Creating a Windows 7 Image using AIK

Hey All
I am currently in a process of trying to create an image in my company that I can deploy on identical machines (Toshiba R830).  I have currently re-installed one laptop from manufacturer’s partition, but I would like to now create an identical image
(WIM file) that I can deploy easily to other identical laptops in case user’s get a virus or whatever the case may be.
In short I wanted to find out if it’s possible to copy all the partitions that the manufacturer has created on the machine into an image, since I do not want to deviate from manufacturer’s process and still want to have their particular set-up replicated
 when I re-image machines.
I have tried to go through the re-imaging process but there is so many tools, ways and things to do before you can create an image that I am just lost in the sea of information provided.
I just want to have an image on the network identical to the current set-up on the host laptop.  I have downloaded AIK for windows 7 and have tried to create bootable USB stick without much success.
My current set-up is:
Windows 7 Professional x64: (Running off the manufacturers Microsoft Windows activation key) According to Microsoft you cannot run an 'answer file' on a single OS license, you need to have a corporate license agreement in place with Microsoft.
I do not have access to Windows OS media as my image was restored from a manufacturer's rescue partition (Out of box Experience) and then I modified the set-up via SysPrep 'System Audit' mode to how I want an image to look like.  According to Microsoft
you are required to have either an ISO or an OS disk to use an 'answer file' for automated deployment.
There are 3 partitions on the machine and I would like to take all 3 of them to the new image (not sure if this is possible).
Furthermore, do I have to set-up every new laptop HD partitions to conform with exact layout partition parameters as an initial image file using the WinPE media (as suggested by Microsoft) or is there an easier way of doing this, short of creating 'answer
file' which  I cant't do due to above reasons?
I am struggling with creating windows PE bootable USB stick, any help on this would be much appreciated.
How can I create unattended installation without use of windows 7 media, corporate license key, etc.  As this will be getting deployed to many users I need this to be unattended.
The tutorials I watched on-line seem to be awfully complicated for creating and deploying simple image that is supposed to save you time not be longer than installing from Windows OS disk.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Slav

Hey Arnav,
Thank you for your prompt response.  Yes, I did go through this but specified method requires a DVD media for Windows 7 (Which we are not using, we are using a manufacturer's restore partition), and an answer file does not automate without Windows corporate
license key according to Microsoft (which we dont have, we are using the manufacturer's keys assigned per device basis).
Additionally, we have 3 partitions on the host image machine (put there by Manufacturer) which we would like to translate to our final image, and there doesn't appear to be any instructions on how to package these partitions into a WIM file for future image
deployments.
Many thanks,
Regards
Slav

My computer recently had a kernel panic, which apparently the corruption was in the system and needed to be erased and re-installed. I have a complete back-up using an external hard drive, and I am definitely not willing to do another one of those to reformat a partition that is already singular. I restarted the computer after ejecting my back-up, and after turning off time machine (thinking that boot camp was recognizing it as a secondary partition), however the error still occurs.
Is there any way to get around this?

map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
/dev/disk1 on /Volumes/Windows7 (udf, local, nodev, nosuid, read-only, noowners)
From my very basic knowledge - it still looks as if there is only one partition (not including the windows 7 CD necessary to install the windows partition).

  • How do you create a disk image using Disk Copy?

    Hello,
Is there any way you can create a disk image using Disc Copy? Is there a better way to create a Disk Image?
I would like to burn two copies of a 4.2 gig folder on my mac. I usually insert a blank DVD-R and then the mac asks if I would like to prepare it at which point I click "yes". An icon of a DVD disk appears on the desktop and then I drag my files onto this icon. It takes a few moments to create the disc image and then I click "burn". However, after the disc is burned the disc image disappears and I have to start all over again if I want to make another copy.
How can I save this disc image? If I could save the disc image, it would enable me to burn a second DVD right after the first without having to create the disk image all over again. This would save a lot if time.
    I am using OS 10.1.5
    Thank you for any suggestions

Thanks Niel for the info about creating a Disk Image with the Disk Copy utility in OS 10.1.5
That worked however when I insert a blank DVD-R, the disk image still has to be copied to the DVD-R buffer and then it can be burned. And so this doesn't really save any steps - the "copying into the buffer" step still has to occur whether or not you have created a disk image of your files. So creating a disk image doesn't really shorten the process of burning multiple copies of a DVD.
I will try to describe the steps more clearly:
Two of the three steps for creating a DVD (steps 2 and 3) are very time-consuming:
    1. put blank DVD into the drive (a DVD disk icon quickly appears)
    2. drag files onto this icon (this step takes a long time as the files are copied into the buffer)
    3. choose "burn" (the actual burning also takes a long time)
I was hoping that when I create two or more DVDs of the same files, I could first create a Disk image so that when I create the second DVD, step 2 could be skipped. That does not seem to be the case - the disk image still has to be re-loaded. And so I think I will not bother with the Disk image idea - it doesn't seem to be necessary or helpful when burning DVDs to backup data.
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • How to create dvd/cd image using super drive in MacBook Air

I have MacBook Air and also Apple Supper drive for the same. can u help me to find dvd/cd burrning and copy software. and also guide me "how to create dvd/cd image using super drive in MacBook Air"

First to create a video DVD you need to use DVD authoring software like iDVD.  You can purchase it from the online Apple Store while supplies last.
For creating a disk image use Disk Utility.
To burn items to a CD or data DVD just insert the disc in the optical drive and drag those items onto the disc icon on the Desktop.  Then drag the disc icon to the Trash icon in the Dock which changes to a Burn icon.

