Creating a white gradient over a photo

I need to create a white gradient text box over a background photo. Please take a look at this sample:
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=13EWsrgyHCHak3Aqfn6SvNPkyvbNd
This was created with the blend tool, but I don't like the hard dropoffs at the edges of the white. I want to create a gradient white going top to bottom, but with an opacity dropoff (with soft edge) so top and bottom are 0 percent as shown.
The problem is, I can't figure out how to apply different opacities to different parts of the gradient. I'd like to make the center 100 percent, and grade out to zero top and bottom. Any way to do this? Or is there another tool I should be using?
Thanks,
Eugene

It's a dodle.
Let me introduce you to the wonderfull world of opacity masks.
Click on the layer (the white box in this case) that you want to fade at the edges, make sure the transparancy window is open (if not: Window>Transparancy) and left click the little arrow in the top right hand corner and click "Make opacity mask".
Now left click once in the little black box that's just appeared in the Transparancy window.
Now draw a box exactly over the white box (you can over the side edges with no problems in this instance, but it's best to do best practices).
Now with this new box selected create a gradient that goes from 100% black to white (in the middle) to 100% black again. You need to make sure it's pure black, I don't work in CMYK normally, but I know that if I am working in RGB I need to make sure I am using black and white RGB values and not CMYK (that could be "fixed" in CS4).
Make sure the gradient rotation is going the right way and your pretty much done.
You can alter the colour saturation levels to tweak the transparancy level.
Once your done click the left box in the Transparancy window.
Now your done, the Opacity Mask will remain attatched to your artwork until you de-tatch it.
Hope that helps and is actually what your asking for.
Regards
Paul

I'm using Lightroom cc, I'm trying to create a develop preset. I'm making changes to one photo that I want to apply to many other photos, one of the changes is to blur the background using the adjustment brush. When I am blurring I am going over the photo several times, when I go to create the preset the adjustment brush is not an option to check. How do I add the adjustment brush to the develop presets. Thanks Ron.

The adjustment brush cannot be added to a develop preset.
If you can replace the adjustment brush with a gradient filter or radial filter, you can add those to a dev preset.
If a gradient filter or radial filter is not an option for you, you can at least create an adjustment preset to remember your brush settings.

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 displays only raw photos correctly.  If I correct redeye or touch up a photo I get white boxes over the eyes(if correcting redeye) or the thumbnail and photo turns mostly white. Note: I have an NVIDIA card.

Do you remember the days when Apple wrote robust code ?  The latest updates have not been great.
Maybe the programers are outsourced to a foriegn country now or Noobs out of school ?
It looks like someone isn't paying attention to the editing layer... I write code.  and when you edit an image you store the update in another layer. The method enables you to easily undo edits.   I "upgraded" to 10.9.1 and was forced to update iPhoto.    After I uploaded photos from my camera I noticed redeye reduction results in just white squares over the eyes. I also noticed issues if I attempt any photo edit funcition in iPhoto.
This means to me that iPhoto 's editor is saving video from the wrong memory location.
I have a NVIDIA card because I write CUDA applications on my Mac.  An NVIDIA card enables me to write CUDA and OpenCL apps.
Here's what happens if I attempt to straighten an image:

As you can see Mavericks may have made some improvements but overall it does not get the job done as it used to.
I am willing to bet  that your graphics code has devolved into ATI centric code.
I booted into macos 7.5.1 and the issue with the same hardware older operating system and apps works fine.    I just wish I never deleted my 10.6.8 install.  10.6.8 was the most stable on the MacPro.   Everything worked.     From 10.7 up I've noticed a decline in dependability.
Can you please fix this or design a work around ?    Switching over to an ATI graphics card is NOT a good answer.
Also I noticed Cinebench R15 benchmarks are higher in 7.5.1 verses 10.9.1

Where in that other topic is the manufacturer of the graphic card or even a graphic card mentioned.?  You may have known what kind of card you had but we're not mind readers.
Since it appears to be a incompatibility between that particular card, Mavericks and iPhoto you should keep telling Apple about it by contacting them via

  • I have a white haze over photos when taking a picture with my flash

I have a white haze over photos when taking a picture with my flash.  What can I do to fix it?

