Creating a website for a newspaper

Good morning:
I am looking to take my weekly newspaper online in 2008. I
use Adobe Indesign and Pagemaker for the complete printed layout.
I have Adobe Dreamweaver (V8 i think). What is the simplest,
quickest way to bring this printed pub to the web as an enhancement
for my readers?
Thanks,
Greg Moore

> Perhaps it outputs
> it?
InDesign can output xml.
Dw can them input the xml into a dw template (if the template
has editable
regions for each of the named xml fields)
another option might to try with GoLive, it would import the
pdf file and
produce an html conversion (though it might be a monster of
page code,
haven't used it)
Is it a weekly paper?
What a small local weekly is doing is they got hosting with a
"site builder"
included. Trellix i think. They assign a person to put 2
stories a week on
the site using cut 'n paste into a web form. That way they
have a web
presence but aren't giving away the entire weekly for free.
And it's 5
minutes work to make the updates.

  • Is there an apple app for creating a website for family

I am looking to create a website for family members as we have move OS. could someone please help me out.

iWeb does exist, but Apple no longer sells it or supports it and has not done so for the past 2 years now.  If you wanted iWeb, then you would have to purchase it from Amazon as an iLife 09 or 11 boxed set.
There are lots of other alternatives out there that work with a Mac, so go and take a look at RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express 6, Flux 4, WebAcappella 4 and EverWeb at http://www.everwebapp.com. EverWeb is the most like iWeb that you will get.
With most of these you can download and try before you buy.
There are plenty of alternatives out there - just take a look.

  • OS X Server & creating a website for a small business.

I am a small business owner with limited computer skills. I would like to know if downloading the OS X Server App from the App Store will enable me to host my own website using iWeb to create it? Building the website seems professional and easy enough using iWeb but I lack the knowledge to publish it having never done it before. My business has a website already which is hosted through the website designer but I like the flexibility of updating it myself. How tricky is it to do? Are there any guides, tips, suggestions or pitfalls I should be aware of?

This is centrally a question of where you want to spend your time.
Are you interested in learning about DNS and IP and networking and troubleshooting and security and maybe also DMZs and VPNs?   About keeping the riffraff off your server?   Basically, do you want to be IT here?  If you do, then OS X Server does quite well, and it's not particularly difficult to deal with — this difficulty factor as servers go, that is.  Servers are inherently more involved and more complex than clients.
If you'd rather not be IT here, then either using a tool like Sandvox or hosting your site via a content management system would be preferable; there are shared hosting services around which offer WordPress or Drupal or other content-management system hosting — I'd tend to go with a CMS and not iWeb, but there are various hosting services where you can upload your website.  They will typically deal with web server and the mail server and DNS and backups and the rest for you.  These hosted services are inexpensive, too.  I presently use MacHighway for some hosting (disclaimer: no financial connections, except as a customer).
If you want to split the difference here between running your own and outsourcing this, then you might want to enlist some help to get things set up and running, and to help you learn where the problem areas are, and that you can call when something goes sideways.  Or you can work with your web designer to migrate into a content management system (if that's not what you're using already), and where the web designer can deal with various parts of the presentation and the content and related, and you can also access and update content via the web interface.   If you want to experiment with a CMS, WordPress and Drupal offer hosting (via WordPress.Com and Drupal.Com), as do other entities.
Linc Davis is quite correct, too: the Internet can be unforgiving of mistakes with servers.  This can be why you might want to invest in a good firewall with a DMZ and a dedicated server, for instance.  Should the riffraff breach the web server, they're hopefully still contained by the DMZ and thus don't have the run of your business network.

  • Creating individual websites for Family pack... getting complicated

    Dear Forum,
I just purchased a MobileMe family pack so that all of my family members could have their own website. So, now we have 5 difference websites created under iWeb, we want to publish them. But it seems that iWeb is only signed in under the master account (all of the websites list the original email and domain name under "MobileMe account"). How do I (as the family's designated tech rep.) change this? How do I assign a specific account to each website? I've played around extensively but this one thing eludes me.
    ~Rogers

I already did that. But when I log in to the account and open iWeb, it still puts it under the wrong Account Email/Domain name. I need to know how to change this. When I open iWeb, and go to the "Site Publishing Settings" it has the master account email listed as well as the incorrect url/domain name. How do I change this to make sure I don't overwrite the wrong website?

