Creating "Aliases" etc on the Desktop

Hi All.
Can anyone give me the lowdown (or point me to info) on how to create "shortcuts" or "aliases" for items like iDisk, folders etc, etc on my desktop, sidebar, dock etc.
I want to make sure I understand all the ways I can leave myself "breadcrumb" trails to get there from here.
Thanks,
Jonathan

You can create an alias to any file or volume - for example I initiated file sharing to the Home Folder on another computer, and once mounted I created an alias of it. On subsequent occasions double-clicking the alias will mount the remote folder. You can do the same with your iDisk.
There's little point in putting an alias to an external hard disk on the Desktop, since you can mount the disk there, but you can perfectly well do it, and indeed put the alias anywhere convenient. If the disk has been unmounted you can use the alias to remount it - provided, obviously, that it is connected.

The section directly above is what I need to add, anyone have a clue how to make this work?

Bill:  Can you suggest a site?  I am in the weeds here trying to get this done yesterday.  I have been reading code and trying to figure this out since yesterday morning.  I have to roll out this image to 2 dozen machines and
this is holding us back.  Any idea which site I can post to for help?
The bigger issue is that you have been given the answer to this in many different forms and, because you have no technical background, you fail to see what is being shown to you.  That is why I have repeatedly suggested that you hire a consultant.
The link to the learning material is at the top o this page.  You can also search the web for Windows consultants.
In the learning link you can also look up how to manage files. If, in the beginning you had chosen to use the learning materials you might not be in this bind.
Look up and research the FileSystemObject.

Make absolutely certain that FireFox is designated as your default browser.
Do this: Tools / Options / Advanced / Check Now / correct the setting
OR right click on any shortcut icon / Open With / Choose Default Program / select desired Browser / check Always... box / OK

Can the Oracle software packager handle all these. Please Let me know ASAP.
    Thanks a bunch.

    Agata,
The full retail should be white with a snow leopard on it but if you ordered from the on-line store you should be fine.  If it is having problems booting while holding the C key, try restarting the computer but this time hold the Option key.
That will bring up a grey screen with the image of the Macintosh HD and an image of the CD.  Click the image of the CD and let it boot that way.
Once booted, go through the install proceedure, choose language, etc.  Still using the same CD but let's see if for some reason it does not like the way it is being told to boot.

  • ITunes doesn't see new iPod nano and creates 'iPod' folders on the Desktop

My mom got a new 5th Gen Nano. When it is connected to my parents' iMac (G5 with built in iSight running Leopard), iTunes doesn't see it. The strange thing is that the iPod itself goes through the normal synching procedures about every 30 seconds, and every time it happens, it creates a new 'iPod' folder on the desktop. The really strange thing is that each folder is actually a mounted volume that cannot be ejected and the only way to remove them is to reboot the system. Right now, there are 11 of those folders on the desktop (I am connected via screen sharing in iChat.
Any idea what to do about this one?
    jorj

So, I found out how to fix this issue. In "My Computer" right click on the iPod and format it. I chose to format it using FAT and Default allocation size. After that, I opened iTunes and it recognized my iPod Shuffle. It said it wasn't formatted properly but gave me the option to restore it to factory defaults which fixed everything. Way to go Self. Thank you. You're Welcome

  • Unattend.xml - 'creating' a file on the desktop

I'm trying to create a very simple file on the desktop through unattend.xml.  This file will only open IE to a particular webpage.  For some reason it's being totally ignored.  I have verified that this works when run at a command prompt.
This is running under oobeSystem pass under the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component.
    <FirstLogonCommands>
          <SynchronousCommand wcm:action="add">
            <CommandLine>CMD /C echo "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "servername/page" > "%userprofile%\Desktop\Deploy.bat"</CommandLine>

    <RequiresUserInput>false</RequiresUserInput>
            <Order>1</Order>
          </SynchronousCommand>
        </FirstLogonCommands>
I've banged around with the command, tried dropping it in Public, some other things, but it just gets ignored regardless.  The rest of the oobeSystem pass is processed with no issues.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

  • How do I CREATE A SHORTCUT ON THE DESKTOP?

