
Is it extending on 5ghz? As I remember it a Gen2 AE is only single band, although you can choose either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
I am fairly sure you are going to tell me your TC is AC model..
I would do a couple of things..
1. Fix the wireless name, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
2. Fix the wireless channel for 2.4ghz so it is not going to jump around.
3. Get real results from the AE in its current location for signal strength.. this is really only possible on v5 utility. And that is a double pain with Mavericks because you cannot use it.
Apple have removed all the useful diagnostics from the airport utility. There is next to nothing left. So you need to use the computer and its diagnostics to find signal levels in the location.
