Creating an archive

I want to create an archive of my master images. I am working off of a managed master library, where that library is kept on an external drive. I have created a vault of my master library, so I am backed up there. I would like my master images archived outside of Aperture though, and I would like to be able to use that as an alternate backup. I do not want to export my images, because I do not want to compress the images any further by exporting as JPEG's. I know that I could export as TIFF's, but I really don't want to take up that much room on my hard drive.
As a second strategy, could I relocate my master images to create a referenced library and then just copy those images to another disk? I am assuming that by relocating the images, I am not exporting them, so the typical export presets won't have an effect and I will not be compressing the images, but simply relocating the masters. I could then either choose the keep the referenced library, or consolidate those images back into the Aperture library to get back to a managed master library.
For anyone reading this post with knowledge of what I am talking about, does this make any sense and sound like a viable strategy? I plan to backup all of my images upon import as well as keep the masters in my managed library going forward, so I will not run into the issue of ever having to export in order to keep a true archive of untouched masters.
Thanks for reading and responding.

I don't want to convert to a Referenced Masters library for good, just until I can make a copy of my images for archival purposes. Once that is done, I would convert it back to a Managed Masters library. Once that is done, I would use the Backup on import feature, so that I could simultaneously back up the files while importing them into my Managed library.
I would of course export the Master images, and not the versions to create the archive, but even exporting the Masters requires that you export them at a certain setting. Aside from TIff, or one of the other file types that doesn't add compression, I am left with JPEG, original size and choosing a DPI setting (perhaps 240 to 300). Any way that I cut it, the images will be exported as JPEG's and it is my understanding that this will cause further compression. Besides, I have a lot of RAW images, and I do not want to export those for archival purposes as JPEG's. I would like to keep the RAW version intact for my archive should I ever want/need to import them again in the future.
Am I missing something here with the export feature that you guys are talking about? Even if I export the Masters, they will still export as JPEG's (even if I choose original size...). Again, I'm looking for the file, as if it were first coming off of my camera.

  • How do I create an archive system for a blog created with a custom app?

I had to create a blog using a custom app, because I needed an image to show up in the list view (a feature I can't believe does not exist in the blog module). Anyways, I am wondering how can I create an archive system? Do I need to create categories for each month/year and then classify the post each time we create one. Then manually create links each month to pages that filters listing by that category? This is the system I tried, but I was wondering if there was a better way.
Also, I would like to have a sidebar that shows all the authors/contributors of the blogs and have a count under their photo that shows how many blogs they have contributed to, and have this update dynamically each time they create a new post. I was wondering if a data source tag is the way to do this but I don't have enough information on how the data source tag even works, to really know how to do this.
I have searched google for hours, and even signed up for BC gurus tutorials with no real luck. I thought BC gurus was going to have the answer but it wasn't quite detailed enough. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You can use classifications but there is no auto feature to archive like that on web apps.
In terms of the blog, Like I have said to everyone that has posted about blog preview images:
    http://www.prettypollution.com.au/business-catalyst-blog
Just one example of an image at the start of the blog post rendering out, not hard at all.

  • FTP Adaptert - Junk Filename is created in archive folder

    Hi All,
Junk filename is getting created in archive directory.
I have one ftp adapter, after the file is getting processed the file's are getting moved to archive directory.
But with some different Junk file name suffiffed with timestamp/ filename are randomly generated. But the content of the file remains the same.
Pls suggest me as to how to retain the same file name while archiving.
    Thanks & Regards
    Nithya

Are you on 10.1.3.3, there is a bug 6414848 which encrypts the file name. There is a stand alone patch of the same name (6414848)
It is also part of 10.1.3.4, or any MLR patch greater than MLR#6 for 10.1.3.3
Depending on your project I would recommend upgrading to 10.1.3.4 and apply the latest MLR patch MLR#6 (8279781) if you apply the MLR patch make sure you apply the one off patch 8416391 as well as there is a know issue around memory.
If this is not possible I would apply the latest 10.1.3.3 MLR patch MLR#17 (7375080) if you apply the MLR patch make sure you apply the one off patch 8416391 as well as there is a know issue around memory.
If this in not possible then just apply the one off patch 6414848
    cheers

  • Workbench is too slow and creating an archive in Workbench takes an eternity

Creating an archive in Workbench is taking too long.
Creating an archive for 1 four page document is taking 15 minutes and 15 seconds to prepare then another 9 minutes to create the 150K archive file.
We are experiencing this constantly and we need to figure out why. Are there configuration settings that can be made to correct this situation. We are running workbench in Citrix. Are there known issues about running workbench in Citrix.

How big is your 4-page document source file?
I had an issue recently where one of my .process files grew to 34MB. There was a bug where it just kept inserting blank lines into one of the xml tags every time I saved it. But because it was constant, it compressed down in the archive quite well.
Rename the .LCA file to .ZIP, open it and see how big the files are in there. If there is one huge file, you might want to try copying the offending file to a new file in Workbench, delete the old one and see if that reduces the size.

  • Creating photo archive/catalog

Using iPhoto 08 on a grant-funded Mac Book Pro to create an archive/catalog of historic photos for a garden conservancy. Probable outputs: to Power Point for presentations and website for display.
    1) How to export "Description" data from iPhoto along with the image, title, and keywords?
    2) Is there more appropriate Mac-compatible software than iPhoto to create archive/catalog records of photos and export the data and images?

