Creating a window server 2008 virtual appliance.

how to get there?

What you mean by Windows Server 2008 Virtual Appliance? If you mean how to run Windows Server 2008 on a VM then simply you need to have a hypervisor (Hyper-V, VMWARE ...) and then you can create a new VM the hypervisor, specify the ISO file or install media
location for Windows Server 2008 and create the VM.
If this is for evaluation then you can get the VHD from here in case you have Hyper-V: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16572

    Hi,
Brian is right, for mange the Server 2008r2 sp1 we recommend use the Windows 7 or 7.1 platform.

  • Unable to Install Windows Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V

My attempts to install are failing with a message "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing....Error code: 0x800705070".
I am posting this on the Wondows 2012 Server forum but I have had exactly the same problem as described below with Windows 2008 R2 SP1.
As the title says this is on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 host with all current updates. I have downloaded the ISO file from a Technet subscription file twice, once by direct download and once by the Akamai downloader. The virtual disk is connected with
the default IDE driver. I mounted both installation images as ISOs, located on a file system on the host server.  I have tried installs by deleting the VM and recreating both the VM and a new virtual disk, re-using a previously created virtual disk, and
deleting the partitions in a previously created virtual disk, and executing the format command, and then attempting the install.
I have exactly the same problem trying to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM on the same host OS.  With those attempts, I downloaded the Technet subscription iso 4 or 5 times, and burned one to a DVD which I attached to the created VM.  Same
    error message.
The virtual machines and virtual disks I created and used were all located on an RAID5 array, on a builtin Intel RAID controller using Intel Rapid Storage Technology software version 11.2.0.1066.  The host Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 uses this file system
but the OS is installed on a dedicated drive (C).
I had previously created a guest VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 (several months worth of updates ago) without drama.
I have spent hours reading forums and blog articles on this.  A common response is to download the iso another time, and/or burn it to a DVD instead of mounting an iso image. Although I didn't do the later yet with 2012 Server, but I have done these
other steps attempting to install Windows 2008 Server SP1. The install process takes a while (not to mention doing multiple downloads). Given this seems to be a common recommended remedy, and indeed based on posts does seem to eliminate the problem is some
cases, why doesn't somebody change the Microsoft installer program so it does a thorough integrity check at the beginning of the install process?

    Jeff,
After the exercise of Windows 2012 Server successfully installing (as I described above) I also successfully installed Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V.  From my standpoint, I have eliminated the problem (which isn't the same as correcting the problem).
The answer to your specific question regarding Hyper-V support is that the motherboard I am using, an Asus P5Q, is not supported by Windows 2008 R2 because it doesn't use ECC memory, and the vendor doesn't say it supports Windows 2008. But I am sure you
know the motherboard vendors often don't test older motherboards with newer software versions.  It appears that in specifying ECC memory Microsoft is trying to protect users of Windows Server from hurting themselves, not saying the software won't run.
Having said that, my suspicion in the beginning was, and still is, that it was some variable(s) left in an unknown state in the Hyper-V environment, which was why after trying to install Windows 2008 R2 several times I tried Windows 2012 which resulted in
the same error, and then encountered the same error trying to install Windows 7 on the same Hyper-V installation. The specific Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 server had run without any operating problems for months before I started having trouble, and although it
had been quite a while since I had created VMs, that process used to work.  The hardware didn't change. What changed was applying updates through Microsoft Update, and a few access control rights I changed, and at least I think, I set back to their original
    value.
So in short, no, my hardware isn't supported by Windows 2008 Server.  Two, your assertion that you are running the same software configuration that I am is very unlikely to be true. There are an extremely large number of things which are different between
your test system and mine, such as which Windows 2008 components are installed, what updates were installed and in what order they were installed, and what other third party software each of us is running, and between AD, and all the features, a large number
of potential differences in ACLs, options, etc. and I don't for a minute think this particular problem was caused by the underlying hardware.
I do appreciate your taking the time to try to help me, and I hope there is one thing you and I could agree on. Microsoft could pretty easily make it much easier to isolate problems. In this day and age reporting hex error codes (as opposed to doing the
table lookup in the error handling proc), and not providing more diagnostic information seems to me to be almost quaint.  And in this case Microsoft can dismiss my problems on the grounds it was all on unsupported hardware. Unfortunately, I think they
are missing an opportunity to make their software better, because in my opinion what I encountered there are a set of conditions which will cause installations to fail that aren't going to get corrected.

