Creating an A5 brochure in Illustrator CS5.1

Hi,
I have been trying for hours to create an A5 Brochure in Illustrator (I have version CS5.1)
I have looked at tutorials and help guides, a lot of them say select 'A5' in the new document option, but there ISN'T an A5 option! :-(
Please help!
Kind regards
Sarah-Jane

Not at all. Assuming you are talking about a one page folded brochure: Take a sheet of paper and fold it the way the brochure will be folded (bi-fold, tri-fold, or whatever). Hold it so you are looking at the "cover", and number that section 1. Continue to number each section as you unfold it. Then lay the paper flat to see the arrangement.
Folding it will also let you know if you need to allow a little extra on one side as opposed to the other (common for tri-fold brochures).

  • PDF created in Illustrator CS5 causing problems in InDesign CS5

I have created a wallpaper / background in Illustrator CS5 that measures 646mm x 303mm (it's for an A4 folder cover) is in CMYK colour mode and is made up of only 2 layers.  Layer 1 is 3 rectangles - 1 the size of the page and 2 that are 50% of the full page.  They are all filled in with a gradient.  Layer 2 is 2 x waves made up os 2 lines then "Object", "Blend", "Specified Steps - 20", "Make".  This is the extent of the graphics on this page.  I have then saved it as a PDF (Illustrator Default) and it's size is 518k - pretty reasonable size.
Here's my problem -  When I place the PDF in InDesign as the background for my folder it is slowing all my processes down is I put my view to "High Quality".  I can move, resize, type or place anything without the program crashing or a monumental delay in whatever it is that I am trying to do.  Printing is also taking an excessive amount of time when I try to print off the PDF (created from the InDesign file and being all of 1.2MB).
Also - the illustrator document has now crashed once.
Other things that might be useful to know is that I am running on Windows XP, Office 2010, 32 bit, and have the whole CS5 package.
I can't think of any other information to give.
Do you think there is a system problem?  File issue?  Any advice would be FANTASTIC.
    Thank you!!!!!

That's an issue with the shared PDF stuff in newer versions of Acrobat. There's realy no fix for this misbehavior, it's more or less a "hard" compatibility issue.

  • Color variations from Adobe Illustrator CS5 to Acrobat 9 (PDF)

I'm a new designer who is trying to solve issues of color variations when I create a PDF file from Illustrator CS5. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to ensure that the colors match from application to application? Do I need to select certain settings for RGB, CYMK, or other color libraries (i.e., Pantone)? Thanks for the help!

If you are creating your PDF using Save As > PDF or Print > PDF; your selections in Illustrator's Color Settings should go with the file.  However, it could also be the settings you choose when you create the PDF.  I use Distiller where I can use the same settings from Illustrator and have them embedded in the PDF when distilled.  The key being that settings match when you create the PDF.

  • Acrobat presets in Illustrator CS5 causing issues

When I created my PDF presets in Illustrator CS5.5., they were working fine until recently. I have files that I save as PDF's in Illustrator CS5.5.1 and either place the files in our templates in Illustrator, or a simple step and repaet of one vector art Ill. file 2 up. The issue is when I view the files in Acrobat X and the files are shifted or the second image of the step file won't show up. If I go back into the master files and do another save as for PDF it shows the CUSTOM setting at the top not my preset, so I select the preset (i made) again and it will work. Is this an Acrobat issue or an Illustrator issue? I reinstalled Illustrator, and deleted my old PDF settings and made new ones and that seemed to help for about 4 hours, and now I'm back to the same issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I create or export a logo in Illustrator CS5 with an alpha channel to use in Final Cut Pro 6?