  • How do I create a single image using PSE12 from multiple originals where each original is still separate?

How do I create a single image using PSE12 from multiple originals in which the originals are still separate (i.e. side by side or arranged in a square)? I could do this in PSE2, but can't find how to get PSE12 to do it.
    Grecophile55

In PSE2 there was a single photo-merge. I browsed all my images and I could then click and drag each to its new position before saving. There doesn’t seem to be a similar facility in PSE12.

  • How can I create a NetBoot image using command line tools?

Is it possible to create a NetBoot image entirely using command line tools?
(That is, without using the SystemImageUtility)
If so, are there reasonable instructions posted somewhere?
I don't believe I can use SystemImageUtility with my current setup,
but I would be happy to hear how I could:
I have a set of Xserve clusternodes but without optical drives or video cards.
One node acts as the head, running DHCP, DNS, OpenDirectory, Xgrid.
They are wired to a gigabit switch.
I have a PowerBook connected on the subnet which has ServerAdmin Tools installed.
I don't think when I run SystemImageUtility on my PowerBook that I can successfully image one of the clusternodes disks over the network.
I have tried to start one node in target(Firewire) mode, connect it via Firewire
to the head node, and run hdiutil from the head node to make a complete disk image of the clusternode's drive.
But a NetBoot image requires the whole nbi file, right?
Could I then use copy this disk image to my PowerBook and use SystemImageUtility on my PowerBook to create a NetBoot image from it?
I really have tried to read the PDFs, but I found the section on System Imaging in the Command Line Reference rather unhelpful.
    Thanks for anyones help.

      Mac OS X (10.4.4)

To create a NetBoot image, you could just put the cluster node in target mode and attach it to your PowerBook. Then use SIU to create the NetBoot image.
If you're trying to create a backup image of the disk, use hdiutil, or put in in target mode and create the image with Disk Utility.

  • When I create a windows partition using bootcamp will it reformat my entire harddrive?

Basically I'm wondering if I should install windows on my macbook pro, or not install windows on my macbook pro. Main concern is listed in the header.

    It is not *supposed* to.
But make a bootabe clone (CarbonCopyClone or SupderDuper) before, just in case, on a self-powered external disk that is 2x the internal drive.
CarbonCopyClone makes a base-image backup fist, then copies only changes for each next backup.  Free download.
SuperDuper makes a complete clone each time for the free download, or an incrmental like CCC if you pay $30.
Bootable clones can boot using the "option" key at startup if something goes wrong and then re-clone back to internal.

  • How do you create a disk image of windows so u can increase partition size?

Ok, I have installed windows on my mac using bootcamp so i can play pc games and such. I mainly use the mac side of the computer but I have 30 GB devoted to windows. I ran out of space though and now want to uninstall windows so i can make the windows partition bigger. The problem is that I don't want to have to install ALL of my programs over again once i reinstall windows so I want to take a disk image of windows which i can revert to once it is reinstalled. I tried using the disk utility to do it but it keeps giving me error messages. Does anyone know how do create a disk image using windows??? or maybe I'm doing something wrong with the disk utility??? HELP!

The easiest way I have found to do this is to backup the windows partition with a program such as WinClone
    http://twocanoes.com/winclone/
Then use the bootcamp assistant to erase and recreate the partition, finally restoring the backup to the new partition. I have done this several times with my mac and it works great.

  • Error in creating an HDR image in photoshop using light room. Help please.

Hi so I am trying to create an HDR image using the latest version of photoshop and light room.
Just finished doing all the steps needed before I select my images and click (edit in > merge to HDR pro in photoshop ) it opens Photoshop and gives me an error saying "Merge To HDR.jsx could not be found." and my files don't open. what does this mean and how do I fix it?

difficult to reproduce. But it might be a data conversion problem.
    e.g. try
to_char(a.num_tabs)If that's not the error comment out certain lines or xmltags and test which one is the reason for the error.