  • How to add a cloud machine as a node to existing windows fail over cluster having on-premise node in Windows server 2008 R2

    Hi All,
We have a windows fail over cluster having one windows machine on local network as one of its node.
I want to add a virtual cloud machine available on microsoft azure as another node to this existing cluster.
Please suggest how to do this?
    Thanking all in advance,
    Raghvendra

Before you even start working on the SQL side, you will need to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster with no shared storage.  You can actually test that in-house.  Create a VM running 2008 R2 and cluster it with your physical (from your description,
I am assuming physical) 2008 R2 machine. Create it with a file share witness for quorum. Then configure your environment to see that it works as expected.
Once you know how to configure the cluster between physical and VM with a file share witness, build it to Azure.  The location of the FSW gets to be an interesting choice.  To have a FSW in Azure means that you will need another VM in Azure to
host the file share, meaning you have two quorum votes in Azure and one in-house.  Or, you could create a file share witness on an in-house system, giving you two quorum votes in-house and one in Azure.
In the FSW in Azure scenario, if you have a loss of the in-house server, automatic failover occurs because two quorum votes exist in Azure.  With FSW in-house, depending on the loss you have in-house, you might have to force quorum to get the Azure
single-node cluster to run.  Loss of access to Azure reverses those scenarios.  Neither one is optimal, but it does provide some level of recoverability.

  • FTP logon issues on IIS 7 using Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi, I'm currently experiencing issues when trying to log on to an FTP server I created using Windows Server 2008 R2.
The FTP web site has Enabled both Anonymous and Basic Authentication.
On the Authotization Rules it has enabled Allow All Users and Anonymous Users with read permissions, and the local administrator with read and write.
Whenever I try to log on, either via IE or Command prompt, when asked for credentials, I get logon failures, either with anonymous or a username that has access permissions to the FTP root folder.
I tried changing the FTP application pool identity to Network Service, but still get the same error. I also have tried testing the connection from the basic settings section of the FTP Site, and when I test it using Application User (use pass-through authentication)
I get an error that says: ¨IIS Manager cannot verify whether the builtin account has access¨If I instead use a username and password, the test passes ok, however using this account to try to enter the FTP site I get logon failure, even when the account
I´m using is a local admin account.
The Server is part of an AD Domain.
I have read a few blogs and forums about problems with FTP validation but nothing related exactly to my issue.
    Any ideas are deeply appreciated.
    thanks
    Eduardo Rojas

Hi, I would tend to ask on IIS forum (iis.net), as you might get more attention and help there.
For your issue, I would tend to think that you need to set the correct security on the FTP's home folder, but again it's only an advice, as I'am not an IIS's guru.

  • What happens if I don't activate Windows Server 2008?

Hello. I currently have some Windows Server 2008 virtual machines that I use for school labs. They're legitimate copies (they came with the MS 70-642 lab manual), but I forgot to activate them at school and I remember that I only have 12 days left to activate.
Will I still be able to use the Windows Server 2008 machines after the activation deadline? Will any features (AD, IIS, DNS, etc.) be lost?
    Thanks.

I am sure once the trail period has expired it won't allow you to log on. I think after you put username and password it comes with the activate screen and won't let you pass untill you activate it.
You might able to increase the trail period with the following method. I hope you still have some time left.
Click Start, and then click Command Prompt.
Type slmgr.vbs -dli, and then press ENTER to check the current status of your evaluation period.
To reset the evaluation period, type slmgr.vbs –rearm, and then press ENTER.
    Restart the computer.
I think you can do this 5 times.
    Thanks

  • Dymo Labelwriter printers not working via Mac Remote Desktop connection into Windows Server 2008