    To anyone who can help:
I have created a logo using Illustrator CS5 and need to import it into a video sequence in Final Cut Pro 6.  The logo has a transparent background.  It seems FCP 6 will import both native .ai files as well as .tiff files, but when I open them in FCP 6, the alpha channel (transparent background) is no longer there; there is just the logo over a white background.  Is there a setting or step I am missing?
    Shaun MacLellan

I have to insert AI images into Final Cut Pro and Motion quite frequently.
The most effective way I've found to get an AI image into Final Cut is to:
    1. Select/copy all the objects in the AI doc.
    2. Create a new file with a transparent background in Photoshop and paste.
    3. Merge the layers and make sure the mode is RGB.
    4. Save out as a .PNG or .PSD.
    5. Drag the result into Final Cut (or Motion).
    6. Resize and position the result to taste.
Attempting to export directly from AI to .PSD or .PNG is a wasted effort  and the results may not even be recognized by Final Cut.
Yes, it requires Photoshop and it is a few extra steps...but it works like a charm.
Additionally, when creating a new file in Photoshop, you may want to initially set its size to match the aspect ratio of your video. For example, if you're making an HD video, you might set the size to 1280x720 and position the AI elements where they are supposed to be in frame. You can set the AI elements in accurately by cutting and pasting a frame from your video into Photoshop and positioning the AI elements in place on another layer above the video layer. Delete the video layer before saving out as a .PNG or .PSD and it will appear in Final Cut exactly where it should be.

  • Font issue occurs when creating pdf file from Illustrator CS5.

I have some design files which are created in Illustrator CS5 and I made them as a pdf file using InDesign CS5 while I open the pdf file in Acrobat Pro 9  I have no issue with the file but my client is using Acrobat Pro 7 while they open the pdf file in Acrobat pro 7 junk characters(rectangular boxes) are appearing in it. Can anyone please look in to this and confirm is this a version bug or something else? It would be much appreciated if some give any idea to get rid of this issue.

Aside from the PDF version, but to follow-up to what David is getting at, you are likelythe fonts are not embedding. Because they reside on your system you see the PDF as it should be. Your client likely does not have the fonts installed.
Make sure your ID export of the document is including the fonts. If that still does not work, check to make certain the fonts you are using allow them to be embedded.
If all else fails, seeing how this PDF is for client review (I assume) have the PDF settings set to convert type to outlines. This gets you past the current dilemma as you figure out the cause.
    Take care, Mike

  • Re: Illustrator CS5.5 - Will edit but cannot save .ai files created in CS3

Hi!  I recently installed Illustrator CS5.5 over CS3 (as part of a CS5.5 CS upgrade). I did not uninstall CS3, as I still sometimes need to use it with collegues who have not upgraded.  I am on a PC with Windows 7 (64 bit).
Today I opened an .ai file I had created in CS3 about 6 months ago, edited it and attempted to save it as a CS5 .ai file.  It would not alow this, popping up a message saying "Can't save the illustration!".
So, I attempted to save it as a CS3 .ai file, and recieved another error message.  In teh end, I just had to close down Illustartor and lose my work.  I will re-do it in CS3.
Anyone got any idea what the problem might be?
    Help!
    Cheers
    Angus

    Thanks for the response.
No mysteries here…… I just have a common or garden single home PC installation of Windows 7 (64 bit) and the file I was trying to use in CS5.5 is simply a series of charts (graphs) – each in a separate layer - that are then placed in a report.  File is 454 kb.

  • Can't create new files in Illustrator CS5

We have a couple of custom New Document Profiles as well as the standard ones for Illustrator. When I launch the Illustrator it opens fine. I can create a single new file and if I keep that file open and create more new files after it they open fine as well, but if I close the files and then try to create another new file nothing happens. It doesn't matter which profile I use. If I shut down and restart Illustrator I can create a new file again.
I checked permissions on the ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS5.1/en_US/New Document Profiles folder and I have read/write to it and all contents.
Any suggestions on why this might be happening and what to do to resolve the issue?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Ok, think I figured this one out. We had the option under Type Preferences to Show Font Names in English selected. Apparently this causes some kind of conflict. I realized after posting above, that something was happening when we were changing our preferences to cause this. So I went through each preference panel, made my changes and quit then restarted Illustrator until I got to the one that brought the problem back. I could reproduce the error by turning this option on and eliminate it by turning it off. So I'm going to assume that is the cause. If I find out any different down the road I'll post back, but for now I'm considering it mystery solved.

  • What is the best way to create tables in Illustrator cs5

    Hello everyone,
I am currently working on making a project board for a printer. It needs to have rows and colums so that a project can be tracked and assigned on a day by day basis. I figured I would just creat a table for this. Is there a good way to create tables in Illustrator cs5?