I have a search box on my webpage, and I have all the data that I need in a folder.  Not sure how to link the data to the search box.  The desire is when a user selects a number( say 100) then it will display the cover sheet, and links to the drawings associated with that number. I have all documents (cover sheets & drawings) in pdf format. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  • Creating website for someone else

so ... what i would like to do is create a website for an artist friend who is not all that computer literate ... then teach him how to tweak/add new content etc ... we both have macbook pro and iLife09 and mobileme accounts
what i would like to be able to do in an ideal world is to be able to log into his account and upload stuff so the site is accessed using his URL and for both of us to be able to make changes ... i am thinking that is not going to be able to happen
i am guessing the right way to do it is to transfer the files to his macbook and upload them from there ... but i would like to be able to tweak and adjust things if he gets stuck
does anybody have any insight or experience of doing this?
can i just move files form a folder on my mac to a folder on his and iweb would find them as if they were created on his mac?
can i then make changes and send him the new page to overwrite the current page?
am i asking too much of this software?
input appreciated ... we are both going to be in the same room with our macbooks next week so i need to have some idea what i am doing by then

That can be done either by the method linked to by Tom or by Old Toad's Tutorial #21 - Managing an iWeb site from multiple Macs with Dropbox.. The only caveat to this method is that both can't be working on the site at the same time if it's in the Dropbox. If you think both might work on the site at the same time the file can be moved out of the Dropbox, edited and then placed back in to transfer to the other computer automatically.

  • Creating a website in Pages

    Hey,
Does anyone do this with good results?
I am trying to create a website for a film I will be producing/directing.
    Chris

    Hi DaFilm!
The choice of the editor depends upon your own abilties in Webdesign and your ambitions in the future.
NVU (or Dreamweaver): very powerful, you can expand your site in almost every way including exotic techniques like php or so. You need at least good basics about building a website.
price: NVU is free, Dreamweaver very expensive
iWeb: if you want to make a personal project on .mac without any greater ambitions, without scratching even the surface of webdesign it´s your choice (the exported html-code is far less than optimized, perhaps in version 2.0 you can really use it)
Sandvox, Goldfish and Rapidweaver are inbetween iWeb and NVU (or Dreamweaver). Easy to use templates and you can change the look (theme) of the entire site with one click. With iWeb you can´t. If you wan´t to develope your site by learning advanced techniques you can use pure html or php by inserting. Sandvox and Goldfish are brandnew with some good features. RapidWeaver is (almost) in Version 3.5 containing the expiriences of some years of development.
    All of them are about 35 - 49 $
    Regards,
    A.W.

  • Can I create & publish site for another .Mac user?

My wife is a .Mac member and I piggybacked a .Mac e-mail address through her account. Now I'm trying to help my father, a recent Mac convert and .Mac member, by creating a website for him with my version of iWeb 08. When I open iWeb on my computer (first time as I've always used Dreamweaver to create websites), I'm locked out of pretty much everything (I'm assuming because I'm not a full .Mac member which it's somehow linking to). If I have my father's .Mac info, can I create a site for him and upload it for him on my computer, and if so, how would I do this?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    ~Chris

All you need to do to post to his .Mac account is find out what his .Mac username and password are and input them into the .Mac pane of System Preferences. That will give iWeb access to his .Mac space. If you end up getting your own .Mac at a later time, you will have to change that info in System Prefs.
I created a separate user on my computer for a 2nd website that I publish for my church. That way I keep all the iWeb and .Mac account info separate without having to jump through any hoops - I just have to switch users.

stores the data in a database which is then displayed on a page for

this/advice me on what i need to do for this/or any video tutorials
i could buy which explain something similar to what i need to do?
    many thanks in advance

  • 2 computers & 2 Websites for one iMac Account/one iDisk, strange issues

Hi. I know this looks like a long post but PLEASE bear with me and read on, I am in desparate need of advice.
My husband and I share one .mac account, which we've had for a couple of years now. We've used it to publish countless homepage pages with movies and pictures with no problem.
We have 2 computers in the house. The desktop is an iMac (dome base) and the other is an iBook. With iLife '05 and homepage, editing pages was not a problem from either computer. That's the beauty of .mac and iDisk, right?
Now, with iWeb, we have an issue. I built a website with podcast using iWeb and Garage Band (thanks to help from advice here) and even successfully puchased a domain name and redirected it to that site. I worked on the desktop.
    It can be found here:
    www.clevelandcelticpodcast.com
Just after I finished and pointed the domain name, my husband created another website for school. (He is a teacher.) He used iWeb and the iBook laptop. His can be found here:
    http://web.mac.com/elmhead/iWeb
    NOW, HERE'S THE PROBLEM
When I open iWeb on the desktop, only my site shows up in the site organizer bar. When he opens iWeb on the laptop, only his site shows up in the organizer bar.
Yet, any time I try to make a change to my page, these things now happen:
    1. The changes look like they are applied before publishing
    2. Publishing upload bar appears as normal
    3. "Announce/Visit" window that pops up points to HIS website, not mine
    4. When I go to my website on my own by typing in domain name, no changes are shown
    5. His site does not point to any of my pages and seems to work fine.
Please note, when I go to the .mac homepage and log in, all my homepage sites are still listed... but NEITHER iWeb site is listed!
Huh? Thanks in advance for any help.
    Wendy