I'm having a really hard time getting Dymo labelwriters (models 335 turbo and 450 turbo) to work over a remote desktop connection and I'd appreciate any help you can offer.
To briefly describe the situation, I'm working for a Doctor's office, moving their IT from a remotely-hosted environment where employees connect to their Windows Server 2008 virtual machines (hosted off-site) via Windows 7 machines through Microsoft's remote
    desktop software.
The new setup will have new servers running in-house instead of remotely and will be based on Apple's Mac Mini machines running Windows 7 for some tasks through Parallels virtualization
software running directly on each employee's Mac Mini.
We have 3 of the Dymo 450 Turbo products and one 330 Turbo, each connected directly to a Mac Mini.
Here's the problem: I have Microsoft's Remote Desktop software running on the Macs natively, connected to each employee's virtual machine on the remote server for now, until the time comes to make the switch to using the new in-house server. The remote desktop
software works fine - employees are able to connect successfully and access their desktops fine. I have the "Forward Printing Devices" option checked in the Microsoft Remote Desktop app so that the hosted virtual desktops can see the local labelwriters.
However, the Dymo Label software running on the remote server will not recognize that a labelwriter is present.
If I go to the Printers and Devices window on the remote server, the labelwriter shows up fine, named "dymo labelwriter 450 turbo (redirected 10)" however running the Dymo Label software gives an error, "Dymo label says no printer connected:
dymo label printer requires a dymo label printer be installed and connected ..."
To try and narrow down the cause of the problem, on the same Mac, I ran Windows 7 via Parallels and set up a new remote desktop connection within that Windows VM. Just to be clear, instead of using the RDC software running in the Mac OS, this new connection
is using a Windows virtual machine running on the same Mac, with the RDC being established from within that Windows VM. Again, I forward printing devices and the labelwriter shows up in Printers and Devices on the remote server as "dymo labelwriter 450
turbo (redirected 10)" This time, the Dymo Label software recognizes the attached labelwriter and runs fine.
I'd appreciate any advice you can give on why, as far as the remote server is concerned, a forwarded labelwriter from Microsoft remote desktop running natively on a Mac isn't recognized
but it is if forwarded from within Windows, bearing in mind that the labelwriter shows up on the remote server in both instances and is called the same name in devices and printers.
Sorry for the long-winded question. I hope you can help me.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Firstly please check whether you have driver capable for your printer with MAC MRD. Also I would like you to check with updated MRD version 8.0.9 for MAC OSX.
    https://itunes.apple.com/in/app/microsoft-remote-desktop/id715768417?mt=12
Because as you have commented it can work with windows RDP, so please also try to contact Dymo Labelwriter printer and inquire regarding the issue.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Error While Creating Windows Server 2008 SP2 32-BIT Virtual Machine

I am facing an error while creating a Virtual Machine on the Cloud. The Error is below:
    Error (610)
Virtual Machine Manager was unable to find a value for the required Sysprep parameter ProductKey.
    Recommended Action
Add the missing Sysprep parameter either to the answer file or to the operating system configuration, and then try the operation again.
My Template does not have the Product Key defined.  The OS is Windows Server 2008 SP2 32-BIT.  Is defining Product Key absolutely necessary?  I have other Templates for other Operating Systems and they are working fine.  Only facing problem
    with this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

In the SCVMM world a 'template' is composed of the following: a VHD with an OS that has been generalized (sysprep), virtual hardware profile (settings), and an OS profile.
The OS profile is required to have a product key.  A MAC activation key at the minimum.  But the key is required.
If you deploy a VM from a VHD, the same customization assumptions are not at play.  Which is why it succeeds.  (there is no template in this case, there is also no requirement that the OS in the VHD be sysprep'd).
SCVMM has rules.  And lots of things don't make sense until you begin to understand them and play within them. (I am not saying that the SCVMM rules are a good thing, just saying they exist)

  • Cannot create Virtual Directory in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Environment

    Dear all,
I am trying install Reporting Services 2005 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise machine.
So far we successfully did the following steps
     - Install SQL Server Reporting Services
     - Configure Service Account (Domain-User)
After creating virtual Directory, we made several steps to avoid HTTP 400 Bad Request in Report Manager:
    1. Disable LSA Loopback in Registry and restart server
    2. Enhance Service Startup time to 60000ms and restart Server
    3. Set Application Pool to ASP.NET 2.0 Classic Mode
    4. Modify RSWebApplication.config and set These entries:
    <ReportServerUrl>http://servername/ReportServer</ReportServerUrl>
    <ReportServerVirtualDirectory></ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
After all the Reporting Services Configuration Manager still shows a red sign and we cannot continue creating the database.
How is it possible to solve this?
    We appreciate any help.