New to the Apple family. Always have been a PC person. Just got fed up..  Would like to find out how to cut and paste with the mouse and also my main question is not knowing how to set up a shortcut on the Desktop for faster internet access to certain specified sites.... Hi there
This post may be under the wrong section, if you are a new Mac user, then you most likely have an Intel based Mac, not a PPC. And also, you may want to not write IN CAPS as it usually indicates yelling in a forum environment
    1. You cannot Cut & Paste on a Mac, you may Copy & Paste, if you want to Cut & Paste (CMD + X) you can download MoveAddict from the Mac App Store.
    2. EDIT: Sorry, I thought you meant Application shortcut - do what he said \/ \/ \/
    Hope that helps

  • I have Firefox installed on both desktop and laptop. Firefox is NOT recognizing my settings (to open with previous tabs, etc) on the desktop only. How do I fix this.

I have opened/closed browser numerous times, after "updating" and resetting my preferences. The settings "match" on laptop and desktop. Laptop works like a charm; desktop not at all.

Since you have encountered the problem at other sites, not just Firefox, I'd bet that it is an Internet Explorer problem, not the web sites. Actually, I am sure it is an IE problem.
Try running Windows Update, perhaps there are some updates for Internet Explorer that might resolve the problem. If you don't know how to run Windows Update, use the Help on your system to look for information on Windows Update.
If that does not help, use Google to search for information on IE9 locking up when downloading.

  • How to change the icon for a shortcut on the desktop

I created a shortcut on the Desktop (dragging a safari url-icon to the desktop) but the icon showing is a safari icon.
The website has a specific icon, as displayed as the first item (icon) on the url bar in front of the website-URL.
I located the specific icon on the website (favicon.ico), opened it and copied the icon (copy paste).
Then I opened the properties screen for my shortcut (at the Desktop) (control click on link) .
Now I am supposed to copy the new icon (from my Clipboard)  into the properties of the Desktop URL, but how do I do that?

You can change the favicon for a folder but not  a specific Safari url.
Click a clear space on your desktop then go to the Finder menu and click File > New Folder
Move Safari url shortcuts to that folder.
Then copy and paste the icon for the folder.

  • Cannot click items on the desktop

    Hello,
I've had an issue where I sometimes, just seemingly randomly, I cannot click folders, items, etc on the desktop. The click just will not register anything. I have some folder, files, and the "Macintosh HD" on my desktop and I cannot click anything. I have to force restart finder and then it will work again. The first time, I thought it was a fluke, but it has happened several times now and I don't know what's wrong.
On a related note, sometimes when saving files from Entourage to desktop, nothing will show on the desktop. It will just not show up. I can find it when looking in the ACTUAL desktop folder, but not on the desktop itself.
Has anyone experienced this before? Anything I can do? The desktop issue seems knew to .6, but the saving to desktop has happened since .4. Thanks!

I had the same issue today and while it was happening, I spent some time trying to figure out why this was occurring. It was a weird end to the reasoning behind it, which is prob. why most people had never experienced something like this.
First, the two issues of not being able to click the desktop and not seeing items saved to desktop from Entourage ended up being completely related.
As soon as the problem occurred, I immediately went to clicking around the desktop and noticed nothing worked. I clicked on Macintosh HD, Folders on my desktop, files, etc and nothing would work. Also, a few minutes prior, saving to desktop from Entourage did not work. It would not show up on desktop, but would show up when I looked at the files in the folder. I knew restarting Finder would make it work again, but I wanted to know why. I went ahead and remembered that I had an issue with my monitor after every restart where I would see screens double. To make it go away, I have to go into Monitor settings, change from 60hz refresh to 75, then back again. For some reason, I started leaving it at 75, so going back and forth 2 times total. I opened the Monitor settings and changed the refresh rate to 60. All of a sudden, the files that were not showing up, DID show up, and I was instantly able to click on all of my icons on the desktop and files. Weird, I know.
All I can say regarding this is that I was not able to click anything on the desktop, I couldn't save items to desktop from Entourage, until I changed the refresh rate. Files that were "not on" the desktop, suddenly were, after the blue screen came and went after changing refresh rates.
Anyway, that's my experience and I'm thankful I do not have this problem anymore.