Problem as I see it is you can't do what you are doing. But let me get it right before I start, you say you are redirecting your site from your own domain name, therefore I assume you are still publishing it to .mac and so is your husband.
iweb makes a local copy of your site on your mac, which is updated everytime you save, but when you publish it sends data to .mac (straight to it-if you have a local copy of your idisk on your mac, it doesn't put it there)
All the data you publish goes in a folder called 'Web' (your old homepage stuff goes in a folder called 'Sites'), inside the folder called 'Web' is another folder called 'Sites' (nothing to do with your homepage 'Sites' folder) and inside that is another folder called 'iWeb', this is where all your data goes when you publish.
When you publish, iWeb creates more folders which it puts in the 'iWeb' folder, (there is likely more than one folder it creates, but that is not relevant for the moment) all your files are placed in these folders except one, which is placed directly in the 'iWeb' folder. This file is called 'index.html', it is always called this, because this is how browsers find your 'home' or start page.
You may now be able to see what's coming. When your husband publishes his pages, his iWeb also creates a file called 'index.html' which his iWeb also wants to put in the iWeb folder. Result is it overwrites yours, there is no way around this the way you are doing things.
I would suggest sharing a domain file between you, but since your husband appears to need to work on his site at the same time but in a different location, you would be unable to share it, so I won't even go there.
There are a couple of workarounds, but I would be inclined for one of you to publish to a folder and upload manually to a folder you have manually created in the 'iWeb' folder on .mac (with a unique name)
In this example I will use the folder name 'Charlotte'.
So your husband (say) continues to publish as normal. You mount your idisk and create 'Charlotte', i.e. iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/Charlotte, when you are ready to publish, go to the file menu and choose 'publish to a folder'. It will ask you for a URL, you would type in 'http://web.mac.com/elmhead/iWeb/Charlotte' and you would choose a folder (say) on your desktop (say called 'my site') to publish to.
Once you have published you would need to upload everything inside 'my site' to your .mac account, which you could do by placing everything inside 'my site' into Web/Sites/iWeb/Charlotte on a local copy of your idisk and syncing or use something like 'transmit' or 'captainftp'
You would get to your husbands site from the address he is using now, you would get to yours using 'http://web.mac.com/elmhead/iWeb/Charlotte', you would also need to redirect to this address from your new domain name.

  • How can I create a log for the dice roll generator on my website?

    Here is my website: http://gator789.hostgator.com/~stillman/index.html
I want to create a log for each time the roll button is clicked to generate a random image of a six-sided die on my website. I was thinking maybe a MySQL database with PHP would get me what I want? I have no idea how I would start setting this up though. I don't want to sound to pushy here, but I would also like to have a form setup above the roll button for name details, etc. How would I go about doing this?

I don't understand why you need a log to generate a random number.  The logic behind a random javascript image generator with a math function is all you need.  Put your gif images into an array and let the script do the rest.

  • Using iWeb 09 to create website for showreel and videos

    Hello,
I'm an independent film maker and I am looking to set up my own website to show my work on. Seeing how iWeb 09 finally allows you to publish your website to a host via FTP, I wondered if anyone could answer some questions for me - I have googled some stuff but have not come up with any satisfactory answers.
Okay, so basically I want a really simple website - incredibly simple in fact. All I want to do is have live streaming video (like the movie trailers on apples movie trailer website) for my own films. Of course, I want the videos to be of the highest quality (with some HD stuff as well). I have found a web host that offers unlimited web-space and bandwidth/traffic for a very cheap price each month, so is it simply a case of dragging a QT movie file into iWeb 09, publish it via FTP, and hey presto, people can view my films in high quality on the web? Is it really that simple or is there a catch?
Also, I may want to show some videos encoded with Flash, not QT. Is that still possible using iWeb 09?
Many, many thanks if you can clear up these queries for me, as I cannot seem to find any clear info anywhere else.
    George
P.S. I will be using FCP, not iMovie, to create and export films. Since they can both export QT files, I presume this will not be a problem?

George ~ Yes, there's a catch. Your videos will become part of iWeb's Domain file which may make it slow to open in iWeb, make backups and re-publish everything (if needed). Better to upload your videos separately to your server and embed them into your iWeb site.
iWeb '09 makes this easy if you upload your videos to YouTube: iWeb '09 has a new YouTube widget to embed your videos into your iWeb page:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/#widgets
...For high definition video, YouTube was recently ranked the best of several video sites:
Which HD video Web service is the best?
    See also this article:
YouTube officially enables HQ in embedded videos
Also, I may want to show some videos encoded with Flash, not QT. Is that still possible using iWeb 09?
If you're concerned that some PC users won't have QT and won't want to install it, I think if you go the embedded YouTube route, almost all PC or Mac users will be able to view your videos — because "videos on YouTube are streamed through an Adobe Flash player."
If you'd prefer to use Flash in iWeb, this article may help:

Just create a new page (or use the existing photo page) on your external site and use html to add an iframe sized to the page and link it to the mobilme gallery page. Works for me just fine when showing my gallery from a yahoo site.
    like this
    <iframe scrolling="off" allowTransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="yes" style="width:100%;height:100%;border:none" src="http://gallery.me.com/your_account_name"></iframe>