    Hi Mark,
As per my understanding, we can refer to the following methods to troubleshooting the issue you occurred.
Install SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3.
Deleting the newly-created virtual directory using IIS manager and then rebooting the server.
In the Report Manager Virtual Directory dialog box, create a virtual directory for Report Manager, then change the Website to Reporting.
    Enable Apply default settings.
The following link is for your reference:

  • Cisco LMS 4.1 Installation on Windows Server 2008 R2, Databases not created

    Hi There,
As always, I am trying to install LMS 4.1 on windows server 2008 R2 and after the installation and login to the LMS I find the following:
DCRServer is down or may not be completely up. Check if the DCRServer process is running.
And after some troubleshooting I found that the LMS is not creating the CMF database and the other databases. Attached is the installation log file, if someone could help me with it would be appreciated. Please note the following:
    1. I have downloaded the installation file from Cisco website twice, so I do not think it is the file that is corrupted, also it is only evaluation license.
    2. I have met all the prerequisites and requirement as in the documentation guides, but maybe there is something still wrong.
    Thanks,

I have installed two virtual machines(win2k3 32bit and win2k3 64bit ) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies (Beta) enterprise. Mouse is getting lost inside VM (using CTRL+ ATL +  LEFT ARROW  comes mouse control control in host OS).
Is there any setting to make mouse works? Insert Integration Serice setup Disk operation succeeds.

     all credits for mike_something
The problem is that the old mousedriver is hooked to the mouse device class.
To remove this dependency, go into the registry and navigate to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Remove the value msvmmouf from the UpperFilters Regvalue.
    Reboot....
    tadaaa!!
If you wish you can take out the drivers completely by deleting these registry hives completely :
    The driver:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\msvmmouf
    The Service:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VPCMap

I'm using a 32-bit version of CF9 and it's installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine (64-bit).  The problem I'm running into is that it won't allow me to create a COM object - it gives me the error, "no ntvinv in java.library.path null" when I try to run,
    <cftry>
    <cfobject type="COM" action="CONNECT" name="Engine" class="JRO.JetEngine">
    <cfcatch type="Any">
        <cfobject type="COM" action="CREATE" name="Engine" class="JRO.JetEngine">
    </cfcatch>
    </cftry>
Then when I run it a 2nd time, I get "An exception occurred when instantiating a COM object. The cause of this exception was that: java.lang.RuntimeException: Can not use native code: Initialisation failed."
    Can you help me?

  • Blue Screen Error during starting Windows Server 2008 R2 (VM on Hyper-v WinSvr2012) Using a Physical to Virtual (P2V) VHDX.

    Hi There,
I'm trying to migrate one of my physical Windows Server 2008 R2 to Virtual Environment (Hyper-V on WinSvr2012).
(The original physical machine had multiple partitions on the windows HDD and 2 other boot able OSs where installed on 2 of those partitions ...) So anyhow,  After heaps of trouble shooting and fixing the boot records, it finally started booting the
Windows but when it got to loading C:\windows\System32\Drivers\Classpnp.sys
and it crashed, a blue screen poped up saying "A Problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer ... ) and then system got rebooted automatically.
I have tried chkdsk, also tried copying a new classpnp.sys to replace the old one but no hope. I don't think is not a damage file issue. Not sure, but it is probably related to changing the HDD devices or SCSI/IDE controllers?
    Any idea?

    1. You have placed your problem in wrong forum. Address your problem to Server forum instead.
    2. I do not think it is liable configuration. I have not heard about migration of multiboot HDD. Try to split it. Pay attention to better preparation. I would expect separate target VM.

  • How to install bo xi 3.1 on windows server 2008 r2 sp1 (virtual machine )

    HI GUYS --
operating system: I am trying to install Business Objects into a virtual  computer which has a windows server 2008 R2 SP1 operating system. I installed version BO XI 3.1 and I also installed Service pack 3 and Service pack 4. I installed liveoffice usual way. Whenever I try to design  xcelsius and dashboard, I got some errors. In order to fix these errors, I followed SAP notes step by step. However, It didnt help me at all. I also tried to install by looking at install guide and supported platform documents, but I get an error each time of doing that. I can write each error over here. I also opened a link over here. Check out the link please to see the errors how to display webi docs. in liveoffice?
    My main question is this.
Are there anybody who works operating system windows server 2008 R2 SP1 and this installed into the virtual machine? If so, Is it worked by doing which installations exactly?
Note; Business Objects tools work very well (infoview, cmc, web intelligencei and the others work  without problems at QAAWS BO XI 3.1, but they have been given cluster error at BO XI 3.1 SP3) . In addition, port server settings have been installed based on the installion guide. If you give me any information other than whatever I said, I appreciate that. I also point out something. If I dont get any message which I attached a sample when I try to operate life office. In this situation I cant see either my documets or web documents in infoview)

    Hi SYaGCi,
Denis is right this is actually documented in the Supported Platforms Documentation:
"Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are new platform support additions in Service Pack 3 which are only available for support on the SP3 full release install of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise. The SP3 patch only release of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise does not provide support for these two new platforms."
    Kind regards,
    John