  • Keeping the desktop clean

i have on two occasions, installed two applications such that after install, their icons remain on the desktop. like VLC for instance, if i try to move the icon to trash, it says it is being used by VLC.
in the Windows world, one can control where applications are installed and their install files such that they don't unnecessarily clutter places where you don't want them. how does one do the same in OS X?

that's another. i  want things done from a certain folder. not the desktop by default.
i have let the OS use the default downloads folder and i ran the installers from there. however, some apps like vlc would put some junk on the desktop. doesn't even ask me where to uncompressed.
in Windows, i have the Download folder and do my downloads there and installations/uncompressing. yes the apps would create a shortcut on the desktop but the apps would ask permission first. if they don't, i simply delete the shortcut. in OS X, i'm not sure why the "shortcut" created on the desktop has something to do with the running vlc app. i don't see the point.

  • Lost control of desktop, and the hard drive is creating aliases on it's own

I am unable to save to my desktop, or move the one remaining (hard drive) icon around on my desktop. I have double checked the organization settings, and there are set to none. I have run the user permissions repair via disc utilities, and cleared the PRAM with no change. In addition to my desktop issue, around 20 aliases of my hard drive are being created on their own. any ideas??

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Creating a network icon on the desktop?

    Hi
I currently have the HD and idisk icons on my desktop but I need to get the network icon on there as well, so I can double click on it instead of having to click on go, then network.
Any ideas how I do this?
    Thanks

    Mount the networked volume.
Navigate to the network folder (Command-Shift-K)
Create an alias. This can be done several ways. But since you want to put the alias on your desktop, the easiest way is to
Command-Option-Drag the icon to the desktop
The Command-Opton-Drag will create an alias. Or you can use Finder -> File -> Make Alias, or you can select the mounted volume and use Command-L
Now when you double click on that alias, it will mount the networked volume.
You may store that alias anywhere you like, on the Dock, on your Desktop, in a folder of common aliases, and put that folder on the Dock, etc...
If you always want that volume mounted when you login, you can also open System Preferences -> Accounts -> Startup Items, then drag the mounted network volume into your Startup Items and when you login, it will be mounted.

  • Can Safari or Firefox be aliased to the Desktop?

I would like to Alias my browser so that when I shut down and restart the browser is on the Desktop, and when opened will open to the particular website I shut it down with?
Is there a way to do this? I know that any page can be saved as text or html, but that is not what I want to do.
    Thanks

    John,
I found a small glitch with this procedure of using the URL and it only seemed to apply to Firefox, which is what I normally use. The first time, I created a few aliases of websites in Firefox, and then quit Firefox. When I tried to reopen Firefox in this same session, it sent an error message that effectively told me that the information that it is holding in its preference file tells it that the program was already being used by someone else. It then asked me to create another user (presently it is "default"). I did not do it. This remained the situation until either 1) I closed out all of the aliases I had created during that session, or 2) I kept the aliases and restarted the computer at which time the aliases were still on the desktop and I had no problem opening a Firefox window. Strangly, this did not happen in Safari. Safari did not see any problem and would reopen without any problem.
I then closed out everything and restarted the computer and performed the same alias creation of several websites. This time Firefox worked fine, meaning that after quiting Firefox in the same session, I could reopen it without any problem and no error messages.
I don't know what this means. Perhaps it had to reset itself to recognize that "default" could do this procedure. Right now everything works fine.
I will look into this further. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks
    Herschel