Both iPhoto and Aperture are aimed squarely at Photographers rather than Librarians. The features are designed to help the photographer process the output from a shoot to a usable format, and the databasing is aimed at making photographs easily found. From your description the entire Photographers end is wasted for you. It’s the DB that’s of interest.
    To your specific questions:
--The sidebar data input area displays in very small font size, which makes it difficult to enter and edit data efficiently. Is there a way to increase (to full-screen size?) both the image and data entry areas when working on an image
Just like any app on your Mac, you can drag the bottom right hand corner to make the app full screen. No, there is no way to increase the size of the display font.
As imported, the jpeg file number appears in the Title area. I would like to change the Title to a descriptive one; e.g., "Longthorpe Garden, front entrance," for future display purposes. To preserve the jpeg file number, I've been moving it into the Description area, following general notes about the image. In iPhoto is there a better place to put the jpeg file number? Could that field be sorted upon? Can additional fields (e.g., File Number) be added to the iPhoto file manager structure to customize it? Could that field be sorted upon?
There’s no need to move the JPEG file number. That’s the *File Name*. It remains the File Name even though you add a title to the photo. You can search - either in the Search box at the bottom of the Window, or by using a Smart Album (File -> New Smart Album) on either the File Name or Title. The sorting options are in the View -> Sort Photos menu. You have more sorting options on more metadata in Aperture.
--date: for the Conservancy archive the most important date is the date the photo has taken (1927, 1957, etc.). Currently I'm adding this date to the Description field, following general notes about the image, and before the jpeg file number. Is this the best (only) place to put historical date information? Can other fields (e.g., Date of Image) be added to the iPhoto file manager structure to customize it?
Again, no need to do this. You can edit the date of any photo in the Information Window (click on the ‘i’ lower left) - the date field is perfectly editable.
I think you need to look at other options. The standard database app on a Mac is FileMaker Pro. A little daunting at first, but it’s not too difficult to create a database structure that meets your specific needs. Other apps that you might look at include MS Expression, Extensis’ Portfolio. There are other options I’m sure: search on MacUpdate

Hello my friend I have  the same situation in my case I have a tutorial of sap which I have read and I recomend you that you need to read in order to under stand archiving.
in this tutorial there are some parts in which you can see some pages where it mentions some sample of writing, delete, reading archiving progrma  that there are in SAP system.
Check this link and I think it can help you.
In my case I do not understand all the code sample.

  • Faster utility for creating .zip archives

    Hi all,
I'm sometimes really surprised by the stock apple software, like Quitime or iMovie or in this case the utilitiy in the finder that creates .zip archives...    why on earth don't they aim for the best and quickest user experience and make use of all processors...  or am I misinterpreting the info given by the activity monitor ?
the procss seems to be using I'm trying to compress 10GB worth of movies from my Canon 7D (probably no big savings anyway) and neither the CPU nor the full number of cores seems to be used. I realize this is a quadcore and the other 4 cores ar "virtual" or Hyperthreading cores...  but still wouldnt it be usefull to use them all ?
    btw. runing 10.7.x on a
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,3
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2,2 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          16 GB
the files in question reside on a external HD attached via FW 800
Anyway, I dont expect there is a tweak or way to make the built in utility better (before Apple decides to do things right) but could someone recommend a utility that creates .zip ( or even.tar and other formats ) and a) allows to see the expected savings beforehand and b) makes use of all the power the computer has ? I know there is plenty of utilities in the app store but of course none of them gives this kind of info...
    thx for any hint

Thank you very much. It works.
My idea was almost the same, but without using components - I
    still didn't work with them.
    Here:
    zipFile = CreateObject("java","java.util.zip.ZipFile");
    zipEntry = CreateObject("java","java.util.zip.ZipEntry");
I was trying to create separate java objects like this and
    then call their methods.
    - but made error in syntax (utils vs. util) and decided that
    JDK must be installed...
Anyway, I'd make additional work that Artur already made and
moreover - unified everything inside one component.
    Thanks again :)

  • Create Camera Archive via Card Reader - Possible?

If I connect my DSLR (5D II) to the Mac Pro via USB it is not recognised when I click the Import Icon as a source to create a Camera Archive.
If I stick the CF card in a Firewire reader it does not appear as an option except when using Import under File menu option, and that imports directly as an Event.

    Jeaux wrote:
I can understand using FCPX to archive tape footage, but for card contents I don't see the point. Create an archive file on a drive and drag a copy of your card there...
Yes, you could do it manually (what I generally do for photos) but for consistency I'd like to make archives when I've taken video footage - I'm only a hobbyist but often carry both my Sony HC3 camcorder and 5D II DSLR - I'll have video from both and it would be quite clumsy to have an archive of the tape material but a 'manually created' folder of the DSLR stuff.
Not essential to have this, but would certainly be nice.

  • Large file created in archive area.

I'm having this situation. Their is a file being created in our archives area that starts with DATAFILES as shown below, that is very big and
can this file be deleted or purged from the archives area? If another file this size is created in the area it will surely occupy all the disk space available. How can I handle this situation and why is this file being created? The first 2 files are other files being created in the same area.

    Thanks in advance!

It looks like a backup, but we can't be sure. You'd have to identify the process / script / job that creates the file and why.
    /sbin/fuser DATAFILES_..._20100208_5el5f395_s15534_p1
might help identify a process accessing / writing to that file.

    Hi
<u>You can make the Customizing settings for basis configuration of data archiving in the IMG:
SAP Web Application Server -> System Administration -> Data Archiving</u>
To archive data from customer tables, it is not necessary to modify the document-specific archiving objects. Instead, you can use the BAdI BBP_ARCHIVING_BADI. For more information, see the system documentation for the BAdI BBP_ARCHIVING_BADI and associated methods.