    1. Copy Excel table and paste in illustrator  and Clipping Mask ->  Release
    2. Ungroup!  Group or may not be released, so please ungroup twice.
    3. Excute javascript.
    * Document mode must be CMYK.
    * All Layer On & Unlock!
    * Excel table as shown above the line must be black in color.

  • Illustrator CS5 - lag when opening/creating files

I know this must be a weird question, but when I create or open a file in illustrator CS5(or Photoshop CS5) I notice there is a 4-5 second "delay" before Illustrator allows me to work on the document I just opened/created( the artboard comes up, I can move the cursor, but I can't select tools, draw, etc.). I had been working with CS3 previously, and noticed no such issue.
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 with 5GB of ram.
    Thanks.

By any chance, do you have Font Agent Pro and the FAP Plugins installed on your system? I ran into a thread in the PS forum and a few of us have noticed that the issue is resolved when the FAP plugins are removed from the plugins folder.

    Hello,
I have opened artwork created by someone else. We are both using Illustrator CC. This particular issue shows up in Illustrator CS5 also. Issue: in the links pallet a weird gray gradient keeps replicating. I cannot identify it in the artwork. It is an embedded image. I cannot get rid of it and it keeps reproducing. WHAT is it and why can't I delete it?
    Thanks for any help. Ingrid

Hello, yes it is reproducing over and over. I look in the original artwork and there are 28. I did not save over the original art but “save as”. Worked on the new file for a while and now there are 47!. I copied all the content to a new blank, all colors removed, file and there they were. If I click on them can’t relink, won’t show a bounding box, no frame in wire-frame, no stray points. they are ghosts. Here is an image, to give a better visual of how they look in links panel. Any ideas? Thanks, Ingrid

  • Can you remove XMP data from .eps files in Illustrator-CS5.5?

    Background:
I'm using font software called Typetool 3 and Illustrator CS5.5.
I am using these on Windows 7, 64 bit.
This is entry level font software released by Fontlab.
This software accepts artwork through the .eps file format in both theory and practice.
However: it refuses illustrator CS5.5 .eps files.
When I looked at this I came up with two highly interesting things: First- CS5.5 illustrator files are roughly 13 times the size of CS5 files, of this type (a simple font glyph-comparing a 29-30 kbfile to a 420-450 kb file in cs5 and cs5.5 respectively).
Thing two came from looking at what that data was (by opening it in a text editor). It appears that some of the data XMP data, illustrators data for tracking things like who created the file, copyright, and other. In document info many of these fields were blank. I'm sure this isn't the only issue because my exported xmp data is 64 kb large, but it does account for a chunk of the file.
The main question being: Can this xmp data; which for my purposes is redundant, because I have to put copyright and other data in the font, be removed or not included at the point of document creation?
The technical question being:Can the file be saved in a manner which will allow it to be exported from adobe CS5.5 and imported into Typetool 3?
    Things I've tried:
In saving .eps file: removing document headers, previews, color data, saving as different versions of the language. Basically saving it without all settings.
In saving .ai file: saving without any settings checked (without compression, pdf editting, ect.) and saving it to a different level of illustrator.
I do not know enough about postscript programming to navigate the file or remove the offending data. Nor do I have time to do this over multiple glyphs.
As a matter of opinion I do not like that my software is including potentially identifying information (which is one of the intents of XMP data, to provide identification) without notifying the creator, let alone allowing me to keep it from doing that. I would not mind or bother-except for the fact its messed up an established workflow. If someone editted this data without my knowledge, say with a virus or heaven forbid manually, it would be also be bothersome. Having a check that identifies that I am sending this data out would give me something to know if this situation was in fact happening. Additionally for a situation like mine-communication between programs in a closed environment where no other users are involved, its unnecessary and wasteful... like putting gold rims on what is intended to be an oxcart.
I'm planning on going to Fontlab for later this week, as it is as much thier issue as it is Adobe's. From what I know XMP is both a useful and popular technology- having a workaround for this situation seems like it would be a good idea. If necessary I can attach some working files for comparision.

I would save it as EPS (version Illustrator 3). This should be compatible to almost any  software that takes EPS.