  • Unable to create a recovery image

    Hello,
I've just bought an HP Pavillion x2, it has a 64 GB SSD.  I want to create a recovery image using the HP utility but when I try to it fails. I think it is because there isn't enough space on the Windows partition in order to create the image.  I have a USB drive plugged in with 27GB free but it seems like it's creating the image on the C drive before it copies to the USB drive. I don't want to delete my recovery partition until I know I've got another copy and I can't find anything else to uninstall to get the 14 GB i need (have 12 GB free). I've only had the tablet a few days so haven't got much on here, have uninstalled everything I've put on here except for the Windows updates I did. I've cleared the temp file wimy user profile.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?
    Thanks
    Juliet
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I did go through the Windows routine of creating a recovery image but it was slightly vague as to whether it would be suitable. Anyway I eventually restored the machine to factory defaults, created the recovery image straight away and it worked fine, then after installing Win 8.1 I ended up with loads more free space anyway.

  • Tutorial:  Creating, saving and re-using Custom Shapes

I've beeen experimenting with custom shapes for the last couple of days, and thought I'd share some of the tips and techniques I found.
First of all, what are custom shapes?
Well, they're vector objects.  That means that they are not built out of millions of individual pixels (like images are), but rather they're a series of mathematical statements that describe how to draw a line from point to point to create the vector shape.  This means that custom shapes are "resolution independent", and that they can be grossly shrunk or enlarged and still retain razor sharp edges, curves and corners.
What are custom shapes good for?
Pretty much anything where you want to use a good, sharp object.  In particular, using a custom shape as a clipping mask for an image that's been placed as a Smart Object is an outstanding technique, and really shows off the power that PSE is capable of.
PSE comes with a lot of ready-to-use custom shapes for its Custom Shape tool, and there are probably hundreds of thousands available on the Web -- just search for "photoshop shapes".  Typically, those shapes will be supplied as Adobe CSH (Custom SHape) files, and simply copying the CSH files into the
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\Presets\Custom Shapes"
directory will make them available for use with the Custom Shape tool.
Sooner or later, though, you'll get the itch to create your own custom shapes.  Out of the box, PSE does not have the capability to let you create custom shapes and add them to the CSH files like the "big" Photoshop does, so we'll need to use a workaround:  store your custom shapes as layers in a PSD file, and when you want to use them simply copy them into your image.
N.B.:  To create custom shapes you'll have to use the reasonably priced Elements+ add-in:
    http://elementsplus.net/
So, the procedure goes like this:
Create a new image, using the PSE defaults, and save it as "CustomShapes01.psd", keeping it open.
Open an image containing an object that you want to use as a custom shape.
Use any of the selection tools to make an accurate selection of the object:
In the Effects panel, use the Elements+...Paths effect and choose the Create New Path...From Current Selection:
Use the Elements+...Paths again, choosing "Convert to Shape", giving it a name and colour of your choosing.  This will create a Shape Layer using that name.
Important:  If your shape has "holes",
use the Shape Selection tool and click on the shape to select it.  Then hit the "Combine" button in the Options Bar.  This will combine all the individual shapes used to create the shape and its "holes" into one shape, and prevent beaucoup problems later.
Switch to the Move tool and drag the shape onto the tab of your "CustomShapes01.psd" image, keeping your mouse button pressed.  That image will become activated and you can move your cursor onto the image itself and drop your shape onto it.  Your PSD file will now have your custom shape as a shape layer:
    Save that "CustomShapes01.psd" file.
You can repeat the process for as many custom shapes as you want, and they will each become a layer in the "CustomShapes01.psd" file.
To use your custom shape, open the "CustomShapes01.psd" file and your target image and do the drag and drop with the Move tool to copy the custom shape onto your target image.
I mentioned that using a custom shape as a clipping mask for an image placed as a Smart Object is a very powerful technique.  It's powerful because the custom shape can be altered at any time and still keep its sharpness, and because the Smart Object can also be resized without becoming pixellated.  Of course, that custom shape layer can have any number of layer styles applied to it and those layer styles will "follow" the shape if the shape is moved, resized or rotated.
Here are three examples of using the custom shapes as clipping masks for Smart Objects:
In this example, each custom shape is used as a clipping mask for an image Smart Object, as usual:
Here, one custom shape was used as a clipping mask for an image Smart Object and they were linked.
Then the shape and image were duplicated and moved, rotated and resized.  Because of the linking, the Smart Object automatically kept its orientation and size relative to the custom shape throughout:
If you want to use custom shapes as a "combined" clipping mask, the procedure is a little more complicated because you need to get all your custom shapes on one shape layer.
So, after copying your shapes into the target image (as separate shape layers), use the Shape Selection tool to select one of the shapes.  Using Edit...Cut will cut that shape layer to the Clipboard, and you can select one of the other shape layers and use Edit...Paste to paste the custom shape into that shape layer.  Repeat as necessary, and you will get all of your custom shapes on one shape layer.  Then use that single shape layer as your clipping mask:
The neat thing is that the individual shapes can be selected with the Shape Selection tool and independently moved, resized or rotated as necessary.
    Enjoy!
    Ken

    Thanks, Michel.
I forgot to mention one point about copying shape layers into one shape layer:  when you initially use the Shape Selection tool to select a shape for cutting, make sure the option for the Shape Selection tool is set to "Add to Selection".