After the ios7 update, my wife's phone began having these same issues and we assumed it was a flaw with the update.
But  after some trial and error, we concluded it was the illumination of the  white plastic backing of the iPhone 4.  We tried a different protective  case, we blackened the apeture of the black case with a black sharpie,  none of those things worked.
It  was noted that the white and blurry photos only occurred with a case  installed.  Without a case, the photos were perfect.  It is a *** issue.
Since  we were using a case and appearance was not that big of an issue, I  decided to apply a strip of black electrical tape with holes punched out  for the camera and flash mechanisms and reapplied the protective case.   This tacky fix solved 95% of the white blurry look to the flash photos.
So  a work-around is to apply a non-transparent piece of tape, or sticker  with appropiate sized holes for the camera lens and flash LED on the  back of the white plastic phone case.  It's tacky, it's a poor design  from apple, but it works.

  • Photo Stream white area over part of image

    Hi,
I seldom use iCloud Shared Streams, but made one from Aperture 3.5.  When I view it on my iPhone (iOS7.x) it has a white area over part of each image, for 'likes' and 'comments'.
How do I turn this off, so that I can see the photos instead of these text fields etc.?
    Thanks for any pointers.

  • How to create an OPACITY Gradient?

First, thanks to Andy Mees, whose very handy Gradient Filter I've just added to my FCP Effects arsenal. It came from this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1526509&tstart=45
What I was actually searching for though is slightly different. Specifically:
Is there a way (an existing FCP feature; a clever workflow; or a 3rd party plug-in) to manipulate the opacity of a clip spatially, separate from the current ability to control a clip's overall opacity temporally (by keyframing different values)?
In other words, is there a way I can define (in both shape and size) an *opacity gradient* for a given clip?
As an example, let's say an effect where the clip's opacity progresses smoothly from 80% on the left edge of frame to just 10% opacity on the right edge -- allowing any video layer(s) beneath that clip to be very visible near the right edge of frame, but barely visible the closer you look to the left edge of frame.
Just to be clear: I'm not wanting to change the darkness or lightness (or color) of part of the clip in the way you normally think of a gradient operating -- just the opacity, but over a flexibly-definable gradient. Ideally, this opacity gradient could be linear or radial (or even other shapes?), with both its shape, and the opacity values assigned to its beginning and end points, all keyframe-able.
So -- does anything like this ability already exist (and am I going to exclaim "D'oh!" when I hear what it is), or is this an effect which is easier asked-for than achieved?
    Thanks,
    John Bertram

    Sure...
Create a Custom Gradient from the "A" (viewer window) RENDER - Custom Gradient.
Create one that goes from BLACK to WHITE left to right.
Change the BLACK color luma slider to something around 80% black and the WHITE color luma slider to something 10% White (or 10% black if you want to get technical!!)
    THEN...
Put video in V1 and the gradient in V2 and the second level of video in V3. Right Click (control click) the V3 video and set it's COMPOSITE MODE to Travel Matte - Luma.
Remember, the BLACKER it is the more will show thru from the bottom layer.
    Best of luck...

  • How to Create a consistent Gradient w/ Soft Edge & Filter

Hello, Im using photoshop 6, and Im trying to apply an effect for a banner photo, that will be consistent for other banner photos of the same size.
I've attached a photo of this.
As you can see the gradient (which contains the text) starts with a grey color then transitions to white. The right edge that meets the blue sky isnt a hard edge but rather a soft edge.
Im not sure how to create that soft edge. Someone else had mentioned to use the gradient with colors from grey to white then to transparent to create that soft right edge.  Im not sure how to set that up.
I used a brush in this case, and as you can see, the line is uneven.
Also I believe the Filter used here is Ripple or Ocean Ripple.
I was hoping if someone could walk me through what the correct steps would be to create that effect, so that I can use this consistently for several photos

Oh, I see, PS 6. The parts here about Fill Layers and Layer Styles won't apply, but the editing method is the same:
First, open the Gradient Editor by clicking on the Gradient in the Option Bar or the dialog for a Gradient Fill Layer:
Set up a Gray-to-White Gradient, and add a transparent stop just pas the White stop:
Enter a name, and click on "New" to save it. You can also save as part of a Layer Style with Gradient Overlay.

  • How to create a halo gradient for web 'master page'

    Working with PS CS5.5.
I am needing to create a 1000px x 650px background image for a web application. I would like the resulting file size (PNG) downloaded by the web-site to be in the 50kb realm.
What is the general strategy for creating a gradient like the attached file?
Should I start with a solid background color and overlay the solid with a white gradient layer (center being less transparent) ... this in my mind would result in the smallest file size given that I could decrease the resolution (of the exported PNG file) without any visible effects on the web-page.
    Please advise,
    Brad

There may be many ways to do it, but you could render a round radial gradient fill layer, adjust it to taste, then save as PNG and just resize it to whatever dimensions you like in the HTML, which could get you the oval shape.  Or you could rasterize it in Photoshop and save as a "squashed" version for a possible small savings in file size.
The above 500 x 325 pixel gradient saved as a PNG is about 50 kb.
This one was cropped, rasterized and squashed vertically, and takes only 26 kb on disk.

  • Trying to change solid white to transparent in a black to white gradient in one layer of a psd file

    Hi everyone
I have a multilayered psd file. All layers should remain opaque except the black to white gradient layer where I need the white to be transparent. So that when I oplace the final psd on top of a block of solid colour in Indesign the gradient shows the background colour through where the black fades off.
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Mark

Thanks for your reply. I am attaching a lowres psd file where I need to save it with top layer opaque and 'shadow' layer transparent. So that when I place it over solid colour in Indesign the gradient allows the background colour to show through where the balck is fading out.
    cheers

  • The white line over the text in a title

how can I enlarge the white line over the text in a title to not have the text out of the frame when I want to add another line?

If you are speaking of the white bar upon which you are entering text in say a 'gradient edge' title, click title in the inspector window having the title selected. There you can change the width of the horizontal bar:
In the screenshot above I have used gradient edge title. The bar is of black color and you can change the color to white or any other color by tinkering with the controls in the inspector window [red oval]; you can also increase or decrease with the bar's width by changing its parameters within the 'yellow rectangle'; and, if you so need, you can push up or push down the bar by manipulating the bar vertical position tool located below the yellow rectangle.
Hope this helps. If the white line you have mentioned above is something other than the bar I have referred to, then let me know. Cheers. Have a great day.

  • Black to white gradient?

I am following a tutorial and need to select a fill for a shape and choose the Black to White Gradient swatch from Gradient Panel
    1. I do not seem to have the black to white gradient. I only see the fade to black gradient swatch. Is this the same thing, if not how do I get the black to white gradient swatch?
    Thanks.

This is the problem the default is Black to White this is what you are missing. You may have accidentally selected one of the other preset gradients and the default is then lost and you have to recreate it or reset the preferences and then save it before making a new one or create a new document which will also reset it. But to do it with the document you now have you have to recreate it. Watch the videos

  • How do I put a title over a photo?

I've seen a lot of posts about putting a title over a video clip, but what I want to do is put a title over a photo. I am able to insert titles just fine and same thing with just photos, but I can't seem to combine them. When I try to drag one on top of the other, it moves to the left or right and creates two seperate things. I have made sure that the length and duration of each is the same and also that I leave the "Over Black" box unchecked. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by it 'creates two separate things'? In iMovie 5, I don't think there was an 'add' button. You have to drag the title 'T' box down to the photo in the timeline. IF you are having problems wiht this, try deleting the iMovie plist and the reopen iMovie and try again. (The plist is in YourUserName->Library->Preferences->com.apple.iMovieplist. Trash that and relaunch iMovie.
Post back if that does not help.

  • Creating a white background

Hello.  I am trying to create a white background in my images; eliminating shadows in the photos.  Currently, I am using the quick selection tool to wrap the image, then I'm clicking on the oval icon in the bottom right corner, and I'm clicking on curves, and moving the graph to the upper left to get a pure white background.  My question is there another way to use the quick selection tool to wrap the image?  I'm asking this because when I'm using the quick selection tool, it doesn't always cover the right areas of the image.  Is there a way to wrap the image at the pixel level to get a more accurate selection of the image, so other areas do not get selected when using the quick selection tool?

  • How do you create a white fade to clear?

I'm working in the first CS.
I have an 8.5 x 11 box filled with a multi-colored blend (using the gradient tool).
I want to draw a small thin white box over top of it that fades from 100% white to zero (clear).
I cannot figure this one out. I know this is a very easy "do" in Photoshop, but cannot get this to work in Illustrator.

You will need to use an Opacity mask (from the Transparency Palette) with a black to white gradient.

  • I emptied my iPhoto trash but it tells me there are over 300 photos in my trash yet I can't find them and the trash looks empty?

After problems with iPhotos I emptied my iPhoto trash but it tells me there are still over 300 photos in the trash yet it looks empty and I can't find apparently still existing photos. How can I make the number go and tells me my trash is on zero?

    First ry the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the above doesn't help continue with  the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
